Love this video. I passed my road test recently and watching this video reminds me so much of my instructors. I have a couple coworkers motivated to go for the CDL and I'm definitely sharing this video with them.👏
My instructor would lose his shit if I skipped gears. Started at 3 when I thought I was in 1 and he flipped his shit. The vehicle was driving with no issues and him yelling made me panic shift to one and grind gears.
You only need the clutch to take off!!! If you use the clutch for every gear you will need a knee replacement by the time you put a million miles on it.
This video is for beginner drivers. Once a driver graduates and gets some proper seat time then I am sure they will learn to float. However at the start the schools are trying to get students to be able to shift the trucks without grinding the gears down to dust. That is why they teach double clutching, at least that is why it was taught when I went through driver school 10 years ago.
I’m 6 hours in and just starting to get it down, I drive a manual truck (Toyota Tacoma) every day, and have been driving stick all my life, and I think it’s easier to learn a semi non synchronized transmission if you have never driven a manual before. Because it’s completely different. The only thing the same is getting moving from a stop. Actually that’s even easier in a semi than a regular car because they are nearly impossible to stall, but everything else is different. It took me 5 minutes when I was 17 to learn to drive a manual. I guess what I’m saying is knowing how to drive stick doesn’t help much when learning to drive a manual semi.
@@josephc3249 found the problem, rpm gauge helps, 1k then 1500 to downshift, upshift isn't a problem sometimes to slow to clutch to 5th, just have to develop more speed double clutching, looking forward to learning Floating gears after passing my test.
How to act if you have to come to a quick stop? Let's say a light turns red and you're going full speed? Do you downshift quickly or do you depress clutch and break coming to a full stop?
Also if you have to turn quickly. Lets say you just remembered that a turn is coming up and you dont have time for a gradual slowing down. How to slow down quickly and how to know which gear to be in for the turn?
Its going to be a judgment call each time, but if you don't have time to downshift, then don't. Assuming you have a Jake brake, you would have that to help slow you, so you wouldn't push the clutch in right away. You would only hit the brakes at first, until you've decelerated to where your engine is down close to idle speed, then push the clutch so you don't stall the engine. Regarding making a turn, if you are coasting through the turn out of gear (because your right foot is busy slowing you down) then by the time you no longer need to be pressing the brake you are probably around the lower end of 6th gear. When I am in such a situation I find that I can usually just slide it into 6th at that point.
Couple active Navy guys on a remote island, had to learn a 10 speed because it was all we had. looked up your video and we got in the truck. 45 minutes later we were both shifting through gears smoothly.rrally appreciate how in depth the video was.
Just came by to say thanks, without this video I wouldn’t have made it through my CDL test- which I passed today! 😁😁😁 Parker Professional Driving School, Raynham, Massachusetts 🚛🔥😁
This video is VERY well done! As an experienced driver, I'd recommend this video to new drivers!! It's all so easy to me now, but I can still picture myself when this was all new to me. Now I can laugh and smile looking back. Being new to trucking, and believing that you HAVE to be rough with the truck to make it work... and then discovering that it's much easier to shift with 2 fingers that your whole hand choking the hell out of the shifter :-)
This is truly gold. No one comes closer to this. By far the best video on the subject matter. Well done. There should be 25 million views and zero dislikes. Appreciate it.
Great video. I'm getting back in the saddle after 7 years and just wanted a tune up/refresher. Learned a few things I forgot/didn't know. Down shifting has always been my weak spot and this really helps understand what up..
Life Saver!.!. Took a 30 year break in driving to become a cop; 2 speed rear ends were the norm back then. After retirement I went back to driving. Everything is automatic for the first 3 years. Then yesterday they sent me 200 miles to retrieve a tractor, because, “You can drive the old stuff with a clutch.” Hmm, custom knob with no shift pattern and a badly leaking top radiator hose. While facility mechanics got the replacement part, I learned the transmission was an Eaton and probably a 10 speed. After starting to watch a number of terrible amateur videos I found yours! Hallelujah! Made it back through rush hour traffic. Not a pretty sight and the driver’s mirror fell apart at one point (ALWAYS carry Gorilla Tape and flex ties). I did have to pull to the shoulder and start over 3 times, so I’m avidly rewatching the downshift and missed shift segments over and over today.
