When things go wrong on Lough Erne. (2018) #54

- Join us on a cruise across Lough Erne the broad lough all the way to Belleek. See what happens when things go wrong and how helpful we found people to be and of course how we got out of trouble on the lake. We negotiate changeable weather on Lough Erne and enjoy a cruise on an overcast day across lower Lough Erne (also called The Broad Lough) and safely into a superberb mooring in the Town of Belleek. It’s here that we confirm our suspicions, that the alternator isn’t charging our domestic batteries. Now our fridge runs off these same batteries and without them getting a charge we run the onerous risk of drinking warm beer. A fate I would not like to face.
It was here that we came face tp face with Northern Ireland’s well known hospitality. We had mentioned it in conversation with the barman in the Black Cat Cove pub in Belleek and almost immediately word spread around the bat that a tourist was in difficulty. Phone calls were made and flavors called in and the next morning a very good boat mechanic by the name of Justin arrived up to Driftwood and set about diagnosing the problem. Within a few short hours were wee up and running again. Justin is one of life’s gentlemen and we owe him and the staff and customers of the Black Cat Cove a big thank you
We headed out with our repaired alternator and a tail wind onto Lough Erne once again. The waves built as we made our way to Inishmacsaint island where a sheltered mooring in the lee of the wind would assure us of a tranquil night.
Check out our new shop at www.driftwood.tv/shop where you get your hands on our book 'Driftwood from the Shannon to the Marne' the humorous account of our first ever venture into the sea, and on to the French inland waterways.

I replace my impeller every YEAR ! It's such a vital part of the cooling system I'm surprised you left it so long . Love the videos.
Thanks Johnny, glad you like the videos. Everyone is different, and I would only replace an impeller if it has run dry for a period. I always carry two spare ones on board, and a new impeller is just as likely to wear out if it's run dry as an old one.

Ah I love it!! "There's the castle. I had a look at the picture and decided...you know what? I couldn't be arsed walking all the way up to look at it" Lol
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ye are class. Another absorbing video. Thanks for putting it up. It must be great to be able to visit so many of the bays and islands on Lough Erne. That option is rarely available on the Shannon lakes.
Glad this popped up. All so natural and lovely people. From Cornwall, liked the Shrimpers of course.
Glad you enjoyed it Butch78. We had Driftwood in Newlyn on our way to France. Cornwall is one of my favourite places 👍
Enjoy the videos keep them coming
Thanks Simon 👍
Love the video's Mar'n'Harry. May your God go with you.
+Liam Hill: Thanks so much Liam really glad you like them 👍
Glad you've got to Belleek, it's lovely. Keep the videos coming. Loved the exit dance by the way!! 😃
We're in Ballyconnell heading back up after two weeks down your kneck of the woods. Maybe catch up with you along the way!
Chris Dougherty: Thanks Chris, might see you on the lake we will be there enjoying the great Northern Ireland hospitality for a bit yet 👍
Just a question, why do you cruse with your fenders overboard. You don't need them, they just cause more drag and increase compunction.
Hi Mark,
On inland waterways as opposed to the sea you find yourself using your fenders a lot more. That's because on inland waterways you have much shorter distances between moorings. But also along the way you have to pass through locks where your fenders are also needed. Sailing boats would normally lift their fenders because they heel over, and even then they are only used on the open lakes. On a cruiser you've no heeling so it's normal practice to leave them down and keep the decks clear. Hope that explains it.

Brilliant video. Enjoying the Lough Erne playlist. What charts are those and where can they be purchased? I do prefer a hard copy over the plotter.
Thanks Diane, yes I agree you can't beat paper charts. I got mine from www.iwai.ie/shop hope that helps 👍
@@DriftwoodBoatBlog Thank you so much for your kind reply. I've just ordered a book of charts and a map from IWAI.
I know this is an old video so it's a long shot but what is the chart book your using for lough erne? Would love to get one.
Hi Jason, the charts are available from iwai.ie/shop
I think the one I was using was a large book type that covered the Shannon too👍
