My grandfather was Native American, and he stressed that the only way to find your seat was riding bareback so you could connect with your horse. I still prefer to ride bareback.

Your grandfather was right! I really dislike saddles for most purposes, and I try to not use 1. Most of the time there's no reason to use 1, so when I do need to it feels really foreign. Like Santiago said, they create a huge disconnect between the horse and rider. Many sunny days riding to you!

I agree with him. I rode as a child and most of the time it was bareback. I did not realize how it was preparing me to have a good seat and feel so much in the horse’s movements.

He was right, having "my" horse at camp get a sensitive spot, likely from poor quality girth and having to ride barebacks all two weeks was the best lesson, ever, and incredibly bonding experience. Nobody else was brave enough to ride this mare bareback as she not only spooked easily (I mean , turkeys scare me too, girl..) but her withers were so sharp I felt I was going to fall apart at the crotch😂
However, my skinny ass must not be a pleasant experience on horse's spine so I keep my bareback riding to draft horses who have enough muscle and fat on as not to feel my tailbone on their spines.

Apollo looks like a candidate of the Royal Stables. He's unbelievably magnificent now and probably knows it as well. So well fed and groomed. He's really living the good life.

I absolutely loved riding bareback. Me and my girlfriends would get home from school and on the weekends get our horses (usually bareback) and meet at our meeting field. We did everything with our horses. Swimming, camping, pulling each other on sleds. When we stayed at each other houses we took our horses. They all got along great because they were together so much. It was great growing up in the country and having horses. That was when your we could be gone all day as long as we were back by dark and our parents didn’t worry.

WOW Santiago!! Apollo looks so fabulous, like a regal destrier of old, carrying his Knight into battle...what a beauty he's become 😍

You look good on Apollo without the accoutrements .... and so does Apollo.
Ireland looked very much at home on her au naturel pony.
What a beautiful image and you could tell Apollo was enjoying it and very comfortable with the idea.
(Interestingly, I woke up today wishing I could just sit on a horse, bareback. The horse's heat, movements, energy can be very healing. Thanks for this beautiful memory.)

I learned to ride at age 12 without a saddle by necessity because we were poor and couldn’t afford a saddle for the two horses we were given. I did everything including trail riding and jumping with no saddle. I gained amazing balance and strength in my legs and in my low back for the 6 years I had those horses. When I was in my 20’s I bought a newly broke Egyptian Arab/Quarter horse mix and an english saddle and finally learned how to ride that way. I still loved to ride bareback though as it provided such a great connection with my horse that I was missing when in the saddle. So I understand what you are referring to in the difference between riding bareback vs with a saddle. Everyone who rides should learn bareback first.

I like riding bareback the best, for all the reasons you describe. I felt I was a better rider because I could feel the movement and rythym better.
I would have liked to see how you mounted! I imagine you had to get a leg up.
Apollo moved so beautifully, so collected and graceful. The years of training and conditioning have really paid off. Physically he looks well muscled up and like a mature horse in absolute prime condition.

It's amazing the power you feel when you ride bareback. Every muscle movement the horse does, you feel through your whole body. The trick is to try and get that same awareness with a saddle between you and the horses back. It can be done!! The more you ride, remember this feeling, of being aware of when he lifts his front leg without looking down at his shoulder to see which leg it is. And try and say it out loud. Right, Left, Right, Left. You will eventually find that you can and will have some of that connection again. I do have a question though, with the weight that is a Shire, even doing Dressage, why doesn't Apollo have clips on his shoes anymore? I ask this because even other breeds that aren't Shires have toe clips. Thank you for your time and consideration of my concerns and questions. Best Regards from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

The clips on the shoes are more of a farrier preference depending on that they feel the horse needs in the moment. One month he might have them, next showing cycle he might not. Just depends. Thanks for watching

I am giggling a bit, as kid's we rode bareback all the time. Sometimes in shorts and bare feet too and didn't think anything of it. It was quick, spontaneous, fun and the horse's were used to it. Of course, looking back it did have risk as all active outdoor activities do. No helmets back then. It felt amazing to feel the horse beneath you and the wind in your hair. Thank the Lord for keeping us safe. Great memories! Apollo is looking superb as always. I love it that Ireland love's the world of horse's too! Have you ever considered Liberty training with Apollo? He has a great temperment for it.

Ha, great story. Yes I grew up in the 80’s no helmets, no seat belts, no baby car seats and not a care in the world! How did we ever survive ?!? 😂🤣

Yes! 😁 I understand perfectly! Cherish those memories, they are precious. Thank you for your posts. That means you grew up before cell phones and computers when kid's played outside and found ways to amuse themselves ..👌

All riders should learn to ride bareback, and do it regularly, or at least get rid of the stirrups. Nothing feels as good as the connection with your horse, and your seat improves immensely! I love it, and I never use a saddle unless I have to for some reason!
