I wouldn’t go that far. Denny was also a powerhouse vocalist. And John, while not a strong singer, wrote some amazing harmonies. Michelle, John’s beautiful wife, was ornamental. What I find interesting about this “performance” (it’s a lipsynch) is that it’s a song about dancing, and the only one who can dance is the morbidly obese woman that John fought so hard to keep out.
@@patrickcolliano7320 Oh don't get me wrong - I don't mean to put down Michelle, John or Denny. There's no question every member of the group was uniquely gifted, and each of them brought something special to the party. It's the combination of those four individuals that made 'The Mamas & the Papas' legendary. Their harmonies were sublime, and together they generated sheer magic. But I think it's clear only Cass Elliot had the potential to make it as a major solo artist. As your post expressed so succinctly, Cass is the one who is moving beautifully here, and the one your eyes are irresistibly drawn to. For me, her voice is one of the 20th Century's most iconic. Yes it's sweet irony, as John Phillips fought long and hard to exclude her from the group, convinced her physical size would be an obstacle to their success - and always making her cruelly well-aware of his view! Cass not only proved John wrong, she emerged from the band's break-up in 1968 a fully fledged star. As the group's founder, leader, main songwriter, musician and arranger - and a big league narcissist - John struggled to handle her success with grace. It's such a tragedy her life was cut short at just 32, and we only got to see a fraction of her glorious solo career. I'm just glad when she died in London she was the toast of the town during her sell-out Palladium shows, rubbing shoulders with pop royalty including John Lennon and Mick Jagger. Cass had achieved success on her own - and on her own terms - free of John Phillips' control and the 'Mama' tag she loathed. She died in her sleep, happy in the knowledge she stood in no one's shadow, and had at last seen her own name in lights, as she fully deserved. I recently saw a 1980s interview with John Phillips, during which he was inevitably asked about Cass Elliot, her life and premature death. He was clearly defensive the moment she was mentioned, and launched into a well-worn speech about what great pals they were, and how they were always joking and joshing each other. This was how he re-framed his well documented, relentless mockery of her weight. In terms of their legacies, I think it's fair to say Cass Elliot had the last laugh!

It is really very simple, Cass was the star of the whole group. If it weren't for her the group, in my opinion, would not of been as successful without her. She is the one with the vocals. Great vocals at that! A gorgeous and hilarious persona and also her fashion, her fashion was just so delightfully stunning. I miss her deeply. 💕💞

The brilliant and innovative arrangements of the original and cover songs are what made this group so amazing. Nope, the best part of there biggest hit ( California dreaming ) is on Danny's voice, the girls help a lot, but this song would it be successful even without Cass Elliot in it, people over hype this lady just because those funny moves and vibes.
@@alessandroher09 Cass and Denny had the voices, John could write, Michelle was nice to look at but don't let her near a microphone - the 'band' was strictly a studio creation with a short shelf life.
I could watch and listen to Mama Cass all day long. She can break moves for any song, and that genuine voice. And is it me, or does Michelle always look lost and confused?
Funny isn't it, how Michelle was lauded as a great beauty - and was undeniably photogenic - but it was Cass you looked at when the group performed. She had enough star quality and charisma for the whole group - next to her they were all a bit beige, frankly!
Cass Elliot carried this group. They would not have been so highly prolific without her. It seems that her time with the group was often painful, but in the end it seems she found happiness. She and Michelle remained best friends until the end, and Michelle has said that Cass had accomplished just what she set out to do. And those dance moves are pure 🔥
Great music, and band! The film quality is of the times, and it does them no justice! First it made everyone of them Much wider than they actually were. I saw them, trust me. Great harmonies, energy, and Cass was The star vocally!
I found this group now in 2017..... (better late than never..!) Well I have heard the NAME Mamas and Papas but not been listening to their music (or might have heard but not noticed it for real... until now..) ... And I am not a young girl... I was born in the 60´s in fact..... It is funny I discovered this group now..... (discovered it for real I mean)
Excuse me? How is that possible? I'm assuming you were born in the USA? I was born in '64 and I can't remember a time NOT knowing them. My mom had the bathtub album and I distinctly remember hearing their songs on the AM radio in the car as well as Cass's later solo hits. You're not Amish are you?
***** God I hope so I hate to think she was there in the group just because she was the spouse of the group's leader and that she was nothing more then a pretty face! Of course Michelle had talent just not the same as Elliot!
I THINK CASS ELLIOT ACTUALLY HAD A VERY PRETTY IT NOT DOWNRIGHT BEAUTIFUL FACE that was 'obscured" by her weight and weight issues.. envisioning her at a much lighter body weight, i can truly see she was and would have been revealed as a beautiful woman and of course she had that AWESOME TALENT!..
thomas schmitz Her weight was a health issue, not a beauty issue. In fact I think one of the causes of her depression and lack of self-esteem had a lot to do with how bad she felt at the way she was perceived by people... ie, not beautiful enough, and no one near her was there to support her. Cass was perfect. Women should stop feeling pressure to look this or that way, and just be themselves.
Acho esse quarteto inesquecível; porém a presença de palco com sua voz e seu balanço da Class Eliot são o melhor do grupo. Pena que ela se foi tão cedo.

