Check the "SHOW MORE" above for links to the other videos on this Polaris RZR. I think you'll be surprised how much &%#@ came off the factory water pump impeller when it got hot. It's like one of those toys that grows in water!
that sucks. this sensor also failed on my 1993 legacy (which is my daily) but I saw the smoke coming out of the hot exhaust manifold soaked in oil and stopped the car before it could blow up. I not only replaced the sensor but also installed one of those old sensors (like in carburated cars) and plugged it to the other fan, so now I have two completely independent system that I hope will never fail. thanks and hope you'll get better soon
Whoa,I've never seen this kind of sensor failure before?Usually they just don't operate the fan,but this is something new to me!Thanks for your insight!
That pump seal looks just like the seals used on swimming pool pumps. They use two spring loaded ceramic disks. They work great but you never want to run the pump dry. The friction of the two ceramic disks rubbing without coolant will cook the seals.
Not gonna read all the comments but did just watch the video and saw this is a six year old video So a couple things. First off I don’t believe that the engine overheated because of the sensor. 700 and 800 motors Are notorious for having the oil pressure regulator valve get stuck and create a low oil pressure condition which in turn overheats the motor and starts wiping components out. In terms of the cylinder you didn’t need to buy a brand new cylinder. Could’ve sent that cylinder out to 1 of 3 places to be repaired and replated and it would’ve actually been better than a brand new Polaris cylinder. And then in terms of the gaskets a complete engine gasket kit would have had about the items you spoke of for your valves, thin small metal inserts and the valve stem seals. I would’ve went with aftermarket valves as well. There’s definitely nothing special about Polaris OEM parts I am curious as to whether or not the machine got put back together and then the crank went out.
+youtubasoarus Probably just to save some money. lol. Actually, maybe it is planned obsolescence. Even though you could go out an buy a brand new Chevy Sonic or Ford Fiesta for the price, or almost 2 of those Mitsubishi Mirage things....it's still considered an ATV. So people may tend to be a little more forgiving for issues and just buy another. It is a rich guys toy anyways. lol.
That is a brutal chain of effect! One small, cheap part fails, takes out other part, after part, after part! Sounds like it was designed to make Polaris some extra cash flow!
we had a temp sensor go bad on our arctic cat, caught it before it damaged motor, temp sensor $150.00... so we just wired the fan to the ignition, so if the motor is running, the fan is running. cost to repair about $0.50 for heat shrink, that was at least 3 years ago, never had any further trouble, also never replaced the temp sensor.
Wayne Hartneck when the engine gets up to operating temperature it is designed so that it burns contaminants out of the oil for example moisture. Which is common in an ATV engine. If you bypass the ability to reach operating temperature by constantly cooling the coolant then you run the risk of shortening the life expectancy of your engine oil. I strongly recommend either changing the engine oil more frequently than advised or reinstate the original control over the cooling system
Well , nightmare valve sit explosion happen to me on my 77 Vw van 2000cc air cool , going the subaru way now. Thans for the fun video', Your brightened my day every time .
bmw often uses plastic water pump impeller and they go bad pretty frequently too which ends up causing all sorts of damage lol. Its a way they can make alot of money they recommend a complete cooling system overhaul after some time because alot of parts are plastic and basically deteriorate even with normal use
your water pump failed first. then it popped your temp sensor. I had the same thing happen to my scrambler 500 years ago. btw water pump seal is a glass seal and the oils from your skin touching it can make it fail so clean it before installing it.
Andy Fromm I'm thinking something similar as well. The impellers usually fail when they are run dry. I wanted to ask if there was Bluing of the components indicating overheating. Also indicating lack of coolant flow. Which would be as a result of low-flow due to a worn-out impeller. Possibly run with low coolant
+Bbernhardsr The plastic is CRAZY cheap to produce and build. It also improves acceleration and fuel economy.... still not worth it! On a meter of "cheaper, faster, better" It's not better.
+briansmobile1 That is true but I just thought about it and realized that it actually helps when big companies make it "cheaper, faster, better" because it gives the "small guy" an oppertunity to profit by coming up with an aluminum alternative like the one you got off flea bay.
I think I would trash that thermistor and use an after market elec. fan controller, like what is used on after market elec. fan set ups. I would also have a switch to over ride it to turn the fan on manually. I think these polaris things are completely overated. Your vids are very interesting. Thanks
what confuses me here is how did the thermistor fail within an operating range it should have gone way outside of acceptable parameters for the ECU which Polaris has programmed to shut down the engine when it is outside of operating limits and also illuminate the mil light
Logan Ring you nailed it. Chances are this thing ran dry and cooked the impeller. In turn it cooked the thermistor. Sounds like the initial overheat was possibly neglected by the occasional top up.
I hope that by now you have recovered from the flu and have not exchanged it for Covid_19. Placing an Aluminium impeller into the coolant is a big mistake, the Fuji Motors work excellent with the original impeller, they also last forever!
Pretty sure that's a carbon seal. Not Good to touch with dirty hands. Will inbed material into it because how soft it is and will definitely cause early failure
+Andy Plater Get better! I've escaped two people getting cold at the shop so far. Knock on wood...wait, I'll say a prayer instead of being superstitious. :)
I scratched my head on that too. The parts people that I worked with on this (factory Polaris) were bad. Really, really bad. For all I know they messed up that part of the order too. Things were way late, missing, wrong, you name it. It could be an update too, but I doubt it. Bottom line. It ran great, my therapist (paramotor) got me through it. And it ran better than ever when it was done.
Brian great vid thanks for the info i have a question if you dont mind me asking i have 2012 rzr 800 and it started consuming oil real bad and after watching your vids i see theres no valve guide seals on the exhaust side it makes no sense as to why they didnt use one from the factory when you rebuilt yours did you use seals on the exhaust side as well ? . as far as the oil burning before i tear it down im going to see if it has some kind of crank case ventilation issue first then run a leak down check to try n pin point the problem but i have a feeling its more than likely oil rings . let me know if you have any other ideas thank you Bill
Did you ever figure out why your RZR was using so much oil. I have one and I’m curious. Mine has a lot of oil in the Air filter. It’s blowing off through the pcv. I seen a video where the plunger in the oil pressure relief valve is getting stuck.
@@screamneagle8420 i found out the crank case vent tube had a slit in it and was sucking dirt into the induction and it wasted the rings so im i need now to replace the jugs pistons and rings
I own a Polaris, and as much as it kills me to say but they are not made well. Honda is the most bullet proof machine. My RZR 570 is great but has a lot of flaws. I see Polaris loosing the market with over pricing just Like Harley Davidson is slowly going out of business.

