    I had a BA Copper Spur UL2 for about 5 years and it got a 3-4" tear in the mesh of one of the doors. Sent it back to BA to be repaired. They couldn't repair it, so they sent me back a brand new one! Big Agnes is amazing!

      Using my Copper Spur in North Wales, it blew down in a storm and snapped a pole, replacement sections are not available at the moment in the UK, contacted Big Agnes and they sent me a pole section from Wisconson free of charge. Great company.

    BA rocks and has great customer service. I have three of their tents in my gear stable: a Tiger Wall UL 2 for solo BPing, a Copper Sur 3 for when I’m out with the wife or just one of my teenage kids, and a Flying Diamond 8 for car camping with the entire family (6 of us). Love their sleep systems as well.

    I have the Copper Spur HV UL3 for backpacking with my daughter, and just got the Tiger Wall UL2 Solution Dye for solo trips, which I took on a 4 day / 3 night Timberline Trail loop around Mt Hood last weekend. Performed perfectly . Both are amazing tents, easy to set up, and light. Love BA stuff!

      I’ve been using BA tents for years, along with other brands, and they’ve held up really well. I always set it up at home following a trip, will clean up a bit, and let air dry before repacking. Works great for me!

    I LOVE my Copper Spur, I don’t have the mtn glow. No need. With the awning you can also unzip both zippers and just stuff the square back under the rain fly and over the mesh for easy open door access. I’ve had it rain once and used the awning as intended sitting in a backpack chair. Worked great. I had the tiger wall, but I live in the Sierra which is basically granite. I could not ONCE stake it out properly with the semi-free standing ends, so gave up and got the copper spur. I’ve used it backpacking and travel car camping and have slept in it at least 60 nights with -0- issues.

    The BA Tiger Wall UL2 is the first tent I have ever owned, used it on two weekend trips now and I really like it. Very easy to set up for a newbie like me. Also plenty of space for me and all my gear, when using an extra wide sleeping pad. Wouldn’t share it with another person though, in that case I would go for the UL3 version.
    Only downside for me is the non adjustable guylines on the tent. Makes it harder to pitch for a beginner like me. Also after rain, when the nylon has started to sag a bit, I needed to redo all the stakes of the rainfly to tighten the pitch. Would’ve been a lot easier if the guylines were adjustable instead of precut.

    I have a Copper Spur UL2 HV. Love the quality, headroom, and the weight. The only issues I have with it are that it's a trapezoid instead of a rectangle, and that the doors open at the head end instead of the foot. If the tent were a rectangle our rectangular sleeping pads would fit well with no binding. Having the door opening at the foot also makes swinging one's feet in and out of the tent far easier, though it does make zipping the doors harder. I also have an REI Half Dome which opens at the foot which is why I even have an opinion on the matter.

    I've done about 30 nights in Copper Spur UL2. So far, so good. My first UL tent was REI brand and only lasted me 14 months before every zipper was toast. I'm 7 months in on this one.

    I have the Tiger Wall 2 and a Jack Rabbit3, I think that's what it's called. I purchased both tents on sale at REI. I paid 300.for my Tiger Wall and I use it solo. The Jack Rabbit is not the lightest tent but I split the weight with my daughter so it's fine. For me the Tiger Wall has made solo trips much more doable. I have a Granite Gear 38 L pack and a Western Mountaineering ultra 20 bag along with a bunch of other light gear. I am in my 60s so pack weight means alot. I am still doing the same or more mileage as I did 30 years ago because my pack is so much lighter. Someday I will pull the trigger on a Zpack big three. Take care. Nice channel and content, thanks.
    Update, pulled the trigger on a Zpacks Duplex and I love it. I took it on my hike of the Long Trail in Vermont and it’s a palace for my dog and I. Super easy to set up and the tent material is not super thin like your BA. Well worth the money.

  • @ldavis4428

    I would still buy another BA tent! My 1st was about 5 years old when It ceased being waterproof. BA gave me my purchase price credit for the tent and I bought another at a great price. I bought the copper spur HVUL1 bike packing tent in May. After 6 total nights of use, in August I discovered about 40% of the seam tape was loosening on the fly and some on the tent. BA would repair it and include free shipping but warned me it could take a while due to staffing. Luckily, where I purchased it online worked with me and they got a replacement tent sent out once FedEx had scanned my defective tent. I have 3 BA tents & 1 BA s.bag. The HVUL1 is my favorite. Sure, it's small but it keeps my pack weight down. The vestibule is monstrous! The storage is great. With my 21.5 in sleeping pad I have enough room on either side to set up my bag and other stuff in the tent. The vent up top was a key selling point for me. The zippers are quite good with a tiny bit of care taken.

    For extended use of these tents, it is advisable that you practice extra care with the zippers. They have a tendency to lose the ability to zip over time. The reason for this is that the zipper loosens itself and eventually doesn't apply enough pressure over time. I personally experienced this issue with the copper spur hv ul1, but experiences may vary.

    Some tent things are gimmicky. Thought the fly turning into an awning was too until getting my 3-door Salt Creek 3. OMFG it is awesome. Smart sunshade while allowing for airflow. But the third door is genius. Been in this industry for years and that third door is missed on my lighter tents including other Big Agnes Tiger Walk bikepacking tent. Thanks for your user insights once again

    I got the Scout 2 Carbon. I fabbed the rear pole, made a footprint, ditched the stakes (which are worthless in the Sierra) and replaced them with pads (circles of tarp material), and use BOTH of my poles to prop up the front so I don't have to dodge to get out, and added a second front guy for the same reason. All in all, with a bag to hold it all, 22 oz. I do not actually use a tent unless it is raining, so light is right.

