@@n2rj What is the front end? Is it possible or likely that a strong radio signal, or these days a 5G signal could cause permanent damage to the drone?
@@n2rj Thank you! I'll stay away from the broadcasting towers unless I can confirm that they are no more that 1000 watts (if they even exist at that power level). I flew up to the FM transmitter on a local cell tower. Now I wonder if that was a risky thing to do...
@@xRG1x What Rhea said is correct. Under part 107, 400 ft is the limit AGL however you can also go 400 ft above an object like this tower. The limitation is that you have to stay within 400 ft lateral distance of the tower and you cannot enter controlled air space. so if there happened to be controlled airspace at 1000 ft and the tower happened to be 800 ft tall you would not be permitted to fly 400 ft above the tower because that would put you into the controlled airspace. In that case your altitude limit would be 1,000 ft or 200 ft above the tower.
My dad maintains cell towers all across Tennessee, and we live in Tennessee, of course. He took me on a small trip to show me what work was like, and we drove by those exact towers. He said they are probably TV towers, and yes, they are directional. He said that they are quite high power as well.
Oh yeah, TV broadcast is very powerful and very dangerous. I do cell and broadcast tower maintenance as well and we won't even get close to those antennas unless they're completely off due to the high levels of ionizing radiation they throw off.

Had the sane thing happen to me. Went out for my very first Tower Inspection, had great GPS and as soon as I was close enough to start recording video, my GPS just dropped from 100% to NOTHING. Because I was at near vertical position standing very close to the tower, the bird was back behind in no time; totally freaked me out. Regained control and every time I got close, GPS would drop. Finally I decided to fly a little higher rather than level and all went well. Did another tower right after the first one. Was totally prepared for the same behavior, but fortunately I did not experience the same, so was able to relax and capture exactly what I wanted.

Since I was watching and listening to all your puns, I need to ask you one question about monitors since i bought the dji phantom pro 4 and am expecting it any minute, which monitor works the best? Or phone? Thanks, Tom
+Tom Bird Well the crystal sky display from DJI is probably the best because it's the brightest. However it is the most expensive. I have found that the iPad air works just fine. It's the largest tablet that will fit on the controller of a Phantom 4.
Hey Ken what propeller do you use when flying your phantom 4 which ever models you have? The low noise or regular ? And do they handle high winds ok is it steady in the high altitudes ?
Ken, I recently got into droning. I have a Phamtom 4 and Live in Oakland Tn. Do you have any classes or suggestions on where I can join a club or learn how to get a license to fly commercially. I would love to do this more than a hobby. Thanks again for all your great videos. Very funny and informative.
Quick couple of questions... If you lose control how do you fly home? If no GPS how does it RTH if you lose control? And lastly, since you were over 400 from the ground flying between the towers and the towers are over 800 ft apart how do you believe you were still legal?
Yes I am! I now own 2 drones as well, this is your fault actually, you just look like you have too much fun sometimes, I bought a spark and my family decided to gift me a mavic air after they started receiving all the pics from the places I go (truck driver) . I would like to thank you though seriously, I’ve learned a ton from your videos, I knew nothing about the drones past a few small toys made for inside. I also bought 2 packs of the plastic bottle lids from the guy in West Virginia, an awesome video inspired me to order them, my grandkids are still blowing up plastic bottles. I was just in Nashville last week, the surrounding areas are very nice. Tennessee is my favorite state to go to in fact, beautiful about anywhere you travel there. I’m smack in the middle of the mountains in Virginia, also a beautiful place to travel and live in as well. Ok, I’m babbling on and on, I just wanted to say AWESOME CHANNEL !!!and AWESOME CONTENT!!! You do an awesome job my friend , I’ll be smashing the like button and watching, thanks for what you do!!
I have been on the NW tower. It has an elevator. The multiple tx antennas there are nuts, and your quad just got swamped. I am surprised that you didn't loose comms with it, very surprised.
I'm impressed the receiver is good enough to be able to work in that high RF environment. I'm not at all surprised that the other receivers (GPS) were overwhelmed. A optical zoom on the cameras would be handy in these situations.
I’ve had my Phantom 4 flip out like this once before. It was do to interference from a wedding DJs wireless sound equipment, which used radio signals. At least, that’s what I believe it was.
For some reason when I fly my Phantom 4 in ATTI mode, it will occasionally suddenly pitch the camera about 45 degrees to the right. I about have a heart attack every time it happens fearing something caused a lost of control and I am going down. It usually pops back after a couple of seconds. Only in ATTI mode though. Strange.
