    I've been using iMOVIE for years and never had a clue on how to use the zoom or F, R or U. I was looking for some answers on whether I can delete event clips and projects if I've finalized a movie... because I have 15 years of event clips ... and found this. This will help me with the events that I have saved that I HAVEN't got around to editing...

    Thank you for this video. I’ve worked with iMovie for many years without understanding events and libraries believe it or not. Now I have a clearer understanding. Would you ever consider doing a video explaining how to organize and edit from video on an external drive. That’s one thing I want to figure out one day.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @Cocoa Brown! You are very welcome! I'm so happy that this was helpful and was able to clarify some of the concepts!
      As far as understanding how to edit from an external drive, the process would identical to editing locally on your Mac. The only difference is that your iMovie Library would be copied to the external drive and then opened up from there.
      I have another iMovie tutorial that touches on that topic that may be helpful if you haven't watched it already!

  • @pentacleman1000
    @pentacleman1000 2 роки тому +8

    I watched one of your other videos for beginners. That was good, and mentioned some of this. I think I get what you are showing here. It still roughly compares to folder organization. A named Library is like a folder, and Events are like a subfolder, and all the ways of rating and sorting are like the ways of sorting a list of files within a file window (ascending, date, kind etc.). But you didn’t explain how a Project fits into that hierarchy of organization. It sounds like a Project is like a page layout program (Quark, InDesign etc), where you are going to link to things in various locations to make a document/movie. Is that right? I can start a Project and then go into any Library and then any Event within that Library to find a Video and use it in a Project, to make a Movie! And then go into a different Library, and into a different Even to find a different Video and use that in the same Project? I think a graphic of this hierarchy might have been helpful… if I have it right.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      You are spot on @Guy Palm!
      I like the way you connect the dots. A graphic hierarchy would have been helpful, but animating it is always easier said than done in a video :-)

    Excellent tutorial; I learned so much. Ideally, I would like every project to appear separately on an external hard drive (something like episode 1, 2, 3). Does that mean each project should be its own library? Or is that system too cumbersome in your experience?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words @Francesca Texidor!
      So honestly there's no right or wrong answer here. Because you're able to open multiple libraries at once, I see no harm in having a library as each episode.
      Your only other option is to create one library and then have each episode as an Event to separate them. Either could for sure work.
      When I edit my videos in Final Cut Pro, I usually create a separate library based off the topic I'm creating about. This works for me as it keeps things separate and a little more organized.
      I think you're on the right track! I'm curious, what are you creating? episodes for a blog or your own channel?
      Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support!

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому

      Hi @Emily Ireland! Thanks for the kind words!
      I do not personally have another video on iMovie Projects currently. There are a ton of other UA-camrs who have covered this topic, but I'll give my recommendation quick.
      iMovie pretty much stores your projects in the iMovie Library. You have the ability to view them a couple different ways like: 5 Most Recent, 20 Most Recent, Modified in the last 6 months, etc... but other than that, it's pretty much ends up being a long laundry list of projects.
      I use Final Cut Pro, and it's kinda similar. I break it up by actually having multiple Libraries. It helps me manage and organize my projects and RAW original footage better for me and it makes it less overwhelming not having all of my files in one big bucket.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

    Love your videos. I’m just a bit confused as to how a video gets into an event. When you download a video to iMovie does it automatically start a new event? Separate question, could you do a video on how to edit videos on an external SSD in iMovie? I gather that one doesn’t have to download the video to your laptop but can just edit it on the SSD (like a Samsung T5). Apologies for the dumb questions. I”m an aging technophobe 😩

    Fantastic video! Do you actually use iMovie for storing all home videos? I was under the impression that iMovie and Final Cut are just for editing and that we shouldn’t be using them for storage of all our movies? Or that if we do we shouldn’t be keeping large libraries as it slows down the app etc? I must admit I keep one Final Cut library that’s 1.2TB and it’s never been an issue but I do worry about it corrupting.. or should I keep all my movies in the photos app? Ha sorry for the 20 questions 😂

    This was excellent, thank you!! I have made a mess of my library and don't know how to reorganize it. Within my Library, I have made 6 Events (one for every year since 2016) and within each of those Events (years) I have put several projects. Now all the video clips from different projects are floating around in one Event. Any idea if I can fix that? If it's too complicated, you don't have to answer, I'll leave it and move on, and thanks anyway!

