    Brilliant thanks so much for this comprehensive video. I am still working through it and until now haven't been using iMovie correctly at all. For projects I have been dragging video clips from the desktop and into the timeline! Not using the browser. Now I have many projects done this way! Not sure how I am going to organise it all yet but I know your videos are going to help! I definitely need more libraries although the events are tricky because my videos are project based, not always time based. thanks again.

    I just watched this again and picked up even more things I missed the first time. I've been playing with iMovie for a couple of years but not seriously. Now I'm trying to make videos for UA-cam and this will be a great help. As far as titles, I prefer to use Keynote to make my own and animate them into movies and use the picture in picture feature, You have pointed out many features in this video that I did not know about in iMovie. Thank you so much.

    Very informative video thank you! The idea of editing your clips before you put them in a project is a great one. However I’m not sure this will work for me. My videos are coming off of DVDs saved from even older formats, each clip is 45 to 50 minutes. I discovered you can’t split the clip before it’s in a project. Any ideas?

  • @Jack15270

    Great video, very good explanations. I am new to iMovie and learned a lot, thank you. I liked how you demonstrated the various elements and your ideas to save time. You did not mention that when emailing the large file, that an option on the Mac appears for a link to air drop from iCloud. Is the resolution then minimal? Not sure if the high quality video would sit in iCloud or whether it is at a much lower resolution. I want to show the videos on my 4K 65" TV.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому

      Hi @Jack15270!
      You're correct, I did not talk much on emailing the video file because honestly I think that option in iMovie is useless for the majority of projects.
      If you have a 4K video project, first off you won't be able to even email it. Also it will most likely give you a warning saying that the email will fail as it may be over 10MB in size. So I personally don't recommend that option at all.
      Using AirDrop will only share to devices in close proximity. It's designed to copy the file from one Apple device to another.
      AirPlay however allows you to stream the video to another device. So if you have an Apple TV or your TV is AirPlay compatible, this would be the best option. If you don't have an AppleTV, I would highly recommend one. They're great!
      The other option to share to others is either iCloud Photo Shared Albums or iCloud Drive.
      Now with Shared Albums, it has a limitation of a 15 minute duration and it will scale the quality down. For iCloud Drive you can share the full quality and up to 50GB file with someone.
      I have a couple videos that discuss Shared Albums and iCloud Drive that I'll link below for reference:

    Great video, one thing I want to mention for all the newBs in editing (like myself), DO NOT edit a video imported directly from Camera or SD-Card, because after you are all done, iMovie will not let you export it and you would lose all the efforts you put on the project and you gotta do it all over again!! Make sure to move those videos to your disk and then import them and edit them.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      Great advice and I completely agree @Alaa Semaka!
      Always import the footage from the card!
      Another tip, always let your camera/camcorder format the SD-Card or whatever card you have in it first and not the computer.

    I’ve been watching a lot of videos for beginners, this one was pretty extensive and well done. I do have one question that no one has addressed. You kind of gave me some clues to piece together, but did not state it directly. You mentioned how the resolution of your movie is determined by the resolution of the first video you import, which is kind of important! And when you were showing the export steps it showed suggested resolutions for popular platforms like UA-cam and Facebook. Which I think answers my question of what resolution should I use for still (not video) artwork of my own that I want to use? If I make my own background image is 1920x1080 going to be large enough for every kind of output? Should I start larger or does it not even matter if the export function is going to interpolate to whatever size I pick? I want to make my own backgrounds and import my own still art (as png files with transparent background?), so how big should I go? And is the resolution of my movie determined by the first still *background image* I import?
    Also, no one else has mentioned making multiple libraries as an organizational technique. So that was interesting. In fact, only one other video warned about how everything you import gets copied into that file, making potentially huge, and suggesting that we might want to put everything onto a large external drive. Also kind of important.
    Okay, one more question that no one has brought up. I’ve seen videos made from old TV shows with a different aspect ratio. So… it appears that we are not locked into only one aspect ratio. So is it cool for me to use my own preference of aspect ratio, or is that likely to cause problems in compatibility down the road?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      Great questions @Guy Palm!
      First off for your photos and still images for backgrounds. Yes, I would recommend to match your resolution to be what your output would be. That way it won't scale and you won't have any surprises. You could make it step further and increase the resolution of your images, for example if your output is going to be 1920x1080, double that to 3840x2160 so that it's nice and crisp.
      As far as organizing with libraries and such, I don't think there's right or wrong way. I personally like to break it up so it's less to see and works well for me.
      iMovie will limit you to the aspect and resolution of whatever video clip is first there. Unlike Final Cut Pro, you can't choose a custom aspect ratio or resolution.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

      Hi @SOVcreates!
      So while in iMovie, if you go to the top Menu bar and choose File > Open Library > New
      This will allow you to create a new library independent from the others that you can store locally on your Mac or an external hard drive.

