Big Breakfast on the Traeger Flatrock Griddle

- This big breakfast on the Traeger Flatrock griddle is our 2nd cook on the new flat top grill from Traeger, and we really put it to the test! For this griddle breakfast, we made our favorite muffin mix pancakes (like a cross between muffins and pancakes - made with packaged muffin mix), hash browns, bacon, sausage, omelettes, and over easy eggs. And the Traeger Flatrock performed beautifully!
Cooking a big breakfast on the griddle, with hash browns and pancakes especially, really teaches you a lot about a new griddle. That’s because with the light color and flat surface of pancake batter and shredded hash browns you can really see the temperature zones and the hot and cool spots on the griddle. If some of your pancakes are darker, that means that they were sitting in a hotter spot. The lighter color on certain pancakes shows you that you’ve got a cooler spot.
But for this Traeger griddle breakfast, the pancakes cooked incredibly evenly… even when a different burner was on high. Overall, I was very impressed with the “true zone cooking”, and how quickly the griddle responded to a change in the temperature knobs.
What I have I learned so far about the Traeger Flatrock Flat Top Grill, now that I’ve got a few cooks under my belt? You’ll have to watch me make this giant griddle breakfast to find out!

I'm in the market and nearly bought a Pitt Boss Ultimate today. After watching this evaluation of the new Traeger, I'm going to wait and read more Traeger reviews. Right now, I'm blown away by it.
WOW....that interesting...especially the huge difference in them...let us know if we can hellp
So it's been a year...what did you buy and why? Lessons learned ?
Thanks for sharing with us Neil and Amy, it all came to gether beautifully today. On your daughters birthday too. Really learned ea lot today also. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. When you get the lid off and the griddle turned around all will be a lot easier for you and you'll still be able to set the lid off and on fairly easy too. Fred.
Yeah spot on Fred....thanks
The griddle did pretty good with the heat temperatures. You gave us good information with the temperature settings. You also did a great job with that huge breakfast Neal. It's nighttime right now and I can't wait to eat breakfast tomorrow after seeing you cook that great breakfast.👍 I live in a small city and haven't seen that muffin pancake mix. Have to drive 45 minutes one way to another city that has more grocery stores to look for that mix. Hopefully I will find it there. Thank you once again. Have a good one. And your wife does a great job with the camera and helping you with information too.
Thanks Robert...i know the feeling about the drive...
New to the griddle game! I had ordered the Sam’s Club/Members Mark 36”, but returned it and bought this Traeger one from Ace this week 🎉😊
Welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy it...i love mine...as of now its my favorite
Neal and Amy! Always AMAZING. I haven't pulled the traeger on my first griddle purchase yet. But it will be soon. Thank You for sharing.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank You so much for your videos, and channel.. I am new to flat top grills (long time smoker enthusiast) and just ordered my first one (the Traeger). It's being delivered in a few days, and I am glad I have tons of videos to watch for beginners on your channel until then. I am confident that I will get on the right path. Happy 4th!!
Hey thats awesome...cheers
This is a great instructional video on just learning your griddle, its heat zones, and how it reacts no matter what the brand, with the various groceries to go down on it. Not a reason for me to change griddles but always can learn more about the ones I have. Good one.
Thanks Craig....always appreciate it
Wow. Color me impressed. That’s a heck of a griddle
hahahahah I hear ya
Looks like they pretty much hit the nail on the head with the Flatrock griddle, looks like it’s cooking great for you.
liking it for sure....
Never though I'd want to weigh the option of upgrading my griddle especially when I saw the price but I'm getting closer to entertaining the idea. Overall happy with my blackstone but after seeing this in store and watching the few videos you have out on it and actually showcasing the traegers pros and cons vs other content creators that have reviewed the flat rock.
yeah no doubt....just forget the price for one second and just feel it....in person and look a the actual size.....its a unit for sure...no clue about the sales and how they feel about it...but geeze its nice..
Wow. That thing impressed me with the evenness. Great cook
You and me both!
Excellent cook Neal! Looks like you doing okay with your new machine 😀👏. Still like my Blackstone but I would definitely go this route if I ever did a change up, very impressive so far! Can’t wait for the next one. Also thanks for tip on the the mix 😆. Cheers brother 🍻
thanks so much...cheers..
thank you amy for asking the questions many of us have
Absolutely....
