He didn't quite have the sob backstory or really any rivalry with the mc. He was just FUCKING EVIL. And i LOVED him for it.
Personally I always thought what fucked up broly was the 10 inch knife stabbed into his infant stomach and the crying is what he latched onto for that traumatic moment. But people would rather have the meme, so oh well. 🤣

It took canonizing Gogeta and making him fucking blue to stand a chance and even then it was a victory Broly made him earn.

I used to think the same way you do about it until I heard this take, and now I have a whole new respect for the whole movie. It's just a lot of reading between the lines and knowing your lore. So Paragus and Broly are OG savage saiyans through and through as they never made it to Earth to change the way Goku and Vegeta did. The way the Saiyan hierarchy was built, was based on how high your power level was. Goku and Broly were born on the same day with two vastly different power levels. Goku was born to lower class only with a power level of 2, while Broly, born to probably a 1st class Saiyan at best, was born with a level of 10000. Goku's constant crying is meant to foreshadow him never back down to opponents or his own limits and constantly push forward against the next obstacle. By all accounts Broly should have been made royalty, and his outfit repesents that given the gold trinkets and robe like outfit, if not for the paranoia and fear of King Vegeta. In his and Paragus eyes, Broly power and potential were so terrifying the only solution they had, was get rid of him, so Paragus dressed and treated him as a royal in his own right. The flashback to Broly and Goku as babies isn't meant to mean that Broly remembers Goku from Day 1. Broly known his entire life how strong he is and great of power he has via his father and experience, but when he Goku meet for the first time as adults, Goku stands on even ground and holds his own. Broly is spending the entire rest of the movie thinking, "Kakarot, a low class warrior standing up to me, I won't have it." Then the fighting starts. This is why he doesn't attack Vegeta when he drops to his knees, the old Saiyan ways came back and saw no point in standing up to someone so strong. But we know Goku and our other saiyans, they needed...re-education.
To be fair the backstory never was confirmed. Broly was the legendary super saiyan of a primal race designed to dominate and kill. Him getting mad because Goku cried as a Kid is just a theory or misunderstanding by the fans. He had no real backstory he was just a killer wich was enhanced after what happened during the distruction of his planet and getting stabbed as an infant.
