Enniskillen on Lough Erne, a boating viewpoint

- Enniskillen is the largest town in Co Fermanagh and also the largest town on Lough Erne. It is situated at the narrows between upper and lower lakes, so it's ideally placed to entice boaters off the river and into the pubs and restaurants. Like Blakes of the hollow where you're sure of a good Guinness! And lest I forget they have one of those Game of Thrones doors. Ye you know the ones I'm talking about!
There is more to Enniskillen than just good pubs though, and in the interests of decency we gorged ourselves in Tickity Boo Ice-cream parlour. All in the interest of seeing what Enniskillen has to offer.
The weather for the most part was mixed at best. And the forecast thunder storms struck with vengeance when they did eventually arrive.
Enniskillen Castle dominates the river as you approach from the south. It's a fine castle and worth taking a look around. They do tours but we didn't partake (preferring to check out the pubs instead!)
Check out our new shop at www.driftwood.t... where you get your hands on our book 'Driftwood from the Shannon to the Marne' the humorous account of our first ever venture into the sea, and on to the French inland waterways.

The wind vane is the land mark for route to Enniskillen. We just traveled Quivey to Enniskillen and back on my sister and brother in law boat.
Nice trip, one of my favourite parts of the waterway.
Mageesits a great pub
Look forward to seeing where you get off to next.
Us too John 😀
My favourite place second to Enniskillen is Carrybridge. I have fond memories from there when I was but a child. It is undergoing a big refurbishment. Looking forward to revisiting next year!
Ye I'm with you on that, Carrybridge is a lovely spot, we've enjoyed many a good night there. 👍
H&M
Charlies Bar, The Blakes and The Crowes Nest are lovely places to have good times, good pints and of course there’s a good craic
Can't disagree with you there Ralph 👍
I'm with you on Blake's - excellent pub - Charlie's is a good sports bar and the craic is good there too. On the shore near Bellanaleck is 'The Mooring's" - Nice place to moor up and chill by the river - decent reasonably priced food and good outside area.
Hi James, yes we've stopped at the moorings a few times, one of my favourite stops. We called in there the year they first opened the canal and got a great NI welcome. Dave The barman (sadly passed away since) was a great ambassador for NI. Hopefully 2021 will be a good year for boating. Think we all need it 👍
Did this trip from Quivy marina 3 Halloween breaks ago. We were on my sister's boat.
Ah good, hope that it brought back some good memories 👍
Charlie's bar does a great pint,
I;ll make it a mission to check Charlie's bar the next opportunity 👍
@@DriftwoodBoatBlog its opposite Blake's of the hollow, the craic with the locals will make your night
Sounds like my kind of pub 👍
Great blog , thanks
I always find it confusing after naans island too going down river as apposed to heading up river. the Erne has a few spots like that. I'm looking at the map and it doesn't correspond the same with my eyes in real time. After marker 32B1, I Head towards Knockninny and then turn north once i see the all illusive 32A2 marker. You get a pair of binoculars with the hire boat, but they are of no use for distances. so, I invested in a decent pair this year. I do not like not being able to see markers, it adds to the anxiety. I always like to be on course.
Back in 2007, we were on the Erne and heading to Inishcorkish , which is beside Naan Island, According to the map, it had a pub on it, Got there, and it was closed and up for sale with the jetty submerged and broken. Had to go back to Share Holiday Marina in the near dark with a flashlight gaffer taped to the bow. I now always bring gaffer tape now, and it came into use again last year on Derg. as we had a hose pipe "header pipe" split and engine started to overheat. Limped into Garrykennedy with our botch job. Just in time for the all Ireland replay. Carrickcrafts Mechanic came down from Banagher with-in the hour and replaced the pipe as we we having pints
Love your gaffer tape story. My father reckoned that every man only needed two items in his tool kit: A roll of gaffer tape, and WD40. If it moved and it shouldn't, put gaffer tape on it. If it's doesn't move, and it should, put WD40 on it!
