I was on some acid in Arcata California, being the rambler I am when I heard this song and it brought me straight back to my home in Hickory North Carolina.
I did some one time just made me talk gibberish till I collapsed and seized out best high of my life so far let’s not forget the feeling of total euphoria and hallucinations of a fire storm in the middle of the ocean on a carnival
Hickory NC is 50 miles down the road from Charlotte NC , but Old Hickory is now part of Nashville Tennessee, it was separate when DuPont owned our little village ! It was a great little town to live in as a kid ! It was named after Andrew Jackson , old hickory was his nickname !
Virgil Lee was a mighty man He could outrun the L&N Caught a wild cat and made him his friend He was a flat woods boy Caught his learnin' from a runnin' brook Taught him go with the flow and don't get hooked But Virgil Lee kindly mistook The devil for a dear friend You can fool all the jokers with diamonds You can playboy ramblin' roots You can lie like a penny on the CNO line But the good Lord knows the truth Just like a old hickory Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory It was Gainsboro at the Glow Worm Bar We were passin' around a jug and a guitar Virgil picked it like an Opry star I mean the boy was on fire I said, "Hey Virgil Lee, where'd you get that stuff?" He said, "I don't know, I guess I made it up?" Well sometimes an empty cup Just overflows And all that summer was fire and rain Virgil Lee started nursin' the pain 'Til every one of them songs he would play Was twisted, falling down Like a old hickory Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory Laid him out in his overalls 'Cause when you get too big for your breeches well that's all Hung his fiddle and his flat top guitar Up in the high school gym Nobody remembers his name And I can't say anyone's to blame One of these times you gotta hear him play He was the greatest that's ever been You can fool all the jokers with diamonds You can playboy ramblin' roots You can lie like a penny on the CNO line But the good Lord knows the truth Just like a old hickory Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut Old hickory Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory Oh and that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory

Nashville. The album is a reference to to Volunteer State (Tn). Old Hickory is a direct reference to Andrew Jackson (Old Hickory) our 7th president and resident of Nashville till the day he died.
I used to hear this song and think of my 🐓 but this song is such a joy to dissect. How bitter! How bitter! So gifted, but in the end nobody remembers him. Who's to say it'd matter if they did remember him? Memories of a person are just ideas of who they were to you. I understand why the firm foundation in Christ is so important now. Without Him I'd lose the concept of meaning.
At first, I thought this was the Bob Dylan song you ain’t going nowhere. Is it a different version of that song? Was it written by the same writer? They sound so similar. I can’t get it out of my head. This song is a great song and I’m not taking anything away from that.
Trying to enjoy this song at work and UA-cam keeps interrupting it with ads to get a paid membership to UA-cam music. Good call Google. Way to ruin my jam

"Remedy" was a great album, different than their first 3 albums but still great. I agree that "Tennessee Pusher" and "Carry Me Back" were mediocre. This album has 3 great songs: Flicker & Shine, Son of the Mississippi, and Dixie Ave. The rest of the album sucks.
Holy moly!, it's me again. Just love them good boys. They co-wrote wagon wheel with Bob Dylan, it went platinum 'zall.🎉❤😂

Sounds like a good time to me haha
OCMS, The Band, and Dylan all rolled up into one great song
1000% 🤘🏼😊❤️
Thinking of you today dad when I hear this. Wish you were still here.
God bless you.
God bless you, me and dad just saw them live a memory I will cherish forever ❤
Dont douthit use the ovion.
A real life, ol' timey string band!? Well I'll be dipped and rolled. Good stuff, heart strings and down home. 😢😅❤
Starting a new railroad job on a lumber line in Louisiana heard this on my way there
can't believe this isn't in the top ten yet...
The song to play when cruising down country roads windows down heading to a camp fire.
Yessir
all day! 🚛
Damn I love this song! 👍👍
Awesome song. Reminds me of The Band.
Hey Virgil, come and see, there goes Robert E Lee
'The Night they Drove Ol Dixie Down'.
I haven't heard old crow in a minute... this brings me back to when I was obsessed! Killer track
I love this one. I sing it to my kids at night.
Do it extra special for us out here that can't...
Virgil Lee was a mighty man
He could outrun the L&N
Caught a wild cat and made him his friend
He was a flat woods boy
Caught his learnin' from a runnin' brook
Taught him go with the flow and don't get hooked
But Virgil Lee kindly mistook
The devil for a dear friend
You can fool all the jokers with diamonds
You can playboy ramblin' roots
You can lie like a penny on the CNO line
But the good Lord knows the truth
Just like a old hickory
Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down
There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory
And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory
It was Gainsboro at the Glow Worm Bar
We were passin' around a jug and a guitar
Virgil picked it like an Opry star
I mean the boy was on fire
I said, "Hey Virgil Lee, where'd you get that stuff?"
He said, "I don't know, I guess I made it up?"
Well sometimes an empty cup
Just overflows
And all that summer was fire and rain
Virgil Lee started nursin' the pain
'Til every one of them songs he would play
Was twisted, falling down
Like a old hickory
Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down
There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory
And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory
Laid him out in his overalls
'Cause when you get too big for your breeches well that's all
Hung his fiddle and his flat top guitar
Up in the high school gym
Nobody remembers his name
And I can't say anyone's to blame
One of these times you gotta hear him play
He was the greatest that's ever been
You can fool all the jokers with diamonds
You can playboy ramblin' roots
You can lie like a penny on the CNO line
But the good Lord knows the truth
Just like a old hickory
Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down
There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory
And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut
Old hickory
Shadin' the porch of a house that's been torn down
There ain't nothin' that's left but the memory
And that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory
Oh and that long, tall, scraggily, bitter nut old hickory

Makes me reminisce of The Band
It’s a mystery to me how people have never heard this band or any of their music.
They played at the kettlehouse amphitheatre in Missoula Montana a couple weeks ago.
I think that's part of the reason they're so damn good. So many times a good band gets famous then goes to crap.
no mystery to me. The nation destroyers own all the record labels and big radio stations.
@@AhmedAhmed-s6z2v muhammad was a murdering pedophile. He's burning in Hell and you will soon follow him into that fiery pit.
Finally. Heard it on a Dallas radio station and that’s the only place you could hear it. I’m going to buy this bad boy!
Nathan Henfling I know I’m guna be sittin out bush round the fire on the bank of the river listening to this song aye
Nathan Henfling we just heard them perform this song at the Opry last saturday ❤

There is if ya know where to go. 👍🏼
I heard this song for the first time today and, damn they made a song about me. My full name is Virgil Lee Browning, same as my Dad
Very good song.
Großartig
Wow that's odd luck. These just come out when I'm looking for them :)
Can't help but love this band especially since I'm from Roanoke just about the time we had a nice long t__e
Lie like a penny on the C&N line. I love that and use that term now.
Good job boys. Made my day !

Ironic I hear this song sitting under an old hickory just limited out on squirrels and was cruzin ocms songs and found it
I always think of Levon Helm when I hear this song.
The best RIP
I think Andrew Jackson
Yes sir
Striking resemblance indeed..
It's got that grass but also that mountain funk that The Band always carried.
I miss him and Warren zevon

the album itself is probably their worst (Still the best album that came out last year), but this song is incredible.

Ya I miss willie!! but still an awesome album pretty sure there is no such thing as a bad Old Crow album !!
Strongly disagree.

couple good songs on this record but everything after "big iron world" has been pretty mediocre
Since Willie Watson left they haven't been nearly as good.
@david yeah willie was the defining member.

I think remedy was good but this one is definitely mediocre
Hmm Carry Me Back is one of my favorites. To each their own I guess.