DrRawley it's probably a Polaris dealer he's getting the parts from and sometimes parts get back ordered. I worked at a dealer level before and that sometimes happens.
briansmobile1 if you're ordering from a dealer, the dealer has to get his parts from its supplier which is usually one of the parts storage facilities. Supposing Parts become backordered.. that's where the parts take a while to come. You know this already if you're working in an aftermarket facility because they know it at the dealer level and you are one step lower on the food chain as an aftermarket guy

The engineer probably specified a good plastic for the impeller but purchasing substituted something cheaper. "just doing our job"
+carabela125 Good point.
+carabela125 Not only that but Brian also stated that the coolant was overheated... so that's more stress on the plastic than was intended
David F. True.
your awesome man i love all your videos wether they pertain to anything i'm doing or not wether your sick or not your awesome man

Change the thermostat anyway, if it has been toasted it will fail sooner or later, and cook the rest again. Cheap to add to that big bill anyway.
+SeanBZA I did. Good call.
Plastic water pump impeller. Genius!
+tytotheler92 Planned obsolescence? (ie. designed to fail)

It's all junk anymore really.
Jonathan Alvey
there are plastics suitable for the application... but who knows if the plastic they use is suitable? haha
Hope you get to feeling better soon. Mullein leaf, elderberry concentrate, echinacea
That is a brutal chain of effect! One small, cheap part fails, takes out other part, after part, after part! Sounds like it was designed to make Polaris some extra cash flow!

The 4.7 Liter V8 from Chrysler/Jeep tend to do this also, and at very low level overheats also.
That’s why I prefer the good ole 4.0 straight 6👍🏻
A couple years late, but both the head, and cylinder can be repaired for a tiny fraction of the price of new.
Done the 1.9l Fords with the dropped valve before.
+sixtyfiveford Me too - not many of them around anymore.
Love all your videos Bro
Hope to see the video on the fork truck soon
Great video even though your sick! This is yet another example of engineered failure I think. Maybe an aftermarket manual temp gauge is in order?
+Bbernhardsr The plastic is CRAZY cheap to produce and build. It also improves acceleration and fuel economy.... still not worth it! On a meter of "cheaper, faster, better" It's not better.

Those seals are called "mechanical seals". Used a lot on marine salt water pumps.
+Jerry Whitaker Thanks for the tip Jerry! Smart guy!
+Jerry Whitaker That'st why it looked familiar. The only part on a pacer pump that isn't constantly grenaded!
Annnnd now i know how to test a thermostat. thanks thats actually really helpful. i feel dum that i hadn't thought of that before.

Nice vid, horrible cold you got there Brian , I didn't think Vikings could get a cold :)
+Steve Rob You keep making me laugh today. :) And cough, I hope you get better too Brian!

