Tony's first childhood panic attack comes after witnessing his dad chopping off a "degenerate gambler's" finger. If Christopher isn't wearing that stupid Cleaver ballcap during the accident, maybe Tony spares his life? Definitely a triggering image for Tone.

    I think there was one other pivotal scene: When Christopher was hosting the cookout and he reminded Tony that his father, Dickie, "Tony's hero, was nothing more than a junkie." Tony literally was taken aback by the comment and then immediately accepting that Christopher would fare no better and thus he would always be a liability to the crew. From that point-on Tony wasn't going to let an opportunity pass him by to kill him. The car accident was the perfect alibi.

    • @Bout_Dat_Action
      @Bout_Dat_Action 8 місяців тому +2

      I agree about the scene, but I think the conclusion Tony took from that comment was that Chris only remembered his father Dickie, who was Tony’s version of Tony to Chris (mentor/father figure type) was that he was a no good junkie and didn’t give him any credit for the good he did. Which also played into his insecurities about Cleaver and how he already knew Chris viewed him as just a violent bully and didn’t appreciate or remember any of the good times/life advice he provided over the years which really ate at Tony because that was a close relationship he thought he had and came to realization it was all for not and he wasn’t viewed how he thought he was by a person he loved and once looked up to him.

    Tony loved Christopher. He had a vision of their future together and invested in his nephew significantly in addition to giving him a pass on things that would have been dealt with harshly had it been anyone else. Any other boss would have had Chris killed for any number of reasons aside from the fact that his drug addiction made him a loose cannon, easier to flip. The others saw this and resented Chris for it. Despite the sacrifices Tony made for Chris (in spite of Christopher's flaws, blatant disrespect of Tony, incompetence, and weaknesses), the nephew who was once a source of pride for Tony became a constant source of disappointment/stress to Tony. To add insult to injury, Chris felt ENTITLED to the perks/life that only a boss is afforded and Tony was acutely aware of that fact. You're going to point out the giant "sacrifice" Christopher made for his uncle, right? Giving Adriana up had more to do with Christopher's inherent selfishness than anything else;when Chris saw that struggling, unhappy family at the gas station, he saw his and Adriana's future. The man's discontent with the situation he had created for himself made Chris realize he didn't want a mediocre life rife full of regret for his decision to build a life on the run with Adriana. Tony loved Christopher as much as he COULD love him until it became obvious just how much Christopher hated Tony. Resentment is a two way street sometimes. When you sacrifice, invest, teach and train, promote, makes excuses for and give opportunities to someone who ultimately resents you for your position/what you've worked hard to have in life, that in itself breeds resentment. There is always a straw that breaks the camel's back and in this case, it was the Cleaver movie.Tony was initially proud of Christopher's accomplishment because Tony's love for his nephew blinded him to what was obvious to everyone else except Tony: that his nephew hated him. It had to be POINTED out to Tony, in fact. That movie was the ultimate act of disrespect toward Tony and the final straw. When Tony admitted to Melfi that he was relieved that Chris was gone, it was because his nephew was an incredible drag on Tony's emotions for many years, and to be able to finally let that negativity go was freedom to some degree to Tony. Love is a funny thing-you can love your nephew his whole life with all you have, give him opportunities he would have NEVER had were it not for you, make sacrifices to invest in his future and well being, make excuses for his disrespect, put yourself, your financial well being and reputation, and your future at risk for him ...but when he delivers that final slap in the face, it's not love you feel anymore-It's loss, anger, disgust, disappointment, grief and then... nothing. This show triggers me in a couple of ways. This evolution of the relationship between Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti was one of them. Tony loved Christopher as much as he could have until it wasn't love he was feeling anymore.

