I'm hoping Palworld ends up being better than I'm expecting upon release, but it's being developed by the same company that developed Craftopia (Pocketpair), which released in 2020 and to this day is still basically a barebones nothing of a game. I'm wondering how they're handling the development of both of these games simultaneously without either of them suffering as a result of them spreading themselves too thin.
The way i view craftopia just based on its design and how they update it is it seems more like craftopia is more like a game they were/are using to test their ideas.
I suppose it's possible? But the game was launched with all these grandiose ideas and things they'd talked about ages ago which most of still to this day haven't even been addressed or added.
Yeah whenever i see folks excited for Palworld I just think back to Craftopia and think to myself "theres no way this isnt just gonna be another Craftopia situation"
They are still going to update Craftopia it's just taking awhile for the big update. Game feels cheap, let's hope Palworld doesn't get the same treatment as Craftopia
I prefer pokemon like games like Coromon and Nexomon. For some reason I have trouble trying new types of games. Pokemon is all I play when I have free time now and it's what I like. Nexomon and Coromon were a blast to play so I'm looking forward to what's next in those series.
Temtem may interest you it's out recently on Switch. I'm going to buy it after completing my Polished Crystal rom hack and looking forward for Lumentale as well.
The Mon Direct got me to finally get back to playing Disc Creatures and its pretty cool! My only complaint is the level curve falls into the trap that a lot of "we're going for that old pokemon feel" games fall into of it takes AGES to level up and I hope Disc Creatures World can address that.
Great list with very reasonablepoints Ed! It''s certainly an exciting time in the genre- personally it's all about Casette Beasts. A lot of the others look great but I only have a switch 😅 Actually I'm also hyped for Abomination and (hopefully 2023?) Patch Quest for switch. Been praying those make the jump for a long time😁
Cassette Beasts shares my fusion idea. Looks like I'll have to innovate it. Never thought another game would do it so well that I'd have to change my way.
Im so excited for Palworld and that other open world one.... Skyclimbers also sounds really exciting. Being kind in a "Cruel World Sim" is really hard and that makes it that much more appealing.
I wanna add to your mention of the "Palworld should use laser guns" argument: Laser guns wouldn't be as funny as normal guns. Normal guns have a certain shock value that I think the game is going for.
I'm saying this a lot lately, but 2023 and 2024 are going to be two awesome years for Monster Taming games. I am personally hyped by Creature Keepers also, that didn't make It into the list. There's also a whole bunch of cool Pokémon hackrom and fakemon developping this year
If anything, Palworld seems to have the same problem The Good Dinosaur does, where the backgrounds are super realistic and the creatures (including humans) are highly stylized. It just looks. *Really off.*
Even before seeing Palworld and Lumentale on here, I called that Cassette Beasts would be near the top but lost it seeing it at number 1.May also have to try Myth Caller.
Great list. I especially love how you give your opinions on game types but still give a fair shake to the ones that aren't your preference. For my taste, your style and mix of reporting/commentary/opinion are superlative.
Ok, Skyclimbers really caught my attention for combining monster taming with city-building. See, I've been working on my own #monstertaming setting. Mostly a worldbuilding project, but I've identified one aspect I would love to turn into a monster-taming-meets-city-building game. My #keirexsandbox is a post-apocalyptic twist on monster-taming, with the "monsters" being Akira-esque amalgams of flesh and advanced technology. They're also the best option for salvaging high tech. So the game would consist of (1) exploring ruins to scavenge for parts, (2) building your own keirex, (3) growing your village's standard of living, (4) fending off warlords, OR becoming one yourself. And maybe becoming the leader of the resistance that topples a warlord.
We need a new monster rancher in the US. PSX era monster rancher was something special. Nanokin looks like a Medabots type system! Medabots was fantastic as well!!
Im pretty sure that Palworld is playing all of its realistic guns and Pal abuse for the comedy factor. Like, it's meant to come off as inherently absurd that you can give your Pikachu a gun or put it to work in a sweatshop, and the realism of everything except the Pals is meant to make the contrast even more stark and ridiculous.
Only one I'm really looking forward to that you didn't have is Nexomon 3. Though to be fair I know nothing about it other than it's in the works and Nexomon Extinction was one of my favorite monster tamer games ever. Hope you get some news about it soon.
i can see kindred fates getting modded with digimon or pokemon models. love it. ark came out with info. they are doing free unreal engine 5 upgrade. :D
I backed Kindred Fates when it first dropped on Kickstarter and it still doesn't feel any closer to launching, so I'm just vibing for the most part while I wait. If it arrives, it arrives. If not, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise either.
