My dad maintains cell towers all across Tennessee, and we live in Tennessee, of course. He took me on a small trip to show me what work was like, and we drove by those exact towers. He said they are probably TV towers, and yes, they are directional. He said that they are quite high power as well.
Oh yeah, TV broadcast is very powerful and very dangerous. I do cell and broadcast tower maintenance as well and we won't even get close to those antennas unless they're completely off due to the high levels of ionizing radiation they throw off.
That was a scary situation you've got more guts than I would have had I would have headed back soon as I lost GPS ...Love the hilarious Wal-Mart shopping you did, I definitely needed a good laugh because ive had a horrible stressful weekend so thanks for the laughs Ken✌
Ken, I not only find your information very informative and fun, but I also find you to be one CRAZY guy. Just like me. A little humor with anything goes a long way and helps keep some of us from going insane. Besides, you can't be all serious all the time. Thanks and please keep up the good posts.
Had the sane thing happen to me. Went out for my very first Tower Inspection, had great GPS and as soon as I was close enough to start recording video, my GPS just dropped from 100% to NOTHING. Because I was at near vertical position standing very close to the tower, the bird was back behind in no time; totally freaked me out. Regained control and every time I got close, GPS would drop. Finally I decided to fly a little higher rather than level and all went well. Did another tower right after the first one. Was totally prepared for the same behavior, but fortunately I did not experience the same, so was able to relax and capture exactly what I wanted.
Ken is likely the most fun comedian I have seen in my life. And he dont even need to use sex or anything vulgar, OR make fun of people to be fun! This guy is a world class.
@@n2rj What is the front end? Is it possible or likely that a strong radio signal, or these days a 5G signal could cause permanent damage to the drone?
@@n2rj Thank you! I'll stay away from the broadcasting towers unless I can confirm that they are no more that 1000 watts (if they even exist at that power level). I flew up to the FM transmitter on a local cell tower. Now I wonder if that was a risky thing to do...
@@xRG1x What Rhea said is correct. Under part 107, 400 ft is the limit AGL however you can also go 400 ft above an object like this tower. The limitation is that you have to stay within 400 ft lateral distance of the tower and you cannot enter controlled air space. so if there happened to be controlled airspace at 1000 ft and the tower happened to be 800 ft tall you would not be permitted to fly 400 ft above the tower because that would put you into the controlled airspace. In that case your altitude limit would be 1,000 ft or 200 ft above the tower.
Ken thank you for all the great content you put together. Educational with plenty of humour. I have learned plenty. And had plenty of laughs while watching. Thank you. And God bless.
That was excellent! Having lived on the job on top of one of those towers daily for years, I am surprised that all of the hard core wideband RF didn't wipe out the front end of every receiver in that bird! If you ever have trouble in the future, fly to the middle of the tower inside the legs. It probably has less RF there than 10 miles down the road! ;D
OK... That Intro earned you a new moniker: ...Kinky Ken... I'm really glad you edited out the dressing room scenes...! ;) Not to forget the nice flight footage... Thanks for posting, bad puns and all...!
If I remember correctly the plain looking tower is owned by Channel 5 and the tower that has 2 "branches" at the top is owned by Ion, and the one with 3 is Fox 17. Fun fact the Ion "studio" is here in Mt. Juliet, tucked away in a shopping center. Other than the transmitter link on the back of the building, it is very hard to find and most people don't notice it unless they are looking for it.
Yes I am! I now own 2 drones as well, this is your fault actually, you just look like you have too much fun sometimes, I bought a spark and my family decided to gift me a mavic air after they started receiving all the pics from the places I go (truck driver) . I would like to thank you though seriously, I’ve learned a ton from your videos, I knew nothing about the drones past a few small toys made for inside. I also bought 2 packs of the plastic bottle lids from the guy in West Virginia, an awesome video inspired me to order them, my grandkids are still blowing up plastic bottles. I was just in Nashville last week, the surrounding areas are very nice. Tennessee is my favorite state to go to in fact, beautiful about anywhere you travel there. I’m smack in the middle of the mountains in Virginia, also a beautiful place to travel and live in as well. Ok, I’m babbling on and on, I just wanted to say AWESOME CHANNEL !!!and AWESOME CONTENT!!! You do an awesome job my friend , I’ll be smashing the like button and watching, thanks for what you do!!
