I never thought George would have been kind to steam engines at first, and had a rough life prior to the events of 'Steamroller'. The accident, being relegated to 2nd place, replaced by a new steamroller, his driver leaving him and left in a shed for 30 years. I never thought I'd say this, but... poor George. You've really outdone yourself again, Dan. Well done.
WELL, AS I SERIOUSLY DO ACTUALLY RECENTLY RECALL GEORGE THE STEAMROLLER'S ALWAYS SAYING RUDELY: RAILWAYS ARE NO GOOD, TURN 'EM INTO ROADS; PULL 'EM UP, TURN 'EM INTO ROADS! X2
Very insightful episode, I don't think anyone's ever done a story on why George hates railways so much. Interesting to have George spew out all his anger near the end, haha 2009 was a year for several unresolved issues to come to the floor :)
Colin, Lily and Adam in one episode!? Yes!! No seriously I’m a huge sucker for the W&S engines and their interpretations in Victor Tanzig’s series! Even though I know that you are the one that made them! As for the episode, it was great to see what caused George to hate the railway. Great job!
You know what i like about your stories? You take something that already exists and then give it a proper back story, like you did in Bad Apple in season 3, that time you explained how Diesel got the names for the engines, "old square wheels, rusty red scrap iron and galloping sausage", and i thought that was brilliant and you've done it again. Fantastic!
It's so odd rewatching this series and seeing all the different ways these characters act. Having not watched in years, I've gotten used to Victor Tanzig's version of Sodor. Wildnorwester was one of the OG's
When Colin said to George you expect us engines to be able to jump the tracks so we can clear for steam rollers I said well you can apparently thanks to AEG.
I like Colin and Adam. They're really good characters, and I like how they tried to make George see sense, but to no avail. I hope we see more scenes of them again in the future.
***** Adding onto that comment, I thought that most of the older engines were scrapped and only Neil and Lilly survived. Flashbacks prehaps, or did The Fat Director have a few more tricks up his sleeve? Speaking of which, I really like The Fat Director in this series. He never struck me as all that competent in the RWS, but in this series while still being on the bureaucratic, greedy, pompous and rather lazy side, he's also been shown to be caring, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, firm but fair, a good family man and willing to go against his fellow directors to do the right thing. Like when he helped save Neil and Lilly from being scrapped. I hope we see more stories about his tenure.
+WildNorWester You are saying, we will learn about theirs and Lily's lives on the Wellsworth & Suddery railway? Also, will we learn about Lily's mourning for losing Colin and Adam when she escaped Cronk's Scrapyard?
Love the episode great work using gorge as the main character. Hope to see one on bulgy or possibly smudger from the narrow gauge and a narrow gauge episode featuring like Christopher awdrey visiting the railway
Great episode. I have always been intrigued by George, and this is a interesting and well-executed explanation for why he harbors so much hatred towards railways. It's a pity about Colin and Adam's end, as they seemed like fine engines.
***** Oh, and one thing I've noticed about the episode...why was George so close to the line in the first place when he had his accident with Colin? Surely the workmen/his driver would have enough common sense to keep him away from the tracks, even if he was helping the workmen?
emfarce It takes place on a dock, which are usually long and narrow. George was between the rails and ocean, so there wasn't that much room to begin with.
Huh, so I guess it really wasn't his fault then. His attitude is what lead to all the problems obviously. Colin was kind of wrong then in saying George should have been clear, if there wasn't a lot of room overall.
"He [Adam] knew how ongoing arguments could effect the running of a railway." Ooh... I wonder if Adam tried to pacify the argument with Henry and Lily before he was scrapped. Oh, Adam, if only you could talk sense into Lily now...
well that explains a bit good episode the last two were amazing as well as "Rough Start" i did not comment on the last one or Rough Start because i was not really able to but still letting you know every episode you do is amazing my friend
10:32 What was that word? This is a great episode that really goes deep into George's rollers and why he hates railways. And looking back at this and Victor Tanzig, I like seeing Adam and Colin with different voice actors. Somehow, I feel George will be turned into a museum piece again or a boiler.
Good explanation for the grudge. Nice explanation of economy in the depression. Not many people about who remember or really know about it. George would have been steamed. (Pardon the pun) Seems he also wanted to be really useful and reliable. Sad that the accident caused him so much trouble.
Oh yeah, I thought Thomas and percy were about he same size; "little tank engines". Your design makes Thomas larger than percy. He seems a little boxy too, instead of rounded like percy.
