  • Hi, in this video I attempt to look at another Dyson fan AM07. This one was purchased from eBay and it apparently trips the fuse board when plugged in. Will this one be fixable? Or will it be another lump of wasted plastic.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

Remember that this is just for entertainment, and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

@My Mate Vince the burning was caused by water damage when we get leaks in properties we sometimes get carbon trails caused when electricity flows through water using the cabon as the conductor (path of least resistance)and shorts and then is allowed to dry leaving behind the carbon. The water gets in through the base, the air draws in from the sides but also causes air to be drawn in from the bottom, the same way the top part works air around the edge draws air through the middle.

In order to prevent the circuit breaker to blow, you can put an incandescent bulb in series with the load. In case of a short circuit, the bulb will switch on brightly. Otherwise it might just light up very dimly.
Do not use your variac transformer without propper protection. A short-circuit can draw enough current to melt the thin wire in your variac.

You should really get yourself a light bulb to act as a current limiter!! So simple but yet so effective. You simply wire a 60W filament light bulb inline with the live between the mains and the questionable item, (have one set up with a mains plug, light socket and mains socket you can plug in any time you need to test something) if there is a short the bulb then just lights up instead of things blowing up and tripping the power or damaging your variac etc!

The fuse didn’t blow as it’s only fitted to protect the cable going to the fan, if the current isn’t high enough for long enough then the fuse in the plug won’t blow. For an example a BS1362 fuse (plug top fuse) rated a 3A will be able to withstand 5A for over 0.3 seconds so if it’s a short internally then the current probably wouldn’t get high enough for long enough before the rcd trips within the required 30ms

  • @paultasker7788
    @paultasker7788 Рік тому +2

So I've had a number of random things happen. First thing. In the middle of the night a Hotpoint dishwasher (not switched on) blew up and blew the RCD in the fuse box. There was a large flash and bang. It was caught on my home security camera. Sure enough the dishwasher was dead. Got a new dishwasher and all was fine. Never thought more about it until my RCDs started to trip every week or so always at night. Would reset fine but then one time it didnt. I did the usual unplug everything to find the faulty device. Traced it to the TV unit and to one extension cable. I unplugged literally everything and found it was the cable itself that would immediately trip the RCD. Got a new lead and all was well. Still had RCD trips though. I googled it and found that slugs can do this. We have slugs in the house so I covered all unused sockets with mains covers. Since then no RCD trips. So now I'm pretty sure the slug crawled into the dishwasher smelling waste food and somehow bridged the live/neutral connection in the middle of the night. Or the socket the dishwasher was plugged into. Then a slug must have crawled into an unoccupied socket in the mains extension lead doing the same thing again. Slugs are very conductive. Sadly our slugs seem immune to copper tape, crawl over it as if it's not there don't like beer traps and even the light doesn't totally scare them off, nor 10 litres of bleach poured under the house.

    Hi Vince.
We had an upright fan similar to your old one.
Harry our Alsation had been left in the house whilst we went to the supermarket, a while after this we turned the fan on, Massive bang and all trips blew, Harry had wee'd on the fan whilst we were out.
I found it very strange that no fuses blew either in the plug or the fan.
Maybe the fuse board trips cut out so fast, the fuses dont have time to blow.
Thing is, the equipment will blow everytime it's switched on, a bit dis-concerning.
When I saw where it was black, I really thought the fan motor had blown.

Hi Vince, an isolation transformer is designed to isolate you from the live wire from the wall socket,
so if you touch live out of the transformer and earth you SHOULD NOT get electrocuted.
However you should always be careful working on mains equipment and high voltages.
it wont protect you from touching the live and neutral return wire out of the isolation transformer and GETTING A SHOCK.
There are also some isolation transformers where the earth wire is isolated and some are not,
this can make a difference, like on 3 wire main equipment for example
Isolation transformers will not prevent you from getting shocks off certain equipment, SO BEWARE!!
Isolation transformers will have a max power rating so be careful not to overload them.
They will NOT protect you from charged capacitors either !!!

