Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Rebuilding The Basement (Welding I-Beams!)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лис 2024
- My 1917 mansion's basement needs a complete rebuild. In an attempt to make the basement safer, stronger, and livable, over the past several months we have been rebuilding virtually everything and today we are working on one of the final steps, which is to weld together the I-beams that are supporting the house. After today, we will be able to remove all the center support posts in the basement which will turn the basement from 5 rooms, to 3!
If you really enjoy this video, no need to worry, there is an incredible amount of mansion to be built! There will be many more videos to come!

Something to think about for those of us in the audience who are not farmers; when you are replacing an old part (such as the teeth on the combine) some of us might like to see a side-by-side comparison of the old and new to understand the wear-and-tear factor. I have to say, I am flabbergasted at how much maintenance (both preventive and repair) goes on on a farm. Makes me respect the food I buy in the store. You farm guys and gals are awesome.
Hey Roman you might want to make some L brackets to weld into the U brackets and the I beam to re-enforce the U brackets attaching welds on the I beam. Weld the L bracket to the I Beam and the U Bracket. this is a save bet and could be over kill BUT its better to be save then sorry later down the line.
If you don’t trust your welds, you shouldn’t be welding…
Absolutely. I know Cole wants everything open, but if the support structure in the basement fails, there’re 3 floors above it that’ll have cracked drywall & bowed floors at the very least. I’d much rather have posts in the basement than a compromised foundation. Idk, maybe he did get approval from a structural engineer & we don’t know it.
They said toward the beginning they were going to weld extra pieces up there.
That sounds like a sensible option to me! Especially with all the weight above
Romans Welds aren't bad guys. he is actually doing it right. I'm just suggesting some added support just to be safe.
A Grinder and Paint makes me the Welder I ain’t. 😂
Been there buddy; no one’s welds look pretty in the beginning. It’s practice & experience that makes you good & pretty. Keep it up though, it’s a valuable life skill to have; especially on a farm.
Anyways, greetings from Manchester, NH.
Opening up the basement below where the stairs are made the basement so much bigger. Nice work guys. With Aloha...
You young gentleman are amazing, not only with your obvious talent, but also for the honorable way you live your lives. Blessings to you.
Add a couple of gussets to each side of those u-brackets in case Romans welds aren’t perfect, if nothing it will add additional strength and support to the brackets and I beams. Nice work you’re crushing it.
I would like to see some gussets added as well
Yeah gussets and a few bolts through the gluelam beams. It's fine with an empty house as it's the least amount of loading. By the time they've got the plasterboard and all the furniture in there I would NOT be trusting the entire load to those 8 welds alone.
@@fozzyami me neither, which is why I wondered if they had a structural engineer consult before doing this. I live in PA, highly regulated. Each stage of construction has to be approved & pass inspection. If the floor is gonna settle & sag, it’s gonna be at the weakest spot. Could cause buckled floors & cracks in the drywall at the very least.
@@chrissyfrancis8952 I don't understand why he's trying to get rid of all the vertical support in the basement. It's a basement!!!!
At least he will be able to live in his movie theater when the house falls down
Cole, I love your unflagging enthusiasm!
I love that you've included Cooper in your recent videos. The naysayers are just a$$holes. You are trying to show the entire farm experience/lifestyle and I appreciate that.
Cooper does fun and rewarding work. Same for Roman. So much better than sitting in an office. 👍👍👍
Looks like Cooper is holding the farm up while cole does his own thing...but Cooper is far more talented with machines, welding etc. guess everyone has their things
Thanks for the progress report, its all coming together in the basement.Tell Cooper and DC its also appreciated on the farm info and updates. See you in the next one👍
Sorry Roman, that's a 'sheet' metal break! You need a 50ton press break to bend that thickness of material.
I wonder if he could have partially cut through the plate to make it possible to bend with that press?
