While David Chase's hit television series The Sopranos mostly focusses on themes of the Italian mafia, Italian culture, sex, religion, and masculinity. However, a majority of the show centres around themes of depression, suicide, mental illness, and death. But why?

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thanks for your patience with the upload of this video. I put lots of time and effort into the script and editing of this one. Please enjoy! Thanks for watching the video!
Did I miss any characters that suffered from mental illness? Let me know down below 👇🏻
"When we first meet Tony he's a boss"?
Nope
@@AWMK101 Captain is technically a boss of a crew

This is excellent. I was wondering why I got depressed binge watching it! Now I get it…
Livia was kind of a reverse clown: crying on the outside while laughing on the inside.
Nice
Yeah she's even more of an evil person when you describe it that way.
A wise one 😂🎉
Lol...nailed it!
She’s like a woman with a Virginia ham under her arm, crying the blues because she has no bread.
I never understood the genuine hate towards AJ he feels like a real teenager going through points of losing his innocence figuring out his dad is a mobster and to being a loser, to a guy partying, to his depression it all felt very relatable
I mean I get it he is a dumb kid but people in the show has done worse things than him
Thought it'd be interesting if his friends died, broke his school's trophy case and messed them up, makes excuses for the smallest things no matter how serious the situation (getting Tony clean clothes), tried to kill his uncle and assaulted other people trying to escape, held a guy down while his friends poured acid on his leg, general hypocrisy like driving a nice car and (going back to his nature of using excuses) saying it was fuel efficient (it wasn't). Those are situations that aren't relatable and hardly excusable for regular people, AJ knew about the mob but was disconnected from it. Despite all his pretentiousness and pondering, he chose to do the easy thing instead of the productive thing. It's not that hard to get.
Most who hate AJ are themselves 'AJs' who are trying hard to distance themselves from that fact.
@@Sernival Well we aren't murdering sociopaths but we still relate to and understand Tony wjthwith his mental health
@Fat Dom meadow got way more nice treatment i don't blame AJ for always being mad at carm and tony
You could say Adriana was suffering from depression while she was being pressured by the FBI. All that stress made her develop the digestive disorder.
Good point. Funny thing is that I always felt bad for those selling information about the sopranos to the feds… or tried to at least. All resulting in tragedy. And we be like: they didn’t deserve a death like that
You don’t develop it, it’s genetic. I have UC. It sits in your body just like cancer. Just sitting there waiting to come out. Now don’t get wrong stress is the main contributor to Crohn’s and UC. Stress, food, medicine.
@@heyitsme1534 „Source: trust me bro i have it“
LOL what? XD
Of course you can develop depression
@@heyitsme1534 Ade didn't have UC she had IBS
Remember, clinical depression has nothing to do with external circumstances. You can live in paradise and still be depressed. That's the difference between clinical and situational depression. The latter is normal, the former is not
No cap, The Sopranos is the one show that actually made you glamorize the life “AT FIRST” but then you see the destruction, death, pain, and mental crisis throughout the series, One minute your cheering on for Tony or Chrissy but then they get haunted by they past crimes and their guilty misdeeds. It’s truly haunting to have such guilt over you and then numb it by living the high life.
pretty much all mob films do that. even the most obvious the godfather goodfellas etc. they all do that.
BABE WAKE UP, NEW SOPRANOS THEORIES VIDEO
@Austin Fuck you says the ultra virgin
Hey Ian did she even really exist?
Do you know how long, I've been waiting to hear those words
@@rustyshackleford3160 hi dale 👋
Don’t call your dad babe, I told you already.
You forgot that Paulie had "some issues" and had to see someone too. Although he forgot to ask the ghostbuster where to find Mathew Bevilaqua...
He only deals with the dead.....
Paulie only had those issues when he was reminded of them, he put it out his head."Tell Tony & Paulie 3 o'clock"& seeing the psychic is when it bothered him.
The fuck you been talkin' to?
When I first listened to Tony's words at Dr. Melfi's after AJ tried offing himself, about having rotten genes etc., it hit me hard. Me, my father, his father and grandfather all have been battling with heavy depression, and my mother's cousin committed suicide due to depression. It was one of the first times I ever saw the concept of depression being vocalized, it made me feel better.
That scene was amazing with the acting.
@@molasorrosalom4846 That scene is so powerful to me. I have a teenage son and have had some heavy emotional moments with him. This scene for a moment you see Tony comforting AJ saying "Its ok baby" . I tear up every time I see this scene.
depression is part of life. another part of life is that no matter how fucked up, you HAVE TO accept things the way they are and move forward from there. fail to do so, and you ll lose yourself forever. take my advice, accept it for what it is and move forward. become a better version of yourself everyday. THAT is the cure.
@@chuckn4851 no it is. because what you hvae to accept for what it is, will always come back to haunt you. it will test you over and over again. you can only win if you truly accept things for what they are if you can not change them. simple as that.