First thing I saw that was wrong. THIS IS A MAJOR MISTAKE BY MANY PEOPLE AND COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND ACCIDENTS ETC.
!!!PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!! The fan power consumption and amps is stated and calculated after examples.
Vince, the answer to your question @2:29, why is the fuse not blowing? it is overrated for the fan and should be a 3amp fuse most 5amp. Below is an explanation. I hardly doubt the fan is exceeding 700 Watts. The fuse in the mains plug is 13 amps, far higher than even a short will draw hence the device itself blows up and trips your house out.
That 13 amp fuse shouldn't be in there which, since it is too high an amperage it'll cause issues internally if the fan draws too much current, the fan will blow up and trip the trip switches in the house. If the fuse is a 3amp then that should be all is needed. 13amp fuses are for cookers ideally, that kind of thing, most items will need 3amp or 5 amp fuses. That fuse will not blow as it's rating is too large. Go online and work out how to find the right fuse. For example:
13amp fuses for anything rated 700Watts to 3000 watts. I hardly doubt the fan is 700+watts.
3amp fuses for TV, lamps, PC, mixer, blender, fridge, freezer, power drill, jigsaw, soldering iron etc.
The fact the mains plug has a 13amp fuse in is why it goes bang internally and the fuse isn't blown on the mains plug. The draw of the fan is higher than it should take but less than 13 amps. So change that dam fuse.
The calculation of which fuse to use in the UK is this Watts / Voltage from mains = amps.
In other words, if something is rated 300Watts then this:
    300 watts / 240 volts (UK Mains Supply) = 1.25 amps
rated as 650 Watts then this:
    650 watts / 240 volts (UK mains supply) = 2.7 amps
as you can see, in both instances, 3 amp fuses is all you need.
700 Watts / 240 volts (UK mains supply) = 2.92 amps, in this situation, if you have a 5 amp fuse then use that, recommendations now is that you would use a 13 amp fuse though I advise against that if you have 5 and 10 amp fuses.
    Rated at 3,000 Watts:
    3,000 Watts / 240 volts (UK mains supply) = 12.5 amps
THE DYSON AM07 fan that you have only has a power consumption of 56 Watts.
Thus: 56 watts / 240 volts (UK mains supply) = 0.23 amps so only a 3 amp fuse is needed.
You can still buy packs of 3, 5, 10 and 13 amp fuses in a mixed packet.
Ergo, the cause of the fault? USER ERROR. User using a 13amp fuse on the device thus removing fuse protection, consistent plugging in and turning on with consistent bangs and tripping the trip switches.

I can easily see why urine would be far worse than tap water.
Urine has a higher concentration of salt compared to tap water, which makes urine more ionized than tap water. The more ionized a water solution is (through any kind of salt), the more conductive it becomes, and (as an added bonus) it also becomes more corrosive.
EDIT: Also, while air is a great insulator, it can become conductive if there’s a high enough voltage difference across it between two points. The voltage difference required increases with the distance between the two points, which is why lightning strikes require *millions* if not *billions* of voltage difference between the sky and the ground.
In any case, that bang was ElectroBOOM-worthy! 🤣

Sometimes fake plugs have bypassed the fuse in the plug.
The reason why phone cameras see IR is that it doesn't have that good IR filter the more expensive DSLR cameras have._

Excellent video as always Vince. I just wanted to say that I’m a tree cutter working for the electricity board. We clear all the trees that grow near the hi voltage overhead cables. We’re not allowed to have fires and burn the branches we cut purely for the reason that the carbon particles in the smoke can conduct the electricity back down to earth and perhaps harm or kill someone.
Just thought it was an interesting little fact because of what you found in the fan.
Thanks again for the great videos, keep them up 👍

Great video Vince, loved seeing you playing about those live wires. I can see you use "Head & Shoulders" so go for the T.V. roll. Perhaps you could be on the "Repair Shop" as a guest appearance! On a serious note. Playing about with electrical pieces of equipment without knowing fully as to what you're doing is perhaps something the T.V. companies wouldn't want to get involved with. But mending electronic toys and games etc. could be something they might go for.
As others have said well deserved Vince. Now, go get them 'Japanese Pliers' I told you about.