    This is SO helpful; I am organizing years of family footage from an old camcorder. How can I permanently delete rejected parts of clips? I have lots of bad footage and would love to be able to slim down my library but can't figure out how to permanently delete a portion of a clip.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      I'm so happy this has been helpful for you @olympian1988!
      I am not aware of anyway to just delete a part of a clip that is rejected. The thing is, whenever you rate a selection of a clip as either a favorite or rejected, it's not doing anything to the actual original file that behind the scenes in the Library. It is purely for organizing purposes. It's only a reference.
      If you had a 5 minute video clip and marked 10 different parts as rejected, it doesn't do anything to that actual 5 minute clip. It's only there for you to hide it during the editing process.
      However, over time there are items that build up and take up a tremendous amount of storage. These are called render files. If you open iMovie and go to the Preferences, there is an option that you have for deleting "Render Files"
      I would recommend to do this. Essentially whenever you have videos in a project within iMovie, often times the computer is not fast enough to play the video back in real time. So as you add titles, pictures, transitions, videos, etc, the computer needs to "render" your projects so it creates like mini videos behind the scenes so that it can play it back for the user in real time.
      This is what rendering is. You can safely delete these and iMovie will just recreate them as needed.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Great video! My old 2009 MBP finally died and I was on PC for a couple years now just bought a new MBP and am trying to pull all my video files from multiple sources along with prior iMove library files and get them organized. Are files which begin with "clip" ones which were created from iMovie or from within a iMovie Library and should they have a corresponding origianal content movie file somewhere? Trying to see if it is okay to delete the files beginning with "clip" since when I try to open them with QuickTime it only has audio track and no video. I was told try 3rd party app to open them? Guess I am trying to understand more about do you keep original source video files in a separate folder or external drive and when you import into iMovie does it create a 2nd copy within the Library file but possibly named something different? Do you review your source files by quick view(spacebar) to see which ones you want to import into iMovie or just import them all and then go through and like or reject? Trying to get an idea of your workflow process starting with copying files from your camera. (If you did fee-based online classes I would definitely enroll). Thanks!

      Great question and welcome back to the Apple side @David Pruitt!
      So I'm not sure what files you're talking about when you say they all have "clip" in the beginning. Is the word "clip" in the file name?
      Here is my workflow that I'll attempt to summarize for both you @David Pruitt and @Lisa Herren.
      When it comes to video files (from an actual camcorder, not an iPhone or iPad), I always preview the raw files from the memory card directly in the software. I rarely look at them within the Finder.
      So I would connect camera/memory card and view files while in iMovie or Final Cut Pro (FCPX). Then I would select the files I want, which honestly for time purposes I always just copy everything off the memory card and worry about deleting files afterwards within the software.
      If you use iMovie, iMovie will always copy the files from the memory card into he iMovie Library behind the scenes and will be self contained in iMovie Library, so you would never really see those files unless you open the package contents on the library.
      If you use FCPX, you have the option to reference the video files or store them in a library. I personally like to have all the videos stored in the library. It makes it easy to manage, move if needed and I know all content is in one place. Then all I have to do is open up iMovie or FCPX and everything is always there.
      After everything is imported, I would go through and eliminate the bad clips and delete them directly from iMovie or FCPX and then iMovie actually moves it to the Mac trash to be deleted.
      Next after creating my project, I export the final video and share. With the remaining video files, it depends what I do with them. Often if I have enough storage space and the video is somewhat sentimental, I always keep the raw original footage. If it's a client project and I know I won't work on it again, I keep just the final export.
      I hope this helps a little bit! I appreciate the thought of a fee-based online class. I've been thinking about doing UA-cam Live with concepts exactly like this and viewers could ask questions and such in real time, but this is not my full time gig, so I can only dedicate a small portion of time for now. But who knows, maybe this will become my full time job! :-)
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

    Joel, I’m realizing that I incorrectly used iMovie to store all my video clips in a single library. I have so many events in a single library. It’s too big now. I’m thinking of changing events into smaller libraries, but I wonder what the best way to store my raw video files. Effectively, I was using iMovie as a folder to hold my video clips and had the video clips separately in a folder on my hard drive.
    What do you recommend about storing video clips separate from iMovie or importing all video into iMovie and use it as my main storage vessel? If so should I not even bother saving separate raw files outside of iMovie?

