Walking through a craft fair, my wife commented positively about these rings. My tinker brain said I can do this. Her birthday was coming up so perfect. I got a small dessert spoon (925 sterling silver), cut it, and slowly hammered it into shape. Beautifully polished, gave it to my wife and I was the talk of her social circle. Fast forward 10 months and we are hosting a group of friends for dinner. My kids are setting the table and one of them tells my wife that we were short one small spoon. She immediately made the connection and boy did I get an earful. To make matters worst, that silverware pattern had been discontinued for decades and can’t find a replacement. My wife bought a super cheap plastic set that she uses for my table setting when we are hosting as my penance. To this day, whenever silverware is involved, I am the talk of her social circle. Great video but make sure you don’t use your wife’s good silverware.
Lol well yeah that wasn't a good idea to use something that was her's without asking about it. I've told people in the past that brought up their grandparents or parents have a ton of this kind of silverware and I tell them not to use it without asking them or go by some just for this. 👍
You can put a video of the piece and maybe you can find a replacement! Also there is a place in Wisconsin that has replacement for most silver sets. Good luck!!
Although I won't be able to pursue ring-making, your video is an absolute delight. It is so very interesting and you are an excellent teacher. Thank you for your time and effort sharing this.
I love spoon rings! They were very popular in the 70’s, and have made a come back. My son gave me several pieces of old silverware years ago, and some would make really pretty rings. I did get a civil war era fork that is so cool, but I won’t be using it. Lol
Love this ❤❤! Didn't know a ring bender existed, always did it by hand with heat, hammer and mandrel. Sure cuts the time in half & definitely better tool to use living in apartments that would seriously frown on fire use. Gonna have to check out your other videos, thx again for sharing!
My daughter is just getting into jewelry crafting. She has actually sold a few dozen pieces online and to friends. For Christmas I bought her quite a few tools. Tapping block set, ring pliers, a polished block anvil and assorted hammers, eyelet forming pliers and about 500 assorted Drexel/die grinder and polishing bits. The ring bender is very nice. Good video. I feel like we’re pretty similar in skill. I have a studio at home too. If you wanna connect, let me know. As for the patina rainbow color, it’ll turn dark over time just like leaving it in the LoS for for longer . You have to spray it with a clear coating to keep the air from further oxidizing it. It’s similar to flame coloring but most jewelers dont want to apply a clear coat because it changes the feel of the metal.
Ty for posting such an amazing video. I am glad to see that there’s teachers out there that aren’t taking advantage of everybody as far as buy this buy that and I’ll show you. That’s awesome of you. I’ve been making jewelry for almost 17 years and never thought about doing jewelry out of silver. I have a huge box of solid silver silverware that was left to me by my grandmother. I’m not sure if I want to sell the box or make rings or earrings out of them!?!! But I’m very glad to come across this video because it shows me the markings that I needed to look for on my silverware or if when I’m going to the flea markets or goodwill stores. I know you’ve posted this video over a year ago it came up on my feed, and I’m now a fan and a sub! BTW, your voice makes it easy to follow and as thorough as you can make it! Awesome video as always!! There is also a tool you can buy for about $80 that attaches to a 1 ton arbor press to bend the silverware rings. It works really good too and then you can also use the arbor press (without ring bending attachment) for stamping!! 😁 LOVE THE 🌈!!!! 💖
I have found sterling that was not marked more times than I could count at yard sales and thrift stores often people put it with the cheaper stuff because it isn't marked...I have gotten to where I can pretty much tell by the feel of it but I always confirm with my little test kit. I get silverware for less than a dollar apiece if it is unmarked..I dont feel this is deceptive ..I have the forethought to test it...people who are selling this stuff should do the same. ..like you mentioned it is much heavier..also the old silver has pockmarks as silver is quite soft and gets dents and dings over time! Great video!
Great video. Easy to follow, no silly chitchat, concise and to the point. Loved your video, have subscribed! Plan to start with spoon rings, bracelets then…who knows!
