  • Ankle lymphedema or ankle swelling, foot swelling, and toe swelling are some of the most complicated and stubborn areas to manage lymphedema. Lymphedema treatment varies for each person, so you may need new ideas to try to get rid of swelling. In this video, I share tips and tricks on how to reduce leg lymphedema, specifically in the ankles, feet, and toes.
*these techniques are used for those who have gone through standard lymphedema treatment, or complete decongestive therapy, and still have stubborn issues. They are not used as the first line of treatment. see videos below for standard lymphedema care

I'm 74 years old now and I started having swelling feet about a year ago for the first time in my life. I did all kinds of research about it and I found that eating a lot of salty food makes it worse, and that if I drink more water that it helps alleviate it some, and that if I take vitamins and herbs to improve circulation that they help a lot. So I've been taking 800 IU of vitamin E every day (d alpha), one capsule of Hawthorn Berry Extract, two capsules of CoQ10, one capsule of Hibiscus Extract, two capsules of Dandelion Root, 5 grams of Vitamin C powder (dissolved in water), plus a good multi-vitamin every day. Plus I've noticed that if I sit around a lot that it makes the swelling worse, so I try to keep moving as much as I can. I hope this helps someone.

Don't forget that what you eat impacts how much you swell. I got rid of all of my swelling when I gave up all processed foods, table salt, eating fresh veggies and some chicken or fish on a intermittent fasting diet. Boring yes! But I have lost 25 pounds and have normal sized ankles and legs every day. It is worth it. I am 64 and feel 20 years younger without the pain and swelling.

A dozen years ago both of my legs from the knees down swelled up huge. I finally spent 2 weeks laying on my back in bed as many hours per day as I could with my feet high up on the bedroom wall. At first I only spent time in bed with my legs prone but that didn't help. That's when I decided to get gravity on my side by putting my butt against the wall with my legs pointing straight up. It worked. I had the same problem a few years later but only in one leg. I was able to correct that just by sitting on the couch with my feet straight out onto the coffee table. Right now my right foot has been swollen for a couple weeks but it swells even worse during the night when I sleep. 2 days ago I started moving my foot in all directions, spreading my toes and holding those positions as hard as possible in every configuration for a few seconds. That activity has made a huge difference. Today my foot is almost normal size after doing that for only 2 days.

@whatadollslife - Most primary or even cardiac doctors do NOT know about lymphedema - it is a hole in their education. My cardiologist prescribed Lasix for lymphedema, which is not an appropriate treatment and did not work.
Seeking out specialized care is worth the effort. Many physical therapy practices have CERTIFIED lymphedema specialists who have the expertise to help. Also, some medical centers with strong cancer programs have lymphedema departments. For example, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC has the one I have been using.
      Best of luck!

I've had edema for a very long time and never realised what it was until over a year ago. I have swollen ankles and feet and some tightness in the legs. I came across some interesting info about mini trampolines/rebounders and purchased a really good bungee model. Believe it or not by just bouncing up and down I'm managing my edema. 1/2 an hour per day split into 2 quarter hours with stretching exercises in between for 15mins is helping a lot. I may with time try an hour 4 times a week.
Rebounding has been proven to be great for lymphatic drainage. I have noticed the difference since I took up rebounding. If you look at the benefits of rebounding it is absolutely brilliant. Good for bone density, balance, heart, circulation, oesteoporosis, arthritis and much more. NASA did a report on their astronauts who were getting oesteoporosis and found rebounding worked wonders! You can purchase bars to attach to rebounders if balance is a problem. I don't have that issue so can work without one but for those who need that extra support it is well worth getting that add on.
One last thing it is gentle on the joints and apparently exercising on the rebounder lubricates the joints. If you have physical problems it is always best to discuss with a doctor whether this form of exercise is for you. I made my own judgement call and I don't regret taking up rebounding.