Question, you were 5,000 feet in the air but within 400 feet of the tower. When you pulled away, did you come back down to 400 feet? how did you know you were within the 400 feet of the towers?

Middle European (Czech) here: Ken, I am lovin your videos, for real. You really have that sense for cutting and editing all the needed material. Also you are so "goofy" so that is awesomly funny. I like to do that a lot also. BUT! One thing I really wanted to say is: I think that that situations when your gimbal started to rotated wierdly,... for real.. it looks cool ! :-O Maybe..just maybe.. i would rotated them even a little bit more. It has kinda fresh look for a drone videos and i have the feeling that it might be a thing in da future. It is similar to those videos from first generation of action cameras, when everything was shaky and non-stabillized. It was new and everybody was quite headless about it… Okay.. I am not everyone. But i am really loving it :D BTW your puns were awesome, keep in da funny and good work! Luv your stuff… Best regards Ondrej Exner
Ken I just flew my magic at a tower that was over 2000 ft tall . The closer I got to the top the more glitchy the screen became and the gimble started doing the same thing as yours. Then eventually I lost all Transmission signal from the drone. Luckly I pressed the return home button on my remote and it came back into signal
Enjoyable video as always... How have you found is the best way to balance the FAA’s guidelines for staying 2,000 feet from guy-wired towers with the requirement of staying within 400 feet of tall structures in order to exceed 400 feet AGL? I notice in the video you said you can increase altitude gradually, and was hoping you could elaborate on that. Thanks
Nice video Ken! My cousin works a lot near Nashville and has talked about those two towers and how he wants to fly his Phantom 3 around them. I flew my Evo about 300ft from a cell phone tower and noticed video lag. I could see the drone line of site and it was flying fine although the video had about a five second delay.
Greetings Ken, Now, just feeling like you left us all "hanging" by the towers. That was a horrible ending!! :) Did the drone survive, did it make back to earth?, is this the beginning of a sequel, where's part two??
Man, i am way across the globe, but your jokes, it is so good, i keep coming back for more haha, now i don’t know if i am back for the drone videos or just for the jokes anymore haha
Ken, I'm studying for my part 107 and I've been watching your videos. I studied that you have to be 2000 ft away from guide wires. Is that a new rule, and can you get a waiver for that? I love your videos and learned so much from them. Thanks
Hey ken, At 5:40 did you notice that your distance from home doubled in an instant? I remember watching this video sometime ago but was just going through some of your old stuff in liking it again from my new channel. I had very similar symptoms with my p4p which in the end I concluded was a faulty GPS module. However even after changing that module there is one place in particular where I normally have these symptoms and now I'm guessing maybe there's a 5G transmitter or something like that in the area. At the time I suspected maybe somebody had countermeasures or something. It was strange, just like your display in this video complete with the tilted, drunk gimble.
Surprising the video signal didn't cut out. Held up pretty well being that close to such a high-power signal. Drone is pretty resilient. I have always wondered what would happen if you flew a drone really close to a cell tower or high-power broadcast tower, now I know.
Doesn't really happen the same with cell towers - I do cell tower inspections with a drone and get very close to the antennas. I've only gotten an interference message once in hundreds of inspections flown.
I was just in Crossville, TN over the weekend visiting family. I was flying my P3 Advanced over the water filming the nice houses on the lake when I accidentally smacked into a tree. I had my first and hopefully only drone crash right in your state. Lol. Drone is ok. I got lucky since it landed about 2 feet from the water.
Hilarious as always Mr Ken. How did your Bona cleaner go? I had that same big bona but it's gone now after spraying it all over my floor. Got a great shine now though!
Hey Ken, Maybe you can use this joke in your next video I just made up. Two goldfish are swimming in a bowl, one says to the other one... Hey! where'd all the fish food go? The other says, you were sleeping and I ate it all, so the other fish says... (ready for this?) You're so Shellfish! ...Huh? Huh? Aaaaa LOL
A couple of scary moments around that tower but your piloting skills saved the day and you got some beautiful video. You were up pretty high. By the way, did you get that big Walmart drone?
I think Ken Heron is the only guy that can include himself shopping in half of the video and STILL make it entertaining.
SORRY for late reply but you stole the words from my mouth LOL.
I cant believe I enjoyed watching someone shop. Ken you are so brilliant that you came up with a pun or a joke for every item.
Well, thanks! There was a LOT more, but I edited for time.