Awesome job the way you explained everything on the heat zones makes me feel a lot better with my new Traeger flat rock
Awesome..reach out if we can help
Just wanted to thank you for all the content on the griddles. Decided to go for the flat rock and it will be delivered on Monday. Love your content and will be back for more :)
Heck yeah...I love mine...still today....
@@TheFlatTopKing Just got notification my Flatrock order was cancelled because the store was made aware of "a potential safety or performance issue and it has been canceled from your order". Have you heard anything about an issue or a recall that is pending??
@@craigbolton1147 absolutely not. Please keep me posted. First I have heard
@@craigbolton1147 so I just talked directly with Traeger. I was assured that’s not the case. I was told they are 100 out if stock at the moment.
@@TheFlatTopKing I also called Traeger 2-3 days ago and was told the only issue was parts availability and they were sold out. I just called a local Ace HW that had them in stock and the guy read to me the Traeger "Stop Sale" notice on the Flatrock because of a potential fire hazard with the burners?? They are not allowed to sell them right now and noticed Home Depot near my house completely removed them from display. I don't have any reason to not believe the guy at Ace HW - he read me the notice. I don't think Traeger is being transparent :(
Time to eat! Another great BIG breakfast cook Neal! Pretty impressive zone cooking on that Traeger too. You gotta try adding some ham steaks. Congrats on hitting the 80K subscribers! Cheers brother!
Good call! Thanks Jay...
I have to say, I'm really impressed with the even cooking.
Yeah...really gets to corner to corner
I wish my local grocery store carried the hash brown patties. I absolutely loved them back in the day. Breakfast looks delicious 👑. 🍽️
Walmart does but they tend to sell out quick and they are slow to restock
yeah...really good...
Well done, it may be a breakfast for dinner kind of night.
Absolutely
I’m a Lefty. Maybe this was build for us??? I took my Griddle to a sheet metal shop for a fix for the handle issues. Got it back today and they look good. SS about 3.5” tall then tapered to the front. I will post pics tomorrow after I get home and verify they will work. They are SS they slide over and can be removed for cleaning and handle access. They played with it and made them $50. A buy if they work as I hope
I can’t leave a photo here. Posted on the Griddle Group on Facebook
TY....saw it...
I was looking at getting a Blackstone. That said. I'm now leaning Flatrock!!!
Lean hard...its a beast
Nice review. So, she’s strong, looks good and she can cook. All that overshadows those side handle, food escape slots.
My redneck ideas...ill put aluminum foil for a bit...every griddle has a deal breaker for me...who knows...its like a car...they all have things you like and don't like and different prices as well...but they all get you to point a to point b...
I'm also left handed, and my char-grillers' grease trap is also on the left side.
In my cooking classes I've taken with my job, I'm told that seasoning potatoes before cooking them slows the cooking process. I'm going to do an experiment on my griddle and see how that plays out.
Absolutely...would love the feedback..I have not heard that...especially when cooking in water of course we are always taught to season the water...thanks for sharing
Great review! Breakfast looks great! I’m hungry!
thanks NIck....
Did you ever find a "wind guard" to cover the handle openings to keep the food in?
You guys did a good job with this video, one question about the grease trap, do you find the heat is excessive coming out of the grease opening? Keep the videos coming, they are enjoyable.
does heat come out...yes...its it a problem...absolutely not...the griddle itself is hot...and 99.9 of the time your hand is not over the trap...is cooking on the griddle or not even close to the griddle..
Good Job, Keep it up the info is very helpful
Very nice, looks like a good comeback!
Absolutely
I know you think the Weber looks and feels like Mattel compared to the Traeger, but you seemed just as excited about the Weber performance, heat zones, etc. Do you think the Traeger is worth double the price of the Weber 28"?
Well I think like this...its not my judgment...Its like a car...all price points for everyone. But they all get you to point A to point b....
@@TheFlatTopKing It is your judgement I'm asking for. Would you pay twice as much as the Weber if it was your money?
Alright here we go. Cook on.
ahahahha on your mark
fantastic breakfast, just wish I could taste it!!