Hey Ken, Maybe you can use this joke in your next video I just made up. Two goldfish are swimming in a bowl, one says to the other one... Hey! where'd all the fish food go? The other says, you were sleeping and I ate it all, so the other fish says... (ready for this?) You're so Shellfish! ...Huh? Huh? Aaaaa LOL
Man, i am way across the globe, but your jokes, it is so good, i keep coming back for more haha, now i don’t know if i am back for the drone videos or just for the jokes anymore haha
I'm impressed the receiver is good enough to be able to work in that high RF environment. I'm not at all surprised that the other receivers (GPS) were overwhelmed. A optical zoom on the cameras would be handy in these situations.
I’ve had my Phantom 4 flip out like this once before. It was do to interference from a wedding DJs wireless sound equipment, which used radio signals. At least, that’s what I believe it was.
Ken I just flew my magic at a tower that was over 2000 ft tall . The closer I got to the top the more glitchy the screen became and the gimble started doing the same thing as yours. Then eventually I lost all Transmission signal from the drone. Luckly I pressed the return home button on my remote and it came back into signal
I live near the three WBT Tall Towers in Dallas NC and at least one of them is over 2000ft. I’ve wanted to do some drone footage of them for a long time but I’ve heard tons of horror stories about drones just dropping from the sky once they get close. There is also a super high powered AT&T & Military microwave link between Gastonia NC and Dallas NC in the same flight path that might be the cause. Maybe someday I’ll get up the guts to try it if I can get permission from the surrounding land owners?
Surprising the video signal didn't cut out. Held up pretty well being that close to such a high-power signal. Drone is pretty resilient. I have always wondered what would happen if you flew a drone really close to a cell tower or high-power broadcast tower, now I know.
Doesn't really happen the same with cell towers - I do cell tower inspections with a drone and get very close to the antennas. I've only gotten an interference message once in hundreds of inspections flown.
I'm gonna be the boring geek here: It looks like the towers (either their power cables running up the tower or the antennas somehow) created a magnetic interference. The drone will show 0 satellites when the compass doesn't work properly, even though it may have satellites. It might also be that the GPS signal was actually disturbed by the tower. That is unlikely, though, because if that were the case, it probably wouldn't have come back with 15+ satellites for just a few seconds. The compass interference also explains the gimbal issue since the gimbal controller uses compass input to control the gimbal somehow. Don't ask me how exactly that works, but if the compass input is bad, you will get your drone yawing to one side by itself, the gimbal losing a level horizon, and the gimbal sort of "swimming" while you fly. It feels very weird, but get free from the interference and you're free from the issue.
I have been on the NW tower. It has an elevator. The multiple tx antennas there are nuts, and your quad just got swamped. I am surprised that you didn't loose comms with it, very surprised.

For some reason when I fly my Phantom 4 in ATTI mode, it will occasionally suddenly pitch the camera about 45 degrees to the right. I about have a heart attack every time it happens fearing something caused a lost of control and I am going down. It usually pops back after a couple of seconds. Only in ATTI mode though. Strange.

A couple of scary moments around that tower but your piloting skills saved the day and you got some beautiful video. You were up pretty high. By the way, did you get that big Walmart drone?
I was just in Crossville, TN over the weekend visiting family. I was flying my P3 Advanced over the water filming the nice houses on the lake when I accidentally smacked into a tree. I had my first and hopefully only drone crash right in your state. Lol. Drone is ok. I got lucky since it landed about 2 feet from the water.
Buddy you are freaking crazy... and i love it! And also like your nice finishing touches...hi hi! Some times it is a bit tough to get it ( cause i am a frenchy) but enjoy it......
Nice flight! Did you notice how your drone started going crazy once it got near the actual antenna of that tower? That's RF interference causing that, be very careful flying RC drones near them!
