I actually don't have a Frenzy Plant Meganium, but what I do have is a Tropius with Air Slash and Leaf Blade, and it did really well for me, especially in matchups against other grass types because they'd expect Razor Leaf instead, the double Grass thing is really smart on your end, I don't think I've seen it before, I did see double Ground like both Swampert and Whiscash, which I gladly took on with my Tropius, and sometimes even double Flying, Altaria and Skarmory in the same team, I completely destroyed these with my Probopass, knowing exactly what to lead with can be very tricky though. Your team is excellent but very specifically Anti-Meta, if you faced an opponent with an unexpected, more diverse team I believe it would still struggle a bit, looking at your team my team is very catered to take it on for example: Probopass, Blaziken & Tropius. Fantastic team though, your commentary is quite good too, this is my first time seeing your videos and I really enjoyed it!
100% agree with your points here! I was mostly sick of seeing the same mons in GBL great league so the timing of my line for me personally worked really well. Safe to say, people adapted and changed things up, which was definitely refreshing to see :)
I would like to congratulate you that tonight one famous Japanese streamer uses your line up and finds great success by gaining 100 point in 25 matches. Hope this would help your channel grow by reaching wider audiences.
Apart from fire pokemons, one concern of your line up is that shiftry would be fainted very fast when faced with charmers. But strangely, it seems not many trainers in top rank uses them.
@@withcarename Very good point! And yes, that's true, mainly because the prevalence of Registeel makes it a hard losing matchup if they get locked into that head to head. Charmers either win really hard or lose really hard so it's a gamble. Even against my team, if they lead with a charmer, they likely have lost as well.
A lot of people definitely tried your team. I've seen 2 teams like this today. I start with thunder fang steelix, clefable and deoxys def, was able to put them down twice. Switching to shiftry - I switch to clefable.
Small detail: You said Mawile resists all moves on your team except Earthquake. It doesn't. Since Fairy is weak to steel, Flash Cannon actually deals neutral damage.
bro love your viddds!!! watched a few of them and you literally did a step by step explanation for everything which really helped me out in my understanding of go battle league pokemon! Keep it up!
Solid team! I'm gonna invest in Shiftry and give it a try. I've been running legacy Dewgong, Alolan Marowak, and Medicham with Psychic and PuP. Love seeing other non meta teams!!
Hey, Caleb. I could use your input. So I'm running a variation of your team, with Lanturn substituting for Meganium. My thought process for the choice of Lanturn is as follows: - I'm mitigating the triple fire weakness - Skarmory and Shiftry can more than hang with the mudbois, especially with shields gone - Neutral hits on Registeel that gradually add up are more than a win in my book - With some finesse, Lanturn can handle the rockbois (Bastiodon and Probopass) - A harder counter to non-Play Rough Azumarill sounded appealing to me My question to you is what do you reckon are the pros and cons to this?
Great work, bro!! I really hate giving up switch priority in GBL, so building a team that sacrifices switch priority so often totally blew my mind! Double Grass is also crazy hard to pull off, but you play it so well! Very GG's! Also, I will have more Granbull spice for you very soon! 👀
What could be a good replacement for Meganium if I don’t have one and also don’t have a venusaur? I’m currently going to try this team with a deoxys in hopes I can still cover some matchups.
VersusTheInternet Victribell and Ivysaur are both pretty good grass types. I wouldn’t recommend using Victribell with Shiftry though, makes for quite a glassy team
10 minutes after watching this video i started my 1 set of five matches and on the fourth match i went up against this team...was tough but because i expected it since he made the exact same switches as you i was able to anticipate and counter him and take the match

Love your commentary. I learned a lot. Would it be possible for you to describe more about your thought process on predicting what other pokemon your opponent may have? I understand it at a basic level but could benefit from some insight: examples from a top player. Thanks for the vid.
This tactic is pretty dope. I have been using team of Jirachi, Mew (psyschock, bulldoze) and Altaria -> Now i switched Altaria with Shiftry and it has changed a lot for me! (for better of course) - Jirachi is like Skarmory ->strong against fighters, fairys! Shiftry is Shiftry and Mew has ground type attack like Meganium (maybe less tanky, but due to its vast movepool my oponnets are disoriented) xD
Please put the team time stamps into the comments like your follow up video. Using your team now at rank 9 and want to reference the counters easily, please.
