  • December may not be your first choice when you think about, when to go boating on the Irish waterways. But while it can be cold, and it can be wet, and you will need to wrap up well, it is still another beautiful season in it's own right.
    Check out our shop at www.driftwood.tv/shop where you get your hands on our book "Driftwood from the Shannon to the Marne" the humorous account of our first ever venture into the sea, and on to the French inland waterways.

      Hi Diane, and thanks for asking. Yes we're doing fine. We haven't made a video in a while, but we hope to have one shortly. Thing is we set out to show off the Irish Waterways and we feel that we have largely achieved that. Next step will be to show the Royal canal, grand canal and the River Barrow 🤞🤞🤞

    Holy God!, as Miley would have said; I had to pause the clip and pull a blanket over me. I've cruised in march and I know how cold it gets.
    In fact I rolled ( in an upright stance) off the finger jetty in Portumna harbour in mid march. Straight into the water 🥶.
    I never let go the rope, one hand for yourself and one for the ship. My buddy split his sides laughing up at the bow as I climbed up the ladder on the pier end. I had Three Adams apples when I got out!

    Hi guy's, joe here, love your blogs, great to see ye back on the water, new to all this, my wife and i bought our first boat a few months ago a Broom 30 skipper and your video's are a great way of learning about the shannon waterways. What advice would you give to beginners to help us on our merry way. WE are moored in killaloe cheers.👍

      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  2 роки тому

      Hi Joe and thanks for watching the videos and congratulations on your new investment. Best bit of advice I can give you is not to bring your better half out on the lake if the wind is up. Ladies generally get put off boating if they get a bad experience on rough water. It's important that you both continue to enjoy the water together. 👍
      Hope to see you both on the water some day. H&M

    Happy New Year to you both. Five hours on the Shannon/Erne Waterway doesn't seem too bad at all. We are renting from Belturbet in the summer, think we'll head down the Shannon but guessing it takes a lot longer in the summertime. Keep up the great blogs, really enjoy the ones when you go off the beaten path, stay safe.

    Thanks for the update. Brave souls!! Some of the bridges you passed under look a little low. What is the air draft of your boat?

    • @DriftwoodBoatBlog
      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Robert, with the windscreen still up it's about 3 Mtrs. We can take the windscreen down if necessary which reduces the draft a bit further.

      @@DriftwoodBoatBlog I have a fixed airdraft of a fraction under 3 meters, so it might be tricky to navigate over there. Is there many variations in water depth during the year?

    Hello both, we've really enjoyed your videos. About 18 months ago we rented a boat from the Carrick Craft people in Bellanaleck (one of their largest ones), and cruised down as far as Leitrim. It was mid October and we met very few other boats. We've recently bought a much smaller boat (18 foot Campion Explorer 552) to use locally on the river Bann, and the coast. I watched one of your earlier videos where you mentioned hearing the keel touch bottom, and we are a bit concerned about trying the Shannon/Erne system (we'd trailer it over) in our boat as it has a stern drive. What sort of draft does your boat have, and what's the minimum depth of water you've sailed over on the canal? Do you have any plans to try the Bann/Lough Neagh system for future adventures? Pete & Cathy in Ballymoney.

    • @DriftwoodBoatBlog
      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  Рік тому

      Hi Pete & Cathy,
      Congratulations on the new investment, hope it will give you both many hours of cruising pleasure. We draw a little over a meter. There's usually plenty of depth in the canal for us. I wouldn't rule out any waterways, so you'd never know! Thanks for watching the videos.

    That waterway is nice any time of the year, thanks for sharing. How practical would it be to fit a solid fuel stove in the boat, it would make winter cruising very cosy? I wonder what's the story with the decommissioned lifeboat?

    • @DriftwoodBoatBlog

      @@DriftwoodBoatBlog Me and stoves.....I may be watching too many narrowboat vlogs.....🤣🤣
      I think that lifeboat may be Spirit. It was the prototype for the Mersey Class Lifeboat and was never in service. Over 10 years ago it was in private ownership in Sligo and operated angling charter etc, it was later based in Westport. As usual I stand to be corrected on this. I must stop for a look the next time I'm on that road.
