I think a box truck is optimal for urban stealth camping. Considering sprinters are so expensive. This is gold

    • @JoeZyzyx
      @JoeZyzyx 5 років тому +15

A stepvan I think is better since it looks like a service truck and put a fake business sign on each side, like "Joe's Floor Cleaning, Wax, Polish Inc." or "Bob's AC/Heat Service & Repair" and have an email address on it that reflects the same. Also some black numbers on each side fender makes it look even more like a numbered service truck. You then park over night in 24/7 shopping areas and everyone assumes you are there doing some service at night. At a shopping plaza with several stores, nobody knows which place you are working in, LOL.

@Soup Can more good points to keep in mind. I drove a diesel 27' UHaul from Florida to Maryland in 2002 and nothing other than standard driving license needed. My $50-100-50 insurance covered it, but in case, I decided to also add the insurance since it was full loaded with household stuff. I wouldn't suggest something that huge though for a "stealth camper" at all. I doubt one needs a CDL or similar license for a privately owned stepvan, or maybe length and of course GVW would still apply.

Yes, box trucks are optimal sort of. But in my case I do not want to have to get out of the vehicle to enter the living area. Either a hole has to be cut out between the the driving area and living area or purchasing a step van is what I think it really really optimal.

Suggestion for bed - forget putting the sheets down, use 2 sleeping bags to lay on top - you can also zip them together, then sew together two flat sheets, to slip inside of the sleeping bag to sleep on. You can wash the sleeping bags less often, and you can wash the sheet insert more often (easier to wash). Just a suggestion! Nice box Truck Campervan. Have fun! G-d bless!

Nice build, the suspension airbags and moog coils are pricey. I plan on putting coil supports in my '05 E250 to lift it up an inch or so higher. I also have the same wheel size except I went up to 17s. I picked up the coil supports at pep boys for about $20.

the sides of that bed are big enough for anyone to sleep on so unless you're have plans or are having guests you could just each sleep on a side and not have to make up the bed just put a small quilt down as a sheet on each side if you need it and one to cover up with. I'm a huge person and I could easily sleep on that. its a great little van you've done a lot of work its awesome!

What a great build. So many talented people creating great box truck campers. What I like best is the uniqueness tailored to your specific needs. In the beginning I looked at lot RV's but I've decided to build my own to my needs. You really did a great job. I specifically like what you did to rear area with the swing out tire and generator area. I may have to copy that. Well done!

I like your camper build, but I love the way you think. We are watching you approach the maze of electronics and mechanics and building a new moving house with stuff you found alongside the road and in the scrap yard [that's a little joke, but sometimes it sounds like that]. I am impressed with your logical approach to all of the technical decisions one has to make to create a comfortable, safe, camper for the pleasure of your family and friends. And anyone who worries about their dog's comfort enough to create a temp gauge that can signal you when you are away makes you a good person. My mother always said that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat their children and animals. Enjoy your creation. You deserve it.

Also, from my old Boy Scout Camp days, an old laundry detergent bottle with the top cut off makes for an excellent bath tote to the showers. You can set it down in the shower, has a handle to hang up and you can hand wash an item or two while at the shower with a little bottle of detergent amongst your other/razor/shampoo/toothbrush/etc.....and FREE everytime you visit a laundry. Makes for a great handheld disposable urinal too and offload the in house system.

Multi directional shades are nice , can use them from the top down or bottom up. Top down is great from seeing outside without revealing much inside. Build is solid and well done. I could live full time in that and actually have in a lesser conversion on and off fore 2 years.

I have thought about buying a used box ambulance and converting it. It already has the heavy duty suspension, cabinets for storage ac/ht mounted on top. They have the walk through and the not walk through to the cab. compartments out side to mount propane tanks or batteries. Most come with the built in inverters. Fix the back double door like you did and just use the side door. I have ridden and drove quite a few of them and the ride has to make the patient comfortable. Great video and very informative.

