  • Here we have a broken Philips AC3033 Air Purifier purchased from eBay. These are current models sold in high street shops for £485. This one from eBay has no power at all. Can it be fixed? Let's find out.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

    Remember that this is just for entertainment, and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    The thing with the wifi board (if you want to fix it). Those are very common ESP8266 modules. If you want to fix it, don't throw away the old board. Buy a new board and then transfer the spi flash chip to the new board (the chip with 8 pins in the blue board that you removed). You don't need anything else.
    If you have thrown away the old board... well, you need to find a dump for the spi flash of that board.

      The Wifi on these Philips things is disappointing to say the least!
      I have a similar device from them and while it is functional the Philips app on my smartphone now discovers other people's purifiers...

    • @SDogo
      @SDogo Рік тому +2

      @@oldguy9051 That's because maybe other people didn't take the time to proper connect the device to the network, and the purifier stills in discovery mode so it can be configured.
      Technically that is a feature, and a lot of devices with wifi connectivity has the same thing going on.

    Please Vince, when messing around with live mains PSUs start at the cold side output, if you're getting 5v, 12v etc etc out of the PSU then its a pretty safe assumption the PSU is good and then you'll know you don't need to touch the hot side at all. Only ever get involved with mains as the final resort when absolutely necessary. Stay safe 🙂

    • @olafdesneeuwman8983
      @olafdesneeuwman8983 Рік тому +3

      From my experience switching PSU's with bad output caps can sometimes provide the correct output voltages as long as they're not under (heavy) load, but the voltage will drop when (heavy) load is applied. Just make sure to test the PSU with load (which makes it harder to diagnose as you need the actual load, which might be dead/shorted, or you need something that draws similar power)

    • @dungeonseeker3087
      @dungeonseeker3087 Рік тому +2

      @@olafdesneeuwman8983 Oh absolutely (it happened in this video), there will always be outliers and yeah, assuming PSU is good without load is not exactly ideal however this scenario will be quite rare, in the majority of cases if your PSU is outputting the correct voltages then its good. Plus with PSUs in general, its simply good practice to start at the cold side and work backwards from there, you should only be measuring live mains if the thing is totally dead and you're looking for the break in the circuit, if you have anything at all on the cold side then then leave the hot side alone (at least until you absolutely know the issue is on the hot side).

      Philips being a bad product? No idea, but here's the way I think. Companies spend untold amounts of money on advertising and then try to chisel a customer who has a complaint? That makes no sense. Word of mouth is insanely effective. Ship the customer a free part or a free unit and you've got a friend for life. What's $400 when advertising? Absolutely nothing. They could slow or stop advertising if they handled complaints like that.
      In advertising you need two things; Visibility and a good reputation. That's all there is to life.

    The reason why a capacitor can have a bad ESR but still retain its capacitance is that the ESR value is related to the state of the metal strips within the capacitor, so you could get a small area where its messed up/trashed and as a result increases the resistance even though its in a single localized spot, but the rest of the capacitor is fine and therefore is capable of keeping its capacitance value, hence why you can't rely on the capacitance value to check if a capacitor is bad or not.
    Just to add/ pay a bit of respect to the people I got this information from was the UA-camr Learn Electronic Repair who did a couple of videos on the ESR meter and how it works, and also a video by DiodeGoneWild on the ESR meter just for anyone who wanted to learn a bit more.

    these are only designed to remind you to purchase new filters often, cost nothing build in a factory shipping is still cheap but you pay in gold.

    I think that when you disconnected the the wifi module you removed some of the load and the capacitor was able to keep up with the ripple for some time.
    That was probably the missing (4.7v) 15 v line, When there is a lot of ripple the voltage will read lower.

    Great fix indeed. I did wonder if it was meant to boot loop earlier. And when that capacitor finally built up enough charge it then stayed on. Wonder if the WiFi board took just enough voltage to drop it too low to power up with that shoddy capacitor. Out of curiosity does it now read 15 volts rather than 4.7?

      Thanks Paul, unfortunately I didn't check after the capacitor replacement. I'd like to think that it would read higher now 👍

    Haha... almost same story I had... was tracing problem on smart speaker... using fancy thermal cam and all... turned out to be bad electrolytic caps. And yes that device wasn't that old either... The good ol' cap "plague" 😅

    Great vid and fix! But I am, as a Dutchie, ashamed of how cheaply Philips products are made and how expensive they sell. I avoid Philips at all costs and went for a Winix Zero purifier. Korean made, runs 24/7 for 4 years flawless and can be completely taken apart in 5 minutes. No hidden clips etc, just screwed together.

    We need a My Mate Vince Keychain sound board. Button 1. This is a complete utter mystery to me.

    I hope you vacuumed the filter outside. The vacuum filter would not catch that fine of particles. You would just blow them back in the air.

    Have mine (a cheaper air purifier) on percentage air quality and when a friend vaped in the room even with window open went down to 0 percent and fan went to absolute max. Took about 5 minutes to get it back to the usual 95. In the kitchen it will also ramp up and if the dog shakes also sometimes does too. Most of the time it's on low. Can't see how it can filter much of the room when it's that quiet. So I sometimes I put mine on high manually for an hour or so.

    A lot of wifi cards are essentially the same.
    They are fitted in loads of machines, a maufacturer is not going to design a wifi card specifically for their machine if it is cheap to buy
    These purfiers are clever machines
