It's got a complicated history. Critter got ahold of a bootleg album by Bob Dylan with the unreleased song now known as Wagon Wheel. Ketch then wrote down the lyrics as best as he could understand them with Bob mumbling through the song. It's a Bob Dylan song that never was.
Did you notice Gillan Welch and Davis Rawlings in it? Look at .40 secs in.and again at 1:12. And 1:37 is a good shot of Davis. Gillian and him are amazing together.
Jason. Fourth or fortieth time of listening to these lads, & just tonight, off the combine & the tractor.. I went "hold on just a minute.. that's Gillian ! So the lad in the hat must be SIR Dave?" Great tune, good vid & a proper nudge from music royalty Good man J 👍
You guys changed my life, this music motivates me! I love you guys, once saw you in Nashville. It was the best day of my life. Your music gives me peace.
I’m adult learning how to fiddle, I’m about four months in and I’ve been going at a blazing speed. I hate using a chin rest because it digs into my jaw. So I’ve been kinda using the tailpiece as a point to steady the violin with my chin. I do go to a teacher every two weeks and he is so exasperated that I do this, like it’s sacrilegious for me to not use a chin rest. I’m working on this song right now (FYI it’s quite easy for a quick learner with a good ear) and lo and behold, there’s Ketch Succor playing his fiddle in the exact same way that’s most comfortable to me. I’m forwarding this to my violin teacher.
Ok people.. cover or not, which it's not, other a few words, this song is simply beautiful. All of OCMS is pretty much gold. However, this song is almost perfect in every facet.
Well, this was the start of these guys. Take a look at them live, and it'll blow you away. It's unfortunate that this song isn't given credit where due, but what can ya do, the actual original chorus was written by Bob Dylan. In my opinion, Old Crow Medicine Show was once, and may still be, one of the top touring bands around, and I try my best to see them as often as possible.
Ketch Secor, we met at the elevator going up to the top roof bar at The Waters in Hot Springs, AR. I have always loved this song and I never imagined that it was your song when we were talking! You are so down to earth. Greets and blessings from your Salvadorean friend!
We saw them live in Michigan last year, they put on an amazing show! They sound great live, it was the best concert I've ever been too! We met Gil and Cory after the show too and they were really nice! :)
no need to bash anyone....listen to each song as if hearing it first and judge it based on it's own merits :) I like it and Darius' version. They each put their own stamp on it !
Yes! I only noticed this today and went to the comments to see if anyone else pointed that out! I did a real double take when I saw them. Can't believe I didn't notice that before
Not to long ago i found out i was going to be a dad, Now i wont ever be given the chance to be a dad. after all of it this song has a much more emotional depth but less meaning to me. Sending positive energy & love to anybody who reads this
Typically I'm an advocate for everyone having their own opinion but to be honest, I look at people one of two ways depending on which version of this song they prefer. You either prefer this one and to get it, or you prefer Ruckers version and you're... One of them. And if you're one of them, there's a lot about us you'll never understand. Don't even try. Enjoy, my friends.
Drop all the Hootie references. It's not his song. He doesn't do it better. He sounds like a lounge singer in Vegas or Branson. This song was inspired by Bob Dylan. OCMS captures that spirit with unpolished vocals and instrumentation that blends perfectly. Wagon Wheel has been played for 10 years now and gets the crowd moving no matter who performs. Nothing beats the original. Today's country music scene out of Nashville has become about as uninspiring as the mainstream pop machine.
Headin' down south to the land of the pines I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline Starin' up the road and pray to God I see headlights I made it down the coast in seventeen hours Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight So, rock me mama like a wagon wheel Rock me mama any way you feel Hey... mama rock me Rock me mama like the wind and the rain Rock me mama like a southbound train Hey... mama rock me Runnin' from the cold up in New England I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band My baby plays a guitar, I pick a banjo now Oh, north country winters keep a-gettin' me down Lost my money playin' poker, so I had to leave town But I ain't a-turnin' back to livin' that old life no more So, rock me…
So can anyone tell me why Darius Rucker stole their song and is getting more attention from it then these guys? AND NOBODY HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THIS FOR 10 YEARS WTF
Somebody asked a very similar question to Carl Perkins about Elvis and Blue Suede Shoes. Carl said every quarter when I get that royalty check, I feel fine
This is the only version in my opinion. I sure am tired of watching country hacks ruin good songs! Bob Dylan did write the chorus and OCMS wrote the rest and they share the writing credit.
Jeremy McComb's version of this is pretty stellar in my opinion. A really good one to dance to. Just gritty enough to not sound too "pop" but with some more definitive beats and more up-tempo. This is classic though :)
for everyone saying this is the original, technically thats not true, bob dylan started this song but never finished it and O.C.M.S. heard it and got the rights and finished it more or less.
I've heard everyone's version of Wagon Wheel. The very best version by far is the original by Old Crow Medicine Show. I love this song.
Bob Dylan is the original
Dylan sang the chorus from an Arthur Crudup blues tune. Ketch heard that and wrote all the lyrics. Dylan and Ketch officially split royalties 50-50.