Mike Idol careful with those type of service vehicles, check for a hr counter because those vehicles like cop cars were idled for hundreds or even thousands of hrs and idle time converts to real wear and tear so 40k or 50k miles is equivalent to far more. Also it's hard to get all the bodily fluids out of all the crevices and I wouldn't want to own one myself as a conversion having read some threads about them. Maybe consider an older diesel 3/4 ton pickup truck and a cheap cabover they are out there and pretty affordable, that's the route I went and I'm pretty happy with it. Good luck

    • @pearlllllgarcia
      @pearlllllgarcia 7 років тому +1

Very true. I think 1 hr idle = 30 miles driving. So if it has been idling hours a day, 7 days a week, lots of wear and tear.

Mike Idol ambulance box bodies are generally heavy, as they are "crash survivable". I have one here that was built by LifeLine, it was on a one ton dual wheel chassis and weighs 2000#. They are VERY expensive new, I think mine was $40-50,000. They aluminum is 40-20 alum I beam, foam insulated. ...someday I may build my own 550 🐢 turtle.....

Beutal tape us your best friend when it comes to sealing around any hole you cut in ceiling or walls. Use it around windows, vents, under corner trim etc. I'm gonna use your swivel table idea in the camper I'm working on now. Again, good video. Be safe on your next trip 😁👍

If you have roof-mounted solar, you can't park in the shade. If you park in the sun, you need more solar. Consider a trailer with a solar array. It can be detached and left in the best sunny position that can be reached by a power cord to the truck.

Its a really impressive accomplishment jydog! One of the reasons I chose the Ford E350 is watching your videos and talking about the versatility of Fords interchangeable parts. It just makes sense incase you ever break down, you have many options for interchangeable parts to choose from. Im actually thinking of converting to 4x4 in the future just to be able to drive on snow chain controlled roads out here in California and Nevada, not so much for off road driving. Let me know if you need a hand whenever you decide to convert you Van to 4x4. But looking good so far!

They make those black shower bags that attract the sun and hold a bunch of water. Put it on the roof, although you may need more roof support. Excellent video and you do nice work, looks really nice, thanks for sharing

In reference to the rear suspension on your Box Campervan, may I suggest that you complete the load and ride capability with suspension augmentation by Timbren. I added these to my F250 to compensate for severe drop when hooking up my RV trailer to my truck. I have a set of Timbrens that are rated to add 6000 pounds of support. The cost for my kit was under $250 dollars and took about 40 minutes to remove the old jounce bumpers and install the Timbrens. No drilling, and very easy to install. This may be something to consider for a more robust suspension. These Timbrens will make the suspension very rigid unless you are under load but do not come into play until you are under load. The benefit is that unlike airbags, Timbrens never get leaks or pop. Airbags do go bad and they are very expensive to replace. I hope this gives you something to think about. Keep up the excellent project. Looking forward to the final product.

Attempting to figure out how tall you are (which is impossible unless you tell me) the ceiling looks very close to the top of your head. Over the years I've lost 2 inches in height and am now 6"0". I really don't want to be scrunched over even if it's just a little. A very much enjoyed this video. Still have about ten minutes to go though. So many things you did are are going to do make perfect sense to me. I will be outfitting a step van or box truck within the next 9 months or so. Well, that's when I'll start my project. Will not forget your handy, functional, and for the most part inexpensive tricks during your build. Thank you very much and happy trails to you and yours, J. Noe

I was thinking about the issue with putting the fitted sheet on. Have you tried, before you install the table top pieces wrap the fitted sheet on the back half of the bed. Then you can do the front after the bed is complete. This way you can still reach it without crawling over it. Let me know if this works. Happy travels!

GREAT DIY work and figuring out how to make the platform meet your family's needs. You've got a lot of mechanical and practical skills that are enviable. Yes it's a work in progress, but it's ready for a road trip. Keep focusing on your priorities of needs and you can take a great van to the next level!

Out of a lot of box truck conversions this is one of my favorite you have a wet room. I normally just go to next video if there is no wet room. Why travel if you cant bathe or use the restroom in your own mobel house. Right? So you thought this well and gratz on that. Wish I could hire you to make mine. I would rather live in one. Then stay in one spot for the rest of my remaining life.

