I feel like the best part of this was that it looked like is SHOULD have been a horror game, but the main character is just "I've got this. I'm enjoying myself." and it completely changes the vibe of the game. She IS in Control.
Totally agree, especially by the end of the game and how she openly accepts her role as director.
Exactly
I fucking love how pretty much everyone in the game is a professional that treats this absolutely bonkers situation as a slightly more difficult than usual occurrence that is stressful but they’re going to take care of business. That plus the truly lived-in nature of the offices is what puts the FBC up there with Black Mesa for one of the best video games settings.
"Sorry, the bathrooms on this floor are temporarily in another dimension. You'll have to use the ones on the next floor."
I think another thing that really ads to the horror of this game is other than all the supernatural stuff it takes place in regular office building; just a normal thing you would see in the real world. Adding in the crazy stuff makes it feel like Frankenstein just broke into your house lol.
The Board saying not to trust the Former by saying " do not believe/get hyped " is underated line 😂
And then following it up by assuring they offer better benefits 😂
Love the way the board is portrayed.
Did anyone looked for Darling in the Gym sector? Cause my bloke is jacked
Yeah I noticed that. Dude probably punched out some hiss for interrupting his workout
Lmao I also was like, damn boy, you've been lifting huh 😅
Bros been working with that HRA like it’s a weighted vest
Ha ok I thought so too 😂 I was like damn old boy puts in the work
Honestly that was such a surprise lmao, I thought he would be a skinny nerd
Its impossible to hate Darling, he shakes his ass in time with the cowbell, how can anyone hate that
Are we not gonna talk about the fact the board tried to bribe jesse with health care?
Yo lol I just beat this game and this comment has me dying. This game is so strange and funny and little details like this that I had completely forgotten make me appreciate it even more.
Pretty sure it wasn’t a bribe…more of a veiled threat.
I love how Ahti responds to Jessie's inner-monolgue. Ahti is the best
course he is hes the real power in the oldest house after all.
@@Kris-wo4pj This is very true.
@@Kris-wo4pjI think it is mentioned somewhere that he is a senile god. Maybe Odin himself. there is quite a bit of Norse mythology in this.
I love Ahti. Couldn’t understand what the fuck he was saying on my first playthrough lol
@@ADMNtek Odin is already a character in Alan wake and it's been said that the 2 games are connected, so it's unlikely that ahti is Odin
I love Control. I would give... anything. Anything. To play this game for the first time again. To experience it like I did before I memorized every single line of lore and dialogue after one playthrough. No other game in my life impacted me like Control did. It fucking gets me. It resonates with me.
Resonates you say...
that's super hardcore, like, its just a game. but thats really shway.
I liked the fast paced gunplay and the lore was cool but something about the charcters and the plot in general just felt a bit off to me - like the developers had a lot of great ideas for a world but not really how to write compelling charcters or a gripping story, you just unlock areas and gradually clean the place out. In the end it just felt like a good game to play but nothing I really had a connection with.
Off topic but Trent’s paranoid babble when Jesse is in limbo is so well performed by James McCafferey. An understated, disturbing and depressing performance that I wish he got more recognition for.
I don't think the Hiss made Trench off himself. I think the Board did as punishment for turning on the slide projector. During the Take Control mission , it shows Trench with the talking gun up to his head. Like when Jesse became director in the beginning and the Board was speaking to her through the gun. Not to mention the scene where Emily Pope says that directors aren't known to have normal retirements.
100% agree! If we take the vision of Jesse holding the gun to her head when she picks it up at the beginning to be literal and the Board Testing/Processing her application to become Director it implies that binding to the Service Weapon gives the Board a way to Control/Manipulate the person holding it. It would then make sense that the Board would be able to Dismiss/Kill the Director if they were displeased.
Yeah I agree. It wouldn't make much sense for the his to want to off him. The board has much more of a reason to.
@@ronniewhitedx My only argument against this theory, which I also had at first, is the board could have offed him once they saw what he was doing and before letting in the hiss. And Dylan (representative of the Hiss) mockingly shows himself mimicking the movement. So they are either mocking the fact that the board did it themselves or saying they did it.
@@EnbyvalentI don't think they can control Jesse as well otherwise they would have done it when former gives her a power boost.
@@andrewgiovannini6613or they want the hiss out. Something hinted at in foundation when they have Jesse repair the corrupted nail.
