I k ow this cideo is two years old, but can you please tell us you reguler signal chain for high enough, that tone is litterally perfect, iv been chasing it for years.
I’ve always maintained that the TSA team at every American airport should include at least one musician. A person who knows what this stuff is and can come in and confirm “oh, no that’s not a bomb. It’s a clean boost.”
This comment is great
"oh is that a tube pedal? security he's got a bomb"
You're so right
I remember this gig, I’m the one asking if you need power. I was backline wrangler for the weekend. You dealt with that pedal fail pretty well by the way and it was a great show. Chapeau sir.
Awesome 😎
Wasn't a gear fail, man... The Universe just wanted you to experience a real les paul through a cranked AC30 lol
Underrated comment
Blessing from God. No one does that anymore but I bet that was an awesome experience
Same lesson, now carry a Boss '65 Deluxe and a pack of 9volts every show in a suit pocket. But hearing a cranked AC30 is a wonderful thing indeed. Always have no trust in TSA. Glad your backline rig treated you well. Also the "staring at the rig" technique has rarely worked for me either--other then seeing how one of the 1/4 jacks looks different than the others--not plugged in all the way.
yep a power house combo
Hell yeah! I've done my last gig with my LP thru a '70s Vox Ac30TB and a couple of pedals. It was an outdoor gig and it was literally the best live sound I've ever had
I’ve been playing live for 25 years and you name it, I’ve had it fail. Pedal board, amp caught fire, stage collapse mid set, headstock snapped (spare guitar fell off the stand during set), strap snapped (the stitching just went on the leather tab) Cable melted (it got hooked round a light bulb). Anyways, hoped you enjoyed London and our capitol was welcoming to you guys!
- No more petrol in the generator
- Singer got into a fight with bassplayer and destroyed his bass input jack
Etc
@@saddestchord7622 Ace Frehley would probably just call that Tuesday. LOL!
Seem like something happens every gig- I've got crazy stories too. I love it when something wacky happens and the band never misses a beat- it can be an opportunity to show how unflappable you are.
Once had keyboardist's two-deck stand topple over smashing the keys off both decks mid set. Great to laugh now that it's in the past.
I'm a drummer, and I feel your pain. A lot of war stories. Lol. The worst thing that happened to me was the old leather strap on a bass pedal breaking mid song. Huge church event, hours from home. Thank God there was other drummers in the congregation. 1200 people, probably the biggest church gig in every played.
This is the proof that you actually don't need a pedalboard onstage to sound great and do a great show!
Just a good guitar and a volume knob
@@RhettShull and you had a REALLY good guitar out there!
@@RhettShull That last song you played, with your guitar and tone, reminded me of a song called "Wooden Ships" by Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, I believe. It's all in your fingers, sir... that amp, your guitar and putting your blood, sweat and tears into it, made the show. Grace under Pressure!
Eliseo Caporale Who on fucking earth needed proof of that?
Don’t tell the boys at TPS.. ;)
Really exciting to see Rhett and Link diversify and play music instead of eating weird food. Good mythical job guys!
"Maybe if I stare at it, It'll start Working" :-D
I do the same.
It doesn't work.
I do the same when my car breaks down: lift the bonnet and stare...🤔
In some cases, I'm more like 'maybe if I throw it down the stairs, it'll work'...
@@meadishblow on it like an old cartridge
Thats Hilarious. It's so true. We have All Done That !!! (just stare)
😂
I was at this show and you guys sounded great. Even though I saw you were having some problems with your board during the sound check, honestly, once the show started you couldn't tell that anything was up. just sounded like some classic old school rock sounds. Sounded killer. Also, this is a really cool video. You shoot some really interesting content and the footage looks great. Keep it up Rhett and come back to London soon!
Thanks for coming out Dave! Great meeting you.
A cranked AC30 is a great plan B.