If one is using an angle grinder to make a scoring line down to about 1/2 to 2/3's of the depth it will be much easier to bend the plate and as a bonus you will get a nice area for the weld.
I LOVE watching you guys! If all families worked together like yours our world would be a much better place!
You got brilliant talented workers on the Farm! So many amazing skills between you five gentlemen! Well done!!
It's been splendid watching you both work on the house
COLE I'm not gonna lie I only watched 20% of the farm related videos BUT this Mansion renovation ive watched 100% ive not missed a single episode!!!!! Thats a fact
SAME!
@@chasetonga 😁👍🏼 If you go look at the views the farming videos have gotten and look at the views the mansion renovation videos are getting it's an astronomical difference. These videos are getting double triple & quadruple the amount of views! Plus I bet I saw 40 commercials on this video compared to maybe 4 commercials Id see when I watched a farm video. So Cole has to be making a lot more money per video from UA-cam on this renovation project than he done on the farm video's. Just go to show people are more intrigued by these type things than they are of watching someone plant/ harvest corn 🌽 or work on Tractors. He needs to Let Cooper his brother run the second channel and call it CornStar Farm and keep doing building &. Renovation on this channel. The money 💰 he's going to make on these videos should be a deciding factor in my opinion.
Roman WTG on welding! Cole you’re such a rock star!!! Everyone get to work!!!
Roman needs his own CAM
And a Cole CAM
his own channel....we love that guy!
@TheBonnieberry yes that guy is A.i lol ..
Holy crap, it's the Fly Lady 🤣
Cole! You have the highest energy level in UA-cam! I suck up all I can when I watch. With Aloha...
I absolutely love Roman but PLEASE get a professional to handle those structural welds.
But they watched a youtube video!
I gotta tell you Roman :-/ it doesn't look nice lol and it will hold But for people that know how to weld we would say that's a heck of a Scab job 😂😂😂😂😂 . Welding overhead is not the same as welding flat lol
I knew someone would beat me to this comment.
@@craigschultz3409you Sir, have hit the nail on the head.
@@FuenteSmokerbut did he stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night??
Good to see all the activity going on the farm.
You guys take care and stay safe.
Loving everything Cole. You are amazing and you are all doing a great job.
Great job everyone! Thanks for sharing. It's good for us to know what goes into running a farm.
Nice work Cooper and Zach and Dad Good job Cole and Roman
❤ your content! The work you all do...hard work at that!!! Music is on point! God bless you all🌾
Dude, my friend is a structural engineer for the City of Toronto. He certifies the citys bridges. He watched this eith me and said "holy shi# this is a disater waiting to happen, no way in hell will those small connection points hold all that load" like others have said you need to drastically reinforce that bracket. Ideally have it bolted in and double the thickness that you have now. Or better yet, put that support pole back in. There is a reason why basements have support posts. Best case you suffer from sagging and deflection of the bracket. Worst case, ur welds fail catastrophicly, leading to a cascading failure of your entire structure. Since you now have everything tied into eachother there is now a single point of failure. Not good.
This is Cole's #1 issue that he refuses to address...he honestly doesn't have a good idea what he's doing. He literally said after the bin site that he doesn't trust contractors...there's a time for them...such as building foundations/structural elements
All of you on this channel are inspiring youngsters to be the best they can x ❤
All that welding reminds me of watching Paul, Sr. And Paul, Jr. doing welding for their custom made motorcycles on American chopper!
Man I can recall the episode when you had to clean out that super packed basement. What a huge change. Awesome work.
I like the mixture of family events.
Roman I Welded for many years and I believe that you did satisfactory job.
I love your channel, and the fact you guys want to do everything yourself. But, I'm speaking to you as a welder of many years. You really should get a pro to go over your welds.
A word to the WISE suffices. Cole, listen to this commenter⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
Cooper is a welder so sure he will have a look at it.
@@carolinetaylor5594 Cooper welds, so did my Dad, he was a fine welder, he was however not certified, I don't think Coop is either. Maybe he is, but I don't think so.