This episode is quite insightful to George's personality, great work WNW. I imagine it might've been based off of the fact that George always seemed to disregard railway safety, like traveling near a running engine, or leaving a cone on the line, right? By the way, what word did Thomas use to describe George's rant? I heard "carth" something.
@@WildNorWestersorry that was me when I was a bit immature, I’m better now and have found a few series where he survives. In fact my series I want to make has Adam as one of the most important characters
I like that you took an attempt to expand on Georges character. Fair enough in a more common scenario that road and railway companies do try to outdo each-other in reality; so it's natural that vehicles could inherit the same chain of thought (generally public transport) but it's better still to try something different. I like the approach you took with George; initially friendly to railways but an unforeseen circumstance changed his view on them :)
It struck me that most of the road vehicles (Trevor, Bertie, Terence) don't seem to actually be hostile towards railways. Friendly rivalry (like Bertie) maybe, but not the outright hostility of George or Bulgy.
Yeah. Interestingly if vehicles were alive in real life. Over here in Northern Ireland; well the trains and buses are owned by the same company (translink) so it would be hard to imagine them having a go at eachother for anything besides friendly rivalry :)
***** Well, it makes sense for Terence and Trevor, since neither of them are in any kind of competition with the railway and in Trevor's case, he actively benefits from the railway and was saved because of it, too. Terence also gets work from the railway from time to time (like when Thomas got stuck in the snow) but is otherwise just your average tractor... Hm, you know I must wonder how Terence could survive over the years given how obsolete he'd be by STMY. Bertie was a bit more of a jerk when he first met Thomas, too. So he's probably not like other buses in that regard. Thinking of other non-maligned road vehicles, Caroline is too humbled by her frequent overheating to have any kind of pride over steam engines. Any other road vehicles I can think of that appear in the RWS either weren't anthropomorphised or simply didn't have any role to indicate their personalities.
***** It wasn't the railways that locked him up - it was his owners. This accident, caused by the railway, was why they did that. Also, there's the accident itself - he can't see the point of something that, from his point of view, can't avoid an accident. Road vehicles are 'better' because they can get out of the way.
According to my calculations, in this series, we don't have an exact year for when the MSR closed (Season 1 takes place in the 1960s-1970s), and season 2 picks up in 1981. So, the years could range from 2-21.
***** Wildnorwester told me on his series wikia that the dates of those episodes take place on the dates they should be, ex. Diesel arriving in 1967 instead of 1981, that's when the Arlesdale Railway was opened, so Duke can still be on the sheds up to 1969.
Lily has the exact same wheel configuration as Edward, just back to front lol. And speaking of Edward, he’s not a Furness Railway K2, he’s actually an LNER D40.
Another nice episode from you again, cheers to you and your marvelous efforts once again! Though if I may ask you one thing: why did you use Edward's old shape combined with his new tender?
Edward's new shape is the result of several upgrades, minor rebuilds, etc. over time. Hence, his 'new shape' isn't the result of one incident, but several changes over time. As for the tender, Edward has had a Fowler tender since 'The Three Railway Engines', and so I'm assuming his Furness Railway tender was replaced shortly after his arrival.
Interesting. I would've thought Edward was rebuilt and upgraded at one time, whilst being given his Fowler tender and enclosed cab at the same time. I heard from somewhere that this might've happened around 1920 or 21 when he was "officially" bought by the NWR, but neither TIOS or RBTL give any details on this as far as I'm aware of. I may have heard it from Brian Sibley's book "The Thomas the Tank Engine Man," but I currently don't have that volume at my disposal for the moment.
***** I think the Fowler tender was first built in 1924, while the first book takes place in 1923, only that the illustrator put him with the Fowler tender. Just giving a hand :)
You know what wi be weird if the fat controller decided to build a engine designed as james and had the same design as Winston as the work was finished the engines memories from Winston's incident comes back into that loco I mean that will be fucked up and cons fused as HELL XD
WildNorWester I was just thinking, perhaps you can reupload Winds Of Change in your grand new models. It can repair auditory mistakes such as Thomas and Henry as well.
I get what you're saying, but I won't be remaking any of my earlier episodes. Also, Winds of Change took a full two weeks non-stop of filming, editing, etc, over a Christmas holiday.
@@WildNorWester I understand that George was based on a Aveling and Porter steam roller built in the 1920s owned by Teddy Boston a good friend of the Rev Wilbert Awdry but in the RWS and the tv series he is clearly based on a later steam roller design built by a similar company. while this all right this does not suit his origin story in your episode. I understand it not exactly known what year George was built?
I keep moving the porters and guards onto the platforms but they are way too high and when I try to lower then, they go under the platform. How do you center them directly on the platform?