Never again can I even begin to compare what i do & what you do!!! Those steps are also amazing & I can only imagine I will see many amazing things you know about and apply to your situation! I look forward to seeing what you can do!! LOL Judie

How much gas is a tankful on your generator? Looks very comfortable the way you set it up inside, and the double-swing-away rear bumper is great! A couple things you might consider to make the bedding chore simpler: 1)Use velcro to attach a mattress pad and bottom sheet combination, connecting them at each of the corners and at two or three places across the top, bottom and both sides. (Having the sheet stitched to the heavier material of a mattress pad would make it more manageable, as you throw it into approximate position, then secure it using the pre-positioned velcro strips, which I think should be 4 to 5 inches at each side point, and wrap around each of the corners in an "L-shape," at an 8 to 10 inch length. The extra padding would also serve the purpose of making your camper bed feel more like a regular one-piece sleeping solution. 2)You could make a bottom-sheet slipcover, for each of the individual cushion components making up your bed.
I can identify with the problem because when I was 12 years old, my Dad bought a truck camper which we fixed up and he had the dinette reupholstered in a beautiful blue shiny metal-flake Naugahyde. It looked great by day. However, I was the one who got to try and sleep on that slippery surface by night, with just a sheet between me and a material that didn't breathe-at all! I discover that the key having a good vacation is sleeping well during that vacation. Hope it all works out terrific for you and yours.

You definitely need two Fantastic Fans in order to keep your quarters cool and dry. Everyone seems to only use one, but it's just no enough. Putting one in the shower area is a must!
Actually those fans are not the greatest. I did see someone use a much better made one for the same price but I can't recall the name of it.
    Nice Rig !!

By far the most sustainable interior I’ve seen. Also it must reduce the weight a good amount. So many people install the thick wooden cabinetry and go back to making it look like an old camper from the 70s. The curved edges and plastic doors and cabinetry is the best. Never rot and can easily be wiped down. The shower and shitter are the most important thing. If you can’t warsh yer arse and drop a deuce in the middle of a snow storm that’s a huge issue for me. Survivability is a must. I noticed no real kitchen area. Now I’m not a fan of food smell and grease that could accumulate inside vehicle but if winter camping I assume your not out in storm grilling. Microwave foods? Just curious of how you approach the meals. All in all best rig so far . Thx for the inspiration

just an idea for your shower room. instead of cutting into the roof, fit an extractor to the side, so you can switch it on and off. no need to cut into the roof, no chance of top leaks that way. just an idea. great looking camper by the way

I know this was posted some time ago but I just saw it and had a thought. You don’t need a gravity feed to fill your fresh water off grid. Just use a cheap bicycle air pump to pressurize whatever container your using to fill it. Might save a lil money on parts and labor.

I also recommend no black water of any kind. Use a bucket with an elderly potty chair (you know the kind with the rails around it - they also fold up - we bought one at an estate sale for $4), plastic bag in the bucket and the cocomoss, or kitty litter with urine seperator into a bottle - works great for us. Just toss out. Does not smell at all.

Nice efficiency for lighting and fan. Not sure how long that will last based on your battery bank, but when you add the solar panels, it should come together nicely. I can't imagine using any A/C or even the microwave without shore power or your generator,, but looks like you have it covered. Looks frugal but functional. I like it.

Have you considered adding the shower vent out of the side toward the top.
Using a small 12v.4in. fan and a drier vent exhaust cover. This way still no holes in roof, and more room for solar panels.

if you add a couple anchor points inside the back you could hang a hammock in there have a comfy removable hang out spot as well as a possible place to have a guest sleep, Hooking your laptop up the big screen could allow you play movies and such that are on your computer rather than using data to watch movies. the other thing I feel like would be good is a indoor kitchen area, not sure if you had the space it's hard to tell on video. really like the build it's right up my alley.

I would suggest you connect your house batteries to the alternator so that you can charge them up when your engine is running. You're going to need a battery isolator between the starting battery and house batteries so that you don't drain your starting battery with your A/C unit lol. Good luck.
Good work, everything looks great! Congrats!

Great job on that, I've got a work horse van , like a UPS truck I'd like to do like that. I'll tell you a good way you could do hot water, is use 2 like 8 inch black pipe running long ways on top to fill with water, and let the sun heat it. I saw a school bus camper fixed like that one time, Gravity hot water. would work great on the roof of that. very nice video. Thanks for the idea's.