You are a really good teacher! Very thorough! I would like to see some more of your work. I am just now getting into jewelery making / metalsmithing. Thanks again!
I have a very old sterling silver tea spoon that I want to make into a ring. In the 70s a guy at a Flea market made spoon rings while you waited. I had one with my initial on it that I really loved. Unfortunately someone stole all my jewelry and I'd love to have another one. I love silver sterling silver I don't think gold looks good on my skin if I have gold it has to be white gold. I really prefer silver though. Loved your video!
Lovely tutorial, very rich content, many thanks, Randy! One way to dispose of Liver of Sulphur - let it sit open air till it turns white, then pour it on your tomatoes. They love sulphur minerals. Once it is white, it becomes inert. Bet those rainbow rings would look cool if you polished up only the raised pattern and left the rainbow effect on the rest of the ring. Very lovely finish!
I like to buy my own birthday gifts, and was going to buy a ring bender. Unfortunately some reviews said they aren’t good for spoon bending, so I opted for a handheld ring bender, and some tools to go with it. If I end up really taking an interest in this I guess I’ll get a ring bender later.
I have been buying silverware and silverplate for 5 or so years at garage sales and flea mkts. I recently bought a 3 drawer silver chest at a rerun store,, for 49.00. It wasn't very old but it was beautiful with very delicate butterflies and flowers and it had 3 different partial sets of flatware. One was 16 pcs, silverplate from the 40's, one was 30 pcs, sterling silver from the 40's and one was 18 pcs, very modern stainless from Walmart. Most of the spoons were missing. All of the butter knives were there. Odd, I thought.
I make spoon rings back in the early 70’s and would sell them at a market in San Jose California I would make more money selling the rings on the weekend than I did on my good paying job where I worked all week what a great time that was and the silverware was an easy fine at the time
Hey I have a request, in light of recent news developments. I saw on your website you have experience with Steampunk design, and I would like to request that you create a themed youtube series on Steampunk design for jewelry and possibly other constructions. It is a very cool genre and I think many would find it interesting, and would find YOUR point of view on it interesting. Further, the Gamestop thing going on in the metal market is currently artificially jacking the price of silver right now and this seems like a great time to focus on designing finished work with copper, brass, bronze, aluminum, found objects, etc until the craziness calms down and gets back to normal. What do you think? .
Lucky I stocked up on silver way before this craziness that's going on so I have a long to work with still. I do understand that others might not be in the same boat. I will think about the steampunk thing but to be honest right now I'm gearing up for some casting videos. 😁
You can use 14k acid as well. You just drop it directly on the item. It's what we do at the store I work at. We're usually testing for scrap purchases so it doesn't matter to us if it leaves a mark. Both methods work. Just depends on the application :-)
You are definitely a math wiz! You didn't even need to break out a calculator to know instantly how much the total was when multiplying by pi! I envy you! I've been math challenged all my life! Would love to see more using the forks! : )
Lol thanks and yeah that does make it look like I'm able to do math like nothing but really I did all the math before hand on my phone and have it off screen 😁👍
@@GomeowCreations That makes me feel a little better! But you are still better at math than me. I appreciate you always showing the formula or equation. Repetition is the only thing that makes it stick in my head!
im so happy i somehow stumbled across this video. what a beautiful, beautiful art form! wow! i have so many pieces of silverware that were passed down to me from family members, this is such a lovely way of being able to keep those with you all the time. these are gorgeous!
Im so glad I found you! Ive got a pretty good collection of sterling silver (some sets but a lot of odds n ends) i make wind chimes mainly for friends but well obviously I either need more friends or another project to get into. You're very informative... Thank you. And an added bonus is I don't see any political talk whatsoever in your comment section. LOL so refreshing. Keep the videos coming I will be binge watching you. Thanks again
Thanks for this fantastic tutorial .I am a complete novice at spoon ring making and you have inspired me to per-Sue this hobby. Can you describe what you use to heat up stainless spoons? Will I not cause the spoon to turn a glossy blue black if I heat it with a blow torch?
