I served 21 years in the Corps as an Infantry Officer with 3 years in combat. Officer Candidate School was brutal, but I remember my father who was a B-17 pilot in WW II and shot down/2 years as a POW, and flew B-47's and B-52's during the Cold War had a few tears at my graduation. My mother was crying. Both with pride. My first assignment was as a platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. It was a pretty wild ride for 21 years. The greatest honor in my life was to lead Marines. I was amazing what the could endure and their focus on accomplishing the mission. My eyes still get watered when I see these kinds of videos. I'm 73 now, but I'd do it all again if I could. Semper Fi to all past, present, and future Marines.

I don't really remember what the proudest moment for me in boot camp was... Was it getting my name tapes on my uniform? Was it the day I defeated The Reaper and earned my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor? Was it the day that I was finally able to tell my family in great lengths what I had just experienced the previous 12 weeks and some change? Or was it the day that Senior dismissed us from the Depot, realizing what I had just gone through made me a better person? I really couldn't tell you. Here I am two years into the Marine Corps, missing boot camp. Some Marines talk about, what if the night before you leave the fleet for good you go to sleep, only to wake to that dreaded, "LIGHTS! LIGHTS! LIGHTS!" with screaming and chaos unraveling? I can honestly say, I wouldn't mind it... Just to feel that pride and accomplishment one last time... I remember the day I really had to reach down and find my motivation again. We had just gotten back from Pendelton, we were somewhat defeated and down on ourselves for whatever reason. Our J hat took us to the footprints and told us to stand around about where we had stood when we first got to the depot. I remember his speech to this day, "Why are you guys so defeated? What happened to the Plt 1047 that used to motivate the shit out of me? You all came here for a reason, reasons much bigger than yourselves. I want you to reach down inside of yourself, remember what brought you here. Use that as your motivation. Make it your fire. Make it YOUR desire to push against all odds and whatever we throw at you... If you feel that slipping away from you, I want you to grab that shit and put it in your left breast pocket and NEVER let that go. I have faith in you all, I wouldn't of brought you here and talked to you like grown ass men if I didn't." With that being said, Marines, when you are doubting yourself, when you feel like the whole Marine Corps is against you, or you feel like this was all for nothing... Remind yourself why you joined, remind yourself that you're doing what your friends and family could never of dreamt of doing. Remind yourself that you've had proud moments and that there are more to come. You may not be Charlie Company like I was, but you are the franchise. YOU are the future of the Marine Corps. Brad Scott wow thank you for this! I am not yet a poolie I’m considered an “applicant “ since I cannot yet enlist because I have about 45 pounds to lose. At times I feel like I just workout and feel like results aren’t coming fast enough. I’ve never been athletic I hated working out my entire life, I was in an abusive marriage where I was told I wouldn’t do anything with my life. I am in the process of a divorce and still get told I’m fat by my “ex husband “ he never believed me in and made fun of me for not being good at working out or doing anything at “his level” I want to join the marines out of all branches because it will be the most challenging and I want to prove to MYSELF that I CAN be part of the few, the proud, and the brave. I want to prove that no matter what paths in life you’ve taken that you are never too late to change your life. In Gods name I WILL become a marine and will be proud to be the first person in my entire family to ever be in the military. ❤️
@@Mamacanda Don't worry about someone says, family or non family. You say your ex and I hope it stays that way cause no real man would talk to there other spouse in that matter. Instead he should be supporting you.. What it prolly is that he has never worked so hard to earn a title like a Marine and you want to.. It prolly just makes him think that your going somewhere with your life and hes not.. My son left three days ago for MCSD. He's real tall and slender, has abs you wouldn't believe but he was worried about his running. Like any father would I told him that they would mold him the way they wanted and his stamina would come just dont let the word quit in your head, also told him when things get tuff and they will just go down into that low gear and get thru. I told him the stupidest word in the dictionary was impossible. Cause of one thing anything is possible if you have goals set with your dreams thats so great. Dreams without goals are just dreams. I have alot of respect for you to put out about your home life and how its made you to want that title. Just remember anything and everything is possible. Boot Camp is made to break you and no I did not get hit at all, we had a tough training environment but no it was not physically abusive. Sixty (!) years ago on October 8, 1959 I graduated from MCRD San Diego. (Platoon 249 - only used 3 digits in those days) Served 10 years, 2 tours in Vietnam. Video brought back memories....
I still remember the first night coming back from the crucible back at the squad bay. Heard some guys cryin. Ngl I felt it man. Shit felt good and hella worth it. Being an immigrant and, prior drug addict/ drug dealer and just being homeless. I felt like I made my family proud. Love you momma. I wish you can see how proud I am of my life rn

MR.X That’s the unfortunate reality in many military relationships when one or more of the individuals involved aren’t cut out to handle it :( Luckily, I’m a tough girl and he’s a tough guy so that won’t be the case for us 😊

Get ready. Do pull ups, run a lot, belly crunches. Im old Marine who went to boot camp at Parris Island 1973, Plt 395, India Co, 3rd Bn. Only difference between San Diego and Parris Island is the weather in the summer. No humidity in San Diego....Parris Island HIGH HUMIDITY and temperature in the 90s°. Only place with higher humidity was Okinawa. 90 degrees 95% humidity. Good luck. By the way, NEVER look your Drill Instructor into his eyes. Look at his forehead. Again NEVER look Drill Instructor in his eyes. Unless the Drill Instructor tells you to look him in his eyes. I doubt that will happen. Take care

