10 bananas is healthy?! (Reacting to when I ate raw)

  • Reacting to one of my old videos from 2010 called "That's too much fruit on a low fat raw vegan diet?" Obviously this was when I was still eating a "fully raw" diet (low fat, high carb, lots of fruit 80/10/10 style). Sometimes it's good to see how far we've come. Sometimes it's terribly awkward and embarrassing and WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY HAIR?!

    • @UnnaturalVegan
      @UnnaturalVegan  7 років тому +366

Two things, perhaps. First, raw food never quite became part of my identity, although it was a big part of my life and I did make money promoting it. I always considered myself primarily a skeptic/rational person and eventually I learned raw didn't fit with that. It was either stay raw and essentially follow a religion, or give it up (same thing happened with objectivism/libertarianism). Second, I never idolized Graham or any of the other cult leaders. This made it not only easier to them for what they were, but more importantly, to accept it.

Amen to the always feeling cold thing!!! I was eating Raw Til 4 with probably less than 5% fat (no overt fats such as nuts, seeds, etc. even oatmeal had too much fat for me. 🙄) during the summer last year and was stick thin, so I didn't think the heat not bothering me was anything serious. Then, as soon as it hit 60 degrees, I was shivering 24/7 and no amount of blankets could keep me warm. My hands were always chapped, cracked, and bleeding. I had two jobs during the fall and winter, and would eat my "lunch" (two large carrots) in my car between jobs, shivering so bad I thought I was going to pass out.
I finally started eating more starches and fats earlier this year, and a hell of a lot more protein. I hardly even eat fruit anymore and I feel so much better. Eat your fats!!!!!!!!!

I never had any intention of being 'raw' or 'low fat' but somehow the obsessive rhetoric and focus on food was appealing to me. Looking back I find this video genre kind of appalling and stupid (not to criticize you personally) - seems to have a narrow audience (i.e. people with eating disorders).

a great benefit to veganism is that you can eat a lot more than non-vegans. But as raw vegan you have to eat allll the timeeee. Like the example with cows: yes, they eat A LOT of grass but they eat all day too. Who wants to do nothing all day but eat

I totally agree with your statement about the sustainability or rather unsustainably of the raw and fruit diet. This is something that the raw people refuse to understand. Fruit is the most wasteful of all the plant foods per calorie. You can't run civilization off of bananas and organic kale. Grains and other staples are grown for a reason.

A raw vegan diet is much too expensive because one would have to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables to be full also one has to go to the supermarket quite often and carry a lot and heavy stuff. We are a family of four (soon 5) and getting everyone full just with fruit and vegetables would be far too expensive, we make a green smoothie everyday and eat also a lot of fruit and vegetables but it's easier and cheaper to have a satisfying meal with starches (potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, pasta) and for example legumes once a day

brightsausage I think it is just self honesty. When I look at my graduation photo from law school from seven years ago, I looked ten years older than I do now and I say this frequently. I was Vegan, but ate so much cooked and junk Vegan food to nurse the stress of law school while working full time. I cringe looking at those old photos of myself and I do not think this is self hate. It is like looking at our high school hairstyles and thinking, "What was I thinking".

I'm so glad you addressed the food waste issue! I feel like everyone typically just points out the easy to spot lack of nutritional backing for raw vegan but never the food waste. As far as I'm concerned it's someone's business if they want to create nutritional deficiencies for themselves but when they're using excessive resources daily that everyone needs (while plenty of it often goes bad before they even eat it) ? Ehhhh :(

I’m no vegan but I’ve been eating Kale since the late 90’s and I JUST started to sauté it. Fresh garlic , EVOO, herbs etc, sauté and then drop in the kale, turn off the heat and let it soften a little before you toss. Also can toss with a little hummus dressing. BTW, why can’t raw people eat garlic? That’s a sin!

    Thoughts as I'm watching this:
I don't think the layerd hair is bad, but I do like your hair better now.
    Love your cat.
Can you eat spinach or snow peas?
The granola bars still look yummy.
I probably couldn't eat more than 1 banana. Maybe in a smoothie I could eat more.
Low fat doesn't really mean much if you're doing high sugar.
My problem with knowing I'm full (i.e. not hungry anymore) is that I eat too fast. If I slow down my eating I recognize that point much easier. But, it's not easy for me to eat slowly. I still have to watch the clock to slow down my eating.
Iodized salt ftw! Why is seaweed discouraged?
I don't think I could live without tea. I'm a tea drinker, not a coffee drinker.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Swayze ( +Unnatural Vegan ),
I have a question on the sciece and ethics of different diets that I was recently wondering about, and I'm curious, if you have any opinion and/or data on that:
Shifting from a mixed diet to a plant based diet, you need to look into food items, that maybe aren't as readily available or that maybe don't grow regionally and are imported, right (f.e. cashews, to meet zinc needs and fats and stuff)?. I was wondering (again I do't have any data), if adopting a balanced vegan diet, like tthe one that you advocate for, in some areas means reducing animal suffering, but maybe increasing human suffering at the same time, mediated through the products you choose, and how and where they are produced?
Sticking with the example of cashews (it might not be the best example, but follow me here just to understand my question):
Maybe you were eating a flexitarian diet before, lots of vegetarian and vegan meals a week, some meat, some dairy, both coming, say, from an eco- or bio-label that reduces animal suffering in the raising and slaughter of the animals. Then you're switching to vegan and in order to not run into deficiency you eat lots of cashews (and say lots of other people do to, you alone doing this certainly wouldn't makethat much of a difference). Now, as far as I remember, cashews aren't produced in the most humane ways. I think they are often produced in developping world countries, their shells are highy acidic, handling them is a health threat and yet in most places no effective protection is in place for the workers (mostly women , who open the shells with bare hands). Not to talk about other working conditions such as long hours, minimal pay to make the product "affordable", etc..
I think you know hat I am getting at: What if eating more animal friendly in many instances under current realistic circumstances means producing more human suffering? That's a question I rarely hear addressed by ethical vegans and I wonder if it could be called ethical then? I wouldn't see much ethics in prioritizing the reduction of suffering for other species while simultaneously contributing to greater suffering in one's own species. And maybe there would be ways to have a flexitarian diet, that reduces animal products a great deal, reduces animal suffering a lot (especially if adopted by the majority of people), but doesn't make people resort to foodproducts that possibly increase human suffering.
This is just an idea or a theory that crossed my mind and I haven't made up my mind about it yet. It's something I thought should be concidered. I was wondering, if you have ever thought about that aspect? Do you have any info or data or reports about that? It would be great, if you could make a video about it. Thanks.

By reacting to your old videos, you show your audience the maturity and wisdom you have gained from life experience (which also gives you credibility). A lot of people may reflect on their errors in life. But rarely would they admit them in a public forum to educate and benefit others, while allowing the comments to remain enabled subjecting themselves to potential ridicule. This takes humility and courage, and I hope people appreciate these videos and can learn from them. Thank you.