    Hey Joel! How do I remove the photos library from iMovie? It seems to duplicate the photos on there, and I could just pull them from the photo application if needed.

    • @Learnwithjoel

      Hi @Living in Atlanta Georgia!
      Sorry for the delayed response!
      Much of the software and Apps on the Mac are intertwined with one another. Apple Photos being one of them. When you open up iMovie, you will have direct access to your whole Apple Photos library so that you're easily able to use content from there without having to open that app also.
      GarageBand, Final Cut Pro X, Finder and a variety of other apps will do this too! It's not duplicating the files, just there for easy access!
      I hope that helps! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and so greatly appreciated!

    Hoping you will respond to this ❤ I followed your video and have successfully moved folders onto my external hard drive. All the events have reopened beautifully on my IMovie and I can see all of the folders and events including the original media and the render files perfectly BUT my actual workflow and timeline which I was currently still working on it’s completely gone 😢 which means that I will have to edit and cut all the videos again. Any advice would be SO greatly appreciated. Can’t find anything online ❤

    Ive used this product for years and never understood the storage concepts....helpful. Yesterday I imported many many clips. When I did I specified an Event but the product put the clips in an old event. I have no idea how to fix that. Then I have other clips what are now organized under another Events that are in not in the proper date range for that event. Im still lost but less lost

    I'm finally done editing my 4K video and I won't let me export it am I doing something wrong I already tried using the lowest settings for everything.
    Do I need to have all the clips in the media library in order to export my project?

      Hi @1|6 Eclipse!
      What do you mean it won't let you export? Are you getting an error message of some sort, or is it greyed out?
      Usually the clips would have to be connected in so way shape or form. Either in the library or connected via an external hard drive. If not, then yes, it would need those files to export as expected.

    Got this question for you...I want to start with Blender for animation, but my question is, can I use an external hard drive let's say with 1TB and edit my videos there, so If I don't have the budget to get a 16 or 32 GB of ram and 500 or whatever on ssd, but what about the graphics card...I mean the Nvidia Ge Force whatever and so on.

    Do you recommend having just one library? I have two and IMovie gets hung up up I don't specify which library to access.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      Hey @Brandon Lejeune! I don't see any issue with having multiple libraries, nor do I recommend to have only one. If that were the case, Apple wouldn't have the option to create multiple libraries in my opinion.
      I have seen software get hung up for various reasons, but my for me, my workflow I always open the library rather than launching iMovie as that way I know exactly what i'm opening.

    You're obviously very knowledgeable about iMovie, and I appreciate your taking the time to explain it. Unfortunately, I simply cannot wrap my brain around this filing system. Why, why, WHY, would Apple create a filing system that doesn't follow ANY of the logic that is universally understood? I am not sure I'll ever, ever find a way not to hate iMovie.

      Hi @Sue Kovall!
      Maybe it's not as clear in this video. I do have other videos on iMovie that would cover this that I'll reference below.
      The key is when you're in iMovie, if you're in an existing project, you need to exit out and go back to the main interface where you'll usually have two options across the top: "Media" and "Projects".
      From there, select Media and then on the left make sure you have your iMovie Library selected and then go to "File" menu and choose "New Event"

      @@Learnwithjoel Thank you Joel. That was helpful. Now that I made an event I went back and created a new library. Which has the photos in it from the new event. However the event does not fall under the new library. How can I put my events done previously into the new library.And I have pics in the original library which do not have an event. Can I adjust?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому

      @@suekovall4340 Happy to help! So when you're at that same location of when you created an event, you should be able to see your library as well listed below. If not, click the little > symbol next to it to show the events below. You can easily drag one event from one library to another library, but you need both libraries open. If you only have one open, go to File > Open Library and choose the other library that has the event and then you should see both libraries and corresponding events. Then drag the event to the Library name and you should see the cursor change to a green circle with a plus sign. then let go and it will move the event. Hope that helps!

    Software like this should be intuitive. I shouldn't have to be searching out third party videos on google just to figure out the basic file structure of a consumer level video editor. I'm not trying to make The Godfather here. Get it together apple.

      Hi @Stevie F Beats!
      When you're in the "Media" tab in iMovie, you should have all of your events on the left located under the respective Library. When an Event is created, it's given the name of the date of when it was created.
      To rename it, click once to select it, then pause and then click again. This will highlight the text and allow you to rename it to something that makes sense other than the date.