Probably will be a movie made of those battles in Fallujah. I graduated boot camp in 2002 August and then went to combat training and then 29 palms for comm school. In the fleet I got stuck having to drive around high ups because I had a humvee license, and was good on the radio. So annoying everyone got to go do cool shit, and I had to hang out with the old birds. Anyway we can only do what the Green Weanie allows us too lol 😂 glad you’re home brother. ❤️

Backlash Studios I respect your opinion for what it is, you have to understand that being Marine, or being in any branch for that matter carries a burden on peoples life’s much greater than you could imagine, not only that but seeing new graduates and knowing that you’ll be brothers with the fellow Marines impacts people greatly.
From what I've read, Marine Corps boot camp was once known for its brutality. Drill instructors had enormous authority and autonomy over the recruits--and didn't hesitate to use it. There were wide-ranging punishments for every real or imagined lapse in performance or discipline. As late as 1976, there were a couple of ugly incidents. At Parris Island, a DI shot a recruit through the hand, and in San Diego, a DI ordered a recruit beaten during pugil stick training (the recruit died, I believe). To the Marines reading this: What's your opinion of the old boot camp, as opposed to today's "kinder, gentler" Marine Corps? Do you feel that today's training is as good or better than the earlier, anything-goes boot camp?
Eh, I haven't joined yet but I plan to as soon as I turn 17 with my mother's permission, or if not then 18, but I feel like stress cards and all that bullshit needs to go. In battle you can't just pull out a card and tell the enemy, "Stop shooting for a second, I gotta reload my rifle!" So I think they need to get rid of that stuff, but at the same time you can't just go around telling recruits to beat each other to death. After all, the Marine Corps is all about the Brotherhood, I'm lead to believe. So beating a brother to death or giving the order to do so is absolutely unacceptable.
Most really don’t care . Physical discipline doesn’t bring a lot of results . Also back then boot camp was shorter . The current standard has been there for 40 years now so I don’t think it’s a sign of a gentler corps . BTW, are you a civilian?

I hated boot camp I was a PT beast but I was dumb as rocks so I failed a lot when it came to knowledge. I had a lot of unwanted attention on me it was a brutal time for me ngl. I felt like I didn’t belong amongst everyone else I just felt like everyone hated me but none the less I still graduated on time.

I apologize for alienating anyone, but I sorely miss the more isolated, more private, & less "festive" but very solemn graduation ceremonies that took place when I graduated in April of '68. This circus-like atmosphere detracts from what was once a very sacred celebration of a Marine recruit's personal accomplishment, & in my opinion takes away from the honor one felt in their heart & the pride of becoming a warrior designed, built, & dedicated to uphold the time-honored tradition of the Corps to end the lives of our enemy! But what I DON'T understand is WTH happened to 'Align To The Right?!' A lot of SLOPPINESS here!!!...rounded corners!...No snap crackle pop!!!...these platoons looked like week 2 platoons! EMBARASSING!

Probably will be a movie made of those battles in Fallujah. I graduated boot camp in 2002 August and then went to combat training and then 29 palms for comm school. In the fleet I got stuck having to drive around high ups because I had a humvee license, and was good on the radio. So annoying everyone got to go do cool shit, and I had to hang out with the old birds. Anyway we can only do what the Green Weanie allows us too lol 😂 glad you’re home brother. ❤️

Backlash Studios I respect your opinion for what it is, you have to understand that being Marine, or being in any branch for that matter carries a burden on peoples life’s much greater than you could imagine, not only that but seeing new graduates and knowing that you’ll be brothers with the fellow Marines impacts people greatly.
From what I've read, Marine Corps boot camp was once known for its brutality. Drill instructors had enormous authority and autonomy over the recruits--and didn't hesitate to use it. There were wide-ranging punishments for every real or imagined lapse in performance or discipline. As late as 1976, there were a couple of ugly incidents. At Parris Island, a DI shot a recruit through the hand, and in San Diego, a DI ordered a recruit beaten during pugil stick training (the recruit died, I believe).
To the Marines reading this: What's your opinion of the old boot camp, as opposed to today's "kinder, gentler" Marine Corps? Do you feel that today's training is as good or better than the earlier, anything-goes boot camp?
Eh, I haven't joined yet but I plan to as soon as I turn 17 with my mother's permission, or if not then 18, but I feel like stress cards and all that bullshit needs to go. In battle you can't just pull out a card and tell the enemy, "Stop shooting for a second, I gotta reload my rifle!" So I think they need to get rid of that stuff, but at the same time you can't just go around telling recruits to beat each other to death. After all, the Marine Corps is all about the Brotherhood, I'm lead to believe. So beating a brother to death or giving the order to do so is absolutely unacceptable.

Most really don’t care . Physical discipline doesn’t bring a lot of results . Also back then boot camp was shorter . The current standard has been there for 40 years now so I don’t think it’s a sign of a gentler corps . BTW, are you a civilian?

I hated boot camp I was a PT beast but I was dumb as rocks so I failed a lot when it came to knowledge. I had a lot of unwanted attention on me it was a brutal time for me ngl. I felt like I didn’t belong amongst everyone else I just felt like everyone hated me but none the less I still graduated on time.

I apologize for alienating anyone, but I sorely miss the more isolated, more private, & less "festive" but very solemn graduation ceremonies that took place when I graduated in April of '68. This circus-like atmosphere detracts from what was once a very sacred celebration of a Marine recruit's personal accomplishment, & in my opinion takes away from the honor one felt in their heart & the pride of becoming a warrior designed, built, & dedicated to uphold the time-honored tradition of the Corps to end the lives of our enemy! But what I DON'T understand is WTH happened to 'Align To The Right?!' A lot of SLOPPINESS here!!!...rounded corners!...No snap crackle pop!!!...these platoons looked like week 2 platoons! EMBARASSING!