Yes a good Pr of binoculars is great to have on the occasions that you need them. Keep safe. H&M
In this Pubs we spent some lovly hour’s, had good food, good pints and good craig: The Crowes Nest, Blakes of the hollow and Charlie’s Bar
I agree with you fully! I enjoyed a few creamy pints in all three. Couldn't knock em! H&M
My dream is to cruise from Killadeas to Beleek
Well Kalevi, people who don't have dreams, can never have a dream come true. I hope your dream comes true some day. H&M
Best pub in Enniskillen is between Granny Annies and Charlie’s bar. Coming from an Enniskillen man
13:33 My fav restaurant Cafe Merlot and pub Blake’s of the hollow
Ye I,m defo with you on Blakes of the Jollow, best pint of Guinness in Enniskillen 👍
Really Love the videos...hope to see you on water sometime...can I ask what your air draft is? We are looking at bringing a boat with approx 11ft (3.45m) air draft from Enniskillen to Lanesborough at end of June but looking at your bridge videos this could be an issue. See IWAI are saying approx 3.2m but would welcome your view too. Thanks
Hi Helena, and thanks for your kind comment. Air draft at most of the bridges is never an exact science. That's because water levels vary, and the bridges are arched and WI take a min height over approximately a 3M beam. So your boat could be a little higher in the centre. Given the water levels at present are very low I'm sure you would have a very good chance of passing beneath even the lowest bridge (at Ballinamore town). The problem is that while you're enjoying the Shannon, if we get a lot of rain, which we are known for in this corner of the world, you might find that you cannot make the return journey. Now that mayor may not be a problem for you either. Personally we base our boat at different marinas all over the waterway. Moving base every year or two gives us a great chance to explore more new place. Hope that's of some help, happy boating. H&M
At times it looked a bit complicated to navigate to the right destination. On map it looked easy but watching on video it is a different story. Is there a devise such as a Garmin or Tom Tom Sat Nav for Shannon-Erne River? I heard about a waterway sat-nav called 'Waternav' for UK but not sure whether it also covers Ireland as well. It could be a good devise to have on a boat. But I guess you cannot go wrong with the help of the 'markers' along the way. Which lough do you consider the most demanding and one that boaters should keep really focused on? For me, it is the first time that I seen a 'No Wake Sign'. I think it means the a boat must go slow enough to not cause any wake behind it. The area around Killyhevlin hotel and also Enniskillen looks gorgeous to explore and spend the night at. A pub that was recommended to me and my family is the Horseshoe and Saddlers. So it is in my plans whenever I will visit Enniskillen. Hopefully next summer.
Hi Mark, Yes to be honest it can get a bit confusing at times, I find that rotating the charts to match your direction of travel helps. But keeping an good eye out for markers is very important. I know that on more than one occasion I've come close to missing one. There are electronic charts available of all the inland waterways but I'm not too well up on them.
There used to be stickers on boats that said "No Wash Zone" I used to say "you'd think they would smell?" But that's just me being sarcastic! I think we popped into the Horseshoe & Saddlers and yes it was a nice spot. The Killyhevlin is a nice spot for food too.
Harry
Hi Mark, check out "Navionics" app for UK & Ireland. It's fantastic for Erne & Shannon systems. Poor on the Shannon-Erne Canal as it isn't mapped out.
Guru maps works quite well and is a free ap. It names the islands and shows your location on the lake provided you have 4g.
Hi really enjoying your videos just wondering what do you think you spend on fuel each year on average I understand you have twin engines, would it be half with a single engine set up . Regards albert and Ann
Hi Albert & Ann, I did a bit of research for you on this and so far this year we spent about €185 on diesel. And yes you could divide that by two for a single engine boat. And our engines are both six cylinders where as a four cylinder engine would be more economical again. Delighted that you enjoy the videos 👍
Another lovely vlog guys. A small question. I am looking to get myself a narrowboat to "wander" the Irish waterways, do you think that I could travel the areas that you have so beautifully photographed?
