Marine Corps Boot Camp - Nighttime Routine

  • Ever wonder "What do Marine recruits go through in boot camp?" From day 1 through USMC graduation Marine Corps recruits go through a strict routine at bedtime each night. Occasionally drill instructors add a few extra minutes to learn. This example shows recruits practicing drill routines with their rifles before they "hit the rack" to rest up for the next day of training. You can be assured that they sleep well because they are constantly on the go every minute of every day.
The USMC boot camp experience is like nothing else in the world. From the first day through graduation, Marine Corps recruits are always learning.
This is Parris Island, it is here were male recruits who live east of the Mississippi river and all female recruits are transformed into Marines. MCRD San Diego boot camp has the exact same training for recruits west of the Mississippi river and there are plans to start sending female recruits to MCRD San Diego in the future.
Over the 12 weeks of Marine Corps recruit training USMC recruits will be tested more than they could have ever imagined physically, mentally and emotionally. The training is intense and uncompromising, but they will find parts of themselves they never knew were there. They will be broken down and rebuilt from the ground up as a disciplined, motivated and dedicated warrior for their nation…they will be United States Marines.
Within minutes of their arrival on Parris Island the new recruits surrender the last physical reminders of their past identity as a civilian such as candy, snacks, cigarettes and for the men… their hair. Welcome to the receiving phase of Marine training.
After passing their initial strength test, Marine Corps recruit training begins with a moment these recruits will never forget. It’s time to meet their drill instructors.
They are the backbone of the Marine Corps, demanding perfectionists who monopolize every waking hour of the recruits’ lives. Every second of every day will be spent with these drill instructors who will mold them into Marines. They will instill in them, through their own example, the upmost levels of professionalism, teamwork, discipline, and confidence. They really do make Marines.
The next 3 days is the period known as “Forming.” It is nothing short of learning a new language, a new culture, a fast paced way of life that starts with the willing obedience of every order. Recruits learn a complete new way of speaking and use language and terminology they will use throughout their entire time in the Marine Corps. The Drill Instructors physically, psychologically, and mentally challenge the recruits, including yelling at maximum volume and intimidation, to simulate stress of the battlefield and elicit immediate compliance to instructions.
Marine Corps Recruit Training is broken down into four basic Phases.
Phase 1 lasts approximately three weeks. Here, discipline will begin to be instilled in recruits by disorienting them and breaking them from old civilian habits and mindsets. Drill Instructors begin reinforcing the mental and physical standards needed to perform under stressful situations that could be experienced in combat.
Phase 2 begins on Training Day 19 with Basic Water Survival Training… also known as swim qual. By definition, the Marine Corps is an amphibious assault force. Therefore all Marine recruits are required to know how to survive in the water. Recruits receive basic water survival training at the indoor pool, which is safely conducted by specially trained instructors. Training in combat water survival develops a recruit’s confidence in the water.
Phase Three of Marine training is essentially the ‘polishing of the recruits, when their skill and knowledge are honed and tested. Phase 3 also has the Marine Corps Crucible. The Crucible is the culminating event in recruit training, and in order to become a Marine, all recruits must complete and pass a minimum of 80% of the events. After passing The Crucible, recruits participate in the Marine Corps Emblem Ceremony which means they had what it takes to become a Marine.
During Phase 4 of Marine basic training, the new Marines begin to transition from their roles as recruits into that of United States Marines. During this phase new Marines now call their Drill Instructors by their rank. Instead of “Sir” or “Ma’am,” it is “Sgt” or “SSgt”. The Drill Instructors continue mentoring the new Marines by conducting discussion periods on critical topics that will help the new Marines to be successful in their transition to the operational forces.

This may sound counterintuitive but I think I’ve had some of the most relaxing moments of my life in boot camp. Our DIs allowed us evening prayer every night and during square away time we could see the sunset over the bay from our third deck squad bay. We even saw fireworks for the Fourth of July and I must say that I have never know such peace of mind as I knew then.

I remember my platoon doing something similar to that when I was in boot camp. We trained every night until we got it right without the music. Then we finally did it to the music and one recruit dropped his rifle. The music was shut off and these other drill instructors, in addition to the ones assigned to us, came literally out of no where and I was like Black Friday all over again. We were so mad at him we didn't talk to him the rest of training.

