Grim Dawn | Best Starter Class | Part 1 | June 2024

- Occultist is the best class for a new starter in my opinion.
Read on to find out why...
- Big damage skill (Dreeg's Evil Eye) unlocks with 1 point in mastery and can be heavily buffed very early in Act 1 with several boss-drop items that have 100% drop chance. Skill scales really well and remains great all the way to endgame.
- Another big damage skill (Doom Bolt) can be buffed to silly amounts of damage.
- Area damage skill (Bloody Pox) is strong and useful.
- Exclusive skill (Possession) provides damage absorption as well as damage buffs and 100% skill disruption protection.
- Class has two pets and a generic pet-buff skill (health, damage, speed, energy regen) so can be part of a strong pet build.
- Curse of Frailty is a very useful resistance reduction skill with an area effect.
- Blood of Dreeg provides great buffs including a massive amount of acid/poison resistance on its 2nd node.
- Occultist can be very useful as a support mastery for every other class in the game.

I have never tried this skill. thanks for pointing it out. It is impressive.
I was exactly the same, never tried it because I thought it looked weak and then I tried it about 2 years ago and found out I could one-shot most bosses in Normal - ua-cam.com/video/D--HpfP76us/v-deo.html
That Pusquil fight is why I play HC Veteran. He's not going to give up his tail so easy! Gotta work for it every time.
Season 6 would have pleased you greatly - difficulty turned up even higher.
Aw look it's a video about the best starter class. I didn't know Arcadelife was into Deathknight.... why is there an Occultist video here? Where's the Deathknight video? 😁
As soon as there's a single mastery called Death Knight, we'll let you know. It's all subjective; a more cynical person might think I posted this video just for controversy bait ;)
@@Arcadelife1 A more snarky person might point out that your video is titled "best starter class" and not best starter mastery. 😁
I honestly think the game is balanced well enough that any mastery can work as a "best starter". Well, any except Oathkeeper.
YAY!!!! Let's GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
The occultiat is also the frontman on the poster ;-) and thematically it fits the game so well.
Nice
My pref is Shaman and most of its variants.
Shout-out to the Primal Strike massive and the Briarthorn Protection League 👊🙂
I just started an occultist today. 16 raven, 12 mogdy's pact, 12 raging tempest. Farm 2 Salazar's blades and you are good to go.
There’s some Occultist variety right there. Have fun with it 👊🙂
I haven't played this for a bit. I might load it up again. Do I need to still use that loot color mod that makes things easier to identify loot or did they revamp how items look when they drop? (Have a new PC now so would have to install it again)
Still need the rainbow item filter mod.
@@Arcadelife1 how do you do that? is there a guide somewhere?
When a new patch come out, I reset/delete all my old saves (with stash and blueprints too). I often start with bloody pox / sigil occultist. No doubt this is my fav mastery in this game.
Thanks for the Occultist support - it's a great class!
The easiest/cleanest way to 'delete everything' is to just rename the save folder from 'save' to 'old_save_056' or whatever. I do that for every 'fresh start' video character to ensure it's a legit fresh start. The game creates the new 'save' folder if it can't find one when you start the game. And you don't lose your old characters if you ever want to go back to one of them.
@@Arcadelife1 thanks so much, maybe next Time. For the moment I like to play with a full reset. But who knows for the next patch or for the further expansion
@@materafa957 What I’m describing is a full reset. I don’t know how you’re doing it but the save-folder renaming resets everything every time.
@@Arcadelife1 ah ok, my bad. I delete the files in the directory (userdate/steam). It works too
I love love love occultist, but I don't know if I can face another character where Im smashing blood of dreeg constantly. I even tried a deceiver who depended on BoD and word of renewal and it was a bit of a chore keeping thosee buffs up. He ended up getting one shot from something off screen (in hardcore) and all I can guess is that one of those buffs wasn't up, so I've kinda shied away from depending on those kind of skills. Glad to see you still at it man!
They’ve ‘fixed’ Blood of Dreeg (patch 1.2 I think, possibly earlier) by making the up-time much longer even without the amulet that adds 2 minutes. Wind Devils are also permanent now, although that isn’t an Occultist thing.
@@Arcadelife1 Ah the wind devils update has gone through? I might actually make a shaman now, cause that constant re-summoning was a major deal breaker. Sucks getting arthritis in my gaming hands :D
@@elskirvo I thought it was part of the most recent patch from a few days back. Hopefully I’m not wrong, haven’t tried it yet but I was using permanent wind devils in season 6 and I’m sure they included the latest patch beta in that mod.
@@Arcadelife1 They are permanent now, confirmed. All the healing skills that apply a buff are also extended to 1 minute base as well, which is nice for silly people like me who would forget their head if it wasn't screwed on.
@@elskirvo I'm using the skill right now, too. It works... permenantly. Haha. However, the white noise sound that they constantly make is a little annoying -- but V on Reddit said that they are going to try and hot fix it with new audio soon to test the waters. He was like, 'this sound has been in the game for 12 years, and now its an issue?' haha.
For me many classes are quite good for starting. Every class has it's own benefits and drawbacks. I have watched the video through at least twice and am trying it now. I stopped last night around level 10 and am about to give it a few minutes more before I head out to do some adulting. Enjoying the splash damage by the way. I'd like to see how you do the Necromancer at start.
Thanks for trying this one. What I'm trying to demonstrate (more videos to come) is how the Occultist is a strong class (mastery) at the start and can become all sorts of different types of character - Kiting poison damage, big-hit chaos damage (guns), pets, retaliation, and is always a good choice for a strong support class for other masteries, etc.
@@Arcadelife1 I just got to level 13 or 14. Are you going to do a follow-up with this character going up more levels or are you leaving it to us?
@@charlesballard5251 I’ve got another video for this character, almost finished editing it. I’m also thinking of doing videos for a few other masteries in a similar style or maybe a comparison video showing three different masteries doing the main parts of Act 1 and equipping their versions of the ‘easy’ gear from Act 1. Then the new expansion will come out and I’ll be obsessed with the new mastery 😜
@@Arcadelife1 Yeah!!! Looking forward to "Fangs of ..." whatever. Can't wait for your first vids on that.
Purifier is said to be the easiest
Well ... I do love Purifiers but a Purifier isn't a single class and in my opinion the Occultist is the best class for easy starting, variety of potential builds and quality as a support class.
Still love inquis myself because of how powerful it is early on with 0 gear, and after the rune buffs, it has gotten even crazier.
Yeah, if it's about speed and levelling then Inquis is v good but I spent a while thinking about which class has the speed, the variety, and also the abilities for a support class. Ultimately it's quite subjective but I keep finding new and different ways to have fun with Occultist so it had to be this one.
To be fair all classes are the "Best" starter, except for oathkeeper.
The 'Part 1' in the title and the '?' on the thumbnail might be a clue...😜
@@Arcadelife1 i'm a bit dense 😆
Yeah, occultist was my very first character when the game first came out. Now i'm getting tired of the hellhound and raven. I want my character to be able to do everything without the need for pets. If you overrely on a pet you can die quickly if it dies.
Try Dreeg's Evil Eye with or without Bloody Pox support. Ditch the pets, see how it feels.
