Agreed, I was foolish and never protected my ears. I lost most of my left hearing 9 years ago, the right one is touch and go.
Now I'm always protecting what I have left.

I've always played drums as a moonlighting, part-time jazz musician. Fortunately, almost all of it has been with low volume groups and no hearing protection was needed.
For the serious side of hearing loss, my primary job was work in an industrial environment where hearing protection is a must and ear plugs or ear muffs were required along with regular instructions for the importance of using them and taking annual hearing tests.
For myself, the good news is that I kept my all of my hearing until I retired. The bad news is that my second round with Covid left me with 10% hearing in my left ear and 50% hearing in my right ear. I wear hearing aids now. My audiologist told me that many of his patients have also experienced this.
Back to my main message. Protect your hearing! I can't emphasize this enough. When you lose your hearing, it's gone forever. It will not return.

Yep- use hearing protectors . Friend lost 40% of her hearing at one show as a result of years of exposure . Drums can put out 130 Db , like a gunshot . I’ve had tinnitus for 40 years , it drives some people crazy . Wear headphones if needed - actually you can hear better onstage as it cuts alot of highs - and you may be be in line with the speakers as well .

A lot of beginners, even seasoned players don’t realize the danger their exposed to until it’s too late .
When I see videos of Keith Moon wearing headphones on stage it makes me think that he was starting to have hearing loss , maybe that precipitated his suicide . I was exposed to a lot of loud shows from working and being in bands from the 70-80s when it was popular to be loud and the loss of hearing was just starting to dawn on players . My friend was bass player from the Contraction,

I always use 33db foamies. Always have.
Yep, drums are just simply too loud to not use the ear plugs that cut the most sound out. The others will delay hearing loss but not stop it. Nothing is better than the foamies.
