- Hey folks! We get a lot of questions on what types of palms do well here in North/Central Texas, and more so, how do you take care of palm trees in the winter?
Manager Sam is here to give us a breakdown of the 5 varieties that do well here in zone 8b.
Florida Sable Palm,
Mediterranean Fan Palm,
Pindo Palm,
Windmill Palm,
& Sago Palm
You answered my question before I could finish writing it. Instant subscriber. I'm hoping it's not going to get as cold as they are saying because it's going to suck losing my palms.
What part of the state are you in?
@@Salmiyaguy1 Dallas County near Rockwall County line
Interesting. If I ever move out of Canada, I'm thinking of going to Texas or Florida. Love palm trees.
Great video, thank you
Amazing work guys!! I would like to do in our backyard.
Nice work! The repetition looks good.
Thanks!

Phoenix canariensis all made it through the freeze here in Central TX as well. Another great option if you have huge amounts of yard space
I like that black rock what is it? Also the river rock is a really nice touch 👌
We call it Blackstar Gravel. Very similar to basalt gravel or Tejas gravel as well. All look very similar. Thank you!
@@mowproslandscapedesigntree8980 yes I thought it was black tsar. It just looked nicer for some reason more dark. I thought it was something different. Thanks
I'm shocked the Mexican Palmetto does not do well in central TX! There is some growing in Dallas. Man you did a beautiful landscape with the Palmettos.
I always assume you can grow most palms in Texas. when I lived in Houston I got a suntan on Christmas day.
do either florida sabal or texas sabal need to be hurricane cut if planting one that was fieldcut? iv heard both yes and no. Ive just planted a sabal and the fronds were left tied up.
Дякую за видиос ... 😊
what type of rocks do you put at the base of those florida sabals?
That is Colorado river rock. We love it, it's nice and smooth.
@@mowproslandscapedesigntree8980 thanks we have a small sabal (3ft trunk) and looking to plant a larger one and liked the rock. so far so good here in 7a okc with ours, 2nd winter
I need one
what palm trees are good for south east texas
should you spray warm water on cycads in order to help them come back to life?
Cycads, Sago palms do prefer humidity. For them to thrive where we are, they need to be protected for the first few winters. Once they're a few year in the ground, they typically handle winters just fine and don't need extra help. I have read that they respond well to being sprayed with warm water, since they thrive in humidity. We can have very humid summers, so they love that.
How tall will a Texas sable get
What do those Florida sables run...
Depends on the starting height. Typically an 8ft. Sable will run around $1,200 Installed and they go up from there. Double Sables can get pricey, some of those go for $2,000+
@@mowproslandscapedesigntree8980 $1200 installed for a Sabal palm? Wow! I get them for $300 installed in the panhandle!
are windmill palms over planted?
Really it just depends on where you are. We love using these palms around pools because they're tropical, yet low-maintenance and drought tolerant. And cheaper than the Sable palms. Some people don't like seeing palms father north, and think they look out of place. But they do really well where we are in North/Central Texas. So we will keep using them 🌴
Must be referring to North Florida, because Central Florida & South Florida are definitely not 10 degrees colder than Central Texas.
Correct, there are several palm nurseries in Northern Florida that ship to Texas. Central Texas and Northern Florida sit right along the same longitude.
Wait I thought the sabal palms are a trunkless type of palm they never created a trunk? I do know that to protecting your palm for winter is the you got to wrap the the proud of your palm the growing center part on the top of your palm where all you new fans come from. That's the part you must cover because it's that part freezes girl growing point is dead.
Seen alot of Dead palm trees after that freeze.
Yes definitely! A lot of dead everything - Indian Hawthorne, Pittosporum and I’m sure lots of perennials won’t be coming back this year. That was a record breaking few days of extreme weather. We are still confident a lot of the Florida Sabal Palms will pull through! We’ve been checking them and a lot of them are still alive. We will see if they recoup.
I thought sago was a cycad.
Sable palm tree
They are popping up everywhere around here, starting to get boring seeing them everywhere. Especially north on 77
Yeah! They might have over done it out there 😅
I plant pindo palms in Toronto.
Let people know Sago palms seeds are very toxic. Especially if you have dogs, that might eat a seed.
Dogs are unlikely to eat the seeds.
First
This video didn't age well.
It’s too early to tell! It seems like a lot of the Florida Sabal Palms that we have been checking are going to pull through. Of course a lot of palms died. But so did Indian Hawthorne, Pittosporum and other shrubs that we considered cold hardy in Central Texas. We had some record-breaking extreme temperatures that was cold for even lower zones.
@@mowproslandscapedesigntree8980 also my pindo palm survived!