Believe it or not, when I was using double mud, I narrowly beat a double grass team. Led Skarmory, opponent led Bastiodon. Sac swapped to Swampert, opponent brought in Venusaur, forced a shield, farmed with Skarmory, flash cannoned Bastiodon, switched to Whiscash, and was shocked to see a Meganium, but I landed the blizzard and was able to outpace my opponent to 2 mud bombs before they hit 3 frenzy plants (since I still had both shields), so I was able to win. It was crazy
Thanks for your video. With your advice, you helped this 69 year old woman get an 18 win streak! Best advice I’ve seen on the battles. I’m subscribing. Thanks again! 😆
Tried out for a set of battles, and in two of them got against a fire pokemon, a Charizard in the back (and still won because it didn't shield the foul play) and a Snorlax-Magcargo-Sableye which i lost by a sliver of health on its sableye. Great comp and really enjoyable
With someone like me who does not have a frenzy plant meganium with the recent changes to bullet seed is sceptile a viable option with leaf blade and earthquake? Planning to use this team when all the leagues are available.
Sceptile is definitely a better with Bullet Seed than Fury Cutter in many situations. The main difference is that Sceptile isn't very bulky so you'll need to invest in shields for it even against Azu but Meganium doesn't need to do that, so it could be a little harder to run Sceptile over Meganium, but there's definitely potential there.
Yeah I was fairly lucky in this streak. There were some small moments of lag but the video is sped up to 250% so it's harder to tell. I would have been heated if my streak ended due to lag
I used Fire Fang Mawile as a lead with 890 CP, not even powered up all the way, and still went 4-1 on a set at rank 7 lol it's really good and one of my favorite Pokemon in terms of design and typing 👊🏻🔥
Would be Probopass w/ thunderbolt & rockslide, whishcash w/ mudbomb & blizzard and meganium w/ frenzy plant & eq be a good lineup? Whishcash for steel types e. A registeel and altaria, probo for skarmory and meganium for whishcash, swampert and azumarill...
It's solid. The main issues will be Azu, Registeel, and Toxicroak, which are very popular in the meta. I think that's why more people lead towards Regi/Azu for their anti-flyer counters
Thanks so much for this awesome team! I really need to try this out, I’ve been struggling ever since hitting rank 8. Can’t believe how many rage quitters there were 😂😂😂 Priceless!
M00SEPUNK I would wager there would be less rage quitters if the lag wasn’t so bad. I try to finish out even losing battles but when you get destroyed purely cuz of lag it’s pretty difficult not to. Especially if it keeps happening. The trick is to not throw ur phone, lol
Timothy Retza I totally agree with you and have had my fair share of lag, but in this video I can tell they are definitely rage quitting and not due to lag.
Ran this team at 2700 yesterday for 25 games. Ran into 6 FF mawiles (all leads) and 5 Aloan Marowaks. Couldn’t beat Mawile teams under any conditions. Lost to 3/5 marowak teams. Also hit two double flyer teams that I couldn’t beat and struggled with galvantula & Dewgong. Still, I really liked the team. @calebpeng- Thank you for the great content. It looks like you’ve single handedly shaped the GL meta though lol.
Amazing team! Really made the gbl a lot more fun for me ! :D One question tho: what happens if your opponent also leads skarmory ? @@kingbigglez4068 so on Awak running Fire spin with Bone club/shadow ball. Sandslash has Powder snow with Ice Punch / Gyro ball and the usual Altaria moves of dragon breath with Dragon Pulse and Sky attack
I only play the main series games. But my signature Pokémon in competitive play is an eviolite Bayleef. (Eviolite is an item that multiplies your defenses by 1.5 if you are a pre evo it makes Bayleef take more hits than meganium) So if any team in any game has a member of the Chickorita family that does well I must watch lol
Hahah that's awesome! My last main series game was Silver (the original, not the remake) so I'm still a bit lost on the nuances of competitive play in that series, but I'll definitely take a look eviolite Bayleef if I ever get back into it :)
Hey awesome vid, is there any other possible grass mon that could substitute meganium on this team? All of my frenzy plants are over 1500, and I got no other frenzy plant user below to use as well. Any advice would be highly appreciated, I would love to try out this team
Sceptile with Leaf Blade and Earthquake might work. It's much glassier though so it'll need some shields to protect it. You don't need frenzy plant on sceptile since it usually performs better with leaf blade
@@CalebPeng damn, thanks so much for responding, keep making great content! Luckily I have managed to acquire FP Meganium, and I cant wait to test the team

Great vid, bro. Can the team work with an AlolaChu instead of the Meganium? Or any other non-legacy move pokemon for that matter? I'm fairly new to the game and don't own any legacy grass types.
Unfortunately Meganium is pretty key to this strategy. Hopefully some locals will have extras they can trade you. Sceptile with LB and EQ might be a decent substitute though
Unfortunately, Meganium is pretty crucial to the strategy. I recommend asking some locals to see if they have any extras to trade. Sceptile with LB and EQ can maybe work as well
Shiftry actually has the potential to take out Charizard if you land the Foul Play. If they switch out, your skarmory can farm down the next mon and drop sky attacks on the charizard. Zard is pretty frail so it's much easier to deal with than other fire users like FF Mawile and Alolan Marowak imo.
