- No paint on your guitar = better tone? Bullsh*t, Nuno! We look at this & other really stupid things this week! Grab Element Bass, Singularity, or Extinction Level Event at spectredigital.com/?sld=spect...
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
EVIDENCE??? OK...
Placebo is a hell of a drug
Using paint stripper in a non-ventilated room without using a respirator WILL change how you
I painted my guitar with magnetic paint and now it just floats in the corner I don't even need a guitar stand
every time I see those thousand dollar Gibson pickups I fall over laughing.
So if I paint my guitar in a Highland tartan it won’t sound like bagpipes??? Damn!
Tonewood resonates with my own wood and produces sexy toan that mesmerizes the masses.
Glen threw in the towel real quick with the censoring hahaha
GGGLLLEEENNN can you please put the Distressor back in the camera shot. I love it’s glowing red meter that displays your rage visually.
I have only been watching this channel for a few months and it has changed my ENTIRE way of thinking about guitars and equipment. Something I used when I went to buy my nephew a new guitar last week. Thank you Glen !
When I bought my last set of pickups, all I cared about was the output and the quality of the potting. They were 30 dollar pickups that replaced some old Seymour Duncan pickups with a bad squealing problem. Guess what my guitar sounds like? The same, minus the squeal! Here's another thing. I record with so many different guitars. Unless it's my strat or gretsch on the tracks, I can't remember which guitar I used on which song.
I watched a demo video last night of a 3d printed (that's plastic for those who don't know) guitar that sounded great. The player had solid chops and technique and all I could think of was the comment Nuno made about the paint. I laughed. I then woke up and saw this video. The tone wood and pickup thing really is the cork sniffing of the guitar world. Another great video Glenn.
To follow up on the old-school metal sound, how about a discussion on old-school metal drums like early W.A.S.P., Queensryche, Ozzy, and Crue?
didn't expect my ugly mug at the beginning... I have a slew of guitars but I mostly track with an 80s peavey T-60 and a 90s Ibanez s470dx because they are reliable, stay in tune, and get the sound I need. The first one is a big heavy block of ash with a maple neck/fretboard, and the other is a thin slice of mahogany with a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, and the wood never factored into it.
Once again, great episode. I watch everything you put out and try to absorb and learn as much as I can.
For another twist to the speaker thing, a test on 10 inch speakers would be great, anything that could upgrade compact budget combos would be interesting.
It's amazing how these tone experts' "special ears" can hear the differences between mahogany and basswood or polyurethane and nitrocellulose ... but can't seem to hear the words "...at high gain..." and "...when recorded and played back..." that come out of Glen's mouth (often at very high volume).
hey glenn, do you remember when warren demartini said the snake skin ruined that charvels tone? said it made it darker.🤣
Thanks again, I can always come away with something helpful every time I watch your vids even when it’s the 2nd or 3rd time through. 🤘🏼
Glad you recovered well from the cold!