Also a great Plan A. LOL!
take one to a pub, tell me how it goes haha
Seriously that should be on a tattoo
@@EpicStuffMan1000 Master volume on these is just a volume. You can get it under 70db and still tear a hole in space time. 👍
I had the same problem last friday. We played our first big show (2000 people). I nearly shat myself and decided to plug straight into the amp. Still rocked the show and had a great time. Rock on brother🤘
I wont lie... as you have my gear on your board, it was a nail biter for me... Gear failure is inevitable, but I never want it to be one of mine. I was happy to see how victoriously you overcame the challenge and put on a great show in spite of the gear failure. Nicely done Rhett!! Those guitars and that amp sounded amazing!
I love your pedals, @LawrencePetrossDesign !
No plan B at the end of the video was ironic for once lol
Straight into the amp...with brass cojones. Rhett played the show - there is no plan B. Lol
Yeah this was a rad example. Rock n Roll baby.
Not ironic, appropriate.
I was literally going to post this then saw your pinned post 🤣 as plan B’s go, this was more awesome than most plan A’s - you guys sounded great.
@@conan218 A player as good as he is can pull it off! I would have been crying and calling for my mommy! lolz
Straight into the amp....OLD SCHOOL!
Bob Marshall most people can't play good enough to.plug straight in,all need color for there sound...effects cover mistakes n poor playing skills..why billions of distortion pedal on the market cause people buy em...Nashville players clean precise n soul..= good guitarists...
@@scottconnors8419 I disagree whole heartedly. In order for pedals to be used in the right way, the player has to be good and has to have a good ear to know when and where to use those pedals. Pedals provide a whole different area of inspiration and to that, they cover mistakes because that's not how all the OG's did it is a primitive and simple-minded argument. Hendrix used pedals. Angus Young used a wireless boost. Led Zeppelin 1 is a fuzz box into an amp. And I can guarantee you some of them Nashville guys use a compressor of some sort to get a tighter clean tone. Tim Pierce probably uses a crap ton of effects and he is a legendary session guy. I agree a good guitar player doesn't need pedals, but a good guitar player uses pedals to enhance what's already there. Not to cover up mistakes.
gibbanz22 my point is more points that are connected MORE room for failure w signal..that's all....I saw most all the si called big rock bands in early 70,s in up n I dont remember tons of effects did see Jimmy page lose signal before n break a strap but he was a pro...didn't bat an eye. it's how some gear smashing git started, signal fail in middle of a gig or Jan. fkn smassshhhh...who. ?
Scott Connors if you are referring to The Who, Pete first smashed a guitar on accident into a low ceiling on top of the stage. Crowd went nuts. He went with it. The rest is history. Also if you plug into any amp cranked, that dirt hides many things. Same as a of or distortion pedal. I’m having a hard time thinking of any players that actually just plug into a cranked amp. Then and now live. Even early page had a custom hiwatt that had a boost switch on it that he could step on. Essentially a boost circuit added into his amp.
Keith Richards the same.
Gibson: "Hey, we're gonna give you guys a guitar to use for your show. Straight off our showroom floor!"
Rhett: "Hmm, should I choose the super authentic Les Paul, or the super authentic SG?..."
Gibson: "Ugh we're never gonna live this down..."
Goes to show. Can’t beat a killer guitar + cranked amp + experienced fingers.
Rhett's guitar: Falls onto bed
Gibson LP: Gently placed onto bed.
A small request man. Could you please...... post videos EVERY SINGLE DAY!... no pressure. Also I seriously need to try a Novo !
Only if you edit them for me lol
You guys need to do a collab!
This is what I wanna do when I’m older, Rhett ,and all of good trouble, you’re all absolute legends in my eyes and inspire me so much, thank you for bringing music to earth
A friend of mine is very effect board reliant (emotionally). One night his board failed and he had to go direct to amp.
It just brought more meat and definition to band's sound. The best they ever sounded.
It's true in many industries that you find out who the professionals are when things go wrong, and you sir, dealt with that like a pro.