Thank you
Hi Neil and Amy, I was wondering if you have ever tried the Halo Elite 3B or 4B Griddles. I have watch a number of your videos talking about Blackstone, Traeger etc. I was hoping to get your perspective on the Halo system.
You do a good job man. Thanks.
Yes sir...
I watched the Weber and Treager big breakfast cook back to back, you loved them both but that giddy sparkle you had with the Treager says your preference 😂
yeah its just built different...absolutely solid...
If this thing was around when I bought the Pit Boss 5 Burner Ultimate, I might have bought it instead. I'm happy with mine, but that thing does look super well built, and the box it came in looked really neat.
Absolutely...I think it will be interesting to see the future of there griddles..what line are they going to do...just this one...different sizes...etc
Wow! I'm impressed by the consistency in the heat zones. Good job Traeger!
Oh my!!!! That Traeger did a very even cook for you. And those eggs were beautiful (no browning or over cooking)! The only thing i've seen I would not like is the hand holds as you commented on. I would probably have steel welded into those to fill and close them off. I mean just how often do you need to lift the griddle off the frame anyway? I'm liking what I've seen so far with the Traeger though!!!!
yeah or even have a lip on the outside to hold on too and it doesn't affect the inside at all...
I want that flat rock
I think Home Depot have them on sale right now
Wow... Great performance...
And I'm Team Weber...
Traeger 1... Weber 1
yeah.....extremely close...just to bad they could not have a baby..ahahhaha
Hey guys! Looks like you're getting more comfortable with the particular characteristics of this griddle. Not being a fan of the shredded potato type of hash browns, I've got to say those looked pretty danged good! I still prefer my good, old home fries though...
Funny you make that....we went on a fishing trip with my Dad and just made em....good ole potatoes...
The temp control on that thing looks to be pretty impressive. I hope enough folks are paying attention to how you work those variations. All those folks who gripe about the price might miss that there's value in zone temp management that may be worth a premium for better outcomes. AND............another big attaboy on no brown bottom eggs.............preach the gospel son, preach it!!
ahhaaaahaha its almost a thing of beauty....
How many times did you season the griddle? Thinking about getting the flat rock.
I think 5 to 7....
Very good cook!! I like that griddle. I may have to check into one and replace my Blackstone….. What is your mixture on your seasoning?? I’d like to make my own seasoning with Salt Pepper & Garlic but I really don’t know what the ratio would be….
Thanks again for such great videos. I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos!!
Hope you’re feeling better!!!
Kent
Yeah feeling better for sure...thanks for asking. As far the seasoning I have been working to get it nailed down and one day bottle it...so its kinda kept close to the chest...ahahaha
if you had to do it over again (a year later) would you sand down the rough surface of the flatrock before initial seasoning? I suspect it doenn't make a difference, other than the number of initial seasoning cycles you have to go through.
100 not… and because of that decision… I have actually stopped doing that method. I think the roughness helps deeper layers of seasoning stick… thin yes but more layers.
Awesome 👍 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🤍 where those particular hash browns frozen
Nope these are refrigerated...
About a container of that beef tallow as well and for the price I wasn't impressed either. I would rather use ghee with hash browns. It has a high smoke point. It has a good buttery flavor!
Yeah absolutely...thats what I just told Amy
after cooking do you add oil to the clean surface?
Depends on what im cooking...if I can keep the same oils down till next time....I typically steam clean with water...dry completely with heat...and reoil and shutdown...
Where did you pick up the pancake mix from. Great looking breakfast 👍
oohhh just common matha white muffin mix...or the pancake mix we use all the normal brands and have not found any difference...Pioneer...Krustez and Bisquick
Looks great. The zones seem to work really well. But is it worth the $900 instead of the less expensive Weber or even a blackstone?
thats up to each and every person...just like cars...they have different price tags but all get you to point a to point b...
Nah, i`m still not impressed with that $900 + TAX price tag.
I`ll continue using my $300 Blackstone 36" which works just perfectly fine. Great video regardless guys.
thanks Dee
Looks to me Traegers first Griddle is a win. Poor Blackstone is falling behind fast.
Same thoughts. Traeger is a big contender on the griddle scene, but you pay a premium price for it.
