- Imagine an island so secluded there's no electricity, there are no paved roads and in many cases, no plumbing. That island - called Lasqueti - is home to 400 people and less than an hour away from Vancouver.16x9 traveled there to see what it's like to live off the grid.
The 83 year old man was very healthy and agile. If we could all be as fortunate. It would be nice if they do a follow-up on these folks.
That man is my brothers father and he is still living on the island doing the same thing only a little bit smaller now but still very healthy.

he was born with great genes like my brother. He is slower and smaller now though as he is starting to show signs of his age. It happens to the best of us. But he is still on the lsland and still physically outworks most of us ten times over. Except Alan my brother who is just like him i think.
we all make great homemade beer because him. When you self sufficient you know a lot.

This story had such potential. What a cool place to explore, and instead the reporter can't seem to grasp life without a hairdryer. And who did the ridiculous soundtrack?? There's an 83-year-old man chopping wood and living in a two-story house he built himself, yet his interview is set to music intended to sound buffoonish. Pretty understandable why some of the residents don't like outsiders.
They need some Ben Fogle. He always makes the best videos on these, and it's obvious he understands the people he visits and wants to live like they do. All the other videos/docus I've seen, present off griders and homesteaders like backwards nutcases.

The reporting didn't do anything wrong. This is new to her, she got an assignment, and she gave it a good go of it. You can't blame someone for not being on board with something immediately, whether they get on with it eventually or not. This is what I was afraid of, it was nice video showing an alternative lifestyle, and then you have the elite ass down here trying to gate keep or shun people who like the modern amenities of life. Also, it wasn't the reporter that had the hair dryer, it was that one lady and her husband.

Spent a weekend end on the island - lived in Parksville at the time- 1974 - Camped on lake . Never forgot - One of a kind ! Thanks - brought back great memories.
ive learned a lot of thing in my life by living like this long time ago,even chopping/cutting woods,i even learned to caught fish by using a basket sometimes even by hands,etc. its so wonderful,simple and beautiful to live like this,even we dont have money,we are happy...now it makes me feel a little sad coz i miss my grandmas and my life like that before long time ago :( but im still thankful for everything,especially for the air that im breathing,this beautiful nature and people i see everyday :)

Modern life tends to make us soft. I still heat my home with wood cut from my land and it does help to keep me fit.

I had heard of Lasqueti and have enjoyed visits to its larger and electrified neighbour, Texada. Nice to see it, but an hour from Vancouver? Unless you are a crow or use a fast boat, not. I had the good fortune to stumble onto the Kootenays in the nineteen seventies and got a taste of a similar lifestyle. Living without electricity or indoor plumbing is different when you are surrounded by others doing the same thing. The main feeling I recall from the tipi and off grid cabin years is a wonderful sense of FREEDOM. I am a lazy old woman on grid now, but still on the land and gardening my brains out. Thanks to the islanders for allowing this glimpse. In case of civilisational collapse they have an advantage. Though some of those large dogs would have to go before they run out of sheep and go all Cujo....
Someone who lives in Vancouver near City Hall (the reporter) is pretty naïve if she's never heard of ALL the big islands between the mainland and Vancouver Island. It's been awhile since I've been there. Some things are the same as 40 years ago and technology has really changed some aspects. There's no denying that the fine ladies of the island are the one's who are the movers and shakers (in many ways). Blow dryers, washing machines and toaster are the exception not the rule. You will be encouraged not to visit if you're not invited.
I live for a few years on an Island north of Lasquite. You need to take 2 ferries from Vancouver Island to get there. I made gardens, greenhouse from milled cedars at the base of old growth fir trees with bald eagle nests.
Did the chickens, and pig thing as well. I'm surprised at the existence of the feral sheep in such numbers. I had my own run in with cougars, which made having livestock, in addition to the raccoons, a bit of a challenge.
It was a great time, but the very wealthy from Vancouver, the US and China, are buying up the land causing prices to skyrocket. The land I was on which was purchased for $65k in 1991, sold for over 1.2 million last year.
Folks, the age of some of the residents and the work they do, is typical of those living such lifestyles. And you can do it in norther climes as well.
Urban life is killer and pretentious.

Pa Sander, they can buy up all the land with their funny money but when the revolution comes, they won’t be able to have it or anything more than what they use themselves. Hopefully they don’t have anything because they’re hanged for crimes against humanity. They want everything and they want everyone enslaved living in cubbies in their surveilled cities. I don’t know if I’ll see the revolution in my lifetime but their greed is going to backfire on them eventually. People will only allow so much before they snap.

Really depends on whose grandparents or great-grandparents. Pretty sure the amount of farmers/rural folk was already declining by 1900 and many had modern full time factory jobs.

Why not? Both of my grandfathers were quite active into their late 80's. I like how fit he looked. He has a reason to live. His stress levels are low. He is comfortable with his life. He drinks wine while bathing and doing laundry. Good on him!
If you can merge modern convenience with an active stress free life. You will live longer. Dont get me wrong they all have their stress but its different. They are not chasing the ever moving end of the rainbow. They decided they dont need the pot of gold. Which removes a huge amount of unwarranted stress.