Hi Guido, Thanks so much for your comments, and yes you certainly would be able to "wander" the waterways here with a narrowboat. In fact there are quite a few people here doing just that. You would need to be cautious on the large lakes but that is just a matter of watching the forecast and waiting for the right opportunity. Plus with a narrowboat you could explore the River Barrow (Just beautiful) as well as all the canals too 😀
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. As I'm currently "down south" on the Waterford coast, I was thinking of starting on the Barrow and going on from there. Just got to get the house sold and I'll be on my way. Good luck.
+Guido Fawkes 👍
I love your accent
I am just looking your blog, we want to get there
I'm sure that you will some day. 👍
Enjoyed your video, well done. Hoping to get up to Lough Erne before the end of the summer with my tiny Shetland 498, tell me, is it possible to park up for the night on any jetty or do you need to book/pay in advance, thanks
Hi N.I Detecting, Oh yes you can just pull up at any public jetty (once there is the room which there normally is) There's no charge either but you must not stay for more than five days. Hope you have a great trip 👍
@@DriftwoodBoatBlog Thanks, that's great! I probably wouldn't be staying any more than 2 night anyway, that's a pint I owe you if i ever bump into you, I don't mean with my boat lol Happy Cruising
Quick question.... When you moor up and go to explore a town / island etc. How do you make sure your boat is secure? I mean could some thief not just tow it away?
Howye, I've never known that to happen. I guess that they wouldn't get through the first lock, and on the river too many people know each other so it would stand out too much.
You can’t go wrong with Granny Annie’s
👍 Best decor I've ever seen in a pub 😁 makes for a good atmosphere.
Did I see someone not wearing LifeJackets? I got such a shock that I got out the Rosary beads!!!
Ha Brendan, one it was only Rosery beads that you got out!!!
@@DriftwoodBoatBlog Ooooh, you are awful, but I like you! lol
Marian, why don't you get those little travel wrist-bands from the pharmacy.
They put a little accupressure on the inside of the wrists, & help with motion sickness! I hate to see you not well when you're cruising!
If they helped with my fear of capsising I probably would take them!
Could I ask some advice. I was planning to canoe from upper Lough Erne to Lietrim village. How may locks would I pass through and how much are they. Is there anything I need to be aware of. Any advise would be appreciated. Chris.
Hi Chris, that would be a lovely journey to undertake. I'd keep in mind that there are not many places along the way you can get accommodation or food. Ballinamore, Ballyconnel, Keshcarrigan and kilclare are probably the only places where you can get shops and/or B&B. You have 16 locks but if you can carry your canoe around the locks you won't have any charges. Would love to hear how your trip goes so please let us know. 👍

Hi Harry. Could you please tell me the output of the Solar panel’s you fitted to your boat. Roy
Hi Roy, they are 2 x 175Amp panels. Importantly they are Mono chrisaline not poly. Hope that helps.
Thanks Harry. I spoke with you at Carrick on Shannon a couple of months ago.
My friend has the agency for mipv flexible solar panels (see them on the internet)& is going to sort me out with something
Hi Charlie what's the length of your boat
Well the boat measures 20.5 Mtrs, but who's Charlie 🤣
That should be 10.5 Mtrs 🤣
Dolakas, Cafe Merlot or Francos
+Ross Millar Hi Ross, yes Cafe Merlot is certainly very popular. Booking is essential as we found out. Didn't get to eat there but I've heard nothing but good reports about it. Can't say I came accross Dolakas or Francos, but I'll make a point to visiting them in the future.
Charlie's or Blakes of the Hollow.
Agreed, been to both 👍
@@DriftwoodBoatBlog I should have said Blake's o' the holla. Just local spake lol
Why is it never a woman doing "Naked Yoga" 😂
Ye, it's a cruel world 😂