Huge fan of yours! Thinking about buying the Traeger flat top based on your recommendation but now it’s under a huge recall so should i still buy it?
Unfortunately I dont know the whole story..This is my understanding, Mine was not considered a recall...there was a run of units that had the control knobs labeled wrong...thus making the unit on when off etc...Really had nothing to do with the actual structure or overall performance..as of today its still my favorite...but something else could come out this spring etc...but so far...
Ok thanks for the quick response I really appreciate this.
Have you tried using a thermal camera? Might be cool way to see hot spots
Have not...
I know you were impressed with the Weber cooking performance. Do you feel the Traeger is as good or better than the Weber? $900 pill for Traeger is hard to swallow but $450 is a little easier if there really isn't much difference in cooking performance.
Thanks Curtis...the preformed was really close..weber better on the low end and Traeger on the high end with temps....I see it like this...its like a car...many price points...but they all get you to point a to point b...up to the individual to pay
@@TheFlatTopKing As I do not own on yet but following you and watching your videos it seems lower temps are used in cooking more than the screamig hot temps that traeger may benefit from. IS that a correct statement?
@@curtisrogers4190 I would say yes..its an absolute benefit to be able to actually control the temps...some griddles I have owned have been ridiculous on low...hitting high to mid 400s...so even at 375 ish its a nice tradeoff...then the weber is hitting lower...but takes longer to get hot...
To my liking, dehydrated hash browns crisp up better than frozen
I agree...i spit the difference and buy refrigerated hahahah....hey if you ever have frozen just thaw out and they are alot better....we did that on the Weber breakfast for they first time and really made a difference
On me way, be about 10 hours, ten hours to late🤣🤣🤣🤣brilliant cook up matey as per usual, 100K subs wont be long👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎🏴Looks absolute pukka👍🏻
Thanks so much bud....really appreciate it...cheers
Wondering how to ignite the grill without plugging in. I just got mine and I saw a box under the back that hangs down further. Is the 9volt battery back there? Currently first cook I had to plug in to ignite.
In the instructions/maunal...you need to put a battery in the back...that will power the igniter...I do not use mine plugged in...
Great review and awesome looking cook!!
Thanks Jake...
What are your thoughts on lightly sanding the top with a high grit sandpaper prior to seasoning it?
so I am going to try to keep this short...but hang with me...
I have actually done that and honestly not that impressed..'
this griddle did not have uneven high spots...more of even roughing...hard to explain but....
after seasoning this...I think since the griddle was so peaky and valley....but even...the amount of layers of oil was more than normal....thus creating a fantastic thick layer thats been the best to date..
Hello,
I also have a Flatrock. I was cooking on medium/low and my hands/fingers were on fire after a minute while using the spatulas and browning the meat.
Do your hands just eventually get use to it? Do you have any tips? How do you stand the heat?
And I’m a Houston Firefighter🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️!! GEEEEZZ
LOL
well....kinda a hard answer for sure....do my hands get hot...yes...on all griddles...but its more like a boxing match....stick and go...jab and go...also thats exactly why I prefer my go to spatulas....people make fun all the time...but this is why..i am comfortable with them...so its less time on the griddle...some times move the products closer to the front as well...and with a traeger the drain hole has heat escaping....thats on the big cons...and i know they are going to address it...when the griddle is updated
How do you keep the food warm while you cook the rest of your breakfast/pancakes? (Specially so your hash browns stay crispy )
3 things come to mind...timing....when to start other foods....Order...what to cook when....and either using a sheet pan and throwing in oven...using a cooler side of griddle...or some have a heating or cooling rack...We use the oven sometimes especially when cooking hibachi
Looks like Blackstone as come out with a new griddle -Blackstone 36-in Culinary Cabinet. They claim it has even heat distribution. Any thoughts on the new griddle?
Well yeah but only thoughts. Seems interesting and as far as I know it’s only available at Lowe’s. Interesting when it’s so new technology. Not sure why it’s not more widely available.
Maybe they will send one to you to try out.
@@DS-xl1ro I wish. From my understanding that’s something they don’t do unless your part of the group. I honestly have planned on getting it. Just wanted to see if anything else comes out
Are the gray patches on the Flatrock normal? Or should it be more black all over? (I have them on mine)
Where are we talking...not familiar with those...