In 1977 the average 30 yr old Canadian man had the same fitness level as a 62 yr old Swedish man. Everybody is lazy and getting lazier thus resulting in decreased overall fitness and decreased longevity and quality of life. Chop some wood kids..this island is heaven on Earth.
A friend of my husband recently passed away, 88 years old. Up until the last half year or so, he was walking around doing everything himself, fishing every day, tending to his home out in the countryside with his wife. It's absolutely possible to stay healthy and mobile way beyond 80. In fact I think it's the city lifestyle that makes people more or less crippled by the age of 70.

That 83 year old reminds me of my neighbors. Both 85, run a nursery. By that I mean do everything. They both have worn out their hip replacements twice they work so hard.
This life is where I'm heading. Hopefully my house would sell soon so I will have the money to go live of grid some where in northern Minnesota near Boundaries Water. I can't wait to unplug from this so call civilize insane back ward world where slavery is freedom and war is peace. I'm finally going to be free, I can just feel it.

O-I-C-U disolve, did you ever get free (it is now almost Dec 2018)? I agree with you about getting free of this backwards world! The only thing holding me back now is for the U.S. military to get done medically evaluating me (for disability purposes) which I hope will be wrapped up before June 2019 so I can go be somewhat free off-grid (you still gotta pay taxes, so you are not completely FREE).

@@nathaliewilson1817 Minnesota has lots of monoculture, corn soybeans etc in the southern part. Not a very natural landscape but i dont mind it anymore i was in a bad place back then, too. Still would like to move someday but it's on the back burner now, have more family oriented goals now

Between yesterday and today (it is not even 9:30 a.m. EST time yet) I have come across two separate articles that have two sects of people gunning for America. This place is beautiful! I spent a few nights on Lasqueti island at a family friends in the 80's. I lived in the mountains for a few years off grid, and I loved it, but it's not for everyone.
The eighty year logger /engineer was someone i can relate to .Hopefully the island doesn't get invaded by developers after this expose but the thing that will determine that will be wether or not some mental invalid allows the power company jurisdiction ,if that happens this way of life will change.Nice to see a window into another world though i found the commentary a bit off.

Yeah I live in Southern Ontario and it's just now starting to warm up. I do remember as a kid visiting Victoria in the summer and it was sunny the whole time. However, every time since it's been raining and cloudy. I'm planning on going in August this time, hopefully it'll be a nice change, but either way I love the lush greenery whether its cloudy/raining or not

What I found odd about the question is that it is very easy to make unsafe water safe. Just take a big metal pot, scoop some water from the creek, and heat the pot over a fire to boiling few minutes, then let it cool. There! giardia, etc.. all dead now. Water is now safe to drink. BTW, a lot of those water filters camping supply companies sell don't actually work. I've met people who say they drank "filtered" water and got sick. I'm not sure why there would be any fuss to engineer such a device when boiling water is not too difficult.

I am getting ready to purchase a portable countertop reverse osmosis water filter. I am very excited about that and will be taking it off-grid when I finally get free out of the U.S military hopefully before June 2019.
I have no idea where in the world I will end up living yet....but since I grew up in Jamaica until I was almost 19 years old, the strong need and desire for tropical food to eat such as ackee and others like it is something that has given me a great foundation in life that has been missing for the past 21 years (I will be 40 years old in 3 weeks Dec 2018) which has now the cumulative effect of 21 one years of my body being poisoned and is painfully dying an agonizing death....I need to get out and off this toxic American living ASAP and live a freeing life from toxic food/vaccines/etc.
All I would truly WANT to be comfortable is wifi to get on the Internet for my laptop [I would *NOT* need a phone either as I have a Skype phone number I pay US$80 per day to call unlimited in the U.S & Canada for anyone that would want to call to see if I am still alive if they don't want to do e-mail contact. As it is now, hardly any family calls me, and the tiny bit of friend(s) I have left doesn't call me anyway...so that US$80 yearly might be something I eventually let go if I end up using it less than 10 times per year within the first 2 years of living off-grid which I am estimating I probably will after the excitement of the people aware I am going off-grid wears off]....that's the only modern living that I would want as I haven't turned on to watch my 19 inches 1998 purchased Admiral TV on my own since Dec 2009 and haven't turned on at ALL since 2014, I have not owned a microwave at home since Oct 2017, I don't turn on any music at home since EVER really (even though I have an either late 70's or early 80's Yamaha entertainment set [I will be selling before my move]from the owner of my first house purchased along with a 1958 Concierto [German] radio [that I will more than likely keep]). I have given away ALL the furniture I own and had (and recently gave away all the wine glasses I purchased even though I don't drink alcoholic beverages and ALL my fancy dinnerware, and gave 20% of my clothes away and will be giving away 78% of the remaining 80% clothes....and it sucks that I just bought a brand new ford mustang I picked out the features myself [custom made] in Sep 2017....
So the bloody car is the only $hit in my life that is going to be a major loss my life in that it is a big spending and getting rid of it, I won't be able to sell it for what is still owed on it....one of the top places I want to go live off-grid in South America doesn't allow used car in country nor even allow non-citizen to brings car in the country). But regardless of the ball-and-chain ford mustang around my neck I will get free even at a loss to myself....because I am planning on getting started up with the initial purchase of land, food trees/vegetables materials to build my own one-room hut (I need to learn the skills which I will- already researching carpentry/welding trade schools to get the preliminary hands-on training for a 6 months or so period....I don't need the bullcrap theory....I just need some safety measure [wear a shield to weld, etc] and then teach how to do it....I do it a couple of times then I go on my merry way to build my hut and an outdoor shower/toilet combo that grey water will split into watering plant life and some going off to black water and the black water[poop] goes into a biogas system to create fuel for whatever cooking not done by solar cooker and if in a cold place, then the biogas used for heating....no chopping down of trees [that is still harming our surroundings....we have the technology and knowledge to not destroy our planet to live but we still do even with these off-griders that still burn wood for heat]). But I am very excited....