I bought an adjustable bed after I broke my shoulder and had to sleep in a chair for weeks. That bed is wonderful. If I have a stuffy head, I raise the head of the bed a bit and I sleep well, if my feet and ankles swell I raise the root of the bed so my feet are above my heart as I sleep, that works well, reducing the swelling. I found exercising helps but not enough, adding the raised feet at night and within a few days, I notice my feet are back to normal. I'm 71.

I have tried stockings for deep vein thrombosis and this helps to reduce the swelling considerably but it doesn't cure the root cause, which for me is the kidneys. Just how much is it the kidney and how much due to lack of exercise or walking due to underlying causes. Thanks.

I suffer from swelling In the ankles and feet.
One day we were going to an amusement park for the day. My swelling was bad in the morning so i wore larger shoes. It was close to close time So we decided the last ride would be the giant drop. This ride takes you straight up high in a car and then drops you straight down. I'd say about 75m maybe higher.
We got on the ride and i noticed while climbing my shoes started to feel a little loose. By the time we reached the top and started dropping my shoes were nearly falling off. I really thought they would fall off. Once back on the ground my entire swelling was gone.
I always wanted to go back and try it again.
When I first started getting the swelling in my feet and ankles I went and saw a doctor complaining to him I always got it the next day after eating something like pizza, I guess salty food.
All he said was don't eat pizza anymore.

Sharon Thoms. Dear, if you are eating anything that is a carbohydrate or "starches" as our moms use to call them please stop eating them right now. Potatoes are the worst followed by anything made of wheat (like pizza or any kind of bread), rice, banana, plantains, yucca cassava. Usually it's not the salt is the carbs they need water to move in your body so you retain a lot of water to do so.

i never saw this before but i could never wrap my toes or feet like this and still be able to walk. the lymph lady i went to--at a local hospital out building-- nearly broke my back trying to smash my shoe back on over 5 layers of foam wrap. she ripped the insides out of my shoes as if she did not care she was ruining them, i could not walk and threw my already bad back out. I cried when i left her, i am over 60, the pain she put me in from her wraps made me want to jump in front of a truck-- and that is never my attitude. my knees swelled so much from her wrapping i thought they would explode and after 3 days of suffering i cut the bandages off-- that i had to buy - she said my insurance did not cover them-- i have no way of knowing this is true or not, my legs looked like triangles too. i went and bought sandles over 3 sizes too big to just fit the bandaged feet in, and nearly broke my neck just trying to walk, i do not go there anymore, and it took 2 years to find her at a hospital because here, unless you have oozing wounds no one will take you in, I am in S.E. FL. and on medicaid-- to old to work too young for medicare-- oh and she tried to make me buy some compression machine for close to $500.00 that of course i do not have, some mean guy also kept calling me about it== so suddenly she was going to see me 12 times but she cut me off for not buying the machine thing, she kept saying = dont you want to have skinny legs == so she -- dismissed me-- thank god-- i was not going back anyway, i did not go there to have some one hurt me. i walk a lot and her dang bandages made it impossible for me to do so or even live, no sleep at all the pain was horrid. i AM DOING MUCH BETTER NOW, i think the walking is helping somehow, i also am a vegan-- i know--- no one wants to hear it-- but it has helped my health out so i DO NOT care if people do not like when i say this, we all have to do what is good for us, changing my diet a few years ago changed my life and i feel better than i have in years i went from very active to totally sedentary, i do not know why. i do not work for or sponsor or promote anyone, just sharing my story, I have great mistrust of many medical prrofessionals, they view people as a meal ticket and not a human life-- again-- this is just my opinion-- do not shoot me for saying so, it just cant hurt to be aware of what you put into your body. always just be careful, the docs are always throwing pills at us, go look them up and their side effects before you stuff them down, there is plenty of available and good resources to read up on. this lady here seems to know her stuff. i just felt i must have had an unrealistic person i saw and even if she did do that for 18 or 20 years, it does not mesn she was the right fit for me. just another horrible time in life i cant forget fast enough. i hope you all will get well from what ever causes this really bad thing, people do not understand and would rather pass judgement on you as if you did something wrong. do not let that garbage live rent free in your head/. no one wants to be sick i am sorry to all who are it is nothing i ever expected my life to be

It takes awhile to get the hang of it. I use rubber gloves to put it on the foot, pull the heel into place, then pull the top up. Then bit by bit, edge the top part of the stocking up on your leg with the gloves. WIthout rubber gloves it's pretty impossible. Also, make sure your stockings are not too tight. And 20-30 compression is much easier to put on than 30-40.