Case was getting it! Soul sister you better dance Ty for this I loved her!
Out of all the covers of this song this one is the best.
Darned right.....and I enjoy watching Mamma Cass dancing much more than I did that Jagger n' Bowie thing :D
They would have been nothing without Cass's amazing voice.
I love to watch Mama Cass feet!!!
Me too. That girl could dance.
Right!
She was mashin’ them taters... (Doing the mashed potato)
Same...but...that did look dangerous if I do say so myself. :0
It's incredible how she moves her feet♥️
Obsessed with Cass’s boots and dancing! Love you Mama ❤️
It doesn't matter what you wear...as long as you are there!!Groovy Mama Cass!!
Mama Cass is working those white boots.
Mama Cass ROCKS!!
Cass was wonderful. She led the energy in that great group.A special time back then and so missed looking back.
"Mamma" Cass was just wonderful. May she continue to rest in peace.
I could watch and listen to Mama Cass all day long. She can break moves for any song, and that genuine voice.
And is it me, or does Michelle always look lost and confused?
My second time tonight. Same song.
Funny isn't it, how Michelle was lauded as a great beauty - and was undeniably photogenic - but it was Cass you looked at when the group performed. She had enough star quality and charisma for the whole group - next to her they were all a bit beige, frankly!
El Alma del grupo es Mama Cass sin duda alguna, su voz prodigiosa, estilo y carisma
Dang man that freakin Mamma Cass could move like a freakin ballerina or something.
Throw down big Mamma.
Cara..como q essa mulher consegue s
Dançar tão lindamente assim? So a cass msm. e ela sabe q é linda...se achava por sabia!
Dance, Mama Cass! You go,girl!!
I love watching Cass dance/perform! She’s so much fun!
Great music, and band! The film quality is of the times, and it does them no justice! First it made everyone of them Much wider than they actually were. I saw them, trust me. Great harmonies, energy, and Cass was The star vocally!
Wow Cass looks great here and her moves. She's really having fun with this. Great post. I love it.
If you were born in the 60's, you ARE YOUNG!
Me too! Thank you, lady chance😀
Born in the 80's and I love mamas and the papas
Gotta love the shout out to Denny's home town of Halifax. He did us proud.
cass was the voice of the group
RIP Cass never treated right because of her weight. Best voice ever. Only one left all gone too soon. My favorite group ever and I'm Motown 💯.
Mama Cass is doing the "good foot" like James Brown. LOVE IT!!!
I really loved this version and Cass’s vocals were stupendous!!
This is just awesome!! I love it!
Cass just naturally owns it . . . . Michelle dances like a semi-drunk, jealous bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding.
I'm only 11 years old, I LOVE THIS SONG!
Mama cassie has a beautiful voice.R.I.P.I love older music the music now doesn't compare.
OMG! Mama Cass performance made it so damn lively! great dancing!
Mama Cass had moves!!!😅😅😅😅❤
Get it Momma Cass! Big girl can sing and dance.
I was just thinking the exact same thing - big girl can sing AND dance!
That was known as the "Momma Cass Shuffle" back then.
Thank God we got to have her for the time we did, wish it could have been 10 x longer.
Michelle may have had the looks in the group but Cass Elliot had the talent! The talent is the main thing!!
Michelle co-wrote most of the hits and her singing wasn't so bad. She's a very talented woman, as well as beautiful.
Michelle was the eye candy and what eye candy she was/is. She can act and sing a little. She's a better writer in my opinion.
SO FAR ahead of their time !!!!! Even today the're fresh as roses !!!!!!!! 2020
Acho esse quarteto inesquecível; porém a presença de palco com sua voz e seu balanço da Class Eliot são o melhor do grupo. Pena que ela se foi tão cedo.
Mama Cass was a G O O D E S S
Mama Cass beautiful as always, and that voice... great, great, all fabulous
...!!
Mama Cass Elliot was something else, love her rhythm and footwork
Cass can really dance ....love her!!! What a beautiful soul
Her fellow musicians in other groups knew Cass as a kind person, warm heart
She got Crosby stills mash together
She's on a different level here, still a great rendition of the song from all of them!
Cass getting her James Brown on. Go ‘head, girl. ✊🏽

Callin' out around the world -
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right

There'll be swingin' and swayin' and records playin'
And dancin' in the streets.
Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there.
So come on, every guy (come on) grab a girl
Everywhere around the world.
There'll be dancing -
They're dancing in the street
This is an invitation
Across the nation;
A chance for the folks to meet.
There'll be laughin', singin', and music swingin'
And dancin' in the streets.