Gerardo Martinez much easier to drive. Not messing with the clutch constantly, only need it to start and stop. When I learned to drive truck, I never learned how to double-clutch. Only float
A lot of companies won’t hire you if you can’t double clutch and if you can’t drive floating and double clutching you can hardly say you can drive a stick
@@normanjohnston5383 that's just it, I'm not one looking to be hired, I'm the one doing the hiring & firing 🤔 ! Use that clutch other than taking off and your road test is over ! @Al Munnerlyn Get over yourself tough guy... Realize what this video is for. It's for students who need to learn how to double clutch to pass a driving test. @@jharnish33 cut the b s these nonsense schools have trucking companies going to automatic transmissions 🤔 ! But to be honest we prefer the stick when the driver knows how to operate it ! @@abc123lov7… I know from listening to the instructors explain it in class. The whole double clutching & down shifting by clutching tho neutral then rev the accelerator then clutching to gear sounds like madness. Who would want to drive like that all day everyday? But thanks, we’ll see when I finally get my first day of drive time.
My first ride was horrible. I didn't even make it out of the first 5 gears. I found this video. On my 2nd ride I was literally on the highway in 10th gear going 70mph. It was an incredible feeling. I just need to now find videos on how to slow down and prepare for setting up turns and getting into the turning gear. Big thumbs up.
I learned a lot more from this video in 15 minutes than I learned from my instructor yelling at me today.Your not listening! Your not listing! Some people are just not cut out to be instructors My sincere thanks to the producer of this video.👍
You have a choice. I chose to learn on a manual in school so I will test on a manual. You can choose to learn on an automatic and you will test on an automatic however you will have a restriction on your license that will not allow you to drive a manual. 95% of the carriers now have automatic trucks. Some of the smaller "mom and pop" carriers still have manual transmission. I test on October 29th. Wish me luck!🙄
Yes! This is an endemic response from poor teachers. "LISTENiING" involves several functions in learning, not just ears. Therefore the proper instruction before, during and after a skill is crucial in locating the bodies total ability to "listen" and respond accurately. This takes patience, timing and practice. Often times poor instructors will not have prepared a student in advance of the maneuver and then when the student is panicking during a skill, they become frustrated and blame the student for not listening. ( This is not to say there are not students who don't listen, or are poor students, but I am speaking to those who are trying in earnest to learn and trying to listen but are receiving confusing or incomplete instruction). Then the student internalizes this and probably becomes further frustrated themselves. While there are alot of decent, accomplished people teaching, not everyone is being taught how to instruct. You can be a great trucker and a not so great instructor. (There are some people who are in teaching positions who are not fit to be there as well, but I am not speaking about that at the moment). So, students, learn from these wonderful videos, prepare your minds in advance and practice the shift pattern in a chair as they showed. Get muscle memory and think through the process everyday while in school for a few moments at home and have patience and focus while learning on the road. Some instructors do more harm than good. If you have one of these try to stay calm and remember your skills from these videos. (Try to look like you are listening to your instructor while focusing on what you learned from this video!) If you have a good teacher listen well to them, if you don't, learn from information like these videos as best you can.. Be safe, stay calm, and rewatch these tutorials everyday. To those having bad school experiences who are bright individuals that are trying hard to learn in a poor environment, know that it is real, you are not imagining it, there are many of these places taking advantage of the opportunity to make money. Unfortunately, many of their teachers are also abusive. But you cannot win there so keep your head down, learn any way you can and make it through that horrible experience and get your CDL hopefully. Then try to learn the best you can with a potentially terrible trainer on your first job! Someone should do some investigative journaling on these scam schools. Thanks to cdlcollege for their integrity, clarity and professionalism. They are saving people's lives literally.
Gerardo! Thank you, brother. I also answer all of the UA-cam comments. Your participation level during the Pre-Trip is awesome. Thank you for that as well. See you next time...
I've just started training and had my first ride this past weekend. WOW! I've been driving a stick shift since I was 10 years old. Now that I'm 58, that clutch to the floor and shift when you're ready mentality is so engrained in my brain, that I found my first ride very frustrating. I know and understand what to do, but my brain, feet, and right hand just keep wanting to revert to a passenger vehicle. Any additional tips you can pass along for helping to break that grip and transitioning into smooth non-synchronized double clutch shifting? Your videos are very helpful and have been a great learning tool.