    I'm new, so maybe you've answered this question. I have a very specific request for iMovie - using it on the ipad was very straightforward and easy, and I could view my icloud photos, filter only videos, and view by date to pull specific days' worth of videos. I'm using a MacBook now and still wanting to create very simple import-clips-in-and-trim-and save videos. I CAN'T figure out how to view my icloud photos, filter to only video and by date, so I can import videos from a specific day. Thank you for any guidance!

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @Oscar M!
      When you're in iMovie on the Mac and you want to access you Photos Library it should show up on the far left hand side as "Photos" under the category of "LIBRARIES". I will say that my experience with it has always been a little frustrating with the speed and accuracy of finding what you want, especially if you have a lot of photos/videos in there.
      Also note that if you are using iCloud Photos on your Mac and have it set to "Optimize Photo Storage", it won't have the full resolution copy of your photos or videos in Apple Photos all the time which also makes it for challenging for iMovie to see it correctly.
      My best workaround is to just open up Apple Photos, select all the items you want and drag to a folder on the desktop or wherever. (note that when you drag out of Apple Photos, it's always making a copy). Then after that I import that content into iMovie which also copies it into the iMovie library which I can then delete the folder on my desktop or wherever.
      It seems like more steps, but it's not too bad with the amount of time it saves you trying to hunt for photos within iMovie.
      Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

      @@Learnwithjoel This is a great response to a great question. I made the upgrade from iPad Pro, M1, to MacBook Pro M1,16g, 1Tb. The iPad shares the iPhoto Libraries making it easy to use the same content in different applications. While Smart Albums can help solve the original question about finding content, only 6 of 20 photo/video albums randomly showed up in iMovie on the MacBook Pro. I called Apple Support and they confirmed iCloud settings were correct and replicated the problem. After 90 minutes we identified a possible bug that prevents iMovie from picking up all the photos in iPhoto or in the photo/video (and Smart) Albums. The big issue is by dragging photos onto the desktop and then again into iMovie you can possibly have 3 files of the same picture thereby depleting a lot of your storage capacity. So... is it possible to save the library files on a removable drive (or SD Card in the card slot) and then use that in real time for editing with iMovie? How would you point to where the library files can be located (did not see the option in settings)? Thanks for the great tutorial!

    Appreciated your iMovie overview. I’ve just started my first project. I’m using it to create a video to assist a sale of my used off road vehicle. The only thing that I had hoped that you would touch on is creating the thumbnail for my UA-cam video. The one that is automatically selected is not useful for a sale. I will search your video library later.

      Great question @Motorhoming Fun.
      I did some testing and with a 5K and 8K video file into iMovie. The highest resolution it will let you export is 4K. You can import and edit high quality, but not export.
      If you do a lot of video editing, I would highly consider Final Cut Pro. It's amazing!

    I know this might be a weird question, but can you tell me which mouse you were using when recording this? It has the best clicking sound ever.

      LOL...no worries at all @wie ebenholz!
      So actually it's just the trackpad on the Mac. I often don't use a Mouse as I prefer the trackpad. This current laptop in this video was a 2016 15" MacBook Pro.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

      Hi @celso c!
      iMovie for all Apple products is 100% free, but also keep in mind it's only available on Apple Devices. Not Windows!
      You would find it in the Mac App Store:

    I wanted to buy this I Movie software and download it to my computer. How can I buy this? Will this be a one time purchase or subscription. I went online and started purchasing this but it shows : "Recurring Payment Term" Initial payment $39.99 and $9.99 charged monthly. When I read this and took a pause. I don't like to submit myself on subscription. Thanks

    Can’t find a solution to this problem.

      It may mean your images aren't actually saved in the library. I had to start a new library on an external drive for every new project. Since then I haven't had the problem.

      Hey @The Vineyard Farmhouse!
      There could be a variety of reasons that you might get an error such as "Share Failed"
      A few questions and things to look at:
      1. Where are you sharing to? A local folder like Movies, Desktop or Documents? Or are you trying to share to a service like UA-cam or Facebook or something?
      2. If you are sharing to a local folder, do you have enough hard drive space?
      3. Did you get any other information related to the error? Or did it just say "Share Failed"?
      4. What type of media are you using? Files that you directly imported into iMovie, or are you using content dragged in from your Photos Library?
      I'd love to help, but for sure need a little more information!

      Hey @Anne McCue! Good point if the files aren't saved in the library.
      I am curious though...you shouldn't have to create a new library for every new project.
      Thanks for helping out!

      @@Learnwithjoel hi, I mean taking a video and moving for a close up of a face and then returning to its normal position. Whenever I see it in a video it seems to happen where there might’ve been a splice in the film. So, I don’t think it’s actually moving the camera closer and back again.

    • @Learnwithjoel

      @@hauntednightmaremedia Ah yes! Usually that's referred to as the "Ken Burns" effect. When you have a video selected and you go to the top right in the view, you need to select the "Crop" tool and there are 3 different Styles: Fit, Crop to Fill and Ken Burns.
      Ken Burns gives you two boxes overlayed on the video. A start and a stop. You can adjust the size and placement of both, and that creating the digital zoom effect for the close ups.
      Hope that helps and makes sense!
