You don't have to use that much Draino. Put some pebbles in the pan, put a big glass bowl or steel bowl on the pebbles, put some rocks in the bowl to weigh it down. Now you don't need as much Draino in the pan.
(The pebbles are there for the draino to get in between the bowl and the pan).
OMG! Don't wash it out in the sink! Wipe it out with a paper towel and through it away so it goes to a landfill rather than the water system.
Ugh! You're right. I try to think of such things and I didn't. I'm sorry.
@@xetaprime don't feel too bad. I used to work in hazardous waste regulation. We all need to be thinking this way, though, since corporations can't be bothered to care.
Well where does draino usually end up?
Thank you so much for sharing your love of cookware!
Thanks for making this video I didn't want to throw away my grandma's cranberry dutch oven. Alot of the teflon is already gone and it seems to be glossy underneath! Can't wait to try this with the rest and see how it turns out
Glossy! Very cool and good luck!
This was incredible! and I have the 9' non-stick too and I'm reluctant to use all that Draino and just have a score inside!!! I love the how the bottom came back to its glory! that's real talent how you loveingly use the "Mother" cream and bring it back to life WoW!
Thanks Samantha. The things we do right? :) I can never say enough about 'Mothers Mag' It's awesome stuff!
I didn’t even know that they had a nonstick range. Growing up I always thought that’s the whole attraction of the range was that they had that polished, glassy, transparent appearance. I’m kinda disturbed by the nonstick. LOL. Was really satisfying watching you get all that off. Looking forward to part 2!
Only the frying pans had the nonstick coating that went up the sides. The pots had the coating on the bottom and about an inch or so up the sides. Most of the pot was still see through.
True. It would have been easier with a saucepan, and less volume too.
Ahh so nice to see a video It is very satisfying I did this to both of my large visions stock pots :) I was impatient and only let it sit for like 2 days it still worked
How have the stockpots performed since removing the nonstick? I may try and make some eggs this morning.
Thank you! Worked for my Visions too!
Excellent! :)
This worked fantastic! I had a vision pot that I tried this with, and the teflon actually rinsed out!!! No scrubbing at all. The bottom wasn't etched so that helped.
Awesome! I'd love to find one that isn't etched.
I just wished I had taken a video of it because that was cool as hell. I have a whole cranberry set, and it was about half etched and half not. Picked them up at an estate sale, so it's unknown if the pieces were bought separately.
Lol loved your reaction when it peeled off
:)
I just did this and it worked amazing! Thank you! However I was removing the Teflon from the visions 5L dutch oven. Underneath my Teflon was smooth glass! No etching... I'm not sure why? Thanks again!
I'm glad! ...and awesome that it's smooth! Wish there was an easy way to tell before stripping.
I got a 5L cranberry visions and I did easy off the teflon, I still have a little to get off, i haven't used it yet to cook not sure what I will cook in it yet. Thanks for the video, I am excited to see part 2 and how that turns out
Easy Off might have been an easier choice. I should have bought both at the same time. Cool that it works. Good luck with the 5L. Think I'll try and cook eggs this morning. It's always eggs :)
Thank you so much for this video. I bought a Visions 4.5L Dutch oven at Goodwill for $5 and it has a teflon coating on the bottom. I was scrapping it off with a putty knife, but this Drano method is way better. I was sad to see that it is etched underneath and even consulted a glass-blowing shop to learn how to polish it, which is a multi-step process, and hard to do in the bottom of a concave surface like a pan.
🤔 Umm… the active ingredient in both Drano liquid drain cleaner and EasyOff oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide - aka: lye.
This would have been much easier done by immersing the pan into a tub of lye solution - same as is done for stripping a piece of old cast iron down to bare metal for re-seasoning.
Sounds good. I've never used a lye bath. Maybe time to set one up :)
LoL! You came close, first by leaving the pan sit for several days filled with lye (under the brand name Drano) and then by slathering the bottom with lye (under the brand name EasyOff).
About two months ago I decided I did not like the uneven seasoning on the inside of a large cast iron skillet I’ve had for ages (it was my mom’s). I left it sit for a few days with the Lowe’s store brand drain cleaner (it’s lye at same strength as Drano, and much cheaper!). It did the job… but occasional slop overs started to lift the seasoning on the non-cooking surfaces of the pan. So… I bought a cheap plastic storage bin and used a crystal drain opener (also lye) and soaked the whole thing. It’s now nicely Re-seasoned, something you won’t be doing with your pan 😇
Oh! And just yesterday I saw a mention of fume-free EasyOff - it is NOT lye based.
I tried this on a big Dutch oven I got at Goodwill for $3.99, and it WORKED beautifully! I soaked it 7 days, just because I didn't get around to checking it, and it peeled right off just like in the video. The inside surface next to the etched glass was navy blue. Thank you so much. I probably would have tossed this pan if not for this method.
Yay! Let us know how it goes after you use it. Good, bad, would love to know.
Wow this is the first time I’ve ever seen a glass pan how does it hold up without cracking wow
Check out my other Visions videos. It's made of a special glass/ceramic.

Thanks.
I been using pumice zep hand cleaner with a magic eraser and a bit of elbow grease on mine, cleans them up like new 😎👍
I've never heard of zep. Will check it out.
👍
And now you have a bigger Visions skillet with a smooth-ish bottom! A nice one of a kind pan you made yourself!
Think you'll do the same to your metal nonstick pans in the future?
That was one of the reasons I wanted to do this. The last smooth 10" I saw on ebay was maybe a year ago and it looked chipped so I passed on it. I think the drano was starting to affect the stainless steel after 5 days so IDK on the metal nonstick yet...
@@xetaprime Yeah, I asked about that on the Chowhound forums and it may not be a good idea. I wonder if diluting it a little bit would help?