I SECOND " Best video on the subject EVER !!!" Long story short, I just started truck driving school 2 weeks ago. Naturally not knowing a thing about how to shift a semi truck. The school instructor's instructions were " 1500rpm cluth up 1000 clutch down. " I had no issues clutching up it was the clutching down where my issues were at. I would miss the window of opportunity to down shift to a lower gear. After attempting to put the transmission in to gear the instructor would just say reve it up and he would throw into any old gear and ask what gear are you in. Keep in mind I'm behind the wheel the truck is moving forward and I confused as @#$%. My answer was " I don't know why don't you tell me since you threw it into gear " this happened for the first 3 days of behind the wheel training. And one day I was on UA-cam looking for tutorials on shift and what do you know, your video was the first one to come up. I watched it it was well explained and I took what I saw and used it the very next day. Especially the math part of the video. Even though I missed the window off opportunity to down shift I had the math part dowm "1+5=6 ( 6th gear ). So on and so forth, the instructor asked what I did over night to improve my skill. I answered I took a math class and left it at that. I shared this video with all of the students attending that day and urged them to share it with any new student walking into the yard. THANK YOU 😊
I just want to say that I've never shifted a manual trans in my life. I started CDL school this past Monday, and our first day on the pad was yesterday. Within an hour, I was upshifting from 3rd to 6th and downshifting from 6th to 3rd without any grinds or missed shifts, and it's all thanks to this video and my instructor's patience. I'm at a great school with 1:1 student to instructor ratio. Great guys all around, and small class size. Still have another 4 weeks to go, but I'm very pleased. Shifting was my worst fear, even moreso than backing or pre-trip, and this video put my mind at ease on day 1. Thanks!
Very cool that you found a patient instructor! Think about this: if your instructor was impatient, it would manifest itself as EMOTION. Most students are intimidated by the size of these trucks. Intimidation emanates from emotion. So, if the student and instructor are both in an emotional state of mind, the learning process breaks down because it is largely logic-dependent. The fact that your instructor remained calm greatly assisted you in learning what you needed to learn. You're fortunate. There are a lot of instructors who have no patience and end up hindering the learning process because they are, essentially, selfish. They suck. We truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, Jason. If you need help with backing maneuvers, we have a UA-cam playlist you may be interested in: ua-cam.com/video/X7iVz2vbogM/v-deo.html Good luck with the rest of your training, brother!
He truly is a great instructor. He finds ways to make you laugh to ease the tension and nerves of getting behind the wheel of a semi. He encourages mistakes because, as he puts it, "you can only learn how to fix something if you mess it up". He also said he's not an instructor for the money. He simply enjoys the looks on students' faces when "they finally realize they can drive a truck". Definitely lucked out on this one.
I've only driven a manual one time, it was in my CDL training. I followed most of the video but I don't understand the brake pedal and "10-11" on the screen without pressing the clutch. I thought we weren't supposed to touch the brake unless we pressed the clutch first.
The easiest way to drive a 10 speed is to float the gears. I drove for 15 years (got my license through Yellow Freight) and I don't know anyone who has ever double clutched. That's what the Eaton Fuller was designed for, to prevent less wear and tear on the clutch. That's why it's called a clutch brake.
Sorry to read that, Yousef. Study this video. Practice double clutching at home sitting in a chair. Push the clutch and move the shifter at the same time, brother.
Thank. You. Saving me anxiety before shoveling over $3000 for a truck driving "school", that probably wouldn't explain shifting this clearly to a newbie like me. Thank you!
Great refresher video if you have not been driving trucks for a while. One suggestion. Maybe you already have it, but if this video specified a 5 minute section on shifting before turning, it would be great. Students need to know how soon to start to plan the slow down before a turn, to avoid the easier neutral slow down over gear slow down and that when a non-stopping turn is made, you should not be any higher than 4th gear when making the turn.
I have heard of double clutching but never understood it. When you said “clutch to neutral, clutch to gear” I understood. The more difficult part will probably be rev matching.