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Great video.
Those are some expensive parts. The Dodge 4.7l and 5.7l are great for dropping seats as well.
+m ph I know right? Similar cost on my full sized car.
I believe you could save a chunk by getting the cylinder welded and re-nickasiled. just my 02.
oh...thought you fixed that oil leaking into the exhaust...over heat from water pump failure
+RobsPackanShine That was an Arctic Cat four wheeler. (It's fixed now) This is a Polaris side by side. They all run together for me sometimes too. ; )
yw...Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family
is there a chance that you could check the resistance and see where it falls on the resistance to temperature chart it should have shut down
Good Work!
Hahaha @ 2:25 .. that engine was tore up. Hope you feel better soon.
Cool video. Hope you get better soon brother. :)
Where did you find a head for $500? I know this was years ago but I thought I'd ask.
Not surprised that the Polaris thermister failed, seen it many many times.
+snocrushr I bet you have Mr. Snowmobile aficionado!
+snocrushr Yeah, my brother is a motorcycle and BRP mechanic at RPM motorsports, and these polaris's are crap. Chinese motors that are no good.
what size its the engine and how much it cost you to repair? means gaskets water pump belt and head at machine shop?
This is why I always have my speedo showing me my water temps... At least if the sensor failed I would see that I am not getting a reading anymore.
Welcome to the world of Polaris price gouging on their parts. It's ridiculous
Streeters Garage brp and arctic cat do it too
Brian what is the total cost of repairs? No warranty on a 2014 Polaris?
I have a honda rancher 350 with the exact same problem. What caused the seat to chip on your engine?
Pretty sure that's a carbon seal. Not Good to touch with dirty hands. Will inbed material into it because how soft it is and will definitely cause early failure
What was the product that needed replaced and where did you purchase it from?
Have companies given up on plastic water pump impellers yet or is VW and others still uising the junk
Now way, a rzr 800 with engine problem. That's a very rare situation, kinda once in a million. Lol
you shouldn't touch the face of a carbon seal.. the oils and such on your fingers will damage the sealing surface..
Hi, do you know if a 1999 Polaris Magnum 500 engine can replace a bad engine in a 1997 Polaris Sportsman 500? thanks man
Please tell me you own that Telehandler those things are awesome.
"the piston head got munchie munchie" hahaha
I feel ya man, I'm sick too.
+Andy Plater Get better! I've escaped two people getting cold at the shop so far. Knock on wood...wait, I'll say a prayer instead of being superstitious. :)
i have a 2015 rzr, do these have the same issue you are describing in this video?
Those heads are not the same. The new one has no combustion chamber dome. Whats up with dat?
I scratched my head on that too. The parts people that I worked with on this (factory Polaris) were bad. Really, really bad. For all I know they messed up that part of the order too. Things were way late, missing, wrong, you name it. It could be an update too, but I doubt it. Bottom line. It ran great, my therapist (paramotor) got me through it. Now i'm worried my Polaris is going to eat itself alive.
+vamisk Check that impeller. See if it's plastic.
+vamisk :) Prevenative "maintenance" can really save you! (Quotes due to it being beyond maintenance)
Good deal on that impeller.
2:55 You made a robot!;)

Decorative Iron Plus Thanks for the reply!
Any theory on why the thermister failed like it did ?
+theoldwizard998 It's a common problem. I would attribute it to poor material choice.
Does this apply to the sportsman 800 motor also?
Cheaper just to buy a new engine?
no temperature gauge on these ?
Damn you pushed through that. I know this is an old video.
what will need fir rzr 1000 s
you the Man !
so at a point the overheat light was on... then it went off due to a sensor failing... so your client kept on hill-topping.
+Albion Laster "limp home" was the description he gave.
+briansmobile1 doing wheelies
Plastic water impeller! Polaris Engineering at its best!
Read Polaris and thought it is about Volvo tuned by Polaris that is going to be a crap.
Hey whats the name of the shop you work at? when i ever need a clutch replacing id like to come to you haha, i live in slc utah.

I just dropped 10k on a Polaris lol, these vids freak me out! Lol
Doctor Astronomy I'm right with you lol
Same here boys. Polaris is fine not the best nor worst.
That's another reason why I would never buy a Poolaris

The UHHHbama pic!! LMAO!! HAHAHA

A mental note to myself, AVOID Polaris!

i hate anything rotox can am ect junk buy japan stuff jujube cylinders prices to high bmw Mercedes dodge using aluminum engines now
The new "outro" music scares me :)
Me too. I just had to do something that reflected the Polaris mood. It's art.
briansmobile1 That's cool. You see, even when you are discouraged and pissed off you kinda sound positivem to me at least. Like nothing bad touches you :) a hug from Italy