You gotta get over that
The color tone is what's Most notable about rewatching SeASON 1. Bright colors, lighting always bright & clear. And even the tone of how Tony & Carmela deal with each other is more playful and light in the early seasons compared to the last few seasons on the show.
Yeah, the show went from that 90s carefree sepia tone to a dreary desaturated tone with heavy vignette, really set the tone for the show and what's to come with every season
the tone in Season 5 reminded me of the godfather 1 for some reason
Season 6 lacked colours and everyday it looked cloudy
@@deadchanneldontwatch7347 Dark, dreary and depressing. Just like the show came to be in those final seasons.
Season 5 was my favorite.
@@rustykuntz94 That was life b4 the pressure of being boss hit Tony. It did affect his whole family, but that's what he asked 4.
Uncle Jun crying at the funeral and then asking what’s the point of it all at the doctors office should also be noted
Everyone feels that way from time to time
Uncle jun was definitely depressed too, we saw how 4 different generations dealt with depression, uncle Juns generation were the strong, silent type and never spoke about those issues, Tony’s generation talked about it a little but still did what needed to be done, Christopher’s generation smoked and drunk but still stayed strong, AJ’s generation cried and moaned about their feelings.
Video should be titled “a world surrounded by a couple of three things”
Couple a tree tings
Food also plays a huge role as a coping mechanism for the characters. Obviously food is a part of Italian culture but we constantly see Tony eating as a form of comfort while he and other characters Vito, Bobby etc are mocked for their weight. The scene where Tony & Aj are bonding by making sundaes is just passing the baton of unhealthy cooping mechanisms.
You forgot to mention the drug dealer who jumped from the bridge in season 1. It was some sad shit. Muddafucka said he don't wanna live no more.
😂😂😂
I always felt like AJ was the most tragic Sopranos character. I felt this terrible pity for him but I also loathed him because he was such a spoiled idiot. I said somewhere else, I feel like AJ Soprano is the physical embodiment of generational trauma.
This is how I felt about him. The product of Tony’s actions. Meadow was more like Carmella. Accepting of mafia life, willing to be deluded about it.
Great analysis but you didn't mention Tony's other girlfriends (besides Gloria). Irina attempted suicide & Tony tried to get her to see a Therapist to which Irina vehemently declined. Valentina threatened suicide when Tony said he was leaving her at a low point. And finally Julianna was a drug addict due to her depression which led to her relationship with Christopher.
Adriana’s mother told Carmela that she was depressed after Adriana was murdered/missing.
Right! and Carmela was not sympathetic and refused to believe that Adriana might actually be dead!
A lot of the characters on the show were morons.
When carmela told Tony what Adrianna's mother said, what did Tony tell her.....she's a drunk, depressed my ass!
I think Ade’s mom tried to kill herself too.
It's incredibly immersive, in that as gripping and addictive as the show is you always come away feeling slightly depressed. But there's conciliation in that.
Shout *
The mental health issues in the Sopranos series were well done. In that life, it is basically a whose who of mental health issues ranging from anti-social behavior and depression, to straight up violent psychopathic behaviors. Using this issues in the series lent a greater sense of reality to the project. However, from everything I know personally about the Cosa Nostra, going to a shrink was an easy way to get yourself killed. In the Chicago version of the mob "The Outfit" that shit would be a death sentence.
Jesus Christ I never realized how much depression and suicide is in this show
Its no real surprise that depression would be a big part of the world of the mafia life considering that they live in a world where there is no true friendship loyalty or safety and everyone around you could kill you at any time for any reason.
Al Capone was famous for being extremely moody emotionally unpredictable and prone to bouts of intense mania followed by fits of extreme sadness.
The point is the real world is depressing and everyone is depressed no matter what line of work your in its not a criticism of the mafia it’s a criticism of life the depression came from surprisingly ordinary sources the show went out of their way to glamorize the lifestyle and shows them living the American dream but it seemingly still isn’t enough
The mafia and crime actually masks the depression as illustrated by Tony’s depression being broken by killing his would be assassins and aj pulling out of his depression by dissolving his friends toe in sulfuric acid
We now know that Capone was suffering from advanced Syphilis in later life. By the end of his life his brain was gone.
@@genekelly8467
Before he got sick one of his favorite hobbies was to write sappy love songs about women he loved.
He was a really complicated guy in a lot of ways.
So Al Capone was bipolar
I was born in Chicago and grew up around crime in and around my family. I ended up watching sopranos again as an adult when I was in my 20s and it helped me get an insight into my own feelings and trauma. Great show
They get family problems in the crime world so accurate it wierd
The show depicts mental illness so well.