Maybe..just maybe.. i would rotated them even a little bit more. It has kinda fresh look for a drone videos and i have the feeling that it might be a thing in da future. It is similar to those videos from first generation of action cameras, when everything was shaky and non-stabillized. It was new and everybody was quite headless about it… Okay.. I am not everyone. But i am really loving it :D
BTW your puns were awesome, keep in da funny and good work! Luv your stuff…
Best regards
Ondrej Exner
Hello my Czech friend!
Thank you for taking time to comment. I'm glad that you are enjoying the channel. Have an awesome day!
I'm curious about your telemetry overlay. Is it Dashware? GoPro something or other?
+Thunderbyrd It's the flight record from the Go app.
As usual, funny video while teaching me something. Thank you
Ken , you are joy man, thanks for the vids,
This is great! Beautiful shots, but i enjoyed the error messages.
I’ve never laughed threw a drone video...tell just now! New sub 🙌
Thank you my friend. That is very much appreciated!
Thanks
Holy Crap we DO need more shopping videos. I was pissing myself, laughing so hard. Haha. Also great drone shots!! -RCT&D
Can we just note the fact that he named his phantom kentastic 2
😎🤘
Thanks, enjoyed you immensely!
Thanks Craig!
Thank you for buying my product Ken ( Brownberry Country White Bread) 😜
Nice video Ken! My cousin works a lot near Nashville and has talked about those two towers and how he wants to fly his Phantom 3 around them.
I flew my Evo about 300ft from a cell phone tower and noticed video lag. I could see the drone line of site and it was flying fine although the video had about a five second delay.
Really awesome Vid, Ken. Its amazing to see what you get out of the P4.
Greetings Ken,
Now, just feeling like you left us all "hanging" by the towers. That was a horrible ending!! :) Did the drone survive, did it make back to earth?, is this the beginning of a sequel, where's part two??
Ken I work around a lot of ships. I wonder how the radar would effect my new Mavic air 2. I guess I’ll have to....wait for it.......”test the waters”?
Man, i am way across the globe, but your jokes, it is so good, i keep coming back for more haha, now i don’t know if i am back for the drone videos or just for the jokes anymore haha
+Filipino Thanks bud!
I try too make the videos fun for everyone.
Nice Video Ken.. We don't have any Walmarts in Australia. Does look a lot like COSTCO.. We have those..
Flying around the tower without GPS....wow! Talk about a pucker factor! :) Glad everything worked out well for you, you awesome pilot! :)
+ShoHashi Indeed. It was a bit harrowing. Luckily, I had a spare set of undies with me!
Ken, I'm studying for my part 107 and I've been watching your videos. I studied that you have to be 2000 ft away from guide wires. Is that a new rule, and can you get a waiver for that?
I love your videos and learned so much from them. Thanks
That's not a rule.
Only a suggestion for manned pilots.
Hey ken,
At 5:40 did you notice that your distance from home doubled in an instant?
I remember watching this video sometime ago but was just going through some of your old stuff in liking it again from my new channel. I had very similar symptoms with my p4p which in the end I concluded was a faulty GPS module. However even after changing that module there is one place in particular where I normally have these symptoms and now I'm guessing maybe there's a 5G transmitter or something like that in the area. At the time I suspected maybe somebody had countermeasures or something. It was strange, just like your display in this video complete with the tilted, drunk gimble.
what kind of camera do you use for your videos
Phantom 4Pro
Hero Session 5
Sony RX100 VI
My favorite was the Gerber Blueberry Buckle. Man could I devour that!! Especially with some Zwieback toast!
That gelato coffee crunch icecream is where its at
Been watching your videos a few days now. You're punny
Thank you.
May your interest in my channel never WAYNE.
(See what I did there?)
HAA!!
Ha, You're really good.. Wish I was as good on my channels
I'm feel'n the onset of extreme pun saturation. Your just too wicked Ken.
HAAA!! I usually get a big bottle in the mornings.
Hey Ken, Maybe you can use this joke in your next video I just made up. Two goldfish are swimming in a bowl, one says to the other one... Hey! where'd all the fish food go? The other says, you were sleeping and I ate it all, so the other fish says... (ready for this?) You're so Shellfish! ...Huh? Huh? Aaaaa LOL
+Bobster986 Brilliant my friend!!
A couple of scary moments around that tower but your piloting skills saved the day and you got some beautiful video. You were up pretty high. By the way, did you get that big Walmart drone?
Big box, small drone, 5-10 minutes flight time. Worth maybe $50?
What Camera are you using to film your Walmart excursion? GoPro Hero 5 maybe??? Love it....
