Love all your videos!
After mastering this, the beginning drummer should try experimenting with areas on the cymbal where the stick lands, how hard the stick hits, which direction the stick is coming from (straight down, side sweeps, etc., types of sticks and tips) and anything else that comes to mind. So many beginners think there is only one way to play the ride. There are dozens of ways of doing it and experimenting with them is actually fun. Then there are the types of ride cymbals, crash/ride cymbals, and crash cymbals. Sometimes, I feel like a mad scientist in his lab when I do this.
Then you MUST consider the other members of the band. You don't want the cymbal's volume, wash, roar, hum or anything else to drown out the other instruments. I still like to ask them how I sound to them and ask for suggestions, even though I've been playing soft jazz for many decades.
So much to consider. This may seem overwhelming to the beginner, but the end results are worth it.
You speaketh truth my friend! Yes, to all of the above. For drummers just starting out, I just focus on the fundamentals but I hope beginning Jazz drummers everywhere will also read your comment. "Sound" advice. 🤙