NWR 1914 If you hold down the 'Ctrl' and 'Shift' keys while adjusting the height, it gives you finer control - one allows you to move them in 5cm increments, the other in 10cm increments.

For perhaps the next season or so if you make it that far, ask him about Timothy. Until kanrfan701 told it, Timothy's story was never revealed. George would be very frightened if he saw Timothy and might let go of his grudge. Timothy knows holding grudges is bad, he held one against the old controller and it cost him his life
1931? George? Wait, that's all wrong. George didn't arrive on Sodor in 1931, the Bio of the "Railway Series" said that he came in 1962. I mean I know this is fiction, I even get the point of him being left in a shed for 30 years in this video he said, but the bio of how it all happened for George entering Sodor too early seemed wrong.
Um, the first known encounter between him and the trains was in 1962. He's a model of steamroller which was built in the 1920s, and so wouldn't be new in 1962 at all.
its a interesting episode and shows how George became a angry roller and it was cool seeing the W&S engines shown i mean apart from lily makes me think what new ideas you can come up with as long as its better then the Hit entertainment crap
WildNorWester, you know I enjoy and respect your work; but you know how I am on strong language. I'm not saying I don't like the whole episode because of some language, I'm saying that I've noticed more and more language appearing in your "newest" series. I thought that STMY was going to be something really exciting, I hope you can keep up the standard you had us expecting us to see.
Firstly, I'd like to point out that the Railway Series (especially 'Enterprising Engines') also had strong language in it. Secondly, out of 73 episodes, 2 feature-length specials and 1 mini-series, I've used the word 'bloody' twice. Because of this, you're saying my series is slipping? More and more? Are you sure we're watching the same series? In both cases, I used that word for impact, nothing more.
***** I haven't seen George Carlin, worse Billy Connolly. All I'm saying is that I don't like watching shows that have strong language in them. And for the record, your AMAZING writing skills have surely made up for "strong language".
***** Fine, I'll say it straight out: My moral beliefs get a little shaken every time I hear bad words. Although "bloody" may not be one of them, I still get a little shaken. I know that there are other people out there who say worse things; all I'm saying is I don't like hearing bad words. I'm not saying that you've got to remove that language from your episodes, all I'm saying is that the way you write your stories is a little more "mature" than mine, that's all. And BTW. when I watch your stories, it makes me respect those who put so much effort into them. Even the type of conflicts the characters may have.
the great depression impacted the entire world: global markets put money into All Street and the crash bankrupted whole national treasuries. it also helped cause WWII by economic crisis in Germany and Japan, which allowed Hitler to come to power in Germany and pushed for overseas occupation of territory for Japan.
As a famous reporter stated at the time of the depression "when america sneezes, the world catches a cold". Its affects were felt all over. Given the boom, when theirs a boom their is always a bust to follow after.
Nice to see you turning George into a sympathetic villain.
He's not a villain, he's rather an antagonist.
I never thought George would have been kind to steam engines at first, and had a rough life prior to the events of 'Steamroller'. Not gonna lie, if I was in George’s situation I’d probably see myself hating railways as well
3:28 in the background besides Edward, what is that locomotive in the background pulling a goods train called or named may I ask why?
I think it's Gordon
Colby James It's Henry. During the late 1920s/early 1930s he was painted blue - this is in the RWS.

I hope we get more 'flashbacks' in season 2! :D

1961 actually, Awdry stated it. But yeah, he wouldn't be new at that time.

its a interesting episode and shows how George became a angry roller and it was cool seeing the W&S engines shown i mean apart from lily makes me think what new ideas you can come up with as long as its better then the Hit entertainment crap
'Bloody' isn't exactly strong language. Have you seen George Carlin or Billy Connolly at all? That's strong language.
***** I haven't seen George Carlin, worse Billy Connolly. All I'm saying is that I don't like watching shows that have strong language in them. And for the record, your AMAZING writing skills have surely made up for "strong language".
My point is, your tolerance for 'bad language' seems to be extremely low compared to everyone else.
Isn't the Great Depression an American thing
It started in the United States in 1929, then the economic effects spread to the rest of the world through most of the 1930s.
the great depression impacted the entire world: global markets put money into All Street and the crash bankrupted whole national treasuries. it also helped cause WWII by economic crisis in Germany and Japan, which allowed Hitler to come to power in Germany and pushed for overseas occupation of territory for Japan.
As a famous reporter stated at the time of the depression "when america sneezes, the world catches a cold". Its affects were felt all over. Given the boom, when theirs a boom their is always a bust to follow after.
Great episode and I have never seen this episode before but I don’t like George tho 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
