USAF Boeing KC135 Stratotanker screaming power-up & loud takeoff

  • This is LOUD! One of the final videos I shot at the Avalon International Airshow 2015, two USAF Boeing KC-135R Strato tankers powering up for departure after the show.
    This two tankers are based out at Hickham Field Air force base in Honolulu Hawaii, and fly for the Pacific Air Forces 15th wing and the Air National Guard 154th wing.
    The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is the main aerial refuelling aircraft in the USAF and Air National Guards inventory. First flown in 1956, these aircraft have been a mainstay for over 50 years. The first aircraft departing was built in 1959, with the second built in 1963 (young one!) Despite their age, many of them have very low flight hours, quoting one of the USAF crew members "They where all built & sat around for a cold war that never happened" Originally sporting Pratt and whitney engines like the Boeing 707 (which the KC-135 is heavily based) they have been re-engined with CFM56 engines which provide 50% more fuel uplift, 25% decreased fuel consumption and 96% noise reduction from the original models (I shudder to think how loud they where!)

    Being a retired KC135 Crew Chief. I miss that sound and power these engine give off. When your are inside during takeoff it such a feeling. sitting in the instructor seat you feel being pushed back into the seat is great, sitting in the jump seat, leaning to the side it such a rush. Working on them is the most rewarding feeling, when you know have good working plane. I miss working and being around them. I give anything to be back on them again.

    I was a engine mech on the KC135 -A water wagon J57s at Travis. I used to love the MITO takeoffs. Those whistling S***cans barely got to Vr 165kts at the 10k markers. By the time you were at 10°pitch up, goodbye concrete, you've used up 12k feet runway.

      The scary thing? The USAF Air Force say these are 96% quieter than the Pratt and Whitney engines! God they must have made your ears bleed! I agree with you, the CFM engines look excellent on the 707 frame, gives it an aggressive look

      That is a common misconception. The K135 came before the 707. The 707 has a lot of more modern features that the 135 doesn't like leading edge flaps and a stickshaker stall warning. When I was flying them the 135 didn't even have altitude alert, but that may have been added with the avionics upgrade. I last flew the 135 in 1988 an the 707 in 1989.

    • @turbotroll8605
      @turbotroll8605 5 років тому +3

      The pilot on that A300 over-stressed the rudder by banging it from side to side, in direct contravention of Airbus instructions. But American Airlines thought they knew better, and taught pilots to do it that way. Just like the engine that fell off one of their DC-10s, McDonnell Douglas had the correct procedure for engine removal and installation in their guidelines, but AA had to take short-cuts to save a few dollars and the rest is history. Fortunately there is little tolerance of deviation from standard operating procedures these days, including in the USAF

    You want to hear loud, one of these landed over my snow blower about 2:00 am on the overrun at Fairchild AFB in 1969. It was super foggy and the tower operator forgot we were out there. I heard a noise getting louder and louder but didn't have a clue what was happening until the landing lights came on. I could only sit and watch it go over at that point. Surprisingly, it was very quiet behind the engines, that was, until my shotgun driver woke up!

      The're going to be with us for decades to come. The KC-46s coming in are to augment, not replace, the 135 fleet. The USAF bought 820 135 variants during the 50s and 60s.

    During the Yom Kippur War, three of them would take off on one-minute headways. The first was still blasting down the runway when the second started rolling, and he was still blasting down the runway when the third started rolling. If anything went wrong, the tank farm was just down the hill from the takeoff path. It was impressive indeed.

      Absolutely. I used to live under the flight path of a SAC base. The B-52s were bad, but the KC135s simply screamed. I could cover my ears. My dog couldn’t. Although we moved as soon as I could afford to, she was pretty much deaf by the time she was 10.

    • @TS-ev1bl
      @TS-ev1bl 2 роки тому +2

      @@richardkev3077 If you thought the 135's were louder than the B-52's at the SAC base near you than it must have been H model bombers, which was the only model of B-52 that got the low bypass TF33 fan engines, which did not have or need water injection. On the other hand, the A - G model B-52's had the same water injected J57 turbojets as the A model KC-135, but the bombers had eight of them instead of four on the tankers. You can imagine which was louder at takeoff power. Added to that, I've heard due to the way the engines were mounted in pairs, the J57 equipped B-52's (all but the H models) gave off an unearthly howl at takeoff power in addition to the typical shriek of the turbojet engines, which the A model tankers did not.

The 17 was a slightly bigger 07 prototype,and it fit the military specs slightly better than the 07. It's been over 35 years since I read about this,but it seems like the 17 had wings better suited to later modifications, and Boeing just kept it in their pocket for this aircraft. Never a civilian version!

    If these planes could somehow fit GE90-155B's on them then imagine the sight and the sound

    • @Turboy65
      @Turboy65 2 роки тому +1

      The nacelle diameter of the -155B is 22 inches GREATER than the fuselage diameter of a 707. The 707 and 135 share the same fuselage height, but the 135 fuselage is 17 inches narrower. So those GE90s would literally be 22 inches taller than the fuselage and 39 inches wider. The landing gear would have to be extended by about eight feet!

    Am I the only one who feel like CFM56 on KC-135s look better than JT3D KC-135s?

    Second one was a very heavy girl, full of gas, took almost the whole runway distance before rotating

    Sorry can't hear all that "screaming" power. (I spent most of my career on the B1-B.) All the same turning all that JP-8 into the sound freedom is awesome even if it is a gentle purr.

    1:31 Somebody screwed up! Notice the boom operator's outer window is open! Either that or somebody is in the boom pod during take-off.

      Kntryhart it's not a big no no for it to be open on takeoff

      It was when I was a Boom Operator and I am sure the Checklist specifies that all windows and doors to be secured.

      The boom sighting door should be closed per the checklist. However, I would guess that someone is in the pod on takeoff for the view.

    Nothing loud about that at all. You want loud? Try the same airframe with four J57s at full water injection.

    Thats not loud at all and the CFM 56's it now has have been derated to 75% power. Now compared to when the A/C had the JT3's its really quiet.