Ken, I'm studying for my part 107 and I've been watching your videos. I studied that you have to be 2000 ft away from guide wires. Is that a new rule, and can you get a waiver for that? I love your videos and learned so much from them. Thanks
American Tower only owns the tower, not the transmitters. They rent the tower to the owner of the transmitter. My old station rented from American Tower, and I used to go to our tower all the time. Believe it or not, one of the major reasons I left that job was so I could get my sUAS license.
Enjoyable video as always... How have you found is the best way to balance the FAA’s guidelines for staying 2,000 feet from guy-wired towers with the requirement of staying within 400 feet of tall structures in order to exceed 400 feet AGL? I notice in the video you said you can increase altitude gradually, and was hoping you could elaborate on that. Thanks
So is there a good way to learn to fly these online ? Programs etc? I’ve had cheap ones before, wanting to get a good Drone, just over the Mountain from you in NC. I’m in need of guidance! 😁
I would advise that you begin flying with a non GPS toy drone before you start using the big expensive ones. The cheaper drones are more difficult to fly because they don't have GPS stabilization. Once you get the hang of that, then you can pretty much fly any drone with GPS aboard. Good luck with your endeavors and keep practicing and practicing and practicing and you will become better and better!
Wow thank you for that. I left Clarksville TN on the way to Gallatin TN on I24 and saw those two towers thinking wow I wish I had my phantom 4 with me. You saved me from a coronary attack had that warning happen to me... good advice. I flew into steam (see Butch McGee Air on you tube) and it was so think the phantom thought there was an obstacle front and back and refused to move. So I sent it straight up and out and all is well... Love the shirt...you get it at loafs and fishes...??? lol

Buddy you are freaking crazy... and i love it! And also like your nice finishing touches...hi hi!
Some times it is a bit tough to get it ( cause i am a frenchy) but enjoy it......
You missed an even better pun at 4:27 - You were "***CHARGED*** with a-salt and battery!" :P
Very nice thank, sometimes i can learn alot from the ones that got away :)
+Michael A Jackson Films Glad you liked it Michael!
You should adopt. Then you would have someone laugh at your jokes. 🤣
Enjoyed the Walmart humor. You must be fearless in the air, I would have mashed the return to home button at the first warning message
Thanks Gene!
It was a bit disconcerting, but I trust the tech.
Nice flight! Did you notice how your drone started going crazy once it got near the actual antenna of that tower? That's RF interference causing that, be very careful flying RC drones near them!
That's why you buy this for flying into Rf. www.dji.com/mobile/d-rtk/info
Ken, I'm studying for my part 107 and I've been watching your videos. I studied that you have to be 2000 ft away from guide wires. Is that a new rule, and can you get a waiver for that?
I love your videos and learned so much from them. Thanks
That's not a rule.
Only a suggestion for manned pilots.
American Tower only owns the tower, not the transmitters. They rent the tower to the owner of the transmitter. My old station rented from American Tower, and I used to go to our tower all the time.
Believe it or not, one of the major reasons I left that job was so I could get my sUAS license.
Nice Kenny!
+CleverDarkElve The Linda!!!
The flying , spot on Ken,,, your videos are great, keep em coming 😀
the baby bananas are the best lol
Thank you for buying my product Ken ( Brownberry Country White Bread) 😜
I would have just watched you shop 🤣 I swear my wife hates how I joke like this at the store
🤣👍
Enjoyable video as always... How have you found is the best way to balance the FAA’s guidelines for staying 2,000 feet from guy-wired towers with the requirement of staying within 400 feet of tall structures in order to exceed 400 feet AGL? I notice in the video you said you can increase altitude gradually, and was hoping you could elaborate on that. Thanks
7:41 that scared me!
The cheaper drones are more
difficult to fly because they don't have GPS stabilization. Once you get
the hang of that, then you can pretty much fly any drone with GPS
aboard.
Love the shirt...you get it at loafs and fishes...??? lol
+Butch McGee Air Yes, most towers are fine to fly. This one is a very powerful television transmitter, so STAY CLEAR.
Steam on the other hand... FUN!