@makeuplover6852 pretty sure Cooper is qualified, it was mentioned many years ago on thr channel that he was studying welding as a trade.
@@makeuplover6852 Certified or not does not qualify him in structural building and what is required to provide enough structural support. This is not a place to cut corners and hope it is enough.
Yea!!!!!!!!you all are amazing! So excited for Harvest! And for the house work! DC you keep them straight!
Roman should capitalize on this channel for his own builds on his property. Building renovations are awesome!I would watch him build his chicken coop over the crop/machinery videos.
Cole doesn’t want that cause he’d lose followers. Roman is more entertaining and doesn’t yell and he has a great sense of humor that’s enough for Cole to lose subs cause he’s annoying and repetitive and loud and annoying.
That was very nice of Cooper to stop over to check Roman’s welds. Had he not done that, people might have gotten the ( wrong) idea that he didn’t care. THANKS, Cooper❣️
Way to go Cole and Roman. 💕
Roman for the win, actually two wins!
#1 Successfully installed two hanging U-shaped brackets
#2 Didn't burn down the house!
👍👍
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼good point
As a welding engineer i appreciate your efforts and for small jobs i recommend everyone to try welding themself, but with an important job like a structual weld in your home… please get a professinal to do it properly. For me that weld would not even be a proper tack weld and i would have it to be cut out.
Your intro always give me a BIG smile, thank you for the share.
If you were to release these first thing in the morning, I wouldn't need to drink coffee for a weeeeeek! 😊
I love watching Cooper. I see he has some battle wounds on his hands from fixing machinery. That’s normal for a mechanic. Thanks for showing us a lot of stuff we can use.
Love your videos. Your honestly one of my favorite UA-cam people. Keep them coming.
First of all Cooper you are amazing and videos are spot on.
Cole - please Add a laundry shut from upstairs floors to the laundry room or install a lazy suzie. That way you don’t have to carry washing down and up.
I am glad zack is coming into his own.
What an accomplishment for the day. Great job.
hey Cole that plumber checked out your plumbing job and gave some really good advice on what you should do before moving forward
I wonder if thats the reason Cole responded to the video? LOL
@@warrenmichael918 did not see that one yet =P
@@kenny4813 The plumbing video of Richard watching Cole do the plumbing, that video is the one Cole responded to it. He watched the video and responded to it.
@warrenmichael918 I wish we would have a follow up.
There will probably be one for his welding also
I just noticed that what roman is doing is much like putting binding on a quilt. I quilting, 45° and 60° angles are quite common. When you bind either of those angles, you need to miter the corners. This creates a strong bond with 3 layers, and makes it look nicer, and makes the quilt, whether piecing or binding, a utilitarian quilt. It's pretty, useful, and will hold up with use. Everything I make is meant for use, washable, and strong...and looks nice. 😊 I'm catching on! And, I'm understanding what Cooper and Zack are doing as well. Lots of work to be done before or in between harvest. Very nice how everyone has their strengths, everyone learns something everyday, and everyone is fantastic at problem solving. Incredible problem solving without pulling your hair out and swearing.😅 I have a feeling that Daddy and Mama Cornstar have a lot to do with that.❤😊
I have been watching since the beginning and love your videos! Can't wait to see the finished project.
Wow u guys are truly one productive family! I love to watch y’all!
P.s. thanx so much Cole for bringing the intro back!! Love, love, love it!!!
Interesting video with home building vs farm equipment maintenance as seen over the past several weeks.
Great to see young men work on their own without supervision, not common these days.
Thanks for all the entertainment today ! 👍
Look like Cooper has quite a bit of experience with welding. But looks like he has his hands full getting all the trucks, wagons and machinery ready for fall harvest!
