My uncle retired several years ago and bought a farm in an Amish community near Chambersburg, PA. He was a gruff, hard drinking, swearing (every other word), non-religious construction contractor from NYC. He was single but frequently brought in various women from the NY area for weekend trysts. So he was everything the Amish were not, but they embraced and accepted into their community. After a heart attack, they took care of him like he was family. They brought him breakfast, lunch and dinner, washed his clothes and cleaned his house, and everything required on a small farm, and did it all as if he were an Amish family member. Oh, and one other thing, these people were by average American standards quite affluent, even wealthy. They have my respect and admiration -the Amish I met were wonderful people in every respect.
What a great story! I'm a former NYer that moved out to Berks County, PA and Mennonites lived down the block, and throughout the area, and we were very close to Lancaster so I would see Amish people around, and buy there food at farmers markets and use their services. They were always very polite and smart too, and we admire their close knit communities.
The Amish are saviors in my eyes..I had a little girl adopted by a Amish family and they saved both of are lives. Thank you to the Amish community and the family of Layla Miller 🥰 your the bliss in my life
This area isn't really urban its a very touristy area and this is the time of year when all the snow birds are down. If he was around in July there would be a lot less people and cars.
I grew up in Missouri. They're very most conservative and closed except they do have general stores we like for it's farm fresh home made goods. I used to see them in the early 2000's always packing the grey hound buses before and after Christmas and Easter where we needed more buses so lots of people were left sitting and waiting many many hours. I guess it was about year 2000 when they started going Greyhound between states probably from Kansas to Pennsylvania. No talking was possible despite spending time around them and no English speaking was ever heard on these bus trips I regularly went on for a number of years.
Here in northern New York their are thousands of Amish and they are nothing like this. Very few are outgoing like these people. They certainly won’t ride bikes with rubber tires and none of them live in villages or cities.
Their vibes reminds me of tent camping in campgrounds and how you'd hang out and make friends/community with the neighbours, walk everywhere, always be outside...the simple blessings.
America is so incredibly diverse - when people say "Americans believe this" or "wow that's so American" it's honestly usually a silly generalization. Every state, town and city have their own unique cultures and sub-cultures, we are united in the sense the we believe in freedom but we are also extremely different.
That's because many other countries are still highly jealous of Americans. They claim to hate American policies and governments and American views and so on, but they love American movies, music, clothing styles, locations, accomplishments etc. Lots of hypocrites overseas. However, Europe has some better qualities than America at times, but the world is a mixed bag. Every country has its good and bad aspects.
@Hairy Watermelon Nothing like it is today where we have way more immigrants then back then. Also back then they were happy to come and adapt to our Western/Anglo ideals but now they are all entitled and feel the majority should adapt to the minority.

What's impressive about their community? The fact that they only do business with each other, yet take up the resources of everyone else? T Real Amish people don't take medicine or take their kids to school. Oh and they do t pay taxes, just mooch off the rest of society without contributing to it.
But unfortunately they are not. There are many children with gene defects among the Amish and also the Hutterer because of marrying too close relatives over generations. The World: Panic, fear, and fighting. The Amish: “It’s all good brother, we are here for each other and God will take care of us.” That’s true freedom in my opinion.

Had no idea there are Amish in Florida. Love their energy!
They're snowbirds. And they're shitty drivers too. They're just more annoying tourists that clog up our streets and beaches here in Florida.
There are even Amish in the Amazon, so it doesn't surprise me jajajajajajaja
"Sue, I'm in TV!" so cute, so sweet, I laughed out loud, love that guy!
Lmao that was wholesome
Most Amish people live in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The overwhelming majority of them are really chill and actually sell very high quality goods.
Same with the Amish in western NY, and indiana! very welcoming, and amazing craftspeople.
yea there is a lot in Indiana we buy crops from them becuase the corn is very good, and the watermelons are always sweet.
And they make some of the best damn candy you can eat
there’s lots of Amish out here by me in southwest Ohio , but they’re much different than the people in this video. they won’t go on camera and most speak a German-English mix. and there’s certainly no power lines going to their homes hahaha
And Wayne County Indiana, and brene Indiana I am from Wayne County and Amish people are so nice
I think they got it right when they said we can’t live in fear during these stressful times. We have to help one another . That’s so true.
And here it is a year later, with threats again of lockdowns. We can NOT live in fear! Do NOT comply!
That's cool
Thats the way we Christians should be to one another and even strangers that don’t share the same faith as us
I am from Chambersburg and we have a large Amish and Mennonite community in this area. That's wonderful to hear how your uncle was taken care of.
There should be a movie made about your uncles life!’ 💯
The Amish are saviors in my eyes..I had a little girl adopted by a Amish family and they saved both of are lives. Thank you to the Amish community and the family of Layla Miller 🥰 your the bliss in my life
What? You put your daughter for adoption
oh no :(
There are a lot of Amish farmers here in the Midwest, but I’ve never seen them in an urban area like this. Fascinating.
This area isn't really urban its a very touristy area and this is the time of year when all the snow birds are down. If he was around in July there would be a lot less people and cars.
A little different for sure. In Maryland they’re.not usually this fun
And that's the whole problem. Alot of these religions and cultures can not work together there beliefs are so different if not illegal in the US.
I like your name, Mr. _
@Polo Jack Cant stand media actually. I am good at reading people and yes while most of us remain polite and carry on I can see the anger or sadness in there eyes often. Guess it depends where you live as well.
I moved out of the city & started to make friends with the Amish in Indiana. They are good people 🥰
So refreshing to be around nice like minded people. I'm never moving back to the city.
Isn't it against their religion to make friends with outsiders?
@@briancalifornia1 not at all. Some have very little contact with the outside world. Others do.
The ones who have very little contact seem to be much more shy around the english. That does not mean you cannot become friends.

Peter, I casually found out about your channel during the last Covid lockdown. My main intent was trying to educate myself about all the different cultures (something I've got since I was born) rather than watching meaningless videos out of boredom. Here we go. You've got one of the most intelligent, instructive, and impartial channels of all UA-cam and beyond. This is what I call an intelligent use of social media. Your glimpses of all layers and communities of the US are a great service to us all. When you, as a US citizen, admitted to having a kind of distorted/misconceived idea of the Amish community, made me feel less guilty, cause I had exactly the same, except that I'm a born and bred Italian woman. So, thanks again for your videos. Keep doing your job the way you do.
I'm German and couldn't agree more. Nice, unbiased and respectful guy doing really great stuff!