Hey! I started watching your video because I was actually having trouble with some other mons but turns out if people start using your mons, maybe I should continue using my team ;) Ggs! ~Tiffanini
Interesting, I was running a DD, skar, clef team that wasn't seeing a lot of success. I wonder if I should break it out if the meta shifts more this way.
Am I missing something on the Skarmory vs. Altaria matchup? If I don't shield the first Sky Attack and they end up using 2 shields then I don't even get a chance to use my second? What am I doing wrong?
Ugh, I hate that I love you. It'd be one thing if you were just meme-y, but this is actually so legit. My friend does double grass, but uses double frenzy plant. I like the Shiftry because regi can't *easily* threaten it
Hi. I’m from Guatemala!! Great video. I’ve been using a medicham, bastiodon and azumarill with ice beam and hydropump. I haven’t been able to rank up to rank 9. I do have a shiftry rank 2, a registeel Rank 34. Do you have any advice about the Pokémon I have and the order to use them? I don’t have a Megamind with frenzy plant available. Thank you very much!!
How does the team do against Alolan Marowak? I feel like that is the most common Fire type. Shiftry definitely has that matchup but since shiftry is the sackswitch it will usually fall early in the match and if Awak is in the back I feel like that could be an issue
Great question! An alolan marowak team was actually what I ended up losing to for this streak to end. But I've only run into 1 other alolan marowak and was able to handle it with shiftry pretty well. You'll likely need to bait when shields are up but shiftry resisting both bone club and shadow ball will give it some chances. And alolan marowak has to land shadow balls to handle skarmory so it'll really depend on what they have in the back. I've found fire fang mawile to be a bigger issue to deal with.
Im using umbreon, skarmory and cherrim. Only started playing in september so I dont have a lot of decent pokemon or a lot of candy to power up pokemon. Done pretty well, gotten a few cobalion/metagross/starters. Just wish the connection wasnt bad sometimes, very annoying where it just lags.
I've had my fair share of lag matches as well. I don't usually share them on UA-cam though since they don't make for great content. Something that helped me a lot was playing on data rather than WiFi. Even with 1 bar of data, it's usually more reliable than high signal WiFi. I hope that helps!
Would this still work with the current meta? Cherrim and Castform are realistic threats.. And what about Bullet Seed for Shiftry? According to the threatscore of pvpoke it is worse than snarl
This team is very similar to what I have been using. I have been trying out several different combinations in my team but Meganium has always stayed in my teams.
Hi Caleb, thanks for the video! Really interesting! I was wondering if Meganium also works without Frenzy Plant, because I don't have one at the moment and it's going to be impossible to get one before the season ends.
Unfortunately, Meganium is pretty crucial to the strategy. I recommend asking some locals to see if they have any extras to trade. Sceptile with LB and EQ can maybe work as well
I've been running a similar team but with raichu over meganium. It gets rekt by altaria, registeel core and bastiodon doe. Any tips should I change team or lead skarm over achu?
Good question! I swap straight to shiftry because meganium can survive a flamethrower. Both meganium and shiftry can handle registeel, but shiftry does it better with shields up whereas meganium does it better with shields down.

My last main series game was Silver (the original, not the remake) so I'm still a bit lost on the nuances of competitive play in that series, but I'll definitely take a look eviolite Bayleef if I ever get back into it :)
used this team and went on a 16 win streak! thank you for the useful advise
@@KS-rs2jz That's awesome!!! Keep me posted and best of luck! :)
@@CalebPeng 20/25 wins the first day, climbed 140 mmr solely because of team! Unfortunately, the lag destroyed all peogress yesterday , but started today wih 5-0 sweep! Awesome.content and awesome team, keep up the good work
@@KS-rs2jz Good stuff!!! Sorry to hear about the lag, but hopefully you'll keep up with the sweeps :)
Thanks for this tutorial, I dont have shiftry, wich pokemon do you recommend to replace it?
Shiftry is unfortunately a bit hard to replace due to its unique typing and moveset. Hopefully you can find a seedot to get one eventually
Nice streak, but I haven't seen any fire-type, think the outcome would b different
Very true! Fire usage might go up soon but at the moment, this team tears through what's typically used in GBL
Only fire type thats commonly used is like bastodion's charge move i think? Don't see charizard or something too often.
That and fire spin alolan marowak
Funny how I see a Charizard or Alolan Marowak every other battle...its been playing hell with my own meganium registeel team
@@Jake-cm9jj I tried this team 3 times, 2 times an Alolan Marowak and 1 time Bastiodon in the other team. Lost all 3
Awesome team / vid! Any suggestions for a replacement Pokemon for someone like myself that doesn’t have a frenzy plant meganium?
