BAYNES SOUND - BC Ferries is receiving more criticism today about how it decommissions its older vessels, this time from a consultant preparing a retired vessel for scrapping. Doug Lotoski is a retired transporter, converter and salvager of vessels and is now consulting for a company in Ensenada, Mexico, a firm which previously salvaged the Queen of Saanich. His client has just purchased the Queen of Vancouver after the vessel had been previously sold to another firm by BC Ferries but then ran into financial difficulties.
Lotoski said changes are needed to the way BC Ferries disposes of old vessels and the company needs to ensure buyers have the financial and planning abilities to properly dispose of them. He also questions why the vessels are being abandoned by the company with so many valuable assets still on board them.
The Queen of Vancouver has been anchored in Baynes Sound part way between Fanny Bay and Denman Island since Friday and will undergo two weeks of work before it can be towed by tug boat down to Mexico.