Apologies for the late reply. Mine looks like I have discolored grey areas. Mostly where I've cooked food. @@TheFlatTopKing
You could also use that beef tallow to make homemade flour tortillas
ooohhhh absolutely...we did...and have videos about em...
@@TheFlatTopKing awesome
LoCo Griddle vs. Flatrock? Do you have a preference?
I personally don’t have experience with the loco
Which has better temp zone control, Weber or Traeger?
Thats not a fair question....I will answer like this...Weber has a better low...not as strong high end...Traeger is the second best low but a fantastic high end. Traeger has a better zone but weber is right there...both cook extremely even.....its incredibly close...for the ones to save a buck...weber...ones that have the extra..Traeger..i have publicly stated many times now Traeger as of now is my hands down favorite
So what is your everyday griddle that you use?
Well I use them all because of videos. If I had to only choose one right now it would be Traeger. Then Weber then Halo
@@TheFlatTopKing I'm seriously looking at the Traeger but I ran across a Cabelo's 36" that has alot of features, such as foldable side shelves and the grease trap is located in the front left corner. I hope one day you might do a review of that one.
The Flat Top King - out of all the griddles out there what is your favorite ?
Like most or kids...they all have some flaws but you love em...still waiting on the all everything one...
So you don't have a favorite.
is traeger sending out free griddles to every youtube cook right now in order to gain popularity? all of them are coming out with 20 minute traeger ads these days
no clue what the future holds with them...about sizes and features etc...should be interesting
I am very impressed with the new griddle, would like to know how it compares to the Pit Boss Ultimate Griddle.
You and me both!....I think the biggest is of course the cooking service...really no different at first...but will the top hold up over time...mine did not....
Good vid. Well done. Ok...it's a flat grill. A wicked expensive flat grill, with issues and improvements. Nowhere near the price, IMO. Maybe over time figuring in gas money savings, but tin foil can modify other grills. Keep rocking!
thanks Brian
Promising….
Yes
Maybe cover your hand holes with foil for now?
could be a good solution...
That seemed like it cooked perfectly, SOLID execution there Brotha 🫡 !! So what’s next in the queue may I ask, are you going tried & true like some smashy’s? Or is the Madd Scientist going to swing for the fences with a Twist cook 🤔🤔! Awesome episode y’all, Cheers 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Man its all up in the air right now...what did he make...
Excuse my bacon!
At this price point, I would think there would be an under unit shelf. Not a deal breaker but still disappointing!
Love your videos but my wife just said you sound like Danny McBride and now I can’t un-hear it 😂
Sorry about that ahhahahhaha
P
LOL for 500 I can buy the BLackstone with what 200 more square inches? and FOUR burners? and a hood that can melt cheese? Or I could buy this thing for 900 dollars. no way
Hey thats up to you..thats what its all about...its my favorite so far out of any griddle to date....so...
Store bought beef tallow is pointless. Doesn’t add any flavor. If you have your own beef trimmings and smoke them in a pan and collect the tallow, it imparts a hint of smoke on your griddle cooks.
Yeah,....good point
Beef tallow people commenting that it makes everything taste better in 3... 2... 1...
hahaaah it may do it but this stuff is just BLAH...zero flavor
Noted here that it does not need to be plugged into 120v to start up. Plug in if you want fuel levels. Heading to Home D now to buy one. Great reviews, and Neil, thanks for your service my fellow veteran. But I gotta say, Go Air Force!
ahahha Thanks bud....thanks for your service as well....GO Navy
Is there a place for a battery?
@@esparza40oz Yes it is a 9v battery holder in the back of griddle, comes with battery
To me, the hashbrowns are the make or break breakfast item. And buddy, you are definitely a blackbelt when it comes to cooking perfect ones! Great video and I'm pretty impressed with the performance of the Traeger, heat zones, seasoning, etc. Keep up the good work!
Unfortunately mine always turn out soggy.
@@musclemanmitch3380 I have the same issue. Next time I cook hashbrowns I'm going to double the fat and double the cook time time on the 1st side.
