    I was stationed there 1982 to 1984. Got to watch a launch of pretty much every KC-135 on the base in an "Elephant Walk" in support of the RAF during the Falklands war. It was impressive. By the time one aircraft was clearing the runway, the next had already started the takeoff. Got to watch from the end of the runway. I was an AGE troop, so, we supported the take off with equipment, did a clean up, refuel and redeployment of ground equipment for the recovery. A very busy day.

    Back in the late 1970’s, TDY to Mildenhall with our C130, remember watching the KC135 take off and barely clear the fence

      Indeed. There 4 times from 90-95. Watch the air attack on Baghdad start from a pub, around midnight local, throwing darts. Back then, the locals loved the business brought by the GI's stationed at MIldenhall and Lakenheath. Great people, best fish and chips ever. REmember watching the SR-71's takeoff, since i was working midshift, fixing C-130's.... best time of my life.

      I wonder what is going on? Ever since P0US last wk went to WW there are crazy amount of these flying in an orbit day and night all around the US. Also, other strange aircraft. I check everyday and this is not normal.

      The original KC-135A was equipped with J57 turbojets, 10K thrust. These are the KC-135R with CFM56's @ 22.2K thrust.

      @@RedArrow73 they got reengined in between as well. The PW J57's were replaced with PW TF33's, then only recently they again got replaced with GE/CFM F108

      The KC-135 came before the B707. The KC-135 was a Direct descendant of the the Boeing 377-80 (?). The. B707 is wider and is fabricated from a different aluminum alloy, 7076T6 for the 707, vs 2024 Duralumin for the KC.

      The 135 and 707 are siblings, both are descendants of the Dash 80. The 707 is wider because the airlines wanted six abreast seating, which was offered by Boeing's competitor (Douglas) in the DC-8. Boeing had to widen the 707 to compete for airline sales. The 707 has other differences from the 135 as well, such as leading edge slats. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_367-80

      @@JishyFishy4106 Not sure what engines they were, thinking the J57. I remember when I was TDY there in 1975 the sound of them taking off sounded like a rocket. Had a crackling sound, which I was told was the water injection to increase thrust.

    Vipers810, Mildenhall is not designated as an Air Base, instead, the USAF leases the facility from the Ministry Of Defense, and as such, the base is designated as RAF Mildenhall. Otherwise, great video!

    • @Vipers810
      @Vipers810  8 років тому +3

      Hmm ok thats interesting. I know this is a RAF base used by the USAF just like Lakenheath and Fairford. But i thought every military airfield no matter what country it is from is called an airbase.