Good news! Do you remember that I told you a few months ago, to seek a TV for if they will be interested to make a fixing things show with you? Well I predicted your fate, don't you think? I don't think that fan is BLDC rather than asynchronous AC one with different tabs for speed, if it was BLDC it would be noisyer (similar buzz like drones on low RPM speed) because of the PWM controler switching frequency. The PSU is not isolated (can't see a transformer on the board) so it is transformerless PSU so NO touchy - touchy ;)

Agree with others - get a variac! Conductive coatings can be an issue! Once had an epoxy glue become conductive on an old. CGA monitor series (showing my age) - would alter the gun bias and cause interesting effects. Great fix Vince. If the "TV" people are on the level, they won't require money from YOU - lots of scams out there.)

Also on the safety side of things Vince, if a 100w fan turns up with a 13A fuse in the plug (like the last one)..change it for something sensible like 1A or 3A.
    13x240= 3.1kW. A fan doesn't need that.

They're probably buying the mains leads in bulk with the fuse already fitted, and the devices themselves will have an internal fuse that's adequately sized since fuses in the mains plug are pretty much a UK thing only and nobody makes appliances for just one country. So the only thing the fuse protects is the mains lead itself.

Dyson ?, very overrated and overpriced the design is very good but when a £20 fan does what a Dyson will do with lower running costs i will stay away from them . All that tech just means more to go wrong , KISS , keep it simple stupid , and no , i am not a ludite , just practical , a bit like Apple phones

I commented because he said it got weed on. I thought about gatoraid.
Also congrats, Vince. I thought I was subed, but I now am. I have been watching you for a couple months now (wow that sounds creepy).
As for your offer. I would look at the platform, producers, along with the other factors that will be with it. I would also consider how much input/control they are offering. With that information, I would think about the difference possibilities that would be possible. One factor might ruin the outcome for the future after, and it could turn you off from opportunities after. On the other hand it could make your future amazing. If you only look at doing a short series, perhaps one season, and it is good, but not good enough for a second season. You will learn some great information about video production, and have some great stories to tell. That is especially if that’s what you are expecting.
Don’t let fear stop you from doing something, except for something that is not good. Once again congratulations.

All camera's can see IR (InfraRed) from remotes. The problem is everything gives off infrared light because it's heat radiation. So most cameras have an IR-filter to get beter colorbalance. The front facing camera on a smartphone usually doesn't have a filter, so they can be useful to see if IR is being broad cast. The back facing camera usually does have a filter though. Not having an IR filter gives very muddy colors as all that extra red needs to be balanced out afterwards.

A couple of obs if I may. What you were talking about at the beginning, apropos the 0v reference on the board could float around because the mains earth isn't connected, isn't true, the mains Neutral and Earth should be at the same potential, unless your house system has a wiring fault. The Earth and Neutral wires are connected together at, I believe, your meter or the utility fuse. Secondly, when you showed a close up of the cleaned mains input connections, it seemed clear to me that there had, as you suggested, been sparking as evidenced by the actual erosion of the board. Although PCB design guidelines suggest mains lines should be separated by at least 5mm, It is also standard practice to route a (1mm?) slot between the tracks also. It's my experience that once there has been sparking on a board, as you say, the carbon deposits just make the problem worse.

Guy Martin wasnt very keen on his TV Career he found it hard to talk to the camera and not a person, he would have to get someone to stand around it. Quite similiar in a fashion he was a succesful motorbike racer and you busted moves on your skateboard, he currently works as a mechanic keeping people moving, and you once worked as an Telephone engineer keeping people talking, He builds things and restores, you fix things and restore, only difference is your OK talking to a camera you do it for us lot weekly. Would love to see you hit the 1 million mark, You never ask people to like and subscribe your just you which I admire, Great video as always.

Cat pee is incredibly conductive. So you are correct that it has been sparking for a while, then the carbonization between the two terminals for the AC line input, tracked and shorted.
Strange the plug fuse didn't blow though...
