    John Ritter is well-known for playing really likeable characters. He is chillingly good as Terminator.
    He also said that playing Ted helped him better understand his own step-daughter.

    Love when you guys start laughing uncontrollably. Always look forward to the Sunday morning Buffy time. And now Tuesdays! RIP John Ritter aka Ted. He was from Threes Company from the 70's-80's, voice of Clifford the Big Red Dog, a ton of other shows and a few movies, until his last show, 8 Simple Rules. Very funny man.

    Such a clever episode with the idea that Buffy actually possibly killing a human (even one as revolting as Ted) so it's a real relief to find out that he's a robot. John Ritter does such a great job as Ted - he was so known for comedy roles that seeing him play such a nasty character was a real shock when this came out. And as others have said, you have to give Joyce a break - she's drugged,too. The one thing that always gets me is that Buffy and Willow are really blind to what's in front of them - Xander and Cordy are practically joined at the hip in this episode and the girls are oblivious. Nice reaction, guys.

    John Ritter was such a legend!!! A great actor but I also hear he was a really great guy too. This episode was the first time I’d seen a mostly known comedic actor in a villainous role & he knocked it out of the park. Also the first big star Buffy had at that point.
    Awesome reaction guys. Cannot wait for the rest of Season 2 & future seasons.

    When I first moved to LA, I lived a few blocks away from where they filmed the minigolf scenes, Sherman Oaks Castle Park. I replaced a guy who worked on the crew. He loved that shoot at the Buffy lot was anywhere from 35 minutes to an hour plus drive, depending upon traffic.
    RIP John Ritter, one of the biggest names the show ever got.

    Excellent reaction. Every comment time one of you picks up some small detail that’s going to be important to the character development and plot lines.Willow is an intelligent and curious young lady. She has no fear trying to understand. This is part of who Willow is at heart and her trying to understand is a vehicle for her character development.
    One often overlooked part of Ted is the reaction of Buffy to killing another person. We saw that Buffy can have no shame or regulator when killing a vampire or demon. Now compare Buffy when she realizes she killed Ted. At first she was glad Ted struck her. Look at how happy Buffy was and she can unleash her supernatural power, meant to slay evil creatures. Instead of subduing Ted, she hits him and believes she has killed him. Notice Buffy never tries to justify her actions. Joyce is willing to lie and cover for Buffy. This is a real test about the integrity and morality of Buffy. She refuses the easy way and tells the police and the world she struck Ted and that caused the fall. Now recall Lie To Me. She tells Ford he had options and some are tough but he had options. Buffy is confronted with choices. Buffy takes the honest and ethical road despite a much easier one is presented. Also look at the guilt and regret that is overcoming Buffy. She is not reacting with righteous justification set by society but the price for taking another persons life. A major step in the growth and journey for Buffy.
    Buffy can not tell Joyce. Imagine a conversation with your Mother… almost every night I have to be in a life or death fight with a supernatural evil creature. You might not see me again but can I have waffles for breakfast. Then top it off by I died a few months ago but I was revived by Xander and a 250 year old vampire. I died because I faced a really powerful Vampire and by dying it released him into the world so I could kill him once and for all. BTW, there’s a vampire in town that’s killed a couple of Slayers like me and he is trying to kill me.He is with another powerful Vqmpire that’s crazy and knew my vampire boyfriend in the past. Any chance Joyce will sit back and let Buffy go patrolling?

    Couple of things to comment on. First: Joyce's birth year is listed as 1958 and Giles' as 1954. So at the time of this episode she was 39 and he was 43. Second: I'm concerned that anyone was watching later seasons of Buffy at age 6...IYKYK.

I do remember my mum, who’s also a fan, giving us a talk one night before bed that if she decided it was too much she had the right to turn it off and we couldn’t make a fuss lol. Again we see the show with a mirror on social comment. The situation with Ted, where on the face of it he seems nice as pie, but is very dark and evil, but worms his way into all Buffy's friends with Buffy becoming marginalised. Many children resent a new partner being introduced into their lives when a divorced parent starts dating, and sometimes with good cause, as many exploit and abuse their position regarding a child that is not theirs. This show never shyed away from taking on such themes. Great satisfaction when Buffy finally sees to Ted. BTW always enjoyable watching younger people reacting to this and not getting the pop-culture references. The Captain and Tenille were an American husband and wife duo who were massive in the 70's and had a string of pop hits. It was a real coup for the show to get John Ritter to be in it a huge iconic actor in 70s and 80s.