I went thru Marine boot on Parris Island in the summer of '75, 3rd Battalion, platoon 329...it was getting near graduation in 3rd phase and we were getting a little slap happy. We were getting ready to hit the racks and were on line and we always did an Eyes right and then Count off and the DI's expected synchronized perfection and by phase 3 we were always perfect, but for some reason on this night someone yelled their number off key/octave and it just continued to ripple around the platoon. When we finished our DI said okay do it again Ladies, Eyes right, Count off. It was completely spontaneous, but again we did the same thing, every recruit yelling his number during count off up and down the octave range. I was expecting the shit to hit the fan but our DI just said Okay Ladies and turned around and went in his hutch leaving us on line and told the fire watch to kill the lights. So having not been given the command to mount up we all just stood on line in the dark and then as the time passed we all kind of sheepishly climbed in our racks. I laid there wondering what the hell our punishment would be and didn't have to wait long to find out. About 1am the lights go on and our DI is yelling as normal to get the fuck up but then tells us stop getting dressed, to stay in your skivvies and flip flops, platoon formation out front. Right then I knew we were screwed; in 1st phase when they would get really pissed at us they'd take us to the "rose garden" which was a vined area under some oak trees across the street from our barracks with lots of thorns. They'd PT us there but with utilities and boots it really wasn't a big deal...but now our DI was marching us over there in the middle of the night in skivvies and flip flops and he PT'd the hell out of us. We were all covered in thorns with visible blood marks through or white skivvies. He then marched us back and put us in the racks and so we slept with thorns in us. The next morning he made sure we all got dressed without picking any thorns out so we went thru an entire training day with thorns still in us until we got to clean ourselves up that night. That evening he again gave us the Eyes right and then Count off commands and we did it with perfect precision...he just smiled and said Thank You Ladies.

The Marine Corps lost a brother, on Tuesday, 16 June, 2020
Wolfgang "wolf" Weninger, was killed in training in Georgia. Although I didn't know him, and I only knew of him after I heard of his death, I feel like we have lost something, when men like this die there is no way to avoid the emptiness left in their absence. I only hope that what happened at that jump school never happens again. My heart is breaking for his Father and his whole family. I know how it feels when you try your best to talk your son out of the Marines, hoping that they go Air Force, or Navy, and then when you get the news that he went with 0311 contract, OMG, you feel like your sending your baby into the lions den. I pray to God that my own boy gets home safe, and I hurt for the Weninger family who is right now going thru what feels like an unbearable loss. I am so very sorry that your having to face this horrible and tragic event.

Honestly don't worry about that stuff at your age. Honestly if you want to enlist as soon as possible than worry about graduating high school. In the 3 or so years before you graduate much can happen, and there is an okay chance you will not want you become a marine. And as advice goes it is just as simple as trying as hard as you can at all times, being organized, and not doing stupid shit. Honestly there is no pressure because even if you get chewed out often or do stupid shit you are still gonna graduate, around 20% of recruits get sent out and that is because they either get injured (most common) or simply just quit, so just have a level head.

The worse part of Army boot camp for me anyway was Sundays or if we got done with training (say 1300 or 1400 during the 5 week 12 Bravo training) and we had nothing to read or outside stimulation as we were literally locked up inside of our barracks and your thoughts inevitably drift to how you missed home and parts of your old civilian life. Maybe a 2 hour pass on Sunday but nothing during the week-this was before cellphones became common and the only calls we made were on Sundays or if we 'earned' the privilege of calling home (didn't happen until 3rd phase) from a payphone with our overpriced prepaid cards. After basic we shifted into our OSUT 12 Bravo training and it was basically the same as boot camp except we were called 'soldier' instead of 'recruit' and we actually got trucked back to base instead of humping it everywhere. Just that little change made us feel like we were walking in tall cotton.

I wanted to join but health problems disqualified me. In the military there is no "me" or "I" it is "we" and "us". You are not black or white or any other color, you're a soldier. We as Americans need to stop putting criminals on high horses, need to stop rioting because someone broke the law, and we need to stop thinking our color is better or of more value then anyone else. This isn't a war against white police officers, this is a movement to address and vent the anger we feel for our black people who were killed mainly out of fear. Alton Sterling was completely restrained by 2 officers, both sitting on one of his arms, so why did they feel the need to shoot him (at close range) in his chest?