"it is a set of gears topped with a second set of gears" Me: oh looks simple. I watch some more. "Double clutching..." "Fully depressing clutch" Me: wth is happening
Roy Glen Reyes I float my gears, (Don’t use clutch). I only use clutch for starting the all shifts are in float mode, even in traffic. Much smoother and you save wear and tear doing it right. 670,000 miles and no trans problems!
I am starting a new job with a good company. I told them I have not driven in 3 years and am a little rusty with shifting. I drove an Automatic for 2 years. The company is bringing an automatic for me; I did not ask them to. Now after this video I am wish they didn't. All the things I was missing came together. This video rocks!

My instructor would lose his shit if I skipped gears. Started at 3 when I thought I was in 1 and he flipped his shit. The vehicle was driving with no issues and him yelling made me panic shift to one and grind gears.
That’s a horrible instructor
Great video. I’m about to go to CDL school next Monday. I will train on a 10th speed. Wish me luck from Imperial Beach CA.
How did u do
You only need the clutch to take off!!!
Lol
Great video. I think you just helped me pass the company road test and get hired!
Congratulations!
Great video! Some people are great drivers and horrible instructors. Those drivers should train with you before instructing anyone else!
I'd like to say this was helpful information, but it only serves to make me more apprehensive.
getting ready to start cdl school watching these videos because i dont know how to drive a manual
Did the video help?
Having a hard time finding the softwall, nervous probably gripping to tight on the shifter, I'll try to lighten up today and see how it goes.
Same, I'm having a lot of trouble shifting from 6th to 7th
Parker Professional Driving School, Raynham, Massachusetts 🚛🔥😁
This video is VERY well done! As an experienced driver, I'd recommend this video to new drivers!! It's all so easy to me now, but I can still picture myself when this was all new to me. Now I can laugh and smile looking back. Being new to trucking, and believing that you HAVE to be rough with the truck to make it work... and then discovering that it's much easier to shift with 2 fingers that your whole hand choking the hell out of the shifter :-)
This is truly gold. No one comes closer to this. By far the best video on the subject matter. Well done. There should be 25 million views and zero dislikes. Appreciate it.
Very kind of you, Tummun. Glad to assist with your training.
I did have to pull to the shoulder and start over 3 times, so I’m avidly rewatching the downshift and missed shift segments over and over today.
i want to know why some people dont use the clutch
Because they don't have to. They've figured out how to shift without the clutch. In stop-and-go traffic, it saves their left leg.
Gerardo Martinez much easier to drive. Not messing with the clutch constantly, only need it to start and stop.
When I learned to drive truck, I never learned how to double-clutch. Only float
Gerardo Martinez you'll understand once your driving for a few months
Clutch clutch my ass, a clutch is needed when taking off that's it 🤨!
Most schools will fail you if you don't use it thats my problem I'm used to floating so I'm more than like gonna fail when I do my road test
Don't try to act like you know when you don't 🤔 ! Being hard headed won't keep you a job, but it will keep you unemployed take it from a man that can shift any transmission/ or duplex/triplex combination with no scrapping, just like butter. Be a learner instead of a talker because it may enable you to go a little further !
@Al Munnerlyn Get over yourself tough guy... Realize what this video is for. It's for students who need to learn how to double clutch to pass a driving test. Besides I would rather have students learn the double clutch techniques before they learn how to float...little clutch wear is better than a broken trans.
@@jharnish33 cut the b s these nonsense schools have trucking companies going to automatic transmissions 🤔 ! But to be honest we prefer the stick when the driver knows how to operate it ! I've got a family member that was a driving instructor for 8 years and says he wanted a change so I hired him assuming all was good. Well I made a mistake by assuming he could drive well 🤔 so I jumped in the truck with him and discovered he couldn't shift 🤨 ! I had to let him go because he couldn't get the hang in a day or two. Just imagine how you look at a shooting range shooting but not even coming close to the target and won't take the advice from the experts 🤔 because your mouth makes you look the same way 😶. My family has owned trucks and stores since I was a kid. I been able to drive a tractor trailer since 14 and bought my 1st truck at 24-25 so I didn't just come on the block. Driving schools teach just enough to get the license no matter what kinda vehicle we're talking about 🤔 but the true teachings come from 20,30,and 40 year vets 🤫 !