I just got this particular show 9 years too late. In any case is very interesting, despite the cynical tone of the reporter. I noticed that most of the inhabitants of this marvelous place are not millenniums and that makes the whole difference. This present generation will have a very hard time to adapt to the world that is rapidly coming toward us. A little note on the side : the family with 40+ dogs ( well fed) maybe is the one keeping the sheep under control from taking over the island. Greetings from Toronto.

This living is not for everyone including myself but as a new agency it is important to let everyone come to their own conclusion and not try and sway the views opinion by back lighting the article with humorous music and condescending questions or statements that leaves the the person watching this thinking this is a negative thing.
That is exactly what I hate about Canadian Journalism they always have an opinion. Let the viewer/listener/reader decide.

omg,i dont wanna judge this reporter but its kinda funny i mean cant she survive without a hairdyer lol, honestly im not saying im so good,but me i will and can live this way of life,this way of living is better than in the city with all this booming technology,humans inventions that are meant to destroy this world only. I live like this before back in my country,and trust me guys i miss it a lottttttt!This is simple beautiful way of living life!!! I lived with my grandma before,we dont have much money,theres no electricity,even oven we dont have it,we cooked our food by clay pot,then we use woods even the rice(empty shell to start a fire for cooking),and i was only a kid that time,its even a good exercise for the body not to have a lot of this new tools,devices,technology,yes it help us to do things quickly and easier but it makes us lazy too,notto use our body to do a lot of things,and its affecting our health too. i always play and dance around when my grandma will ask me to grab some woods coz she have to cook our food,we use candles or lantern as our light at night i was like 6-7 yrs old that time and i know/learned a lot of things to surive,we wash our clothes by hands if theres rust or dirt on our clothes,we use lime or lemon or even vinegar to make it so clean,whiter and it will take away the rust in my shirt,we dont get sick much,and if we got sick,even i have mumps lol we still manage to cure it or heal it quiclky coz my grandma just use toothpaste or something kinda like color blue powder that we use to put in the water to make our clothes whiter in washing,she used that for my mumps(on my both jaw)and we did survive,if im hungry i just eat some fruits or veggie that we planted,and the water is from the well,its super clean no chlorine and even we dont brush our teeth much its super white and we never even tried to go to the dentist,i just eat guava(1 of the best fruit rich in vit.c) it made my teeth stronger i think lol we dont even have money to buy all those fancy clothes,i got only 1 pair of slippers,we dont have those toys like barbie or plastic toys,me and my 2 brothers we just use woods,we curve it or a small empty can

Can I ask why did you leave that place? I wish I knew somebody to live off the grid with. We can just become roommates and live there forever. Maybe even develop our own little community. I grew up in toronto and I dislike it very much. Yes its a good place to be if you are employed but it is also very lonely. Sometimes I wish my parents never immigrated here and we stayed in our birth country with all my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

Lmaooo ive lived by this island for twenty years (on Vancouver Island) and had no clue about it until 5 months ago when my friend pointed to it in the distance. it is most definitely isolated no one i know has heard of it except my friends best friend who`s family owns a ton of acreage on Lasqueti and has this insane garden where they grow their own food..i wanna live like that.

This piece isn't an accurate representation of off grid living and only serves to turn more people away from it. You don't have to live and shower in a shit shack on a remote island with no electricity. That's a small, remote community taking the idea to unnecessary extremes. There are plenty of 'suburban' off grid homes in almost every city, how about Global do a piece on one of those so people can actually see that they don't have to live like this just to make a measurable difference in their carbon footprint? Not seem crazy enough? Wouldn't do as much damage to the cause? Shame on Global for mocking these people and misrepresenting the truth about off grid living!

I guess I see what their doing and what he's saying is connecting to the world and divorcing from the agendas of those in power. We cant change the system because its destructive in nature. I have a project that's similar ideas with solar but it's a 40 acre farm with community center. People have tiny homes and can have animals, and a barn for those with some larger animals.

But chief amongst them is America. This same research suggests that they will be overtaking America with biological warfare that will only kill the humans. If China is going to take over America, then they would be taking over ALL of North America. I don't know if that will ever happen...but I believe that it will happen.