    Everyone has there own personal opinions. This episode is the first real struggle in the series I have. I think it's because until the reveal of Ted being a robot, its all played as if Ted is a person, including Buffy thinking she killed someone. I understand people thinking him being a robot devaluing it. The fact that it started with a human building it makes it not devalued, for me. And even on re-watches knowing she doesn't, but seeing the struggle makes it both easier to watch, but still a struggle nonetheless. It's not a terrible episode, as the whole Buffyverse, for me works on a favorite to least favorite episode list rather than like and dislike columns, but this one is more towards my least favorite part of my list.
    I never realized how correct Mike is in dealing with trauma. It's about taking control of your own agancy, which a lot of times can mean don't let your emotions control you.
    Never considered Giles a thirties character. He was always forties to me.

    I give Joyce a bit of a break (after the fact) in not immediately believing Buffy about the threat, given that she had been drugged and then told Ted's version of events first. Often if someone is told a reasonable story first, by someone they trust, that's the version of the story they are most likely to believe.

    Even though Ted turned out to be a robot Buffy still went through the emotions of having thought she killed a human and it asks the moral question should there be different rules for the Slayer? Plus, the whole Mom not believing her daughter trope has been done a thousand times over with Lifetime movies.

    • @cajah88
      @cajah88 Місяць тому +1

    Mikey, there's only a 1 year age difference between the actors*. They were in their early 40s when this was filmed.. Sarah Michelle Geller was 20 playing 16. Give them the same benefit of the deaging of charcters from the actors real age - drop 4 years and they're both in their late 30's. A twenty year age difference would make Giles almost the same age as Buffy.
    Now if you want an age difference Jenny Calendar (Robia LaMorte) is a bit younger than Anthony Stewar Head - only 7 years older than SMG - which makes her 16 years younger than AHS and, oddly enough, the same age as Charisma Carpenter.
    * According to Wikipedia - Anthony Stewart Head 2-20-1954, Khristine Sutherland 4-17-1955, Sarah Michelle Gellar 4-14-1977,
    Robia LaMorte (Scott) 1970, Charisma Carpenter 7-23-1970

Watching Jack Trippers play Ted is scary…. I mean... they were both dealing with trauma at that point, and Joyce had been drugged/under the influence for who knows how long. Really enjoyed your reaction/discussion. The more I see this episode (and reactions to it), the more I like it. Still a mid-level Buffy episode for me. Not Joyce's finest moment but, as others have pointed out, she was drugged and, as Mike correctly points out, Buffy has been a problem child (obviously b/c of the hidden truth she is the slayer).
    I can also see where the robot twist can be viewed as lessening the impact/consequences of the episode but to me the most important thing is how Buffy reacts after believing she killed a human, which is to take responsibility and admit the truth regardless of the consequences. Sure having Ted turn out to be a robot lessens the ramifications but the this show will have consequences aplenty to come so I don't mind the cleaner resolution here.
    Lastly, enjoyed hearing your wishes. Will enjoying watching you seeing which ones come true.

  • @feudist
    @feudist Місяць тому +4

    Buffy often acts like a spoiled only child and can be very catty...but she's also the Slayer. And this won't be the last time her instincts are poo-pooed by the Scoobies and even Giles. If you hadn't noticed, everything done with malicious intent works MUCH better on the Hellmouth. Like, 1950s "robot" tech, mind control drugs and halfassed magic spells.
    It is to Buffy's credit(and Joyce's and Giles) that she has the moral stature to immediately take responsibility for(essentially) using Slayer strength to kill a human for simply pissing her off.
    Remember this temptation and dilemma.
    Xander is openly nice to Cordelia due to the cookies and pizza.