    BA is a solid brand that makes great freestanding tents for experienced users. I only say that because you have to realize they are using light materials that require more care/caution than your typical newb is prepared to deal with. Inevitably (probably sooner than later) they will tear or break the tent and then blame the tent for their mistakes or carelessness. They aren't the end all be all, but you'd be hard pressed not to find a good tent for most people in their lineup.

    My lightest tent tent is a BA Scout UL2 and it's *fine*. It's shelter and it's light, but it's kind of a moisture trap and that inside trekking pole is a pain to deal with when you kick it over at night. However the lightness and compactness and ease definitely make it a worthwhile piece of kit.
    It's fine.

    Single skin so deal with condensation but it is very well ventilated with the open netting being under the tent eves it runs off the damp

    I have the tigerwall 2p and the copper spur 2p being delivered soon. Looking forward to trying them both out and seeing which one I prefer. Right now I'm leaning towards the copper spur.

    I've used big Agnes tents for close to 20 years and love them, but I just took a Copper Spur out of storage (2 years) and the shock cord is totally shot!! It's so slack I can barely stuff it back into the poles to set it up.

      I had a similar issue with my Copper Spur and BA replaced the cord and a couple of bent poles under warranty. The tent is over 3 years old and they fixed and replaced parts for free! Great service. Just create a repair report on their website.

      Montana is gorgeous and the mountain hiking is limitless. My boys and I just did a 56 mile/6 day hike into the Bob Marshall Wilderness in to the Chinese Wall. It was the most amazing time. Check it out 😉
      Dan Becker....you would LOVE this area also!

    Big agnes tents are pretty nice! I own the big agnes copper spur hv ul 1 tent in olive green (2019 version). Awesome little tent!! Lightweight, super fast pitch, extremely moisture resistant, spacious for a one man! Subdued color was a plus for me for stealth camping. Did have an weird stitching section near door zipper but it has never been a real issue other than cosmetic. I bought it new on amazon too so i can't rule out factory second completely..? Buckles on these ultralight tents can seem a little small and fragile but i haven't had one break or fail yet. Would totally recommend this tent. However they recently updated it in 2020 and it comes double doors with awning. Not a fan of the awning feature and not big on the color differences from the 2019 version. But im sure it performs just as good. I guess im just a "if it ain't broke don't fix it kinda guy" Lol wish they still made the old version because now i kinda want the 2 man version. Maybe one will pop up forsale who knows? The only other tents i have my eye on lately is the Nemo dragonfly bike packing version. I also like Tarp tents double rainbow Li (dyneema version).Good stuff always dan!! Love that new camera! Its like voodoo magic or something lol. Stay safe! Hike on!

    Are you aware of any B.A. models that require, or benefit from after-market seam sealing of rain fly, (with the sealer for Sil-Nylon of course)? When new, and/or after a few uses?

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  2 роки тому +4

      Not that I’m aware of. I’ve owned big Agnes for quite some time and never had to worry one bit about any seam sealing or have had leaks at all.

    I have the Tiger Wall 2 Platinum. The tent + dyneema stuff sack + fly + poles + cordage comes out to 2 lbs 1 oz on my scale (I believe they advertise 2 lb 4 oz). Great tent. Not a lot of storage inside.

    I have 2 BA tents. The Copper Spur hv2 Expedition and the Copper Spur Bikepack. Both have been amazing tents. The expedition can really take the punishment doled out by the high winds and storms at elevation. I know it's corny what they say about it being the last tent standing but I experienced just that. Went camping with a buddy when a ferocious storm hit and his tent was trashed, literally, he threw it away. The Expedition shunned the winds like nobody's business. The bikepack, although I've only had it out on a couple of occasions, seems to be of the same great quality. Both have been exposed to some heavy weather and neither has leaked a drop. My only criticism of the Expedition is how red it is inside during daylight hours. It's RED! It messes with my brain the redness. I know, what did I expect from a solid red tent right. Thank goodness I don't spend much time in it during the day. When I have the need for a new tent, BA will be my first stop, just not a solid red one. 😆

    I used the FlyCreek2Platnium for the past 8 years or so and loved it! Always cramped, but it was worth the trade off on how ultralight and compressible it was … Fast-forward to now, we have a 2 year old and decided to “upgrade” to the CopperSpur3… AND OH MY GOODNESS it’s huge!!!! So luxuriously and where we’re at in our lives now, it is SO worth the extra weight and size! We love the CopperSpur3 now and I would say it’s now my favorite tent of all time

    Hey Dan! Looking for the best lightest 4 person family backpacking tent, so far I see the “Big Agnus Copper Spur HV UL4 Tent 4 person and 3 season” that is only 5lbs 8 oz for a 4 person tent! Do you think this is the best light family backpacking tent option for 4 person or do you think there is a better one? I have a wife and 3 small kiddos to stuff in there. It’s not cheap at $650. Thanks!

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  2 роки тому

      Definitely. I would say that’s probably at the top of my list for a tent that large and at that weight. Definitely expensive though! Alternative would be a couple of 2 person tents. Something less expensive and a bit heavier that you could buy two of. Paria Outdoor Products sells some pretty decent tents that are very expensive for what they are.

    My husband and I are new backpackers. We are both tall and on the large size. We were looking at a BA 2 person tent. Do you think it would be too small?

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  2 роки тому +1

      It’s a bit cramped but doable if you keep your gear in the vestibules. I’ve used a 2p with my wife and it’s been fine. But a 3p will have more wiggle room and you can split the weight between the two of you.