"You want this to be true.... A Control video for you.... baby, baby, baby, YEAH!"
Orange peel.
I was not expecting CONTROL to be so intimately tied to Alan Wake's lore.
Remedy was doing a shared universe and played us all like a fiddle from the very beguining...!
Now to tell what happened to Max in this world, has Wake manipulated his life too or is Max somehow invulnerable to those changes because he also is being manipulated by something from his adventures..
@@MinecraftLD10 Max is safe. Ahti proved all you need is a good Rockstar to keep you safe.
@@woogha So basically Max has his own 'story' that people can get intertwined into all the same, and in being near the presence of Wake's story, he could effectively change things without being affected by them, at least I assume until the power of the Dark Place gets strong enough again like with what happened in Alan Wake II.
@@MinecraftLD10 I'm wondering if the remakes will address the remedyverse. I was mostly joking about Max Payne being sold to Rockstar and how in the remedyverse Rock Stars keep heroes safe.
Seeing everything Alan Wake related in Control makes my heart cry after playing the sequel. Still can't believe Alan Wake 2 is real.
Wonderful videos!!!
Same! Alan Wake 2 lore scripting after NG+ content is released is going to be absolutely bonkers.
Looking forward to Alan Wake 2! I worked on the original release of Alan Wake on the 360 (Just a bug finder, game tester) and I was glad to be a part of it. I hope a Control 2 is also in the future someday! I love how SCP-like it is.
Must have been nice working with Remedy on it, the dev team seems very friendly
@@josuepviana I was over on the Microsoft side at Microsoft Game Studios. Though I also had a nice team too. :)
I really enjoyed Alan Wake. But I loved Control. The strangeness of the paranatural entities and events mixed with the mundanity of an office environment was oddly pleasant. I can't wait for the sequel.
In my head the reason they never brought Jesse in when they obviously kept tabs on her through the years it's not because Darling was content with only having Dylan or even just for a backup to me it was an experiment to see how you make a good director is it better to teach and mold them or is it better to let them be free-range and grow on their own
Yup, Jesse was the control subject.
The amount of meanings Remedy gave "control" is honestly quite funny 😂
@@TheOnlyShrikedude this comment and your reply just blew my mind!!
After playing both games and watching countless video essays on them. It's still just utterly AWE-inspiring how Remedy manages to tie this all together. I love it so much!!!
AWE-inspiring? That’s an Ash Act violation!
The world building and writing is honestly OUT OF THIS WORLD.
The payoff for YEARS of work is the most satisfying thing ive ever seen
That’s what got me. I went in blind and never played Alan Wake. But I knew about the game. It was amazing how they tied that into him by the collections I found. Now I’m playing Alan Wake and even though I’m playing out of order….it still goes together perfectly
Hehe Just notised that the Janitors name is Finnish god how rules the sea and we pronounce it more like (Ah-Ti)
@@AC-hj9tv What?
So well done! I'm glad you didn't go into too much detail on the Ashtray Maze. Best to let new players experience that blind.
This was so beautiful, Tip. I’ve seen several versions of story summaries for Control, and no one has communicated beautifully the partnership & connection between Jesse and Polaris. I cried a bit when I finally got the whole story from that perspective, because all this time Polaris was not just another tool to use - she was Jesse’s partner through thick and thin.
I can’t wait for your AW2 storytelling! I hope we find out where Dr. Darling went. He’s such an enigmatic character. Are we also getting more stories on the other areas and objects in the FBC? And also what the former Director of Ops mission was.
Kudos again 👏
"Ahti is a paranatural entity that plays by his own rules." Ah yes, the archetypal Finn.
Alan Wake 2 has me playing through the first game and Control again. Love listening to these videos while I work!
Same here
The moment I knew this game was for me? When you find director Trench for the first time. Up until then, I had blithely assumed the spiraling pattern was just a bit of UI, directing me the player. But when Polaris highlights the service revolver and Jesse reacted? I was sold!
Love this game and this series!
I have recently watched the playlist about the "Remedy-verse" from the channel "Lore Dump".
Your styles of explaining things and telling stories are really different, but you are both extremely entertaining.
Thank you for this video: I was waiting for it ❤
Youve got to take a look at Gaming University
Theres also Gaming University!
@@josuepviana that channel was advertised by Monty and replied to one of their videos, if I remember correctly :D
I subscribed to them, but still haven't started watching his videos!
