Love the BMW M140i because yes it has rwd drive fun and you can have flappy paddle auto or manual. It isn't the fastest but has a very strong very tunable 3.0l engine and I've seen examples that without too much in the way of modifications by specialist companies the average man can still get around 450 to 460 bhp out of one and around 500lb.ft of torque reliably aswell and I've seen the 0 to 60 times on them plummet from 4.6 seconds to 3.4 when this happens enough to blow any current hyper hatch away and yet they're priced way more cheaply than merc or audi
Can't remember which channel did the video but there was a drag race where an untuned M140i beat an RS3 and A45 fairly comfortably. Beyond the launch, I'm pretty sure they're the quickest even without mods.
@@ApothecaryTerry spot on, after the launch is taken out the equation the drivetrain losses in the rs3 and a45 do impact their rolling race performance. They are more like GTvcars, I had one but it was very unengaging. Other than the straight line speed it was very meh, missed my Scirocco R and sold the BMW after 3 months
“Isn’t the fastest”!? Our perception of fast has been skewed so much, probably because of these hyper hatches. On any given street the M140i is likely to be the fastest/top 3 fastest cars there. 335bhp and 4.6 to 60 isn’t enough? I love to modify cars, but I’m not sure I’d bother to do too much with the BMs engine.

@ARD3N VXR they're known for being unreliable, theres a reason you don't see many on tracks. They're poor interior wise, they have a bit of a fan base but all the cars in this list are much better. Only thing going for the vxr is its quite good looking admittedly. Don't get so hurt by someone's comment. I've got an earlier M135i and these cars are the bargain's of the century easily! It's so much fun and was a cheap buy. Sounds great and isn't another boring 2.0 4WD soulless car...
Brilliant! Both cars I'm looking at got into the top 10. Civic Type R & Focus RS... this hasn't made the decision any easier as now I'm contemplating the M140 & A45 AMG... DAMN YOU JB! 😂
Drive them all! Out of those, I've driven the CTR and M140i, not the other 2. For me the M140i is a clear winner for public roads, the CTR would be the best track toy but fun is not what it does well, at all. A45 is great if you like big numbers, I've never seen the appeal though. RS might be great, the newer ST is quick but uninteresting, the older RS might be a bit more exciting. The M140i is a proper fun car though, perhaps a little demanding in terms of attention since the rear does like to go without much warning and the interior isn't great (although that applies to all 4 really), but I think it'd put the biggest smile on your face. That said, I reckon the RS might be the most special, whereas 99% of people won't even know the M140i isn't a diesel. Anyway, I probably should have left this comment at the 1st bit - drive them all! I've driven enough cars now to know that reviews very rarely correlate to how cars really feel, the perspective of automotive journalists is about as relevant as a guide on how to be a medieval chicken farmer, they only know how to floor it constantly.
M140i is also called the widow maker take liberties and it'll bite you! Out of them all for me has to be the A45 AMG. Great engine performance and insane handling lovely gearbox.
@Apothecary Terry I can't tell you how much I love this comment 😂. First up, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. It's awesome. I've always been a fan of a fast Ford. My dad had a Sierra XR4 when I was a kid, and I loved that car. So the RS is (for me) always one that's going to be on my mind. 350bhp, 4WD, 5 doors (I have kids now, so that's a factor as well) and a big boot. Then in the same breath I think "f*ck it, the kids aren't driving the car, it's mine" and my Hoonigan side comes put and I love the CTR 😂. I hadn't considered the M140 or AMG because of their badges. The AMG looks badass, but I've always had it in my head that the AMG is driven by drug dealers. The BMW however... a friend of mine had a 118 and the space in the back wasn't great (bringing the kids back into the equation) and the boot isn't as big as the RS... So yeah. I think I'm going to just have to drive them all, see which one feels better suited to my driving style and just go with it. Again, thanks for the kind reply, brother. All the best. 👍

What is most special about the M140i is that it has an engine way more capable than the already capable Golf R or Cupra. In fact, its 3 litre power plant is just as bulletproof as a 2JZ! In a lightweight hot hatch! The B58 found in it has already broken 930whp (1100 crank) on the stock internals! There's a German tuning company called Kotte Performance that has a big turbo stock internals M140i, with 800hp, plus, it has over 220,000kms on it (135k miles), without any issues so far. With new pistons and rods and some head work (leaving block and crank stock), it can reliably make well over 1000whp
Gotta love how whenever hot hatches and fast hatchbacks are listed its always the Seat Leon cupra, cant forget the Seat Ibiza cupra or even the cupra black
hey JB, ive got a request for a video, it will be boring but its becoming more urgent than ever.... ULEZ compliant cars (no payment), more and more cities in UK are introducing (or extending) ulez zones and while its cool to keep and 'normal' car for weekend blasts on B roads we need some options to drive to work, i recently started working in central bristol and its painful... what im spenind on ulez charges could go towards monthly payments on a used hybrid, need advice!
The cars in the video are the more interesting ones people might not have thought of. If you're including a Golf R, then the list is just any somewhat quick hot hatch that was over £30k new. That's a lot of cars...before you say it, the Golf R is quick off the line, but from 30-70 a bunch of the FWD ones can keep up, while round a track the R isn't high up the list, so it doesn't earn a place on sheer performance. I'm not saying people shouldn't consider the R, just that I think JB chose well in terms of content for the video.

Interesting that you prefer the A45 interior to the RS3. Merc interiors of that generation are possibly ahead of fake Audi exhausts in my list of things I hate about cars. While I also don't like the M140i interior, those things are properly rapid and a lot of fun too, it's between the M140i and GR Yaris for me. I want to like the Cupra R and Golf TCR but every version of that chassis I've driven has made me want to go home and spend 4 hours staring at my already dry paint to see if it gets more dry, for some extra excitement...but I still do want to give those versions a go (plus a Golf Clubsport) since on paper they're my sort of thing.
I like the A45 more for design, RS3 for all the rest! It’s just a shame the A45 isn’t very pretty… I think of the list outside of the GR I’d have the TCR