Gear failures suck! But that is when your talent is put to the test as a guitar player. You sounded great given the circumstances rhett! Way to not let it get to your head.
Technically I don't even know if this classifies as a "gear failure" since it's really just more of a fault of the complete retards at the TSA for messing with things that they don't have any business messing with and all in the name of "safety". I mean I could understand wanting to dismantle the board if it had like a Metal Zone or a DOD pedal on there but not a bunch of boutique pedals. LOL!
I had a gear failure at my show at the Cleveland house of blues a few years back, it was my biggest show up until that point and my amplifier would not turn on for 10 minutes lol
@@DannyShipleyMusic Our biggest gear failure was the venue burning to the ground after a show. We had to use borrowed equipment for several gigs. A nightmare!
@@tomjones239 CrAZyyyy
Not a gear failure. A TSA sux problem
Thanks for making these, man. I've got bad social anxiety, that and money always held me back from looking for gigs, this helps with the anxiety a lot

Awesome Rhett! Thanks for this look inside.
Your Guitarsound straight into the AC 30 was pefect and great. Forget your board.

I had that exact same "holy shit" moment with a Les Paul this last Friday. It's a 1976 Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers, and, best of all, it's mine now :)
qfz2112 I know what you mean. I have a 72 Goldtop Deluxe, that I’ve had since 75, mostly original and some of the best sounding pups. The minis just sing.
I've had the exact same "holy shit" moment too....however it was not with a Les Paul (although I do love em!); it was with a PRS.
I had a different but similar experience. Online on reverb I found a left handed Greco EG-900 that was refinished and had some parts upgraded. Fell in love with it and was saving up but was purchased. A few weeks go by and I snatch it for myself. Needless to say when I picked it up, it felt like it molded into my hands perfectly.
Rhett! You played 10 minutes away from my house, I almost fell out of my chair when. I saw where your gig was! Love your work man! Great onstage recovery!! Please come back again! Bring Beato!
Watching backstage journals in 2020 to remember what gigs were like.
Amazing thing about pedal boards, effects, etc. Truth is, if the guitar/amp/tone is dialed in, 99% of the audience literally doesn't know the difference between straight in vs using the pedal board. Sounded great.
This video saved me during a gig I had in December of 2019. Had a pedal die in the middle of the set, and I wasn't sure which one, so it wasn't an easy fix. Just remembered this vid, went straight into the amp, and things were good to go. Woulda definitely panicked if I hadn't seen this video before
I love how London made you play straight into its most legendary amp, like it was meant to be! London wanted hear it and it sounded amazing!
That wasn't a Gear FAIL!! That was a discovering you sounded AWESOME plugged direct to amp old school!! Pedalboard Shmedalboard! ha ha sounded great!!
I can't believe you were playing outside my office and I didn't even know.
They have offices in the sewers?
The "stare at my gear to make it work" look hahaha. The feeling is all to real.
..yes, the crowd (of which I was one) enjoyed it!
where was it?
@@fercuevas5772 looks like the Canary Wharf stage in London
Having a PBR & living vicariously. Thank you, Rhett for sharing these travel postings!! When there is no plan "B", you "adapt & overcome"...
A true master of their craft is able to roll through obstacles with grace and poise know matter what the vocation may be. Rhett you demonstrated you are one of the masters and you channeled your frustration into some soulful soloing too. Thank you for sharing.
The solo you start playing at 17:10 is incredible. Who needs pedals when you and the band can play like this!
I appreciate these videos so much... It really starts to give me a clue about what the life of a career musician is really like. Man, I love playing music, but I could not take this level of constant stress. More power to you!
This is why Rhett is such a good and professional player. He adapted and overcame the problem by using the most useful and expressive things the electric guitar has, the volume and tone nobs. No pedals needed.
You're sure. But let us not to forget that he could manage the whole situation because he had a Vox AC 30 available for the show. Surely any other good tube amp would be enough as far as the final tone result is concerned. But if the available amp was some sort of SS amp I'm pretty sure that he could have found himself in some pretty scary situation.
