When is this Fitness Myth Going to Die?

  • Honestly, I’d be amazed if it goes away in my lifetime.
I first qualified in 2001 (yes, I’m old). I remember being taught back then, that you can’t “spot reduce,” and doing abs will not meaningfully affect body fat around the abdomen.
Yet here we are, 23 years later, and it feels like nothing has changed.
    I’ve heard coaches argue:
“Yeah, but if it gets people working out and training their core, then what’s the harm?”
    The harm is this:
What’s the main reason people struggle to exercise or stop exercising?
Time! They struggle to find the time.
But, it’s less about struggling to find the time, and more about feeling that their time is not yielding the results they think their time commitment deserves.
So, all the time these fitness influencers are blowing smoke up people’s arses, telling them to do endless sit-ups to “torch belly fat”, rather than educating their audience on what actually is going to help reduce body fat, the more people will be dipping in and out of exercises ongoing.
And let’s face it, trainers only do it for likes and follows on social media - they know full well it does sweet FA to body fat.
Well, I hope they know that. If not, then they need to maybe go and get qualified in their chosen field.
So, to any fitness professional that sees this - if you are posting ab workouts, please stop. I get it, you’re proud of the fact you have either starved yourself to have a six-pack or you’re just young and have one by default.
But maybe try to educate your audience instead of making up yet another ab crunch variation.