I find it amazing how nobody comments on how well this video is shot.

Girls, just say no to Tattoos.
It’s a brilliant vibe
You guys changed my life, this music motivates me! I love you guys, once saw you in Nashville. It was the best day of my life. Your music gives me peace.
Is this considered bluegrass? I've just found this version, I only knew the Darius Rucker one and love it, and I'm so curious
No can sing it better then..Old Crow Medicine Show!!
Best version of this tune

This version always leaves me "Wanting More".
This was posted 12 years ago and it's just now making a big hit in the last couple years? People need to wake up a little.
Yep. It's pretty crazy, but that sort of thing happens from time to time.
Hi I’m Johnny Knoxville, welcome to OCMS
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST !!!
Ok people.. cover or not, which it's not, other a few words, this song is simply beautiful.

This is the best version....hands down

Just saw Old Crow Medicine Show at their hometown fair. They were awesome. They are better live than in this recording. Keep up the amazing work guys!
Love the song performance and video. God bless!
Love this song and band! Beautiful!!

Love it when these guys sing this!!! Great vocals :)
Great music.. rocks my soul.
Hands down, the BEST Bob Dylan cover EVER!

They co-wrote it Dylan, do it isn’t really a cover.

My husband started listening to them turn me on to them love their music. Can't wait to go see them play. We are checking on show now ;)

no need to bash anyone....listen to each song as if hearing it first and judge it based on it's own merits :) I like it and Darius' version. They each put their own stamp on it !
Completely agree! I heard Darius' version first and now after hearing this version they both have their own sound to it
And both nailed it!!!! With respect to the other.
My fav is where OCMS invited Mr Tucker on stage and they dueted it!!!
Nope
I'm in New England and have kin from Johnson City.
When my dad was in a band he did an amazing cover of this song. He sped it up and turned it into a folk punk sort of song. It was amazing
Is that sugar ray guy???
Gillian and David's cameo in this video make it a gas! GREAT song.
Not being familiar with OCMS I assumed you meant Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny and I was waiting for some xfiles sheet to happen 😆
Yes! I only noticed this today and went to the comments to see if anyone else pointed that out! I did a real double take when I saw them. Can't believe I didn't notice that before

Why did I only just notice that's Gillian Welch and David Rawlings watching the show!
Best version of this song ever! I do not like the remake!

Back to North Carolina for some pure Honey in the lap of luxury 🎉
Yep
Classic
That's catchy as fuck.
How true?... I think very!
Headin' down south to the land of the pines
I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road and pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight
So, rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama any way you feel
Hey... mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a southbound train
Hey... mama rock me
Runnin' from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band
My baby plays a guitar, I pick a banjo now
Oh, north country winters keep a-gettin' me down
Lost my money playin' poker, so I had to leave town
But I ain't a-turnin' back to livin' that old life no more
So, rock me…
So can anyone tell me why Darius Rucker stole their song and is getting more attention from it then these guys?
AND NOBODY HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THIS FOR 10 YEARS WTF
It's called a cover
Somebody asked a very similar question to Carl Perkins about Elvis and Blue Suede Shoes. Carl said every quarter when I get that royalty check, I feel fine

Why does the strong woman look so familiar?

I like the version Hootie does but the original is the best

I'm sorry but it seems as though Darius Rucker took away all of the bluegrass flare. Even the instrumental wasn't right in his version.

Bob dylan made this song, Darius Rucker perfected it.
for everyone saying this is the original, technically thats not true, bob dylan started this song but never finished it and O.C.M.S. heard it and got the rights and finished it more or less.
If anyone thinks darris Rucker is better then u ain’t real country
Old Crow seems to disagree. They performed this song WITH Darius and that one was amazing.
Darius isn't better or worse... Just his own style.
Thank you Johnny Knoxville and the All-Peckerwood Chorus. Welcome to Jackass: The Concert

And Darius Rucker truly has nothing on them.
Darius Rucker really does this song proper justice