Tony's face when Chris calls depressed people mental midgits xD
Season 6 was literally the darkest season. All episodes are all gray and dark. Go to season 1 and all episodes seem to be bright and happy.
Furio's depressed after realizing New Jersey is not an upgrade from Italy and that he can never be with Carmela. Carmela's depression with Tony's infidelities, her own issue of enabling Tony's lifestyle while completely benefitting from it, and that there is no easy way to get out of her relationship with Tony - to be independent, to be with Furio, or any other man for that matter. Plus her kids treat her like shit. Adriana's storyline is important, too, her being in love with Christopher, who is abusive to her, while also being stuck as an informant. Big Pussy being an informant and ratting out his close friends, knowing there is no good outcome to his situation. Everyone has some sort of mental and emotional struggle in this show, it's fascinating. But it's very true and realistic.
Yeah he eventually realized how shitty New Jersey is and the way it is out there especially how Tony has his people living
In light of recent humiliations...it’s an honor to be joined by Soprono theories
This channel is one of the BEST and most beautiful when it comes to 'The Sopranos' and everything that connects to the show and it gives excellent analytical analysis of the show and gives in-depth detail and specifics of the many interesting aspects of the show. I can relate to this show, I have really Severe depression, lately I've been feeling okay, but I am Familiar with them sad, dark, suicidal thoughts...

It gets hard man. So much negativity everywhere but there is something that will help you. Just need to find it man. Pray you get better
The title of this video should be "New Jersey: A World Surrounded by Depression, Suicide and Mental Illness"
It’s amazing how this show, as well as this analysis, puts my own mental illness and depression in perspective
Did Chris feel guilt over his first murder or just that he didn’t get the credit he felt he was due for doing it, which if I recall he felt that he earned being made
Maybe a mix of the two. Like he felt as if he took a life for nothing if he wasn’t made
Phenomenal channel man. I've watched the show at least 15-20 times, always finding more. Can't wait to keep watching your approach.
This show is too relatable sometimes it's scary.
I’m a psychologist and all I have to say is - outstanding work! Keep these videos coming. God bless.
He's great isn't he!
Whenever I recommend The Sopranos to those lucky people who haven't watched it yet, I usually hear they haven't watched it because it seems like just another mafia story. To which I reply "It's a story about the human condition, life, and family that is framed as a mafia story. But there's still some awesome mafia stuff going on, too."
this is a brilliant analysis of the show. It's not just about Tony's depression but many of the characters depression, suicide, and helplessness
Ya know what man your channel is so underrated can’t wait to see it grow! Loving the content
your content is binge worthy good work bro
Ive been watching hours of Soprano clips a day over the last couple of months. This really was a great show
When Tony said he was depressed and Carm told him don't start and she had enough on her plate was hilarious. She started listing all his crazy family members.
I gotta admit, wasn't a huge fan of AJ, but his depiction of depression was solid acting.
He was coddled as a boy, emasculated by his mother as a young man & hated what he was becoming....depression my ass!!