Unfortunately, Meganium is pretty crucial to the strategy. I recommend asking some locals to see if they have any extras to trade. Sceptile with LB and EQ can maybe work as well
I love this team, I tried it out for myself, but what do you do in the occasion of Charizard or any other fire type? I'm in the 2000s rank 8.
@@CalebPeng Alright, thank you very much!
Hey! I started watching your video because I was actually having trouble with some other mons but turns out if people start using your mons, maybe I should continue using my team ;) Ggs! ~Tiffanini
I don’t have a frenzy plant Meganium. Can this team still work with a different grass move?
Interesting, I was running a DD, skar, clef team that wasn't seeing a lot of success. I wonder if I should break it out if the meta shifts more this way.
Timing for your team might be perfect :)
Actually your line up is not the most meta team. The most meta one is DD, registeel and azumaril as shown in kieng video.
You were having problems because the most popular choice of registeel walls both skarmory and Clefable.
what's dd?
Pyrotechnic 17 Defense deoxys
Am I missing something on the Skarmory vs. Altaria matchup? If I don't shield the first Sky Attack and they end up using 2 shields then I don't even get a chance to use my second? What am I doing wrong?
yeah me too sometimes. @caleb any help?
Hats off man, such a superior team with great consistency. Tried it out today after having watched this vid about 3 times and ran 22-3 🙂
That's awesome!!! I'm so happy that it worked well for you :)
Thank you for the kind words!
Great video, subbed! Looking forward to more of your content :)
Thank you! :)
Ugh, I hate that I love you. It'd be one thing if you were just meme-y, but this is actually so legit. My friend does double grass, but uses double frenzy plant. I like the Shiftry because regi can't *easily* threaten it
:)
I am gonna try this team for my very first battle in season 1. And you have a very lovely cat.
Shiftry with Registeel and Azumaril can be a solid line. I'd lead with azumarill incase you run into a fighting type
Caleb Peng Thank you very much!!!
Only meta Pokémon I use is Wiggleytuff but I lead with Houndoom with Toxicroak work really well
Im using umbreon, skarmory and cherrim.
I must get a shiftry for GL now! I wish I had a frenzy plant Meganium, i regret not taking advantage of the community day last December.
Hopefully someone local has a spare they can trade you :)
Caleb Peng i think Meganium with Petal blizzard and earthquake will do decent. I dont have a meganium with frenzy plant too 😭
@@tmoneyy5697 I thought so too but petal blizzard takes hell lot of a time to recharge 😂
Defeats the purpose of spamming frenzy plants.
Tenzin D it’ll reduce some bait potential but can still be a solid closer with no shields
I got hundo meganium and it evolved at 1600 cant use him on gbl also hundo altaria so sad
after this video
everyone: lead with a fire fang mawhile
[GOOD EFFORT]
Anti meta teams rock, but it's when you encounter anti meta teams that throw your game plan off
Haha so true!!! But I never mind losing to other anti-meta teams. I always give respect to creativity :)
This team is very similar to what I have been using. I have been trying out several different combinations in my team but Meganium has always stayed in my teams.
Meganium is amazing! :)
Sceptile with LB and EQ can maybe work as well
13:26 you didn’t use your charge on skarmory?
Haha yea, I was trying to get to Flash Cannon but couldn't get to it in time
You should use alomomola in great leauge it’s mega thicc bulk but watch for grass types
Mawile also doesn't resist flash cannon from skarm, it's neutral thanks to the fairysubtype
Yup! Realized that after I made the video haha. Thank you for the correction!
is frenzy plant a must have? or is the petal blizzard/ earthquake combo okay
Unfortunately, Frenzy Plant is pretty crucial. Hopefully some locals have some that can trade one to you if you don't have one already.
I've been running a similar team but with raichu over meganium. It gets rekt by altaria, registeel core and bastiodon doe. Any tips should I change team or lead skarm over achu?
I've been running fire fang mawile for this season and it's been pretty consistent. Thanks for suggesting a bunch of grass and steel types!
Haha you're welcome :)
thank you for sharing. Amazing team, had a lot of succes, and really helped me learn to use shiftry (favorit gen 3 pokemon) :D
Thank you for the kind words! :)
Hi Caleb, is frenzy plant an exclusive move for meganium or can i TM it?
It's an exclusive move. Hopefully some locals have extras they can trade you
Interesting team....
When you face a Bastiodon lead, would you swap to Shiftry or Meganium?
and what is the better counter for Registeel?
Good question! I swap straight to shiftry because meganium can survive a flamethrower. Both meganium and shiftry can handle registeel, but shiftry does it better with shields up whereas meganium does it better with shields down.
@@CalebPeng alright, swap to Shiftry!
And then straight Leaf Blade spam?
Meraadj correct! It puts a ton of pressure on them if they stay in or they’ll switch out