Yelling is fine...your doing such a good job, they wear ear plugs, y'all are awesome 👍❤😊
THOSE WELDS LOOK LIKE MOMS SPAGHETTI!!🎉
its an excellent goal to be able to do everything yourself. That being said you've overbuilt a large portion of the house what time all in favor of, but the metal beam should have some L brackets welded in there for extra support the welds kind of hold the whole house up.
Cole I love this episode you and your friend is doing a great job on your house
I wouldnt be trusting those u bracket welds ...im only a guy who's been a welder fitter for 20 yrs thou
I agree %100 and 7 hours to do that it’s a 2 hour max job by looking at it I’d say maybe %10 of the weld is all that is holding
This has been so much fun, seeing the transformation each episode, your home getting closer and closer to being finished. This was a fantastic content idea Cole. I think it inspires folks to try and do more DYI projects and be able to take pride in knowing they can accomplish much more than maybe they thought. I can’t wait to watch the concrete trucks roll in! That is some fun but hard work. Thanks for doing this series Cole! God Bless
Thanks for your comment my volume is okay, maybe some balls 🎱 need to drop.
I am loving this series! I am a novice welder and I would love to have the opportunity to improve. Looks like great fun! The continued back and forth with Cooper and Roman and Daddy Cornstar is going awesome! And of course I am always watching for Cole and what he is up to! 😂
Can’t wait for the basement floor pouring!!!
Editor: Can you ask Cole to give us a look at the tile draining every couple or few videos please. Their's just something about tile drainage that us men find extremely interesting in seeing. Thanks. Great editing by the way. Love the work you all do.
Love watching Roman & Cole. The rest I skip. Roman is 21:58 unbelievable Cole & himself are a great team👏👏
Love the multi Cam format. Cole, hyper drive, Cooper, dead pan and Daddy is just a Star.
Well done, everyone. Good job, Roman.
One thing for certain it's true you can't please everyone....i like watching keep up the good work!👍
I love this format of house and farm. Cooper cam, daddy Cornstar, etc
Love your video openings…never stop your enthusiasm!
Roman done a great welding. There is always something you could have done. Practice makes perfect.
I think with Cooper’s info lets us know what is happening on the farm. It will be nice to see harvesting of the crops
@terrycrawford5778 remove Cooper from.this channel lol
The anticipation of seeing the completed flooring in the basement is high; it's going to look amazing, guys. Love your videos, they're a great watch!
The video format is working out keep up the good work
Won’t it be fun to see the boys riding their little bikes or skates all around this basement 💙
They'll be out of high school before that happens.
I would have made the beam flanges were they could be bolted to the flange and I Beam
Look again….no way to get bolts to the top side of I beam….a welded gooseneck ball is rated for 26,000 pounds.
I feel tired just watching you guys work. Great job!
C channel bottom, angle iron top, band iron strap, use dimensional steel to your advantage in situations like this. It's already been figured out. Weld flat whenever possible.
I grew up in Glasgow Scotland and worked in the shipyards as a welder for 10 years. I was a rare sight being female. Now my family runs a farm in Germany. Roman you are doing a great job.
Why didn’t Zack or Cooper do the welding? BTW Cole, you have got to be one of the few farm boys out there that hasn’t learned how to weld!
How about Nick, the pro welder who did the first welds until his welder broke?
Hell if you watch long enough there's a lot of things Cole hasn't learned how to do. When there was nothing else to clean up on the farm he had no idea what to do... so he gutted his house.
@@ILGuy2012 bro nicks welds looked like shit. all this shit will hold, but I wish cole had a real pro come in, would have taken a real pro like 3 hours tops at 150-250 an hour, 750$ max and its a never remember event
@@OwnerOfOwn No way Cole's paying that to have a weld, they'll just hear a loud pop some night and wonder what the hell that was and blow it off until they gtet up in the morning and see big cracks in the drywall.
I like watching the Corn family getting equipment ready for the harvest. It’s kind of exciting. Another year coming to a close.
Man, I hope Cole reads all the welding concerns!