Sterling silver is 925, quite often you will have cutlery with an alloying of 800 which still should work. I only knew that you can use this liver liquid to make steel look rusty. That is a great idea!
Love this video! I've watched it before and decided to return and make some rainbow spoon rings. So I cannot afford the Pepe tools bender so I put my steel mandrel into my bench vice and hammer mind around that. Takes longer but works fine. I need your bale stencil maker!
This video convinced me to start making jewelry, and it was posted only one day before I had the idea 😅 Thanks for going over everything I needed to know and the process!
I never thought of doing something like this, I have a huge dessert spoon and fork that belonged to my family but I'll never actually use. My cutlery is a bit big to turn into a ring but this is such a good idea for sentimental or mismatched silverware
Very interesting….years,…..I mean a lot of years ago, when I was a child, my Father made a spoon ring, it was pretty….I always was curious as to how he did it…..Now I know…thank you for the explanation video. 👍🏼👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼
I do a rainbow coat by putting cast sterling into a jar with an egg yolk, it works best on castings with a degree of micropouroisity the thing about both egg and LoS is it can wear off eventually with handling
Yeah it will wear off eventually over time but it's very easy to get it back if you want it. 😁 The egg thing does also work seeing that it contains sulfur. It's just easier for me to have los on hand 👍
I don’t know if you are familiar with her, but Suzanne Angle of Flatwearable Creations has a tool that’s used with an arbor press that makes these rings without kinks. You can also make bracelets with her tool. She has a UA-cam channel, as well. Also, I use that LOS for copper, but I’ve never been able to get those colors with my silver pieces. Great informative demo, Randy 👍🏼👏🏻
Fantastic video - so informative and articulate! Hopefully someone reading this will be able to answer me: Can I use a rubber hammer instead of a cowhide? Thanks in advance 🙂
Excellent video! I’m new to this and have been doing it the hard way and can see how much easier it is when you invest in the proper equipment . Thank you!
AWESOME. TY SOO MUCH. I HAVE A FACINATION WITH RE~PURPOSING SILVERWARE. : } I HAVE MADE MANY CROSSES. SOME BIG SERVING SPOONS I RUBBER MALLETED THE SPOON END FLAT, ROLLED IT, DRILLED A HIDDEN HOLE TO HANG THE CROSS . I'VE MADE BRACELETTES. SOME WERE 2 PIECES, LINKED WITH A BEAD FLOWER IN FRONT & CHAIN & LOBSTER CLAW CLASP IN BACK. ALL GIVEN AWAY AS GIFTS. : }
Well I just made a ring out of a stainless steel tea spoon and all you really need is a hammer of a decent size and something round like a big old bolt around 1" thick/finger size and a way to secure the bolt or whatever to a sturdy table. A few small files too are good to clean up rough edges. These are just the things you need for hobby level though.
Hey Randy, could you please go into more detail to explain how to correctly size a wide band ring such as the spiral spoon ring in this video. I’m having trouble finding info about this anywhere. My issue is making a custom wide band ring for a (eg) size 7 finger that will properly fit a person I’ve never met. Where on that spiral band would you expect it to sit on the 7 size on your mandrel. I have also seen designers advertise that their wide band ring is a 7.5 and will fit a 7 or 7.25. Could you please consider doing a video on all these wide band sizing issues and perhaps anything else you might know of that would help.. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Your videos are great. I've been watching them before committing to a new hobby. I'm wondering if there's a ring bending machine you suggest, and also what should you look for in a quality machine?
I saw someone use sockets (for fixing your car) to shape rings around. Thanks for these tips, I've had a fork sitting on my work table for years crying out to me to turn it into a ring
I just bought $100 bender kit and other tools from Amazon. They arrived today. I understand your math but how do I know what number round tool and half round tool to use in the bender for each size ring to bend?

I have found sterling that was not marked more times than I could count at yard sales and thrift stores often people put it with the cheaper stuff because it isn't marked...I have gotten to where I can pretty much tell by the feel of it but I always confirm with my little test kit. I get silverware for less than a dollar apiece if it is unmarked..I dont feel this is deceptive ..I have the forethought to test it...people who are selling this stuff should do the same.
