  • Do you want to shrink the size of your legs? Hold on. What I meant was, do you have lymphedema or swelling on your legs? If you do, then this video might be able to help you.
Before we get started, please see your doctor and make sure that you’re diagnosed with lymphedema. This is because they are several types of swelling and they have different types of management.
Lymphedema is a type of swelling caused by blockage In the lymphatic system. This can be because of lymph node removal or damage due to cancer or trauma.
To check if there is progress, you can measure your legs using a tape measure. Then at the end of measure again
Now that we understand what lymphedema is, let’s start managing that swelling.
First let’s do deep breathing. This will stimulate the deeper lymphatic systems.
Make sure that your belly expands when you inhale or Breathing in and you suck your belly and when you exhale. Let’s do 10 of those.
Now let’s lay down. Put pillows under your legs to make your legs higher than your heart. It is essential that gravity will help in draining back the lymph back to our heart.
You can do this before going to sleep or upon waking up. Now let’s do ankle pumps. Do this 10 times.
Next exercise is leg clams. Bring your feet together then We open And close I knees 10 times.
Now let’s do knees to chest. It might be easier to do one leg at a time. Bend your knee first and then slowly bring it up to your chest.
Now let’s do pelvic bridging. This will help in contracting the muscles of backside of your legs. Let’s do this 10 times.
No let’s set up. Now we’re going to do trunk twisters. Again this will stimulate the lymphatic system in our trunk. Let’s do 10 times.
No let me show you how to do retrograde massage. This is a type of massage that works for lymph drainage. This will help you drain the lymph or the fluid back to your heart and ultimately out by Peeing it out. Take note the fluid needs to come out somehow and this is by going to peeing. You might have to go to the bathroom more.
First massage the groin area. This is where there is good concentration lymph nodes. Massage going upwards. Do not starting from the feet but as close to the lymphatic nodes as possible. Then gradually go down. You don’t have to massage deep. Use your finger tips or the web formed by your thumb and the index finger. Just enough pressure to assist the lymphatic system.
You might ask how long you need to do this. Just take your time. Don’t be in a hurry. Most people will say that this feels good.
Now you need to get compression garments. You need to get your prescription from your doctor because it needs to be customized. You don’t want to compression stocking or garments to be very tight otherwise it will compromise the lymphatic system or compromise your heart condition if you have one.

Hello, my name is Stephen Hiatt and I have type 2 diabetes and swelling in my lower right leg (I've also had cellulitis in the same leg, same place, several times). I saw your video on reducing swelling in the legs and I couldn't believe that it really worked. I've been wearing one of those compression stockings (Copper Fit) and I would love to get rid of it. I've been doing the exercises you mentioned and I have seen some results. Thank you for this video.

I'm experiencing major pain in my left ankle it is swollen everyday after being on my feet more than 5 hours! I am a 51 yr young on a bad diet and smoke so in the morning I have to put this asper cream all over my left ankle and foot before I can even get to my morning bathroom routines .oh and in the middle of the night wen I'm sleeping I experience sharp shooting pain running from my toes to my calf that it hurts so bad I get woken up .finally after not being able to do this anymore I went to the ER at the hospital 😢 They ran all kind of tesr and came to the conclusion I am now diagnosed with gout so they gave me motrin and a week's worth of little magic pills that took it away for maybe 2 weeks and I was so happy but then without a notice the swollen black n blue painful ankle came back twice as hard with a vengeance! hospital told me to follup with a foot specialist but never did because the pain left .But see,I really don't think it's gout that I have but something else .I always wake up with bruises on my leg too.i have been watching your u tube videos lately and I'm learning alit of different ways vto try and 10:53 manage wat I'm going thru because it causes me stress and the pain is worse so thankful for your videos

I've had idiopathic lymphedema in my right leg for over 35 years. I also have multiple musculoskeletal conditions that make wrapping and compression garments painful to maintain. I use massage, elevation and nutrition to manage my leg. You have shown me a couple more exercises to include, thank you. I want to also mention to people with leg and food swelling that proper skin and nail care is essential, particularly if you are also diabetic.
Don't ignore your toenails, treat fungus and ingrowns immediately and use a mirror to inspect the soles of your feet. Dry skin or injuries to your legs can cause cellulitis so treat those properly. In spite of all my care, I still got a cellulitis that put me in the hospital for 2 weeks!
    Lovely video, many thanks.

Cindy, an occupational therapist told me just last year that an exercise I can do before I “graduate” up to the pelvic bridge exercise are Kegels, which are the muscles in the gluteus area. Squeezing them for ten seconds before releasing them and repeating that for at least ten repetitions several times a day would strengthen the pelvic area including the lower back muscles so that the pelvic bridge exercises would be a progression thereafter.

I watched your video great interest. I had surgery on my right leg to relocate blood vessels and restore blood flow to my right leg due to an aneurysm behind my knee. The blood clot is was causing pain in my calf while walking and cycling. Running was excruciatingly painful. The surgery was successful in that I have no more pain while walking or cycling. I go back to my doctor next month and hope he will tell me I’m okay to start running again.
I have swelling and inflammation in my foot, ankle and leg which is Lymphedema. I was told it may take up to two years to go away!
That’s too long. I am hopeful that doing these exercises twice daily will help to reduce my swelling.
    Thank you very much!

You give the clearest instructions on You Tube that I have seen. They are actually doable.
And I am an 87 yr. old female. Hope that will encourage others. I have copied your directions and keep them next to my bed so I won't miss anything, at least until I do them a few more times and have them memorized. Thanks again.

@@AngelMama Thank you. I watched his video and followed his instructions, before the evening the swelling was gone. When the swelling was going down I felt a tingling and a coolness. My leg in a few hours was down to normal size. I hope there will be awesome results for you also🙂

Thank you so much for saying this. I had 7 pelvic lymph nodes removed after dealing with Anal cancer when it spread. My legs have gotten really bad recently and I have been searching for something to help with this swelling. I hope this works for me also. Blessings to you both.

@@jacki2357 That is incredible timing! I'm so happy for your relief. I have struggled with consistent swelling in my right calf and foot for months. Prior to this, my lymphedema would flare in both legs, but I'd get it to go away in a few days, but this just isn't budging, and I'm afraid the cause of the swelling is from someone else, but the doctors are just blowing it off, because I have had lymphedema for several years. It has hurt so bad at times that it's made me cry like a baby. It tries to swell more than what my skin can stretch, and the pressure is just excruciating. A few mornings I have woken up, and it felt like my toes were on fire. My calf is always rock hard, and my skin is very red. Elevating does no justice. I do have compression stockings and leg pumps, but I can't utilize either, because I have bad knees and the pressure is just too much. I do the lymphatic drainage massage every chance I get, but time is not always my friend. This is the first I've known of the exercises, and I'm sooo hoping a new approach will help. I've had no quality of life for a very long time, and it's not one thing after another, it's one thing on top of another. Sadly, it's been that way for the majority of the last 15 years after I was forced to have a hysterectomy, because my uterus was damaged during another surgery. What's even sadder is I'm only 40.

The deep breathing at the beginning helps activate the lymphatic channel in the abdomen ready to receive the fluid from the legs. From here the fluid moves into the top of the chest where it enters the bloodstream .Brilliant routine.

It should because the swelling is causing pressure which is also painful