Read mine at the beginning 😅
@@chasetonga he doesnt read anything anymore, because all the comments are telling him he’s doing something wrong…which the comments are usually right. I believe cole is a “know it all”
@@jerryd1813 probably not because if they did the videos would be titled “re-doing the rebuild on my $7000 dollar mansion”
@@jerryd1813 ugh...I am thinking maybe you have not watched all of the Reno vids? He HAS an engineer - he has engineered drawings, he's offering with specialist in EACH field, brought in an electrician, brought in a plumber, brought in a welder (his friend the other day) . He has mentioned MANY times he has conferred with an engineer, a design team and during the major first phase of the work demo, re building floors he had a CONTRACTOR on site, everyday...WHY do people insist on spreading these lies that he hasn't conferred with "professionals" ...like watch the vids, pay attention, and stop spreading misinformation.
@@MeredithFarms actually either he, or other members of his family read ALL the comments, they have said this before AND Cole has asked MANY times for advice on different things during the last several months of renovations. People need to seriously stop with this kinda nonsense.
I love the renovation work.
Good work man! Love following along!
In Sweden the corrugated hoses connect with a coupler on the outside the hose/pipe so no dirt can get stuck in the edge. So much that's different in your way do some things 😊 so interesting to watch.
Good to see daddy corn star. He looks good and seems to be in good spirits. Love you and your family.
Great job all of you.👏👍
I like all the videos and can't wait until the corn stops growing so I can see it get harvested. That's why they are fixing up the trucks. Cooper said that the corn doesn't have to wait for us to get it done and that we, meaning the family doesn't have to wait for the corn and all will be ready when the time comes to get the corn and soy beans. Sounds smart to me. 🤔
Loved watching. Great job. Keep rolling on.
He REALLY should have had a problem welder to do that.
Cole...be ready to lay in bed every night with the thought..."are those welds going to give way....???
Think of that every night!
Cole you should test that water drain put some water in it and find out if it goes through the system. If you don’t do it now you could pay for it later anyways I love what you’re doing. I love your videos. I wait for your videos, you should be a program an hour long. You are the most popular person I think on today.
Yahoo! It's Cole!
Excellent video Cole and Roman.
Have those welds redone by a professional, nothing against Roman, but those welds hold the weight of your house,,, might be good enough for now but not good enough for a few years, better safe than sorry
It will hold .😂 just doesn't look nice
Beautiful job! Cant wait for the basement cleanup!❤
I don’t thinks those supports you made will work to support the house. You need engineered brackets. Flat plate is not very structurally sound. It’s gonna flex and sag the joints
This is what many have said...cole should have someone in the know..he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Failing foundation will ruin everything
Great job today guys, you accomplished alot , filling in the gravel will go quickly, rest well , till the next video😁🖖💓
Love that you brought back the original intro....Heyyyy Everybody... you're watching Cooooollleeee the Cornstar!!!
Epic work boys! It's looking amazing
Watching from West Virginia.
John Denver said it was almost heaven there🎵 I’ve never been to your state, but I take his word for it❗️. Hello from Utah 👋
Thank you señor for the update video!!!😊
sorry but those U bracket welds are terrible to be structural and it needs gussets with perpendicular welds
i was woundering abt that idk anything about welding but it looked off to me
Yep, also to thin need to .375 to .5 inch and should have been bent in a U not cut and weld.
Yeah, Roman is an awesome guy but, you really need to get someone with some more welding time under their belt to re-weld those joints. Those are not good welds with no voids, sorry Roman. And if you can choose, ALWAYS take a flat horizontal weld over a vertical one (prepping those brackets beforehand). Cole you need to get your welder buddy in there to go over those beads 💪👍⚡️
This has been an awesome adventure to follow boys!!! Keep em coming!
No offence Roman but Copper should do the welding he has experienced and schooling your doing the best you can but the structure welding Cooper should be doing it.😮
I seen Copper welds wouldn't trust his weld for this either.