Hi, I just tried easy off, I guess the old version, it's a yellowish liquid that comes with a brush, I "painted" it well and had it with an aluminon foil on the balcony for one whole day, I brushed it again and left it another day, finally added some hot water and then I scrapped it with an aluminum sponge and It came out it. It didn´t peel like yours but It came out. Thank you for your video.
I don't know the Easy Off version with a brush. At least it worked! That's all that matters :)
@xetaprime it is probably the first presentation of it in the US but it has always been like that here in Colombia
Well this would have been much more helpful when I saw a beautiful huge stockpot (visions too!), But I didn't purchase it due to the peeling "non-stick" coating. Dang it! But now I know for any future purposes. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
I used to work in chemical research and if you want to speed up a chemical reaction, a gentle(!!!) heat such as a scorching hot sidewalk will do the job.
And by gentle I mean don't put it over direct heat.
Yeah, I was sure the coolness of the outside porch was affecting the drano. It's always something! :)
Right? :0
Is there any Indian substitute... This is really amazing gel .. I really want one but this isn't available.. plz let me know
Not sure what you mean exactly. You want a Visions skillet? I'm unsure of a different remover. No Visions on ebay India?
Im having trouble finding part 2.
Me too
Did it stay cloudy like that?? Did you do anything to make the teflon area less cloudy??
This one had etched glass, causing the cloudiness. Seasoning helped, but it's not clear like the original version. I have heard some with teflon are clear/smooth underneath, I've just never seen one.
Is it safe to use the pot after having draino sit it in for days? Even after non-stick is gone?
I think washing and boiling water repeatedly will work. But you never really know without lab equipment so there's that... :)
Would you happen to know how to re-teflon the pan?
Sorry, not a clue :(
I just bought a piece with nonstick inside no starches or anything would it be safe to use? Why take the non stick off? Is it unsafe to cook in?
That's a loaded question as many people want to get away from non-stick coatings. The coating on my pan was in horrible shape and I did this as a project on purpose. If the coating is in 'really' good shape then I'd probably use it. Older non-stick as these though, are deemed unsafe. I believe these were coated with 'SilverStone'.
From google: "All nonstick cookware coatings, including the popular Teflon, T-fal, SilverStone and Calphalon, use PFOA as a component of their manufacturing. When overheated (to temperatures of about 680°F), these coatings release toxic gases, which have been known to kill pet birds."
Note: Many advertise PFOA free now.
Now I translated here I understood I didn’t know that Visions came with non-stick Teflon, I usually avoid this Teflon I saw an American film about old Teflon with pfoa and I am afraid of contradictions
Teflon is usually not harmful but it is important not to get it too hot. Teflon manufacturing is also very bad for the environment
Why Drano? Why not just use Easy Off on the whole thing?
Ya know, I don't know. The thread I read was more Drano but Easy Off was used. If I'd purchased both at the same time I might have tried EO first... too late. Maybe EO would have worked better even?
Because I was about to do this, I’m going to try the easy off first since I have it. Thank you for the suggestion.
This worked so poorly in my case. The visions glass one has tiny bits of the coating in the pores and weirdly one burnt spot that was burnt and the worst coating before I drano'ed it, well, its also got the tiny bits of coating. On one stainless I have drano in, in a week+ it barely did anything. On the other SS one, between drano, me wire wheeling it and sanding it I removed all the non stick, but that pan is far from smooth or shiny, however I have yet to go to buffing wheel, polishing compound etc. Maybe it will get there. However it also had a little pit in it - a defect under the coating. IMHO, these companies picked the defective ones and coated those while selling the pristine ones as bare stainless without the non stick.
I'm sorry to hear that :( I've been tempted to try stripping stainless but haven't. After reading your experience maybe I won't :0
@@xetaprime Yea not worth it. I spent hours and hours and managed to get it off but still epic fail.
@@seshadrisrinath The thing we do ;)
Why does the inside of the skillet look frosted? TIA!
The frosting is a form of etching, so the non-stick coating adheres to the pans. I've heard there are some glossy underneath but I haven't found one.
for a moment I thought it was coated with Teflon, what was that? burned? a pity not to understand your language
It was Teflon
As Segatari said, Teflon. I think Dupont SilverStone was used in Visions.
Thanks for posting this. I have the 6 inch version of that pan, the teflon is scratched because an idiot (not me) used a metal utensil and scraped at the food burnt on the bottom, because he's an idiot and 1) burned the food on and 2) used a metal spatula to scrape it out. I think it will make a good baking pan if I can get the teflon off.
The little skillet is a wonderful pan! But you might find a nice one on ebay for close to the cost of a bottle of chemicals :)
Use isopropyl alcohol and it'll shine up like new
Good to know! I haven't tried that, thanks :)
Tried it in a metal pan. Drano ate the metal and the pan is ruined.
D'Ohhh!!! :(
Glad someone tried it. Now I know not to do it with my metal pans. Was yours stainless steel or aluminum?
How's this pan doing these days?
Weird that you should ask. I used it about 3 days ago. It's darker and is keeping the seasoning I guess because of the glass etching. I should do an update soon.
@@xetaprime Oh nice! What'd you cook in it?
Eggs big surprise. Where's the roll eyes emoji when you need it.
@@xetaprime Hahaha! You sure love your eggs.
Pollution
Aduh pake apa ini ya?
I have bessemer pan and i want to remove its coating but i think no brand like yours in Indonesia
@@annissafuadiyadachrie1349 same happened to me but I live in Colombia, I went with easy off (the oven cleaner) and I worked.
Dont use oven cleaner just put it in your oven and turn on the self clean setting and take the handle off ya dope it's usually plastic
These handles don't come off, don't have to come off. And my oven has no self cleaning mode :(