That double clutching to down shift is sooo hard. I’ve never driven a manual vehicle before. And I’m at a CDL school now. And I’m terrified
Don’t be terrified just take your time and watch the video when your not doing anything practice you’ll get it
@@j.monae216… Thsnk you so much. I truly appreciate your kind words. And I will.
Hey bro, if you never done it how you know it's hard? Lol, don't freak yourself out about it... You got this!

Thank you, this video was Very Helpful.
This is sooo confusing but I know with repetition I’ll become a pro some day😢
I’m getting ready to go to driving school and this video was very helpful, thanks.
Some people are just not cut out to be instructors
My sincere thanks to the producer of this video.👍
Do you have to pass for the driving test with a Manual transmission

Thanks CDL college ,instructor's hats off to you all ,I will be testing soon you have been a blessing ,👍
I know my in- cab and pre- trip. This video is helping my learn to drive 10 speed Manuel while double clutching
Double clutching? What is this, 1962? 😂😂
Just float or your left leg will go numb
I just float the gears way better
I feel like I can't get it man it's so annoying but I'm not giving up
Takes a lot of practice , it was easier for me to catch on because I already knew how to drive stick shift on a regular car
Keep it up. You will get it.
Yeah it a little harder if you don't know how to drive a stick in the car. I'm learning all that now plus this we got a 6 speed truck.
This video is amazing. I'm learning to drive an older Mack 8-speed LL dump truck and I wish I saw this sooner. Amazing!
It looks way more difficult than it is learn to float jus look for the sweet spot the truck will tell you when to shift
The best video I've seen so far, very clear and informative...learned a lot abt changing gears and rpm synchronization! Thanks
Wish me luck😢😢
Good luck my friend
You got this!

Your helping me more than my instructors lol !
If you need help with backing maneuvers, we have a UA-cam playlist you may be interested in: ua-cam.com/video/X7iVz2vbogM/v-deo.html
Good luck with the rest of your training, brother!
Nice dog, too. If you're going to drive regional or OTR, find a company with a pet policy. You can take your dog with you on the road.
Found a great company to go to after school that allows larger dogs. Appreciate the help!
Jason Clemons Good job. Practice, practice, practice.Companies will not allow new drivers to float gears during test.Keep that in mind. Good luck.
This is probably the best shifting video ever!!! Thank you so much!!
💯 %.
Just accepted a new job today and found out my truck is a manual 😭
Without this video I would not be where I’m at now thanks 🙏🏾
I've only driven a manual one time, it was in my CDL training. I followed most of the video but I don't understand the brake pedal and "10-11" on the screen without pressing the clutch. I thought we weren't supposed to touch the brake unless we pressed the clutch first.
Wow. I’m struggling at my CDL school. This is explained so well. Impressive and thank you.
Same here. I messed up miserably today at school on a road drive. Shifting was a grind and find today for me. I was pretty upset about it.
And after all that…. I got my Illinois CDL on the 1st go around through the Princeton office of SOS DMV. A truly excellent staff there.
When youre bored so you just learn how to drive a 10 speed
Exnotly! Thank you for the attempt.
J Auerglass Most trucking companies now have 10 speeds or higher.
Cool! Students are required to double clutch during the CDL Skills Test. Thanks for watching.
Thanks to this video I’m finally ready for my test
Oh yeah I pass my test 11/3/2019 still can’t believe it
I took the exam twice and failed, but now I will work with your advice in order to succeed
Sorry to read that, Yousef. Study this video. Practice double clutching at home sitting in a chair. Push the clutch and move the shifter at the same time, brother.
CDL College, LLC Thank you so much
Thank.
😂Blew my hip out floating gears
Not bad.. Very different from a car. I have some habits to break
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have heard of double clutching but never understood it. When you said “clutch to neutral, clutch to gear” I understood. The more difficult part will probably be rev matching.
"it is a set of gears topped with a second set of gears"
Me: oh looks simple. I watch some more.
"Double clutching..." "Fully depressing clutch"
Me: wth is happening
Roy Glen Reyes I float my gears, (Don’t use clutch). I only use clutch for starting the all shifts are in float mode, even in traffic. Much smoother and you save wear and tear doing it right. 670,000 miles and no trans problems!
@@aviatortrucker6198 yep floating is a good thing. Just make sure not to do it during orientation for companies. They frown on that a bit lol