@@Strongpersuader What a stoopid statement
@@jameskellam2980 I guess you're sure. SS amps are known for giving pretty nice overdriven tones, aren't they?
@@Strongpersuader ???? As a matter of fact there are some SS amps that sound phenominal.
There are Tube amps that sound like crap. Trying to say he couldn't have pulled off a gig in a pleasing way is utter bull sh!t
Seriously Rhett, the production of these gig adventures is top notch, I feel like I'm in London alongside you guys!
The more videos I see of fly gigs the more my anxiety grows towards doing it myself. I'm seeing so many gear fails because TSA just rips stuff apart...😡
Buy a boss ms 3 and pair it with a few small pedals and that could easily fit in with your carry on bag.
If I had to do fly gigs for a living, I'd be getting one of the Milkman or Quilter pedal amps and a Tech21 Flyrig and just carry everything on board with me.
@@droliver Lots of choices now.
@@duanewilson3941 for sure. But those Tech21 things and quilters are bulletproof.
@@droliver Agree
Sounds so good, Rhett. That's rock and roll, brother. Never meant to be perfect...
Man, I know you're not the guy that does lessons and what not, but Rhett, I would LOVE a tutorial on how you play Hell or High Water. I can kinda see the basic chord structure in your vids, but I love your little jangly fills and licks. If you get bored one day and want to do a quick lesson I know a lot of us out here would love it.
Man, your tone is on point minus the tap dancing.
You are my current youtube muse. You are so ripping talented. It's taken me ten years of suffering through listening to myself suck to finally impress myself from time to time. And Noah has the pipes. Good stuff. Thank you.
Nice work! There is a saying that goes "most of the tone is in the hands" or something like that. You proved that at this show. Good on ya.
No joke, that solo in High Enough made me cry, full rig or straight to amp, you deliver the right emotion. I'm going through some stuff and was holding back a lot of bottled up emotion. You talked to those emotions with that solo. So, I'm sure it's a disappointment when gear fails onstage (has happened to me too) but that AC30 and the Novo was all you needed to connect with people and I can confirm that.
Mannnn... it happened to me last night in front 5000 people... the song starts in the middle of the show, no bass. Fortunately, the keys were playing low notes so I was covered for a 16 bars. Did what you did : unplugged the pedalboard and straight into the amp. I am working on my board as I write this.
Stellar performance. I love how you just sorted it out no stress, pro doings right there. I'd have loved to have seen this. Good thing you know what you're doing!
Dude that performance of “High Enough” was intense & insane... “wasn’t our best show,” my ass!
You just proved that if you're a professional, all you need is a good guitar and a good amp. Also, Fire is my favorite Springsteen song. I love what you guys did with it, you nailed it!
Dare I say it? :P I think you sounded better than usual, dude. Guitars straight into the AC30 gave the whole sound more guts than usual, and I could really 'hear your fingers!' Love it! Rock on!
Rhett, it's so amazing to hear a great guitar sound without a ton of gears. I'm a church player and sometimes I feel that it's impossibile to do a good job without reverb and delay. That's such a big lesson to me, thank you man!
YEAH!! YOU WAITED FOR YOUR FIRST INTL SHOW...AND WAS IN LONDON, AND YOUR PEDAL BOARD IS NOT WORKING.... AND YOU JUST WENT INTO THE AMP AND PLAYED LIKE A BADASS...... AND WITH A GUITAR YOU NEVER PLAYED BEFORE... THAT IS THE ROAD, THE JOURNEY...AMAZING I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU! THANK YOU RHETT, YOU ROCK!!
I gained a new level of love and appreciation for my Vox AC30 after I watched this video.
So great to see you still being creative and expressive with your playing/soloing without the sounds you’re used to having. Great job!! I bet it’s hard in that situation (different country/big crowd) to not let it break your flow!
