      Makes no difference with or to the emotion is unparralled. He responds and the result is undeniable magic. I have my own issues with Stevie Knicks as a human being, but this song is fucking gold. There is no denying their magic. Imagine if she had had don Henley's baby ? Queen. At Hammersmith 1975.
      “ In the Lap of the Gods” in concert is great.
      Not many people may like it but the lyrics seems personal.
      Too bad it’s a bad video in some ways. I wish they would have re-did the song in later decades.
      Lol. I love early 70’s Freddy. Lol.

      There's one minor detail left out of this video. The REASON Mick Fleetwood wanted to hire Lindsay was not random or arbitrary. Right after Lindsay and Mick met at Sound City, Fleetwood Mac's guitarist Bob Welch told Mick he was leaving the band. Mick was desperately looking for a new guitar player.

    Hard not to tear up. So powerful. Side story. When Stevie signed her song writing credits over to the band, she refused to give this song up. Instead, she gifted the rights to her mother.

    • @DexterHaven
      @DexterHaven 7 місяців тому +6

      That's good she had the liberty to do that still after releasing it as a single on the B side in '77.
      John Fogerty had no control over his CCR songs.

    • @DexterHaven
      @DexterHaven 7 місяців тому +3

      But if Stevie had no rights left to the song, she had nothing to give, and her mother got zilch.
      And if this comment is true, which seems plausible, Steve had no separate ownership rights to pass to her mom:
      "The song as arranged and produced legally belonged to FM and Warner Bros. It had already been released as a B side. Mick couldn't have given it to Stevie even if he wanted to. Stevie could have re recorded it for her album - but she wanted it as arranged and produced by Lindsey & FM. (listen to her piano demo and you'll know why)"

      @DexterHaven I read something where Stevie was commenting on this. She did gift the songwriting credit to her mom. She said how for years it seemed like it was a bum gift since it didn't really make any money. But then after this special she was like, well, turned out not to be such a bad gift cause now her mom gets the royalties.

    I bought the "Go Your Own Way" 45 RPM in 1977 so I was lucky enough to know "Silver Springs" as part of the RUMOURS package ("Silver Springs" was the B-side of "Go Your Own Way," the first single off of RUMOURS.) I loved the song from my first listen, and I'm glad it finally got the airing it deserved. Among its other qualities, it's a terrific and uplifting response to "Go Your Own Way" and as such heightens my respect for Stevie's position in her protracted face-off against Buckingham (not that any of that is really any of our business). I'm still surprised that more people haven't discovered the original BUCKINGHAM NICKS album, which is a beautiful collection of songs, particularly considering how young and inexperienced Stevie and Lindsey were when they made it. It's easily available on UA-cam. If you haven't heard it, be sure to give it a listen!

      Dreams was already a response to GYOW though far more disingenuous since Stevie was the one that wanted her freedom (she said years later that the opening lines were written from Lindsey's POV not hers). Silver Springs is an uplifting response? It's gorgeous but it's also kind of a stalker song. In a Rolling Stone 2009 interview Stevie said she knew then that Lindsey would haunt her for the rest of her life and he had - so she wrote SS to haunt him in turn. She wanted him to feel hurt every time he heard the song or her on the radio. She wrote it because she was upset he was bringing his new girlfriends around - said it made her physically ill and she'd have to leave the room. Note - this was after she'd dumped him and was seeing Don Henley (and bragging to Rolling Stone that Henley taught her to be a real rock star not like Lindsey who just wanted to sleep with his guitar).

    The artistry was that Stevie, of a lower range, sang the part of the soprano melody, and Christine harmonized with the Soprano range because, lets admit it. She could carry both "Perfect"ly. Spiritually, that's no irony either. Christine was pitch perfect, she hears the notes between the notes. Lindsey had to be the glue between the two ranges without going flat. Fleetwood Mac could sell any song with a flat line. Watch all three communicate with their eyes in this performance, the camera picks it up well. It's incredible

    All the way back in 1977 I worked a summer job at a popular women’s clothing store called Contempo casuals. Silver Springs was on our tape loop and I remember the first time I heard it I literally stopped in my tracks! I asked my manager what the name of this song was and she said I think it’s the best Fleetwood Mac song I’ve ever heard and we discussed the fact that it wasn’t on any of the albums. We spent that summer belting that song out whenever anybody wasn’t in the store. When someone would ask me what my favorite Fleetwood Mac song was, I’d always say Silver Springs and I think people would wonder whether I was making it up. Then came The Dance, and finally that beautiful song got it’s due. It’s a testimony to the timelessness of that song in the emotion and lyrical content that it became such a big hit more than 30 years after it was written!! It remains in my top three favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. Thank you for the backstory. It really informed the song for me. Also, I think I was one of three people in Southern California that owned the Buckingham Nicks album! 🤣 and you’re right it’s an excellent album, Crystal is superlative, and sound so much like Fleetwood Mac, that you then get a feel for how much that duo meant to the band as a whole.

    There was actually another chapter in the SILVER SPRINGS saga. In 1991, Stevie asked Fleetwood Mac for permission to add it to the track list of her upcoming album, TIMESPACE, and they refused. She had turned over the proceeds of the song to her mother, but Fleetwood Mac would not release it to her. She had a big fight with Mick Fleetwood and vowed never to work with Fleetwood Mac again.