    IMO Tony never cared about Christopher. He pretended to care and to help him just as long as Christopher was helping his mafia ambitions and Chrissy was "kissing the ring". Once Tony realized Chris was an actual threat to him and his mafia empire, he got rid of him as ruthlessly as anyone else he has killed. He did not care Chrissy was dead and once it actually registered he was relieved that he had to no longer pretend to support someone who constantly screwed up and disappointed him in the end. Combine that with him no longer being able to turn on Tony and Tony almost became ecstatic to be out of that pressure when he took his trip to Las Vegas.
    Its just a reminder Tony was the bad guy all along despite us pulling for him (you can't help but do that, cmon!). I do not think Tony was a total sociopath. Very close, but the fact that he cared for his children and he showed it and the weaknesses that brings proves there was some bit of him capable of feeling. That said he was severely damaged and Dr Melfie gave up on him (which honestly was understandable) just as I think he reached a point where he could be saved. Instead he killed Christopher and his transition as an unsalvageable character was completed. He sealed Chrissy's fate, but in turn sealed his own.

      I think he cared about Chrissy, it's just that there's limits, and I don't think anyone can deny Chrissy overstayed his welcome a little bit. I also disagree that Tony wasn't a sociopath, because he was completely, what he isn't is a psychopath. The thing to note with sociopaths is they can feel, it's just all their emotions and the way they express them is all fucked up, almost like a perversion of humanity.

But each of those proteges died before their “mafia fathers”. John Sacrimoni loved Joey Peeps and was infuriated. I see the relationship between Christopher and Tony as one of a trauma bond between a narcissist and their main supply provider. Tony's personality once again acts like the black hole that sits at the centre of every narcissist and the closer Christopher gets to Tony the more immanent his destruction becomes, sadly it is only with the event horizon so far behind him that he realises he is being crushed by the singularity and smothered in the darkness and by then it is far too late ...the scene at the gas station after Adrianna confesses to him, would be the event horizon and after that Christopher goes through the five stages and acceptance of his fate for him is when he gets back on the gear, because he stops fighting the pull and goes with the current, may as well be high all the time if your life is misery and your fate is sealed.
    It is also when Tony realises Christopher is bang on the brown that he accepts what he has been denying to himself, that, ultimately, Christopher hates him and that Christopher is, and always was, a liability that he should have dealt with in season one episode one, with all the bullshit surrounding his car and him coming in late. Tony also accepts, far too late, that family and business should never mix, because up until this point the family members he has been in business and even those within the business he loves as a family with have had to die or have tried to kill him or have betrayed him in some way unacceptable to his narcissistic personality. When Tony kills Christopher he has accepted the truth, from his own perspective at least.

    I'm not sure who it was that made the suggestion/decision to have the "Stage 5" episode end with "Evidently Chickentown" by John Cooper Clarke, but they seriously deserve the highest possible recognition for that decision. Maybe I'm biased, as some who comes from Manchester, England, like J C Clarke. But, as if The Sopranos weren't already enough of a masterpiece, using "Evidently Chickentown" makes the tension and bleakness so much more relatable to me. That dreary Manchester/Salford accent, the overuse of the word "bloody" (which is common for us, but brilliantly foreshadows Christopher's "end", as mentioned in the video), and the tinny, droning percussion always reminds me of being stood in the pissing rain on a dim, gray Manchester afternoon. Absolute masterpiece.

    When you have a protagonist and Deuteragonist like Tony and Christopher in the world of the Mafia and The Sopranos where you should never count on a happy ending I think there's 2 natural endings: The 1 we got in the car or pulling through all struggles and when the end is drawing near it's the if we go down we go down together deal. I completely understand how Tony and Christopher's story ended but despite everything, everytime Tony pauses briefly there's a huge part of me that wants to beg Tony to pull Chrissy out. I know the together to the end narrative is a bit corny for the Sopranos but that's how special these 2 characters are and how special their bond was for so long. I so wish there was alternate footage of Chrissy living at least until they go to the mattresses.
    Would absolutely love to see you do a video on what if the Bond of Tony and Christopher survived through everything as it did for most of the series and Tony had his nethew and other son with him against New York. If you ever had any interest in that. I enjoy thinking about how that would have played out. Meadow for instance, will always be the thing Tony loves more than anything. If Tony had spared Chrissy even after the strains put on their bond and the monster Tony became if it happened that way would Christopher represent the one spark of goodness left in Tony's life as a Boss? The goodness we see much more of in the early seasons even when it's Omerta related.