Offputting? Palworld is literally my #1 game on this list. If it's good it will definitely be game of the year material for me, we have never seen a game like it.
Gym leader ED, Palworld posted a 15-second video of gameplay on their discord in the dev random topic. Looks like a human character releases a spell effect. It looks cool.
Really looking forward to cassette beasts, the demo really showed off its visual flare and gameplay. Really hoping the narrative is a lot of fun, and if there's some fun post game content like the old pokémon games used to have.
Seeing that Digimon fan game using sprites for the vital bracelet makes me dream and crave that they'll somehow support communication with the VB somehow. Right now, I wish that my Digimon I've exercised for could do more than just sit in my watch and do battle in the arena app 🥺
First Battle from Pokèmon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness is a song I listen to very often. I went off topic there but going back on topic I know I'm looking forward to Digimon World Next Order on Switch, I think it's coming out on PC too.
Kindred fates is what the next pokemon gameplay should be where when you battle other pokemons, you yourself control the movements and attacks of your pokemon in third-person view.
Between Lumentale and Cassette beasts, It's looking like a great set. Palworld also seems just crazy. But it almost seems a little too good to be true in some ways. And I'm just hoping it is really as good as it advertises itself.
Of those 10 listed, only Kindred Fates and Skyclimbers were known to me. But to be honest, they remain by far the two that have caught my eye the most. Pal world looks interesting to an extent. Will check it out. I’m also mildly curious about Cassette Beasts. I don’t have any interest in the others honestly.
DokeV basically looks like a game that is going to run a razor's edge. On one hand it has super high detail and super flashy animations with tons of particle effects but on the other hand... Well, there are a lot of triple A games out there and very few of them even attempts to get close to that level, simply because it's so incredibly hard to get everything running smoothly and optimized. Those animations may look great in a pre rendered video from some ridiculous dev setup, but how well is it going to run on an average gaming PC, or Arceus forfend, a console? That giant hammer animation also looked like it had a massive amount of dead time in its animation where you're either winding up for the attack or recovering after it, if this is an action RPG I'm probably very seldom going to use such an attack if I can be hit in the execution.
So I've been playing temtem for a few days now, and i accidentally cancelled an evolution thinking it's skips the animation, do i need to level it up 20 time again? Or well it evolves in a couple of levels?
for me the palworld guns has less to do with shooting bulelts and more just looking too..... stock. likeit would be better if they guns had their own aesthetic in universe.
Dont know about Lumentale in this list as the game isnt even planned to launch a bet this year (In their kickstarter the beta is planned to happen in march 2024)
Palworld looks amazing but wish it were less shooter focused. The digimon fan game is also intersting but the pocket/chibi style pushed at this level starts to drive me away. Anyway all awsome games!
Is Temtem still good? I'm looking for a new monster taming pvp game to play a friend but I'm between Temtem and Monster hunter stories 2. Which is more fun for pvp??? Need answers
If you haven't decided yet, I'd say Monster Hunter Stories 2. Due to the gene system, you can give your monsters any moves and abilities, which allows for more strategies and variety. You can also do 4 player pvp, with it being 2v2 (or 4v4, as your character fights alongside their monstie?), I'm not sure if Temtem has done that or not I haven't touched pvp in it yet
@Nibwhip Dragon I got TemTem and couldn't be any happier. The game mechanics are great and far better than pokemon. And story is actually fun. But I'm grabbing monster hunter stories next
Hey brother did u gave a look into Volzerk : Monsters and Lands Unknown it will release the end of this month it looks pretty legit also give a look into the tencent monster collector that is in the making called ROCO KINGDOM I believe it could be great?(actually this one I dont know it could be just a gacha)
If i can ever blow up my youtube channel and get the money coming in, i will hire developers to build me a custom game very similar to pokemon. Just taking all the stuff out i hate, and add tons of quality of life improvements. I have many of the details written out. So, now i just need to blow up on youtube to get to that point.
2:00 omg they’re moving away from it being an MMO?! thx god, i rly disliked the idea of it being that, i don’t think it would’ve worked as well as it could as an action adventure game
Yeah I'm not waiting much from Palworld and Kindred Fates, they look REALLY empty, and Palworld is made by the studio who made Craftopia so that ain't saying much either

That Digimon Story fangame looks so GOOOOOD
I have never heard of Nanokin before this video but I am glad I did. It looks like the “Robopon” spiritual successor of my dreams.
Hyped as heck for PALWORLD, Dokev and of course Lumentale.
Pokemon Xenoverse was incredible. My fav Pokemon game ever.

I think the only problem with Lumentale is that the battle looks a bit boring animation wise, could use some cooler effects on attacks.
