Eyy I didn't know Kit was cultured. The love for Revy and Black Lagoon puts a smile on my face.
Black Lagoon, an anime by the creator of Hellsing that mixes GTA games and Quentin Tarantino movies together with modern piracy....just contemplate the sheer mad genius of that premise.
It's a great show and I think a lot of non-anime fans would actually enjoy it. I felt the same way about Tanya the Evil. It's really good if you can suspend disbelief over a child being an officer in the military during alternate science-fantasy WWI.
Sadly anime, despite being a broad genre, has a good deal of overall stigma, and some of it is well deserved. But definitely not all.
what i really like about black lagoon is that the author doesn't take his audience for imbecile or children. a lot of time he would make reference or hint to some conflict/war that happened in the middle east/south america etc and would not explain it further, he trust his audience to either already be educated on the question or to look themselve if they don't know the history of a specific conflict.
If you found the German sub crew bit interesting you need to see "Das Boot", it's a mini series from 1981 about just that. You really feel for these guys.
black lagoon is one of those anime that just feels as tho it ends too soon, and yet, you it keeps you coming back to see it again, it was only on my second re-watch that i realised they used almost 1:1 exact copies of real world everything, but with slight tweaks to avoid copyright, its amazing, considering how you barely notice it too, you just think, "oh they are drinking Heineken beer" and it basically is, it wasn't until i saw someone had pointed it out

In regards to the ‘no-no German’ stuff with them being shown as actual people. One of the biggest tragedies about what those people did was twist the noble, professional, loyal German and Prussian culture into something horrendous. An entire legacy of military honor and prestige sacrificed on the alter of mad-men’s ambition and evil. Imagine a timeline where they never came to power and that culture remained to this day. The entire aesthetic of ‘evil’ empire we know now would be gone as it’d be no different from the martial history and cultures other nations had.

10:32 this is what I hate about alot of depictions about the WW2 bad guys, yeah the higher ups, the leadership, and the "special" units like the SS were truly terrible people. But the general army, Navy and airforce for the most part was made up of ordinary people who just wanted to make it home alive and stuck between a tyrannical regime at their backs and the enemy at their fronts.
By the end of the war all that was left was conscripts forced to fight, often under the age of 18 or over the age of 50. Basically boys and old men with a gun pointed to their head and told to fight till they dropped.
From what I heard being on a Uboat really sucked and by the end of the war when the brits and Americans had better technology to find them under the water it was downright hellish. Out of the 40,000 men who crewed Uboats only 10,000 survived the war and made it back. It makes sense story wise that the captain of the Uboat was how do I put it, not hugely thrilled about the German government at the time but compelled to do his duty.