..like you mentioned it is much heavier..also the old silver has pockmarks as silver is quite soft and gets dents and dings over time! Great video!
That's awesome and thanks 😊
Wonderful instruction, not too much inane chatter. Three thumbs up! Now, I'd like to see the silver rings. Thank you. Cynthia
I make spoon rings back in the early 70’s and would sell them at a market in San Jose California I would make more money selling the rings on the weekend than I did on my good paying job where I worked all week what a great time that was and the silverware was an easy fine at the time
Love this method! I will try it, I only need a rawhide mallet. I will post when I do!
@GomeowCreations well, you know the rule, plan your work, and work your plan. Still, it is an idea for the future.
@GomeowCreations I would definitely watch that series if you decide to make it
Really great video for beginners...thank you for showing us the steps your a great teacher and artist.....
You can use 14k acid as well. You just drop it directly on the item. It's what we do at the store I work at. We're usually testing for scrap purchases so it doesn't matter to us if it leaves a mark. Both methods work. Just depends on the application :-)
Great video in every possible way. And now I really do understand Liver of Sulphur.
😁👍
You are definitely a math wiz! You didn't even need to break out a calculator to know instantly how much the total was when multiplying by pi! I envy you! I've been math challenged all my life! Would love to see more using the forks! : )
Lol thanks and yeah that does make it look like I'm able to do math like nothing but really I did all the math before hand on my phone and have it off screen 😁👍
@@GomeowCreations That makes me feel a little better! But you are still better at math than me. I appreciate you always showing the formula or equation. Repetition is the only thing that makes it stick in my head!
Haha no problem and it's very simple once you understand how it all works.
Thanks, great, great tutorial! I made 5 rings for the first. Cut the right sizes, but not the the right sizes when done😄
im so happy i somehow stumbled across this video. what a beautiful, beautiful art form! wow! i have so many pieces of silverware that were passed down to me from family members, this is such a lovely way of being able to keep those with you all the time. these are gorgeous!
😁👍
It is fascinating to see jewellery making. I love it.
😁
Thanks for this fantastic tutorial .I am a complete novice at spoon ring making and you have inspired me to per-Sue this hobby. Can you describe what you use to heat up stainless spoons? Will I not cause the spoon to turn a glossy blue black if I heat it with a blow torch?
Sterling silver is 925, quite often you will have cutlery with an alloying of 800 which still should work.
I only knew that you can use this liver liquid to make steel look rusty. That is a great idea!
Thanks for the info!
Love this video! I've watched it before and decided to return and make some rainbow spoon rings. So I cannot afford the Pepe tools bender so I put my steel mandrel into my bench vice and hammer mind around that. Takes longer but works fine. I need your bale stencil maker!
I'm happy to hear that you liked the video and here is a link to my shop if you're looking for stuff bit.ly/GomeowCreationsShop
Love this, yes need to see the Sterling video please! Thanks!
This video convinced me to start making jewelry, and it was posted only one day before I had the idea 😅 Thanks for going over everything I needed to know and the process!
Thank you so much for walking through the details.
No problem 😁
BRILLIANT..I'm so happy to have found you!
Thanks 😁👍
Beautiful workmanship
Thank you 😊
I never thought of doing something like this, I have a huge dessert spoon and fork that belonged to my family but I'll never actually use.
I do a rainbow coat by putting cast sterling into a jar with an egg yolk, it works best on castings with a degree of micropouroisity
the thing about both egg and LoS is it can wear off eventually with handling
Yeah it will wear off eventually over time but it's very easy to get it back if you want it. 😁
The egg thing does also work seeing that it contains sulfur. It's just easier for me to have los on hand 👍
Great video!
Informative and simple!