Side note; 18:24 gave me chills. Props to Noah for that!!
17:00 man, the lead into the lead in "High ENough" is really tension-building-sweetness; full, deep, and, smooth. Gilmour could not have composed and/or executed it any better; really nice.
I loved the moment you knew it was time to move on and just crank the AC30 and enjoy the show. Great positive mindset! 💪🤘. Always enjoy these road diaries. Thanks man.
Guitarists are weird.
"This guitar has a nice sunburst so I'll cover it in white paint, and as the white paint comes off with wear, it will show how nice the sunburst is".
I don’t see the problem.

The slowest gender reveal
20 years later: awww, it's a ...sunset?
Gear fail happened to me once. Same type of festival with thousands of people there, my amp died after 3 songs on a 12 song set list. I had a Digitech rp 255 pedal, unplugged the mic from my cabinet, plugged the mic cable directly into the pedal, turned on the amp and cabinet simulators and finished the gig. That pedal saved me that day, and it didn't sound half bad through their massive p.a. 😊 Times like those make me appreciate multi effects pedals more because it's only 1 power supply and 2 cables, less crap to go wrong!
DigiTech RP360 XP thru clean 50W Marshall and Fender combos. I keep a Chorus and Volume pedal handy if I lose the 360. 👍
aww mate you looked really bummed after the show, I say you did a great job and should feel stoked, it's all rock n roll baybeh!
Rhett, you have a wonderful site chock full of useable information, very interesting, and almost addicting. I have to thank you for reinstalling my love for the creative process. I now think I might be able to start writing again in my home studio, and with my band at our Tarrifville studio. I've wasted so many years of misdirection, lost in a fog of deception, and you have. helped me put things in perspective. Its been a long struggleThanks again.
Definitely want to check your pedal board in your hotel room as soon as you arrive next time. What happened to the Helix-only rig?
Was thinking the same thing about Helix... seems like this situations like this is why he used Helix before. Curious what happened.
@@andrewhyde3161 When the Helix fails...it is a complete Game over
I gotta say, I ordered an Epiphone Les Paul, in Green burst which is a guitar I’ve been lusting over for quite some time. Didn’t get to try any out as the store had none in stock, well... I got it home, unboxed it, tuned up to pitch and hit that first chord and it was like the planets aligned or something. There was this resonance that went right through the guitar, into me and then the goosebumps started. Easily the best guitar I’ve ever played and it’s bringing so much joy, I lost most of my eyesight last year and now I’m writing music again and looking at getting a band going again to share the love of music. I’m really loving the videos Rhett, you guys are true professionals and you handle everything thrown at you in stride and don’t let it get you down. All the best in your continued success!😎😎
Who needs pedals! That tone was absolutely killer!!! I’m now listing all my pedals on eBay and buying an AC30!
As I've said a thousand times before, sometimes you think you need things you don't. The clips sound fantastic. No reverb/delay required.
Awesome recovery and that I'm on Fire cover is absolutely excellent!
Your tone and playing has great.
That's where, if possible, having a hx stomp (helix, ax8..whatever) comes in handy. Great tone straight into that ac30 man.. Thanks for sharing these videos!

@20:35 😂
Great video man! Sounded epic just turned up. I can tell you really digged the sound on “I’m on Fire”. Just using the middle position and feeling it with the vol/tone controls.
Killer !
One of the things I always find humorous, is how the person will list everything from what string winder they use and what guitar pick but they don't list the moist important part. What kind of guitar they are playing.
Or who's on drums and bass ;)

Gear failures do happen, it’s just a fact of gigging. How you handle the failure at that critical moment, is the lesson here. Great job pressing on.
Wonderful video, loved it!
Virtually all the original iconic guitar tones were a great guitar plugged straight into the front of a loud, cooking valve amplifier. Good job you were supplied with a great amplifier and brought your own great guitars. And lucky that you were on a stage big enough to crank it. I thought you and the whole band sounded KILLER. Noah's voice is next level!!!! Fantastic stuff :-)
At this point "play authentic" has become "played out"... Great video Rhett, :)
Massive respect for going straight in and how well you did it. Its a different sound, different feel/vibe.