Heat and patience...think about the idea of FRYING the potatoes...it just takes time and plenty of oil, butter what ever
I'm still a Blackstone fan, but really like this Traeger... Except for the grease hole placement.. I so like the rear center slot trap on the Blackstone. Out of the way, if you level it just right, you can have the grease flow to the back and not mess with your cooking and moving the food around flip, serve, etc..
Plus, the electric Air Fryer on the Blackstone trumps any other grill so far for what I use the whole package for. :)
Thats exactly what its all about....doing pros and cons for each person...great insight...
The Traeger did a very good job, i’m impressed. The breakfast. Oh wow!
Ty...yeah like it alot...
Pretty awesome cook. I am fairly new to griddling but love it. We bought a small Blackstone for our RV to fill the spot of the gas grille in the outdoor kitchen. The griddle adds so much flavor to the cook. I have been a Traeger person for several years and love their products. I keep upgrading my smoker as they come out with new ones. I believe in Traeger's design and build teams. Their customer service is phenomenal. I will be getting one of these griddles as soon as I can find one. Not easy to find right now as they ramp up production.
Awesome Robert.....thanks for commenting
I bet you could fashion a guard for those side holes with some sheet metal. It won't be long and someone will be selling them. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you😊 The multizone cooking performance was demonstrated well with this cook👍😊
Spot on Bobbi...wont be long for sure...heck knowing me good ol aluminum foil..ahahahaha
Love your passion. Keep it going
Thanks Chris...
I’ve been in the market looking for a griddle (first time) & have been dependent on your videos because of how thorough you test each griddle. You’ve sold me on the Flatrock & it’s a great time since it’s on sale.
Great job on your videos!
I have a question though. You’ve got an awesome prep table & I was wondering if you have a link to that cart/table? Or any recommendations?
Do you need to worry about scratching the cook surface? I saw another video of someone cleaning up after a cook and the utensil left major scratch streaks 😯
that could not have been what you actually saw...and its extremely common for beginners or unexperienced. Sometimes is unburned oil that leaves streaks...its hot enough to start the polymerization process....but not hot enough to continue though the process...
As for your question...can you scratch...yes...but thats with any griddle...which is why I teach why i love my spaulata...rounded edges...lastly...honest its not a big deal if you know how to fix it...its steel and can be fixed everyday...
@@TheFlatTopKing maybe it wasn’t actual scratches, but sure looked like it. Do you sell this rounded spatula?
I am not buying one found out they will not work on natural gas only propane
The handles and the grease trap only take time to get used to...m
The Traeger must be an excellent griddle
I have a Pitt boss Sierra (Walmart version of the ultimate), and have been REALLY disappointed with the build quality. I had the camp chef on my list as replacement, but wondering if the camp chef is closer to the Pitt boss in terms of build quality than it is the traeger? Is the camp chef pretty solid, or do they all have a flimsy quality to them compared to the traeger?
Champ Chef is the closest to the Traeger for build Quick and I swear by my old Camp Chef...I have mentioned several times I wish I still had it..
I wasn’t impressed with the Weber. But this Traeger is something I could see replacing the Camp Chef. Love the temp control and hood. And love the big side tables.
Yes sir....the tables reach from neighbor to neighbor..ahaahahah
Time on the heat is key. Imagine putting a cast iron pan over a burner on the stove. While the handle is never over the burner, at some point the heat through the cast iron will eventually reach the handle and burn your hand. Traeger has smartly designed a system to limit the amount of time that bleed over occurs,,,but rest assured, if you leave it on long enough that heat will spread. I think you did a nice job of demonstrating that the Traeger system allows you to control the heat zones for a longer period of time. Thanks for the video.
good in depth comment thank you
I went and picked up some wind guards for a black stone and modified them and they work perfect for covering them holes up.
Awesome...
I'm leaning hard towards this Traeger griddle, I already have the Timberline 1300 so might as well stay with the Traeger brand.
Cant go wrong...its a beast...wish some things were Different but...its like that on all of them

ahhaaaahaha She is nuts about her bacon...
Grease trap is just in the wrong place doesn’t make sense at all. All the cut outs on the sides. Just seems like they wanted to be different just to be different.
No clue...interesting to say the least....