My last name is Sterling and I love making jewelry for my daughter
Well thank you and that's an interesting last name 😁👍
Thank you for all the details/expert advice
No problem
I don’t know if you are familiar with her, but Suzanne Angle of Flatwearable Creations has a tool that’s used with an arbor press that makes these rings without kinks. You can also make bracelets with her tool. She has a UA-cam channel, as well. Also, I use that LOS for copper, but I’ve never been able to get those colors with my silver pieces. Great informative demo, Randy 👍🏼👏🏻
I will look into that thank you.
Fantastic video - so informative and articulate! Hopefully someone reading this will be able to answer me: Can I use a rubber hammer instead of a cowhide? Thanks in advance 🙂
Yes you can
Excellent video! I’m new to this and have been doing it the hard way and can see how much easier it is when you invest in the proper equipment . Thank you!
Yeah using the right tools does make a job a lot easier. 😁👍
Very informative and helpful! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for this video- I love the details on testing and which measurements are going to work best!
😊👍
nice video, but i thought it was going to be for someone who didn't have all the gadgets. thank you for sharing your talent.
Love the rainbow finish!
So beautiful! I love this i love this i love this...my birthday is May 27th.
Happy birthday sophie!! God bless.🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂😘👍🏻👍🏻👏👏👏🙏🙏
AWESOME. TY SOO MUCH. I HAVE A FACINATION WITH RE~PURPOSING SILVERWARE. : } I HAVE MADE MANY CROSSES. SOME BIG SERVING SPOONS I RUBBER MALLETED THE SPOON END FLAT, ROLLED IT, DRILLED A HIDDEN HOLE TO HANG THE CROSS . I'VE MADE BRACELETTES. SOME WERE 2 PIECES, LINKED WITH A BEAD FLOWER IN FRONT & CHAIN & LOBSTER CLAW CLASP IN BACK. ALL GIVEN AWAY AS GIFTS. : }
The best presentation ever.! Now how do I get one of those ring bender? Please? Greetings from Australia.
Thanks and here is the link to it bit.ly/PepeRingBender this will ship from the USA to Australia but I don't know how much shipping would be.
Loved this video! Super informative and I learned so much. Thank you. Can you do one on how to make spoon bracelets. Please 😄
This is so useful! Thank you for taking the time to explain in so much detail. 😊
No problem ☺️👍
Wow, this is great. Thank you, am going to give this a go soon.
Thanks and let me know out it turns out 😁👍
This takes me back to middle school and high school.
I spent 2 hours trying to bend a steel spoon with a player and my bare hands. I get it now thank you
😁👍
What an excellent video! I love spoon jewelry and have a few pieces from an artist from providence RI
New respect for the process.
Thanks so much for your time and shares with us all your techniques, we really appreciate its
Excellent & informative video!! Your great teacher & I love that it’s ALL informative thank you!
I just bought $100 bender kit and other tools from Amazon. They arrived today. I understand your math but how do I know what number round tool and half round tool to use in the bender for each size ring to bend?
Yea I wanted to know this why he used a 16 rather than A diffrent size it wasn’t explained did I work this out ?
The algorithm has been hitting me hard this week lol that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you 😊
How so and thank you 😁👍
Your channel is amazing man! You deserve more recognition
Well thanks 😁👍
if you anneal steal or stainless steal you can bend it and use it. It is an easy process to which you can reharden it, even blue or anodize it to specific colors to your liking
Enjoyed very much. Love to see more.
10:00 multiply diameter by 3.14 to get ring circumference translated to length
Awesome video, thanks for sharing ⭐️
😁
I just finish 2 dozen Stainless steel spoon rings . So yes you can use SS flatware its just much harder to work with but its doable.
Oh yeah you definitely can make rings from stainless steel ones but like you said they're much harder to shape but it is doable.
Very useful! A good video to learn from. Thanks for making and sharing. 😎👍🏾
I would love to see how you do a sterling silver piece! I just found your channel and I love it 🥰
Thank for sharing i will now collect silver spoons forks etc
Best of luck
Very informative for a newbie like me
Can you show how to stamp into the left over fork out spoon piece? To make cheese labels or plant labels for the garden?
