  • This was a last minute afternoon trip. I decided to start dead sticking a swim bait between drops to see what would happen and it worked. I ended up catching my personal best Kingfish and culling a quick snapper limit. The drops are basically from drop to boating the fish. I didnt realize how fast the bite was out there until I started putting it to video and noticing the time frames. I think it says allot for the Red Snapper population off the Texas coast. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

If you could go back, would you have bought the two speed version of the mxl or are you happy with the single speed? I would be using the rod for kings and gags.

For that I would stay with the single speed.

What size gags? Kings and gags require two completely different methods. Kings require a very light smooth drag (< 5lbs, usually 2-3lbs) and a high gear ratio (fast retrieval rate). Large gags require high drag and lower gear ratios so you can "winch" them off of the bottom quickly. For kings I use 20-30lb mono for extra stretch when they run. For gags I would recommend braid with a short 80lb fluoro topshot for abrasion resistance.

Gag groupers are notorious for darting into rock piles as soon as they become hooked. You want to put a lot of pressure on them immediately so that they don't take line and cut you off on structure. I don't think of the MXL as a heavy reef fishing reel because of its moderate drag (less than 20 lb. for G2 and 15 lb. for the G1). I love my MXL MC reel for surf casting heavy baits, but I use a Daiwa Seagate 50H for groupers. The drag is rated at 25 lb. and it is filled with 80 lb. braid and heavy mono topshot. If you like Avets as I do, the EXW would be the one for big reef fish.

It’s 50lb braid although I am not sure what brand. I bought the reel at Roy’s Bait and Tackle in Corpus Christi and Rocky there spooled it for me at the time.