@@delmattia96 he did a really interesting theory on Thomas Zane recently, its a good one off to check out!
47:47 : "the feeling of losing Control"... gotta love a lady who can master metalanguage with such nonchalance. XD
Amazing work again, thank you for it. :)
They were in the Astral Plane not Hiss World in the end! It was red because they had penetrated the Astral Plane. Anywhere there is a pyramid means the board is involved.
Really appreciate your pace getting these out, because Control/Alan Wake has huge amounts of background lore
MORE LORE FROM THE LORE LADY!!! WOOOO!!!
I got so sucked into the Alan Wake video I forgot that this was a control lore series lol. Love your videos
God, I wish we got more FBC games. Excited for whether we get a Jesse easter egg in Alan Wake 2 like we got an Alan Wake easter egg in the Panopticon.
They have announced a sequel to Control as well as a Control spinoff, so it sounds like there's more FBC in our future
@@Viryl_TV Oh hell yeah! Though I have to wonder what happens to Jesse then. She's super OP by the end of the first game, so I wonder how things will play out with the sequel.
@@41tinman41 She is super op, yeah. But that said, the whole "stealing powers" thing has A LOT of potential for sidegrades instead of straight upgrades. Either that, or she goes out how most Directors tend to go out...
@@Existential_Robot True. But I have a feeling the Board isn't looking to replace her just yet. She's been the best asset so far, and one that seems to understand better than anyone else that the Director isn't to be pushed around by some entity who wouldn't even want to clean up their own messes.
Really nice touch Athi's song at the end.
Loved the video.
Beat control for the second time yesterday in preparation for this, let’s see if my headcannon that the board and the former are just bitter ex’s is true
The similarities with Twinpeaks lore is so cool to me.
after the old gods of Asgard fight Jessie says what we were all thinking... "woah... that was awesome" 😎😂
I just finished watching the rest of the series and this video came out. What a joy, not having to wait!
Emily and Jesse's.........friendship.....is my favorite dynamic in the game
Alright part 2 let's go!
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Alan Wake orchestrated the events of control. In this case I see him more as a chronicler than an author. And while writing about it, he is able to insert himself into the story? I guess the thought of him influencing/controlling the board, the hiss, hedron/polaris and by extension Jesse bothers me. Feels like a violation of character agency.
I am choosing to believe this presentation is being delivered by Emily Pope
I jumped when i saw this!!!!! This is awesome. Very excellent lore video. Even after playing it i couldn't peice all of this together, so im happy to see you've dug deep. Good stuff. Also that ending...
I wish I could like videos more than once some work I find on UA-cam are just phenomenal
YESSSSSS!! more lore
HELL YEAH!!! Always a good day when you put a video out! Thank you for everything you do!!!
Amazing work on this series! Loved how you paced out all the lore to make it flow narratively!
You are a very gifted storyteller, and telling stories is one of the most human things.
nice! part 1 of this series was the first video i watched from your channel. been looking forward to this one!
I really appreciate how this covers not just the main game, but the key DLC, delving into The Nail (after it was well explained in the 1st part) and the AWE DLC (despite having watched an Alan Wake playthrough, it never clicked for me who the big monster guy was when I fought him in Control). I loved this game and it's great to see such life brought to it in a great summary, thoroughly entertaining but quite informative. Thank you for these great vids, Tiptoe!
Ever since the first small one you did of control ,then Allan wake I was waiting YUSSSSSSSSS🎉
Been eagerly awaiting this, I enjoyed the first ones so much I started replaying Control.
saw pt 1 of this today, picked up CONTROL again, and now you post this?! Polaris really must be with me
My god, the amazing recap on Alan Wake and Control was just what I needed. Loved these games, but I can't lie. The story was a bit confusing.
To finally hear them being so well put together and explained is more than I could ever ask for.
Seeing the effort and quality put into these were incredible and made me an instant subscriber!
Stories like this always go over my head. Maybe it’s my ADHD lol. It’s hard not to get distracted and with this game every little memo and environmental detail is a piece of the puzzle. So this series has really heighten my enjoyment of the game as I get to have a guide take me through everything I experienced. It’s interesting how even though I didn’t capture a lot of this, the vibe of it was still there. There was enough there to always keep me engaged.
These videos of Alan Wake and Control are amazing and really helpful because its alot of weird stuff to remember thankyou for spending so much of your time making these.