@pamelalalaable I just read a comment from someone on another video that they like to use a little kinesiology tape to help keep their komprex pads in place while donning compression stockings. I haven't tried this yet, but I'm definitely ordering kinesiology tape on Amazon today to try this!
I wear thigh highs and anklets, and just yesterday thought to try putting pressure pads between the two layers like a compression Sandwich. I put my stockings on, then my anklets over top, then I slid in my Juzo Malleo pressure pads and it kinda worked. This was my first time trying the juzo Malleo pressure pads and I think I need something else. Maybe only a few pieces of gray foam instead. But using the anklet to hold the pressure pads seemed to work for me. My Anklets are open toed, which would be helpful if I wanted to slide in some grey foam or a swell spot over the top of the foot. I get toe edema, so I'm thinking of ordering closed toe anklets and trying to shimmy a thin piece of foam over the toes, forfoot, and around/under the ankle bones. I tried both 20-30 mmHg and 30-40 mmHg anklets. the 20-30 mmHg worked better imo because it was easier to physically maneuver and position the pads. But the 30-40 mmHg has heavier less smooth fabric and I felt like the pad placements were more secure. I'm definitely going to try the tape option, but I think I'll also still experiment with the sandwich method 😊 I'm learning that it's all trial and error and finding what works for you. Good luck to us all!

My mother & I started a medication & within 24 hours, both of our legs & feet started swelling. The doctors didn't believe me that is was the medication. I kept taking it like a dummy because I'd elevate my feet at night & the swelling would go down by morning but OMG I'd have to get up to pee 5 times a night! Well eventually, purplish dots started showing up on the tops of our feet. My mom wasn't on the dose I was so her swelling was as bad as mine. Overtime the swelling caused a tiny wound to pop open in the top of my right foot. No matter what I did, it wouldn't heal & the swelling from the meds was the cause (duh)
I switched to another med & within 5 days, all of the swelling in my left leg/foot went away but it would still swell on my right because of the damage with that wound. My mom came off the med completely & all of her swelling n dots went away. Now, the wound is halfway up my leg wrapped around completely 100% I'm not diabetic & no matter what I do, it won't heal. The swelling gets so bad it feels like a heartbeat till I elevate long enough for it to go down some. I honestly don't know what to do. This is a nightmare.

The problem that I experience on a regular basis is this ... Before there is any reduction in the swelling ... It is tremendously difficult to get into my shoes ... which means that the separate foot wrapping that you suggest in this video would make it IMPOSSIBLE to get into my shoes in addition to the existing swelling of the feet ...

I've done a lot of research after my mother's double bilateral mastectomy where 11 lymph nodes were also removed. She has little swelling under her armpits her arms are not swelled but her ankles and feet both swelled a few days after the operation which she was only in the hospital under 48 hours. I've done a lot of research and see that after breast cancer surgery lymphedema can also affect the legs and feet but her surgeon said that swelling had nothing to do with the operation her oncologist today said it was due to the fluids she got after the surgery which was 2 weeks ago and again she spent less than 48 hours in the hospital and got 1-2 bags of fluid. John Hopkins points to this being lymphedema I was just wondering what your thoughts are regarding this? She's currently on lasix I believe this is the 10th day of the lowest milligram per day the right foot has returned to normal the left has not. Using a finger putting moderate pressure on the foot and removing it after a few seconds does leave a dent that takes time to reform.

But although there was swelling for about the first three days, that went away and there is no swelling, except a small fluid sack on my knee. A dermatologist still said she "thinks" it's lymphedema.