“Hell or High Water” is such a great tune. I’m ready for the track to be released. And your playing is always tasty....pedalboard or not.
I had my guitar go silent on the first chord, only a 500 theatre but it was packed, and lots of friends there. I was the singer too. Sounded fine at the soundcheck, but first chord for real, nothing. Swapped to an acoustic straight into an amp. Not my greatest memory!
This guy is so good that I'm sure everyone listening just thought 'what an amazing guitarist' and had no clue he'd had a breakdown.
The solo on High Enough is INSANEEE
You guys nailed the Springsteen cover. I liked "High Enough", great solo with some character. Love the way you built the solo very Clapton with the build up and crescendo. Hope one day you guys come to Chicago and do a gig. Thanks for all the posts and content you contribute.
Ya really don't need all those pedals anyway dude, sounded great.
Respect to you. A brave video. You didn't have to show a less than perfect show. But glad you got through it okay.
lesson to learn: always have an OD with a 9v ready to go. Small, light and save your butt!
Awesome recovery Rhett! I just watched your pedalboard meltdown video a week or two ago so good timing on my end, not so much for you but you made it work. Thanks for all the videos.
Great video, I love theses kinds of insight vids!
I dig watching your videos man. I too, am a touring musician 6 months out of the year. It's refreshing to see videos like this since there are such a small amount of people who actually do this for a living.
It's cool that Gibson didn't run that guitar over with heavy machinery.
What's REALLY cool is how he got to play an "authentic" 1960 Les Paul..... MADE IN 2014! LOL!!!
They probably will after he gives the guitar back 😰😱🤪📉
you are an idiot
Whats cooler is that they didn't say "Oh well, it's good enough. Lets shut up and sell it full price" like your particular favorite brand does.
@@marineman2298 I don't have a favorite brand. Which keys further into the problem. There are plenty of guitar builders that I'd rather give my money to. Giving money to a corporation that destroys guitars and puts them in a landfill when many other options exist? There's no logic in that. If it fails QA, it can still be donated to the poor all over the world. Defending Gibson is gross.
Great set! That LP took straight into that AC30 like a demon! Great tone. Excellent fretmanship!
Can't wait, putting off lunch for an hour just for Rhett. I wanna see what happened! If my choice of gear can't fit on a Nano+, it isn't going to be there.
If one or two people stare at it, it might fix it - Hilarious!!! Great work Rhett. Always enjoy your vids.
Prolly the most fun and best tone you've had in a long time if we really knew the whole story.
Well done. Going back to basics exposes what's real. You did a fantastic job playing and should be proud.
Play straight in all the time and treat pedals as a luxury and you'll always be ready for anything anywhere 🤘🤘🤘
We were at the gig and snuck to the front just as Rhett was giving the board his hardest possible stare. You can even see us on the video (fame at last - I'm on a Rhett Shull video!). It was clear that there was a problem but I have to say that the Novo through the AC30 sounded incredible. I learned the hard way to always check the gear after landing in a new city. Discovering that despite having the appropriate plug adapter my pedal board did NOT work on 110v came as a shock but luckily we found out in time and got a converter to push 240v into my rig for the gig itself. You made an impressive recovery and put on a hell of a show.
Even direct to Vox AC30 guitar sounds great!
We've all been there. Big or small gig, we've all had something go wrong that makes us just adapt on our toes. It's how we handle it that separates the amateurs from the pros!
From Helix to a cranked AC30. This is evolution man! :-)
This reminded me exactly what I did at my old college beat contest..every other band came out with their expensive gears but I (as I didn't have any pedals/effects) just connected directly to the marshall amp and yes we actually freaking won the competition!
Cant get more old school than that! One of the best experiences of my life