Awww yeah! Thank you for the qork!🎉
That was a wild ride. Loved the game but it's been awhile. Great deep dive into the plethora of documents this game has too. Great content 👌🏻
I love how clearly you went through everything with Control. I think it's easy to get lost with so much happening in the game, so you've really helped clear things up that I was confused on! Love these videos!
When I first tried Control, I was expecting little more than a tech demo. There hasn't been a game living rent-free in my mind to the degree this game does since at least Silent Hill 2. Lesson learnt. I won't be underestimating Remedy again.
Great Video as usual!
Amazingly fantastic recap , awesome. Cheers
I've watched several Alan Wake / Control summary videos in anticipation of Alan Wake 2. Your series is the best I've seen. Really appreciate how easy (considering the source material) you made it to follow along.
It’s not a loop. It’s a SPIRAL!
That "heeeey buddy" gave me goosebumps😍
This was absolutely AMAZING. Goddamn I love the story and world building going on here.
I've watched several other lore videos about the Alan Wake universe. This series has been the most enjoyable. Your presentation and details are great. And you add a little flavor here and there instead of just wrote regurgitation of the facts. Thank you.
I really enjoy your videos! It's been great listeining to you tell the stories of these games. Looking forward to more storytime XD
So glad you're diving into this universe. Love these games!
39:17 The FBC basically brought the Hiss attack on themselves with their abuse and neglect of Dylan.
Exceptionally well done.
this is definitely one of ym favorite games to come out in recent years, i love the atmosphere and story and how weird yet captivating everyting is, like the idea of everyday common objects being way more than it seems to us due to a phenomena we cant sense just hits the spot
Can't wait to see how the events of Alan Wake 2 continue this lore stuff. I've got my own ideas, but your videos are very thorough.
I love polaris and Jesse’s relationship so much😊
Can't wait for your video on AW2. Great content btw.
Ahti is Tom Bombadil & you can NOT convince me otherwise
Jesse is enjoying herself, which helps hide how tragic Control is for Dylan and Jesse Faden. If Dylan had been treated with the humanity he deserved, this could have been avoided, or at the very least, mitigated. Dylan wouldn't have turned his back on Polaris, Hedron, Jesse, and ultimately his own humanity. He could have fostered a real connection with Hedron; he could have become a powerful Parautilitarian in his own right without succumbing to The Hiss for the veneer of agency.
Trench may still have played stupid games and won stupid prizes, but Dylan's situation would've been different. Jesse would have a brother to return to with open arms - Dylan wouldn't have suffered so much trauma on top of having lost everything and everyone he knew.
I can't wait till your Alan Wake 2 video. You should do Quatum Break as well!
I’m now a fan of your channel 🤲 you are the best. I love lore and people who explain it
alan wake/control lore and the connections between the two games is some of the best writing ive ever seen, and as someone who played control first before really knowing anything about alan wake, my mind is currently being blown
Good game. Even better when the accessibility stuff was added.
The one thing in the story of Control that bothered me was that they burned the slides for the projector. Not the fact that they would do it, but that they -could- do it. Throughout the game they make repeated mentions that altered items can't be destroyed. -- Flamethrower to the rubber ducky, and the fridge surviving the collapse of a building. -- So if all altered items can't be destroyed, then how were they able to burn the slides for the projector? I believe it was stated that the FBC tried to use other slides in the projector but they did nothing meaning the slides themselves are part of the altered item, including the projector, so it shouldn't be possible to destroy them. I feel like it was a lore mistake from Remedy. Or perhaps I'm wrong in thinking all altered items are indestructible. Because if they could be destroyed, then the duplicating clocks could have been fed to the furnace eliminating them as an issue, rather then blocking off that section of the oldest house.
It could be that the item is the projector, and the slides are more like a support gear to it, something that only can work with use of the projector, which is why they may be destroyable, as they have no power, not without the projector at least.
Wish there was like a sentence or 2 blurb about the oops she binds with and others along the way. Great video still though so excited for aw2
I enjoyed listening to your story. Much love from Vietnam. Cheers!
Another masterpiece
Wait the lines the Hiss say are from Alan Wake!?
Yep. "In one world, a writer wrote a Story about a cop. In another, the cop was real."
I dream a lot about hotels and stuff. In fact, I had one where Russians attacked and when I was running away, I opened a door where my boyfriends friend was sitting on the ground, crying, saying he "killed her." Turns out, he was involved in a hit and run that night (of the dream).