Ahh, The Sopranos is a tale of humanity itself.
Loving these and so grateful for your time and efforts, thanks again sir..
Very well constructed, my friend. Spot on.
Tony strangled a man to death in the first season with a piece of wire and never gave it a second thought, one of his men who wanted to retire out hanged himself and Tony didn’t care….but he was deeply affected by his mistresses suicide by hanging.
All the videos you make on the family are excellent!!! I could listen to you talk about just the moods these guys are in when eating 🤣😂😂🤣
Great channel and videos! Never really gave these kind of insights a thought cuz you have to watch Sopranos twice to catch details you miss the first time around and ya don’t wanna miss when anyone gets violently whacked!
What makes the sopranos the greatest show of all time is not the gangster stuff, the family drama, the humour etc. They all add to it sure but at its core it’s a portrayal of a broken and self loathing man whose mental health is in rapid decline as the years go by, as someone who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder it’s scary how spot on this show got it, nothing else has even come close.
Hats off to you sir.... amazing content.. keep it up.

I Think Eugene's "Members Only" Jacket, Makes an Appearance in TheSopranos Final Scene.
(Cause SomeBody in His Family, *KNEW* What Had Happened When Eugene Asked Tony to Leave.
So When TheRight Time Came Around...🎶Don't Stop.🎶)
Christopher wasn’t always a ray of sunshine & his coping with depression through self-chemistry was amplified by his semi-occult thoughts on “the bird” during his inauguration aside Gene, and he was abour as superstitious as Paulie, who said that he saw a therapist for a while.
Nice work. Earned a new subscription
Damn never realized how many characters killed themselves or attempted suicide till this video. With all the comedic moments, sometimes you forget how dark the show really is
I never realized how real of emotions these characters had at one episode at a time, but you break the story down really good!
Awesome work, as always!
Great video thanks! Can you do a video on the supernatural aspects of sopranos?
You could have possibly included Paulies depression dealing w the truth about his birth mother. Great content tho !

Sopranos is the deepest show I’ve ever watched.. my favorite so far. I’ve watched it about 5 times but as I suffer from depression it gets too much into me, so I stopped watching it. It’s a fucking masterpiece but I think its not good for people with this illness
You right about that. That show is a fucking curse
It's my favorite show of all time. One of the early shows to talk about depression, of which I have too
I think I've watched The Sopranos (all the seasons) 3 times leading to it instantly becoming my favourite
This was like 2 years ago
And damn you have reinvigorated my love for this show
One of the things that Tony did was the documentary he made about PTSD in the military and he is a real life hero as brocade of that documentary the VA got better and we got better treatment
Tony's psychological issues is what made this show work. If he had it straight upstairs this would be far more boring.
Great video I'm a fan.
The role of Tony Soprano was responsible for Gandolfini's death, imo.
@Ray Davison I Agree, James even lost weight between season 1-2 and David Chase told him to gain weight as it reflected better towards the character of Tony, really do have to wonder how much “Tony” contributed towards James’ death. Truly a tragic end 😢
@@brandbw even Gandolfini felt soprano had to be a certain weight which would of been obese
It was the lifestyle choices he made coupled with a genetic predisposition to heart disease.

I was surprised to find out David Chase was surprised people thought he got darker by the end. Watched the last talking Sopranos with David Chase today. I can't get enough of the Sopranos. Often looping the seasons through the night and day. All the seasons are great and I can't seem to find a favorite season.

well, I think the key word about the show is disappointment. It is no surprise that they get depressed when they get disappointed in their marriages, expectations about life and themselves. I very vividly remember Tony's shock when he realizes that Meadow's not a child anymore and can cunningly handle social situations.

Actors have spoken about being so immersed in their character that it starts to trickle down into their personal life so it's interesting/sad to read that the actor for AJ Soprano went on to struggle with substance abuse after The Sopranos ended. He seems to have overcome it in recent times though which is great to see!
Man, I didn't know that. Mob movies and shows really do seem to help bring out bad things in people.
The kid who played bevilaqua got sentenced to 10 years in prison.

When your in a business where family members kill other family members, and friends set businesses on fire or extort there businesses, you realize why everyone in the mob is depressed
Its genetic, the lifestyle isn't what's making them depressed.
