  • This classic car, a 1952 Pontiac Chieftain Coupe was originally from Wisconsin. Have been sitting for a very long time total, but last owner began restoring it and kept it in a barn and started the engine about eight years ago. The engine is a straight eight with a hydramatic automatic transmission. This classic car is a project car and needs full restoration, but will it start, run and drive?..
This is not a how to video. Some of the car repairs are temporary and are not considered as a restoration.

I'm so glad I stumbled on this Fella's Channel. Self explanatory procedures without narration and the silly, stupid vocabulary plus the boring synopsis of Mechanical abilities.

Nice old car. Love mine- great fun to drive. Not exactly fast, but smooth and quiet. 20 weight Allison/Caterpillar wet clutch fluid for the gearbox. Dexron/Mercon is too light (though works well in winter, 10W). Fuel gauge pegging to F is a good sign; the gauge itself works but the sender unit in these works backwards from most, if the sender quits or the wire comes undone, it'll shoot to full. The clocks and radios can be rebuilt to work also but they're fiddly work.
Enjoy it if you finish building it!

One of my fav Pontiac models. Needs no trim and emblems for my liking...just nice paint. IMO.

Looks very solid with most of the deluxe trim present. Seems to run really good. Won't take much to bring this one back. Years ago, my Dad had a 54 Chieftain.

To the best of my inquiry, my father had a '56 Strato Chief after he ditched the '55 Ford Custom. This was in like 1962 ! My little tyke mind logged the fact that I puk'ed in the back seat after having taken a good wiff of those moldy old seats, similar to what was shown here. He didn't have it long since he was forced to liquidate the business. The bank gave him a '59 VW Bug and the rest is history. At least I left my mark in that 'ole Strato Chief !

Looks like original paint? I was born in '49. I remember those old cars. They had character.

My 2nd car was a 1951 Pontiac straight 8 four door sedan. I got this car from my Dad. I had an original Model A Ford with mechanical brakes at the time, and was going to upgrade to hydraulic brakes. Dad didn't want me to ruin the cars originality. He offered to trade his '51 Pontiac for my Model A. I simply was not interested in the old family car! He suggested that we trade and then sell the old Pontiac, then buy what I wanted. And that's how I got my 1st Oldsmobile with a Rocket 88 V8. On reflection, the '51 Pontiac was a nice car, and that straight 8 would really get out and move.
Post Script: My younger brother ended up owning the Model A. He did a complete, body off restoration. He owned it for 10 years, was president of the local Model A club, etc. I have no doubt it still exists, sure would like to know who has it now.

The early GM hydramatics had park by putting the selector in reverse when the engine is off.

I have to ask, did you have to do much to fine-tune the timing? I am currently trying to get a '51 running and it is kicking my butt. I have gone through the carb, informal compression test feels good in all 8 cylinders, new plugs/wires/points, and there is spark. Does it just need to be spun faster? Is there a trick to these old 6 volt systems?

After lis'nun to the other channels now for the past couple of years, your channel has become a refuge from their chatter.
This is my second time to watch and now 3/4's the way thru I had to stop to comment just to say, who ever you are*, I really admire your channel and the way you handle the tasks at hand.
    * I will look later at your ABOUT section to get to know more about who you are, but in the maen time let me add that you got IT going on! FANTASTIC variety and just most compelling for those of us whom just love these old cars. and the Native music score for your ending was perfectly suited for this Chieftain.

I have a 53 like this only it has four doors. There's a heater coil underneath the seat and the amber colored Indian head hood ornament on mine is supposed to light up at night. I think you add transmission fluid in the transfer case in the floorboard and mine doesn't have park only neutral, drive and low I think. It's got a cracked block what's the best way to fix that?