      The song as arranged and produced legally belonged to FM and Warner Bros. It had already been released as a B side. Mick couldn't have given it to Stevie even if he wanted to. Stevie could have re recorded it for her album - but she wanted it as arranged and produced by Lindsey & FM. (listen to her piano demo and you'll know why) The reason she left is because the last FM album BTM struggled to make gold and FM was no longer helping her career but hurting it. Amusingly in retrospect she said then that she should have left when Lindsey did because there was no FM without him.

    I worked at a college radio station in Fremont, Ca back then. We had the 45 RPM 'Go Your Own Way', but I always played 'Silver Springs' when ever I could, and announced it as the best song from the new Fleetwood Mac album that's not on the album. The other day my 16 year-old daughter asked "Papa, who is Stevie Nicks?" and then played this heartbreaking and beautiful song on her iPhone.

    This beautiful and haunting song is proof that two people can share such a deep and powerful long history and love and yet… and yet…not find a way to be together…. 😢 But wow! Stevie got her chance to express all that she’d been holding in…and Lindsey sure felt it! Amazing! Love love this song and FWM is possibly my all time favorite band ❤

    Everyone always talks about how Stevie looked at Lindsey during that song, but if you watch the whole concert, she's constantly looking at him. Watch their other live performances and she does it as well. I think a lot of it is an act to evoke emotion from the people watching them and less about feelings they might have had 20+ years prior.

    Who knows what would have happened with the song if it were originally included on Rumours, but if you were a FM fan and already familiar with the original as a B-side (which prior to 1997 was hard to come by because the 45 to Go Your Own Way by that point was a rare collectors item) it was a huge surprise and gift to have the song recorded live and released as a single. I’ll never forget waking up that morning in 1997 to the clock radio playing the song. I knew The Dance was coming but I had not seen the MTV special yet. I don’t think it had aired yet. I remember thinking Wow this fantastic old song finally got its due. Say what you will about Mick Fleetwood’s choice, but it worked out great in the end.

    I grew up in Silver Springs, MD and the radio stations in the Washington DC area did start to play the song a couple of years after it came out but before the Tusk album. The DJ told a nicer version of the story of the origin. They said that the band saw the highway sign for Silver Spring when they were on tour for the previous album and Stevie had thought it was beautiful name. She and Lindsey were still riding high on the success and originally wrote the beginning verse while their relationship was on an upswing and she was just goofing around. Later when the two of them were ending the relationship she added the last rest of the song.

      I'm sure they have. They wouldn't be able to stand on the same stage and sing these songs about each other if they didn't come to terms with it. They'll never reconcile if you mean get back together by that. Lindsey is married with children, and I think the true love of Stevie's life was Tom Petty, and he's sooo unfortunately deceased now. I think she loved him a little more than he loved her though. One of those kinda things...she said she asked him to join The Heartbreakers, lol, and he said no, no, you're the front of FM. Stay there. But when they did that song, Stop Dragging My Heart Around, Stevie said she was just crushing on him so hard. Ahaha what woman wouldn't be though Tom was so beautiful and humble and cute and talented and just seemed like a regular sweet guy but also a rock star. When he died my mom was depressed for days. I swear, she was in mourning. It was probably extra sad for her because he died of an overdose of painkillers, and I was also addicted to pain meds at the time giving her much worries. Prince had died of an OD too and she kept saying it feels like pills are taking everything good from the world.

    Fleetwood Mac has been my favorite band since I was 9 years old. I'm 56 now. I remember the first time I heard Silver Springs. It was in the middle of the night on the radio and I never heard it again for a very long time. I knew then that I would never hear another song as beautiful as that one. Over time I would try to find it and luckily I did. I've heard all the different versions of it, and all of them are mesmerizing. When I was watching The Dance back in'97 and they started playing Silver Springs, tears flowed down my face. My beautiful favorite song since 1977 was finally getting the recognition it deserved. It's still my favorite song to this day. It still haunts me. It will follow me down til my last day.

    Happy 76th birthday, Stevie Nicks! Been a Fleetwood Mac/Stevie fan for 7 years now ever since GOTG Vol. 2 comes to mind and I even gotten Rumours on CD around that time. But I wanna get back into the fandom a lot more so I bought the vinyl version earlier this year. While I never gotten around checking out their albums until recently that I gave Fleetwood Mac '75, Tusk (an album that I never knew it even exist until I heard "Sara" and "Tusk" from the 1988 Greatest Hits compilation that I owned on vinyl that I got as an Xmas gift last year), Mirage and Tango in the Night for the first time.
    Personally my favourite FM albums outside of Rumours are: Tango in the Night, Tusk and Mystery to Me (which I got around listening to it last weekend). As any FM fan in my generation who hasn't listened to those albums, you definitely should since there's a lot of deep cuts that you probably don't even know they exist. Even I wasn't too big on the Peter Green or Bob Welch eras, Mystery to Me is definitely worth listening.
    Btw, great deep dive. The original recording of Silver Springs is great, but the 97 live version from The Dance is more superior.

    I was 17 when Rumours was released. It was on my turntable weeks. I wasn’t alone. I feel for kids today, music isn’t what it was back then. Artists like Glen Campbell had variety shows. Those shows were family shows, with a wide variety of styles showcased, Midnight Special was just for the kids and it was not to be missed.
    Where the music is recorded is just as important as the music itself. Many top 10 songs were recorded at Sound City. It is such an iconic place. If you haven’t seen Dave Grohl’s documentary, and you love music, it’s a must see. Another great studio is Philadelphia International Records which was famous for the Sound of Philadelphia. Rock on!