I can't wait for Alan Wake to come on Steam.
I have only 100% a handful of games and Control is one them. I have played Alan Wake but it's been over 10 years ago, I don't remember much of the storyline. So thanks for putting this video out. Now I'm planning to replay Control on PS5.
Dang these four videos were awesome
i love polaris. it's my fave part of the whole thing. that's probably obvious. but is. they have to make a movie about what happens to the to siblings later on. fingers crossed. :)
The names of characters and places are way more important than I think we realize. Blackrock (largest corrupt company in the world), Hedron (particle proton accelerator), Casper we never see like a ghost, ordinary, etc, etc…
Even Polaris is the north star used in navigation.
At first i thought the game was rubbish but im SO glad i pushed through. Such awesome lore
I always wondered why the symbol on Alan's Door was a spiral. One question answered and another takes its place
Well done. Great video. Going to look to see if you did the same for Alan Wake
Great overview. This game is fantastic.
Great content; comprehensive, but not overwhelming. Do you plan on covering Alan Wake's American Nightmare at some point? (Or has it been removed from canon since Control came out?)
From my understanding, American Nightmare is still technically "canon", however none of the events really influenced anything in the overarching story or the games universe. Though I could be wrong and someone can certainly correct me. I'm definitely no Lord of Lore or anything. So it probably won't be covered unless Alan Wake 2 makes specific references to those events, in which case it'll be brought up in that lore vid. 👌
Sam Lake said that it was canon, imo american nightmare was most important to flesh out mr scratch's character
Having played alan wake 2- other than an inconsequential reference or 2, there doesn't seem to be any tangible connection. A certain character in American Nightmare is in the Sequel, but it's done VERY differently, almost retconning American nightmare. Basically, the events of AW:AN were one of Alan's failed attempts to escape and it has little or no bearing at all on the larger story.
You have to remember; AW1 wasn't a massive financial success and was published my MS, so remedy prolly didn't think they'd have the opportunity to make a proper sequel, so they made AW:AN as sort of a consolation prize. Alan wake 2 only exists because remedy reclaimed the IP rights. And a good thing too, cuz AW2 is a masterpiece and the trippiest story ever.
@@VivaLaPigotry As far as I can tell having just replayed it, American Nightmare is either entirely a figment of Alan's imagination in the Dark Place, or one of his many failed attempts to escape in which Scratch is just tormenting Alan.
***SPOILERS FOR ALAN WAKE 2***
While the plot itself isn't quite like the rest of the series, there are too many recurring elements to be considered coincidence: the time-loop (that isn't a loop) mechanics and the rituals that affect them, Barry working for the Old Gods of Asgard after Alan's disappearance (which lines up with AW2's mentions of Barry), Alice making a film to try to save Alan, the final episode being titled 'Return', Alan/Scratch wearing the same checkered flannel shirt from American Nightmare when he finally escapes the lake in AW2... it's almost like a first draft of an escape attempt, like the story is too contrived and unrefined, its flow too unnatural for the Dark Place to allow it to work (it'll only work if it's good, well-told story according to AW2).
Whether or not American Nightmare is still considered canon, I think its parallels with AW2 are certainly worth factoring in to story analysis of the series as a whole.
@@SilentCard518 *Possible Spoiler warning(tho i keep it vague)* In consideration of the re-use of certain storytelling concepts, I accept your assertions. However, American nightmare cannot possibly considered "required reading," as all of those themes and character beats are themselves explained in due course in AW2- The time loop, the shirt he's wearing, Alice's movie/art exhibition, Barry working w/the old gods, even his innumerable escape attempts; its all covered very succinctly in part 2. Actually, to the point where I think it renders AN kind of irrelevant.
Your storytelling skills are spectacular
Just thinking about how out of jesses two jobs (director and janitors assistant) janitors assistant could arguably be the more important one
One could say the Director IS the janitorial assistant
I loved this game so much in the Nintendo switch version.
Back then I played this game with my friend that if we perish the other guy plays it. Like taking turns to play the game while exploring the lore.
So many memories. And yet so confusing. But thank you for explaining to lore to us. BECAUSE WE WERE CONFUSED LIKE A CAT IN A CARDBOARD BOX
Come for the scp vibes, stay for the actually really interesting and inspired but distinct lore.
watching this video after playing aw 2 is a bit eye opening. there’s so many references to AW2
That ending though 👽
